Ordnance bench mark or OBM. If you look at an ordnance survey map of certain scales that symbol will be there at that location along with a number. The number is the height in meters that that mark is above ordnance datum. Ordnance datum is essentially a mean sea level.
The marks are used for surveyors and engineers to transfer the level to their own construction sites to make sure the strucutres are constructed to the right heights.

He's become something of a replacement for Tom Scott, I just hope he doesn't put himself under the pressure Tom did!
Holy shit I watched the video, googled the map, looked up my house, I have one on my windowsill!!!

Network is no longer maintained, but most are relatively accurate still. I’ve known a few to be used by surveyors even today as benchmarks, typically for long term monitoring of dams etc
If I remember the very vague surveying training I got years ago, the accuracy tends to be reliant on local conditions - for instance, they are usually less reliable in areas with a history of mining.
They don't, but a new one was recently established for the 70th anniversary of an Army Reserve unit. All very ceremonial rather than any practical usage

That’s not quite correct.
I was a setting out engineer and these are still used to check back for site datum’s.
Yes things are now done by GPS, but even that isn’t accurate all the time especially when there is lots of tree cover and clouds.
These are great
There are still physical benchmarks called fundamental benchmarks which have very stable deep foundations which are used to calibrate the GOS. There are far fewer of them though, only a handful.

One on an old church in Wharram Percy
It’s a Bench Mark. The exact height above sea level of the horizontal line can be found on Ordnance Survey maps. In the UK, sea level is usually taken at Newlyn.
It looks like a satanic ritual marker, there's a place very near to the sign where dark magic is or used to be practiced.
You find loads in smaller towns in the north of England and Scotland, Lancashire is widely known as the epicenter of the occultists movement
Aka ‘crow’s feet’ mark due to the pattern the key is for the surveyor to sight their instrument (traditionally a theodolite aka ‘dumpy level’) so the cross-hair lines in with the arrow vertically where it is entirely recessed. The height difference is resolved by the staffs that are often seen with markings on in black and red. This person is traditionally the ‘chain lad’ and is also referred to as being on ‘the daft end’ despite both jobs requiring some experience and minor errors resulting in costly mistakes.
A trig point is on top of a trig pillar, it is where the theodolite would have been placed when taking measurements. There usually is a benchmark cast into the side of the pillar as well.
Yes it’s an ordnance mark.
Originally in uk the army used surveyors to create accurate maps for distances and bombardment.
That’s why our maps used to be called Ordnance Survey.
That mark is the ordnance mark chiseled into a stone denoting a survey base marker for the local survey.
Often the point would be taken from the top of the T shape where the arrow points to.
Also the survey point might be the top or other chiseled mark on the object.
These are typical in uk as they were added during heyday of surveying.
If you had a local map and looked at it you will often see the ordnance points marked on the maps.
These points denote usually a height above sea level that can be accurately used to continue surveying and are called ordnance datum points.
It was for the OS, I believe it is sea level as I had one on my house growing up and people would come and round every few years I’m guessing to do the OS.
I strangely enough learnt about this the other day
Something to do with height and elevation , possibly with train tracks, all over Britain , think each Mark has a record for its height
curious if whoever designed it was aware of how similar it looks to ‘不 ‘ which is the Chinese word for ‘no’.
‘suppose there are a lot of everyday symbols / iconography that double as something else unintentionally.
I thought that originally meant “Property of HM Gov.” Whence why it’s portrayed in media as an archetypical prison uniform. I see it all over London … but others have said it is it’s an OS marker, I mean, if I’m measuring a piece of wood I’d certainly use that mark.. … gawd blimey, stick it up yer jumper, amen.
The pictured symbol *incorporates* the broad arrow that meant govt property, but also includes a horizontal line. My understanding is that it’s the horizontal line that is technically the ‘benchmark’, while the broad arrow tells you that it’s a government one, not some other bugger’s
