Where did all the Dubai Chocolate go?
Posted by robinscotland@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 625 comments
A year ago, every chocolate manufacturer and confectioner was selling "Dubai Chocolate".
At the time, there was a conspiracy that the chocolate was actually a marketing ploy to try and redefine the colloquial meaning of the name - this sounded a bit far fetched.
However, it's now less than a year since this craze and I've not heard alot either definition of Dubai Chocolate in months.
Thoughts? Are you still seeing it advertised where you are? Not seen mention of it in fife for ages.
OnlyJoeKing21@reddit
In the bin where it belongs
pblive@reddit
The ‘let’s cover up all the issues of people searching for Dubai on the internet and coming up with all the crap we do as a first result’ chocolate?
HalfFaust@reddit
I still see it about some places. No desire to actually buy any, but guess that means it'll stay on the shelf longer.
Strange_Duck6231@reddit
My local takeaway still has a section on their menu devoted to it.
I found Dubai chocolate a huge disappointment - pistachio is often my go to flavour as I love pistachios, but it just tasted like sugary shredded wheat.
Aldi are currently selling chocolate coated pistachios and they too were a disappointment, the chocolate is far too sugary and thick so you can’t even taste the pistachios.
g0ldcd@reddit
Everybody tried it once, and the market dried up.
External-Piccolo-626@reddit
The chocolate version of fast fashion. Remember the Prime drink?
pogo0004@reddit
Fuckin hell prime was a disgusting product.
ChrisCoinLover@reddit
Yes, and loads of kids were drinking it. It should have been banned by the gouvenment same as the cigarettes under 18s.
Impressive_Sock1296@reddit
Liquid haribo
Spid1@reddit
Nah, some haribos are actually nice
Prime on the other hand is rank and you'd never catch a grown adult drinking it
EnvironmentalSir4214@reddit
Totally forgot about prime
They tried to make it a thing in the meal deal section for a while but I haven’t seen it for a year atleast. I remember all the flavours just sounded like vapes you can get from a dodgy shop ‘silver moon’ ‘blu razz’ etc
cold_tap_hot_brew@reddit
And Stanley bottles
Agreeable_Training27@reddit
Nah Stanley is a great brand not a fleeting trend. The ladies walking around with their massive cups may have been, but the best insulated drinks and food vessels out there in my opinion is Stanley.
Fermanagh_Red@reddit
I was never interested then was given a yeti cup through a group I volunteer with and it's the best thing I've ever had
I drink tea at home in it and it's still super hot hours later
Worth every penny they cost
Flamingpieinthesky@reddit
Somehow, I'd imagine you're a sipper rather than a drinker of tea if it stays hot hours later.
Fermanagh_Red@reddit
I'm a drinker in a regular mug
Sipper in my yeti because it never cools down
It's a big cup so I reckon I've got a few mugs worth in it
PurpleJuis@reddit
Any £10 does the same
majkkali@reddit
No it doesn’t clearly you have no clie
PurpleJuis@reddit
I have a Yeti and one from Morrisons. They do the exact same.
TimeAdmirable@reddit
You have a dreary existence if that's the best thing you ever had
Occamsfacecloth@reddit
It's the best thing you've ever had?
Fermanagh_Red@reddit
Should have been clearer
Purely in travel cup options
GarethGore@reddit
Okay fair, continue, I was going to say my guy, I envy your aspirations in life. If you've peaked at a insulated cup as the best thing ever then you will be forever satisfied, which is a rather nice thought in a way
TimElgin@reddit
I agree…and pistachio in chocolate is also delicious. Both not worth the price at their peaks though, I suppose.
Kent_Doggy_Geezer@reddit
But what was that dried pasta doing in there?
Unknown_Author70@reddit
I still haven't justified the price and I fucking love pistachio.
My wife knows this and bought me what she thought was a Dubai chocolate bar for my birthday, it in fact was milk chocolate with whole pistachios throughout. It was alright.. but she thinks it's the best chocolate I've had.
God I hope she doesn't buy more.

