In the UK, what is the etiquette around living above another flat/apartment?

Nearby_Impact6708@reddit

Completely fine I had a neighbour like this who took offence to normal noises and she went absolutely batshit trying to piss us off. Locked herself away, refused to talk to people and would invite her fat mess of a friend over to intimidate but all she did was get her kicked out even quicker because she was an absolutely ridiculous human being with all the threat of an angry space hopper. We weren't trying annoy her either, we were very welcoming and it's a quiet household. We were just doing normal stuff but I play a few instruments and have quite a lot of sound equipment in my flat and lived above her. Thing is I use headphones, I can't stand loud noises. She didn't realise this when taking offence to things like me walking around my flat. She thought me walking around my flat was to piss her off. In the end I moved out for a week and showed her what a real sound system can do when remotely activated at 5am in the morning with the speakers facing the floor and directly over her bed.  She moved out in 2 weeks.

What are your views on the job market right now?

It's gonna vary from location to location and depend on what jobs you're after But in my experience I had no trouble getting work after 8 years out; applied for 2 jobs, got 2 interviews and got offered the second job. I didn't have much trouble getting my second job after that either, despite having another gap of a few months before applying again.  I feel like if I can get employment then anyone probably can but if you need to be picky then it's gonna be a lot harder. For example I don't have a mortgage to worry about or kids, however I do have other restrictions I suppose. E.g I don't drive and hate using public transport 😃

Yeah we definitely learned about a couple russian composers and studied their music in my school but it was a while ago. Rachmaninoff is the obvious one, Tchaikovsky is very famous here too though I can't remember if we studied his music, liked it from being a child

I had 2 for years until I realised you could have 3. Then I went up to 4.  Honestly these days, if anyone tells me they only eat 2 Weetabix I just can't respect them. I just think what a pathetic child you must be. There is no excuse or reason for an adult to eat 2 Weetabix. What are you gonna do with 300 calories? Like seriously? By the time 10 o clock comes round you're gonna be on the floor, making an arse of yourself in front of everyone because you've refused to fuel your body effectively. It's disgusting, it's fucked up, and it should be banned.

Is it rude to say "hello mate" to a woman?

Posted by imokaytho@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 199 comments

Nearby_Impact6708@reddit

No - mate means friend. It's a term of affection, it's not a rude thing to say The thing is though, even when something isn't offensive, people sometimes still take offence to things or misinterpret how things are meant.  The classic is when people use the term guys to mean a group of people but someone will go excuse me I'm not a man 🙄 Nobody was calling you a man Brenda, it wasn't even going through anyone's head except yours and even if it was I am a man Brenda. I am not going to be using it as an insult or a put down.

Why does it feel like bread, (even outside bakeries), is so much nicer in Europe than in the UK? What do they do differently?

Posted by Rosslefrancais@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 488 comments

Nearby_Impact6708@reddit

To be fair they just make bread A lot of the "bread" in the UK has been altered to the point it doesn't really resemble bread. If it's not rock hard after like a day or two then I'm sorry to say it's not really bread anymore it's some sad futuristic copy of bread made to resemble the real thing but tastes, feels and behaves nothing like it  I am a bread snob and my views are at least partially based on pomp and ego, I understand that and will not be accepting arguments that fail to account for this.  I think my tastes on bread are just better than yours ok, giving me your opinion won't make me change it, it will just fill me with even more disdain for your sad little soggy sandwiches that were made 5 days ago and are still somehow fresh. It's an abomination.

Fellow recipients of PIP, how do you cope with the constant battle to prove you are disabled?

Posted by iDidNotStepOnTheFrog@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 359 comments

Nearby_Impact6708@reddit

I find once you get lots of evidence from GP's they're ok or if you take it to tribunal When it goes to a tribunal, ime, they do everything they can do to award it to you. When I applied for PIP we appealed it all but weren't gonna appeal the mobility part and explained that to them, but they insisted we explain why were applying for mobility as well. In the end it meant I actually got a higher rate.  It's something like 60% or something ridiculous gets turned over at tribunal. I used to have a family member working for them and he said part of the issue is that the people reading them aren't really qualified. You might get a claim for mental health being checked by a physio. So until it actually gets checked by people who understand the conditions described in the claim, they're unlikely to allow it.

Why is Cannabis still criminalized in the UK?

Posted by cookoutenthusiast@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 855 comments

Nearby_Impact6708@reddit

It pretty much is decriminalised to be fair You really have to try hard or be incredibly unlucky to get in trouble for possession of cannabis. As a policy legalising or decriminalisation of weed is just so low down and unimportant to so many people, it isn't really worth campaigning on and the people who want to use weed can already get it with very little issue. You can even get it prescribed in the UK now.  It just seems like it's not really worth it as people who want to use cannabis already can and do anyway and I suspect it will probably get decriminalised anyway just because of how little people care about it anymore. It just doesn't seem like a priority for the country to decriminalise weed ATM, there's more important stuff basically

Is my boss permitted to tell me he “needs me to do work” even though I called in sick?

