Have dropped a whole tin of green gloss on the carpet. What are your worst DIY fails?

Posted by Chance-Albatross-211@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 297 comments

Mission-Sound9493@reddit

My mother fell of a ladder whilst decorating in the living room and sent a tin of terracotta colour paint all over: 1) the TV 2) the sofa 3) the carpet 4) herself We spent the next six weeks watching the tiny TV from the upstairs bedroom on garden chairs in the living room whilst waiting for insurance to pay for everything to be replaced. Honestly, a core memory.

Is it rude to ask someone to switch seat on a train?

If I saw a couple get on who couldn't find seats together, they wouldn't have to ask as I'd be offering to move. Really feels like the basic manners that seemed universal 20 years ago have absolutely gone down the pan.

We flew Jet2 recently and some of the fragrance/cosmetics onboard were certainly cheaper than at home (though usually around the same price as you would get them when discounted at Christmas etc).

It's highly likely that HR has passed on your info to your new line manager who was meant to follow up with a start time etc and they have just forgotten/have lost the email in their inbox. Seen it happen so many times (regardless of LM competency). Just turn up at 9:00 and be prepared to be v bored for a few hours/days.

I have just been downgraded from Kind Regards to Regards and I am not sure if I should call HR or a lawyer?

What is your workplace's policy on compassionate leave?

Posted by Conversation__16@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 50 comments

Mission-Sound9493@reddit

I would usually say, don't be afraid to go to the doctor and get signed off if the grief is really bad and going to work is harming and not helping, but with your work not paying sick pay, the usual 7 day self cert that some GPs require before signing someone off is obviously not an option for you. Sorry to hear your workplace is a bit crap on this - I can't say I would be happy to stay somewhere which lacked compassionate company policies on bereavement (of anyone I was close to - kot just immediate family!).

What’s the most fun wedding you’ve ever been to?

Posted by nepourjoueraubingo@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 379 comments

Mission-Sound9493@reddit

Mate had a wedding in a well known seaside town. Ceremony in a beautiful church then a short walk down to the pier where they'd hired out the arcade for two hours for everyone (and where a dodgems death match soon commenced). Then the evening meal/dance in the function room at the end of the pier (complete with access to the end of the pier to dangle your legs over the sides despite copious amount of red wine). A banging wedding and amazingly well scheduled so that at no point were people just waiting around trying to figure out what was happening.

Does everyone in the UK have a big mirror in the living room?

Yep, big mirrors above the fireplaces in the living and dining rooms, and one in the hallway. Can't imagine the rooms without them tbh. They help reflect light and are always useful for touching up makeup, fixing hair etc before going out.

Have you ever purchased something, as an adult, that your parent has judged you negatively for? If so, what was/is it?

Posted by PaddedValls@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1170 comments

I bought a counter mini dishwasher because my ADHD makes washing pots a literal nightmare and causes real harm to my mental health. Dad told me I was lazy. Like OP, this man hardly does anything at home, granted he is disabled so physical tasks are hard but he doesn't even organise the bills or anything like that. And yet I'm the one who is lazy? Madness.

Never been able to pass the manual driving test due to essential tremor. Is it worth learning and attempting at least on automatics?

Posted by Lovecraftian666@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 142 comments

Mission-Sound9493@reddit

If the Doctor and the relevant driving authority agree that you can drive then yes, just learn and pass on automatic. This may give you the confidence to pass in a manual or it may just mean you drive automatic for the rest of your life (when needed) - which is also perfectly fine. I agree with some other commenters that you should think about whether your tremor means you may not be safe on the road as what you do will affect every other road user, however, that's a personal (and relevant authority) decision rather than one we can make. Also, there is nothing wrong with not being able to drive. This shame is purely your issue and it's your choice whether to allow it precedence or not. Maybe have a think about why or who has made you feel this way and sit with it for a bit or talk to someone who can give you an unbiased view.

Twist on this annoying convention. My Mom always leaves one piece of whatever she is cooking in the pan. Whether it be a piece of veg, a chicken wing, a Yorkshire pudding etc. There will always be one piece of it left. This isn't so she can go back for a little snack or anything - if no one else is there it'll go in the bin. It grinds my gears to the max.