I don't think it is actually. The brand has been split up over the years it seems. The cups/flasks are made by Stanley PMI which is a different company to Stanley Black & Decker.
Mod74@reddit
Stanley tools and Stanley cups have never been the same company/brand.
Taken_Abroad_Book@reddit
Stanley like the tool company?
VixenRoss@reddit
Stanley cups hold more than a sports direct mug. I know because I made some tea (not really hot because of the plastic straw) and made myself a bucket of the stuff. My daughter had not used her Stanley for months. I got in trouble for that.
blenderider@reddit
Hydroflask is better imo. Don’t love Stanley’s form factor
Old-Career1538@reddit
Yeti for me. One of the few brands I feel brand loyalty to.
wemcm@reddit
My wife bought a Yeti each for us and the kids (when they were on sale), at the time I thought it was mad but I was so wrong. They’re brilliant
Rabbit-1989@reddit
Our twins have yeti bottles because all other bottles seemed to come back broken after a few weeks at school. The Yeti ones are a little banged up, but otherwise perfectly fine and functional, after more than a year.
poacher5@reddit
I don't know if they're still as good but I've had the same SIGG bottle since I was in primary school and it's still going strong into my 30s - it'll probably outlive me
MingePies@reddit
I have a few Yeti products and they are great. They are a little pricier but the quality is there and the customer service, at least in my opinion, has been great. I wouldn’t spend the big money on the coolers and stuff but I’m also not the target market.
NoisyGog@reddit
I bought a yeti insulated mug for work, and it’s absolutely fantastic.
I love little design features like the magnetic lid slider closing thing (obviously I’m unsure of its name!!) The fact you can just pop it off to wash. It means there’s no crevices that can’t be washed properly, or anywhere for any liquid to pool up and go weird.
ishamm@reddit
Which is weird, because they use the same technology but people think they invented the vacuum walled flask.
NoisyGog@reddit
In the UK, Thermos has practically become a generic term for vacuum flask, a Yeti product is considered “a type of Thermos” by most people.
WavryWimos@reddit
Both are stupid. Why would I want a mouthpiece that’s exposed and picks up all the dirt and germs?
blenderider@reddit
Because the drinking experience is better. Get a mouthpiece cleaner. If you're too much of a germaphobe, fair enough. I'm not.
WavryWimos@reddit
Honestly just easier to find a bottle that doesn’t have an exposed mouthpiece and has just as good a drinking experience. Brümate, Owala, Simple Modern etc.
Not really a germaphobe but when you think about all the stuff you’ve been touching, why would I want that in my mouth? Especially when bottles with covered mouthpieces exist.
blenderider@reddit
I'm not touching the mouthpiece directly. That piece is meant to lift it up. So I'm not sure if you had another model in mind, but I don't directly touch where I put my mouth.
WavryWimos@reddit
I don’t really believe that your hands don’t come into contact with the part that goes in your mouth. My partner has a hydroflask and the flip up spout can be a bit stiff sometimes and that little pull piece is not great, so it’s extremely easy to absentmindedly touch other parts to help flip it up. But I don’t know you so I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.
Even aside from touching it, why would I want the mouthpiece exposed all the time? It’s dumb design and serves no purpose.
blenderider@reddit
Mine works perfectly. I don’t know if she has used the flask for anything other than water? That might explain the stickiness.
In your opinion it’s a dumb design because you don’t want your fingers anywhere near the mouthpiece, that’s fine. But it works great. So the design isn’t great for you, but this bottle provides my favourite drinking experience, and given Hydroflask’s sustained popularity, a lot of other people agree.
Out of the brands you mentioned, which is your favourite or do you think is the best designed?
WavryWimos@reddit
Only water.
What about it makes it your favourite drinking experience?
Brümate Rise is my favourite. But they all have things that they do better than others.
blenderider@reddit
The mouthpiece lol. It's the first premium water bottle I've had. I've had my share of cheap plastic, metallic, open lids. I've never tried another premium watter bottle other than my ex-girlfriend's Stanley, which I really didn't like. I'm not exactly in the market, but my Hydroflask is 950ml and I could use a smaller one just for lighter commutes. I appreciate the enthusiastic water bottle discourse and recommendation.
WavryWimos@reddit
If you like it then stick with it, no point fixing what's not broken.
I've gone through a bunch of "premium" water bottles because some little niggle always infuriated me. I hate an exposed mouthpiece because in my opinion it provides zero benefit while introducing only downsides, so a ton of water bottles are already out for me. Ended up with the Brümate Rise and am loving it so far. Pretty spenny, but works great, and I don't have some fucking straw sticking out of my water bottle like those tumblers that the yanks seem to be in love with.
musicmagicmayhem@reddit
The large Stanley Quencher is perfect for me - I work at a job when I don’t have time to refill a smaller bottle multiple times during the day. It looks ridiculous but it works!
Massive_Resource2887@reddit
I still love mine use it every day. I do have a smaller flip top bottle for out and about though.
blenderider@reddit
I have a ~950ml Hydroflask. I just find Stanley’s shape impractical for use in any type of holder
NoisyGog@reddit
I’ll fight you with Yeti, or Thermos.
PurpleJuis@reddit
They don't insulate any better than a £10 cup. The burning car video was a marketing ploy.
BellaSeashell@reddit
Stanley is a great brand but the cups were a fleeting trend.
FolkyWanderer@reddit
Better than yeti in your opinion?
BlissVision@reddit
I use the Kinto Tumbler. Japanese..