Nearby_Impact6708@reddit

I don't know for sure but at one job I had when I was sick I offered to do some stuff from home and they straight up told me not to. Their advice was if you're sick stay off and come back in, if I'm off they can't send me work (I'm assuming there were legal reasons too but the culture was very much look after yourself if sick cos the job was stressful) and they also pointed out don't come in if you actually are sick because they can't and won't make allowances. My impression was that it's pretty black and white - off sick = 0 work until you're back in.

Is there a free in patient rehab for young women anywhere in the UK?

Posted by libesumbrush@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 57 comments

Nearby_Impact6708@reddit

If she's using heroin then try and keep an eye out for places that offer buvidal - it's far better than methadone in getting people sober however it's well it's an event. They won't be able to use even if they want to and that can be unpleasant if they aren't ready for it, but most people tend to do really well on buvidal. I think it's only in Wales at the moment and maybe a few places in England but I'd really recommend buvidal if you can support her with that.  I'm in recovery myself and so are a lot of my friends. The good news is that most people don't actually find rehab that helpful and nor is it necessary for a lot of people. I think people can get hung up on rehab and think they go there and it'll solve their problems but aftercare is a real big issue. I'd try and encourage her to engage with local peer led support services and places like NA (narcotics anonymous) or CA (cocaine anonymous, but they accept all addictions). If she goes to those places she will be able to meet people who have been in her situation and got themselves sorted. She'll also be able to learn things they did and hopefully make her realise that it's not the end of the world if she doesn't get into rehab. There's a strong argument to be made that people who recover in the community do better because they're not only stopping using, they're also learning to manage their life as they do and getting support.  A lot of people come out of rehab and find it completely overwhelming and relapse. Don't get me wrong rehab can be amazing but if the person isn't 1000% committed then there's 0 guarantee it will work / help and people can feel really disheartened if they relapse after, despite it actually being quite common

Nah I've met loads of people who have never been abroad. The people who have been usually come from families where they could afford to do it growing up and the ones who don't tended not to have that experience growing up and don't carry it on. Obviously not a hard and fast rule but seems a bit like animals...if you grew up doing it seems more likely they continue doing it

It's a good question. Like others, the word I would say is chav but I get where you're coming from. That's a loaded term and isn't a label that someone chooses, like goth or punk, it's a label that is put onto someone.  I never heard anyone going around identifying themselves as a chav but I wonder what the people who would have been labeled chav around the 90's early and 2000's called themselves?

Yeah, I used to cycle and do not drive and even then I can happily say that 99.9999999% of drivers are fantastic.  I can remember one time someone was a jerk when I used to cycle. I did follow the rules though which probably had a big impact, I always let cars pass asap cos I don't like having them behind me either and obviously I'm not an idiot so I wouldn't do things like ignore red lights or cycle on pavements either.

Do you think people in this country generally get on well with each other?

Posted by Nature2Love@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 83 comments

Nearby_Impact6708@reddit

Yeah I do. Not online necessarily but in my day to day interactions people mostly seem the same as ever. In fact, it's very rare for me to see people being rude, it stands out because it's not the norm. I interact with a lot of people in my day to day life, both strangers and people I see regularly. Conflict is not the norm, in fact it's incredibly uncommon. Of course I'm just one person and my experience isn't going to be representative. I'm sure there are people that are surrounded by conflict in their day to day lives in the UK at the moment in fact I know there are.

Yeah it's not exactly uncommon but it's also not exactly uncommon to come across young people that are well behaved and able to interact with others in a healthy and mature manner. Idk they're just kids. Last time one made a comment I just ignored what he said and told him he had a shit stain on his trousers as I carried on walking without stopping.  He actually looked to check as well 🤣 completely derailed him but completely harmless. Also made him look a tit in front of his mates.

I was homeless and no way would you catch me doing that.  You'd never get housed again. For me it was way more worthwhile to stay in a few shitty hostels for a bit and then get a place than stay in a tent. And I did give it serious thought too - I still have the tent that I bought because I was gonna do that then quickly realised how stupid it would be if I wanted to live indoors again. I certainly wouldn't leave the area as well as that would make it even harder for me to get housed!

I think they'd effectively have to ban YouTube because I don't think they'd be able to stop them as they don't operate from the UK. Fellow brits in their 20s, how on earth do we make friends?

Nearby_Impact6708@reddit

Just kept turning up to things I was interested in and over the course of several months I got to know people and became friends. Making friends is a process and it won't work if you go to an odd class here and there or expect it to work after meeting them a couple times. You get to make friends by spending time with each other consistently, turning up consistently over the course of months and years. Why can't you make friends with people who are 20+ years older? My closest friend is 18 years older than me. Stop telling yourself these things, the world doesn't work like that and it just limits you. If you can't go to the meetups between 10-1 then you look for other things that are on when you can go to them. You don't focus on the ones that you can't go to and say argh I can't go to it, you go oh that's no good for me I'm gonna have to look for something else