Can your workplace force you to talk a work laptop home and be responsible for it outside working hours - if you don’t WFH?

Posted by Griselda_69@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 90 comments

Mission-Sound9493@reddit

This is a really odd thread. Quite a few people adamant that OP should take it home just in case when they clearly don't want to. We are allowed to have separation between our work and personal lives and spaces. I prefer hybrid working but it's perfectly fine if someone else doesn't - that's what flexible working means. And if something did happen that meant OP couldn't get into the office (snow, office flood, zombie apocalypse) then just like the old days the office could do without them or they can take leave. Just refuse the edict OP and remind them that your home situation is not more secure than the office. Job done.

Should I move from Australia to the UK?

Posted by SpecificEvening7032@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 83 comments

Mission-Sound9493@reddit

If you do have to be re-diagnosed then I suggest you allot some of your budget to private diagnostics and possible also private treatment. The NHS ADHD diagnostic backlog is running up to 7 years in some areas (though considerably quicker if you use the right to choose option - but still 1-2 years). With your savings you are likely to find private treatment manageable financially. I would be interested if you had considered one of the other options presented in this thread though - doing some travelling? Whether around somewhere familiar - like the UK - or South East Asia maybe? It might be a good break and allow you to build confidence/life skills before you make a decision on where to settle.

You have to sit through maths lessons so incorporating it into that to make the subject more applicable to the real world would be useful. Ultimately only the people who want to listen will but at least getting people familiar with concepts such as compounding is a bonus.

Does the UK have issues with excessive amounts of pollen? Do citizens have issues with allergies because of increase in pollen during spring?

Posted by happyLilAcidents444@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 24 comments

Mission-Sound9493@reddit

In general people will just say they have hayfever and whatever pollen/plant adjacent thing they are allergic to goes under that umbrella. For example, I know quite a few people in London who are badly affected by Plane trees and they all just say it's hayfever, the same way friends in rural areas who are no doubt actually allergic to hay say it.

Lost on career paths for an English Lit grad. Do you have any advice?

Posted by Obvious_Armadillo_16@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 43 comments

Mission-Sound9493@reddit

Marketing, PR, civil service, British Council, pretty much any grad scheme not targeted at science/maths/IT, administration, consultancy, higher education, TV production, Sales, publishing, charity sector etc. The skies the limit really. The type of degree matters much less than your work experience (e.g. having worked or volunteered somewhere, or even better that you've tried to find some experience in the sector you want to go into) and how much effort you put into your applications/interviews.

I genuinely think we need to start having public information campaigns on TV again. Employer pushing disciplinary during my approved holiday after unions closed – terrified of being dismissed. Can someone help?

Posted by Cheahboi01@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 114 comments

Mission-Sound9493@reddit

You're getting dismissed mate. Accessing your own UC claim is one of the things they warn you about on day one at DWP and is pretty much an automatic dismissal. Look for another job now. Depending on what the union presence at your workplace is like they probably would be happy to chat with you even if you aren't a member but tbh they'll say the same thing.

I (28m) only make £13k per year (£50 per day). How bad is my situation?

Posted by DescriptionFuture851@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 199 comments

Mission-Sound9493@reddit

I'd get on to UC if I were you mate and try and access some learning opportunities through that, such as an SIA training course etc. Or you could look for an apprenticeship which will allow you to actually qualify for a career e.g. plumbing, electrician etc. Obviously you'll be on apprentice wages but I can't see that being worse than your current situation. Really, you need to actually get your act together and do something though. Your post has a lot of 'I haven't done anything to improve myself' energy and nobody is going to improve your life for you. Good luck and all the best!

Don't go for WKD. Alcopops are literally made to be tasty and fun so that people (especially young people) over indulge. Give her a bit of wine and honestly she'll probably: a) not like it very much and so won't want anymore, and b) be happy enough that she got to try it.

Greece is a good option for all inclusive. The islands like Rhodes, Corfu etc are value for money and the central towns are easy to navigate. They will unfortunately all be rammed with tourists though unless you go somewhere very off the beaten path.
