How do you deal with interpersonal conflict in U.K. culture?

Hiya, I'm British but grew up elsewhere. I have since moved to the U.K. and I plan to settle here long term. I never completely related to the 'bravado' of my home country and always felt a bit more 'English' in nature (plus my English family members told me so). Now that I'm here, though, I'm realising just how much I differ culturally. One way I'm trying to grow is in how I handle conflict, either in my relationships or with my colleagues. I've historically subscribed to the belief that handling things clearly and directly (though kindly and with good intentions) is best practice, but I've realised that doesn't really bode well over here, and when I choose to do so I come across as a bit rude and tactless. I've been trying to learn, and in the meantime, become quite interested in 'the British way' so I'm curious to see how you've all gone about your interpersonal conflicts. So, I wish to know: If you're having a conflict with a friend, family member, partner, or colleague, what steps do you usually take to mitigate it? How do you tend to communicate? Anecdotal examples are welcomed.