zmeikei@reddit
Lol really? I don't think I know anyone in my circle carrying a Stanley. Everyone carries a tiger or zojirushi if they need a thermal bottle
ArbitraryMeritocracy@reddit
I thought they were found to contain lead?
frankchester@reddit
It was if you yanked the bottom padding bit off the outside of the cup and tested the then-exposed part. Trace amounts of lead.
AHoneyman@reddit
Didn't they gave lead in them
PeteWTF@reddit
I got given a Stanley beer mug thing for Christmas, it doesn't even have a lid and I can leave it and come back to ice still not melted the next day. Love it
amzlrr@reddit
I opted for an owala because of the sip/gulp fanciness and I’ve been swayed - much prefer them to my stanley
GingerSnapBiscuit@reddit
Yeh but the point is EVERYONE gets obsessed with it briefly, often to the detriment of the company. I imagine Stanley went on a massive overproduction binge and are going to have issues with an overabundance of on hand stock for a while since they are no longer "the thing".
ThisIsMyRedditAcct20@reddit
Yeti.

Every year there is another trendy drinking vessel.
cold_tap_hot_brew@reddit
Yeah if you buy one for life but the recent trend with kinds to buy a new colour or pattern every few weeks was definitely not about it being a great brand. I believe it was the guy who marketed crocs got hired onto the Stanley cup marketing team.
Flying_Wilson17@reddit

IaMnoTaLlanImal42@reddit

majkkali@reddit

user-604@reddit
Stanley is brilliant. People still buy the new ones. Me I buy everything in their hammer green because they are a quality product. They ain't a drink or a chocolate rubbish
cold_tap_hot_brew@reddit
If you buy one for its whole long lifespan as intended then fine but there was a viral trend that had people collecting these heavily produced drink vessels like Pokémon cards.
It was a stupid trend that had crowds in the us surging into wallmart etc for the new limited edition designs because of influencers. It was wasteful consumerism and Stanley made sure to keep up the hype so I don’t have any respect for them as a brand.
Yorkshireteaonly@reddit
Is it true that Stanley bottles contain lead?
cold_tap_hot_brew@reddit
I didn’t know so I looked it up and found this bbc article which says :
intergalacticscooter@reddit
I still see prime all over the place. I think they have calmed down a bit with the marketing and also focus on hydration type drinks.

Peter-Norfolk@reddit
My stepson still has lots of empty Prime bottles, and some full, from the height of the craze as they are worth hundreds of pounds in his mind. He was 12 at the time and knew everything lol. They may have had a little value at the time, but not now
Gloomy_Pastry@reddit
I was in the local pub/eatery conneted to a hotel for breafast in the height of prime. there was a kid on the next table that refused to go and pick his breakfast as he was certain somone would come and steal his prime bottle.

Rude-Possibility4682@reddit
I loved Biscoff in the 80s, when you got an individual one, if you bought a filter coffee in a cafe. I'm so glad it's easier to find.
atsevoN@reddit
Are you sure you aren’t thinking of a biscotti
Rude-Possibility4682@reddit
No you used to get a single Lotus Biscoff in a clear packet, with a Rombouts filter coffee in some cafes. The biscuits were stamped Rombouts, but were made by Lotus who make biscoff.
atsevoN@reddit
Ah okay fair enough
SuperBiggles@reddit
The biscuits are nice, and it’s not a bad flavour. It’s just when EVERY pastry/bakery shop is selling sickly, Biscoff to the max Cheesecakes, buns, brioche, cakes, etc…
DiscoDoberman@reddit
Never tried the biscuits.
But also a bit miffed that traybake sellers/bakeries seem to have swapped long-time classics for sickly sweet biscoff/caramelized biscuit EVERYTHING.
I think it would work great used sparingly with a proper, rich ice-cream.
But alone it's just super sweet and nothing else to me.

I think the current/emerging trends are seafood broils, tinned fish, ube, and maybe dining while seated at the bar. Not sure any is going to break through like hot honey did, and they’re certainly no pulled pork.
Ok_Somewhere505@reddit
I’m mad about the tinned fish thing. I liked that it was cheap and tasty and accessible and interesting. Now it’s increasingly expensive and tasty and only accessible when not sold out. The only potential flip side is that it might get more interesting as more places spot the demand.
Sainsbury’s brought out a dill pickle flavoured tuna recently which is a change from the standard 3-4 flavours that even Lidl and Aldi now do.

Like, sweet spicy cornflakes, and if its a bit too spicy and you need to drink some milk then well, you already have some in your mouth.
idkabtmygenderhelp@reddit
Idk when it was a thing per se, but its tasty - if you want to try it, mix sriracha with honey, and out it on a meat feast pizza
Feelincheekyson@reddit
I’ve been offered hot honey on pizzas from quite a few places and I presumed it was honey that had been warmed up, didn’t strike me to think they meant spicy honey
idkabtmygenderhelp@reddit
It is really tasty tho, you should give it a try, and the reason its not spicy honey is cuz its american
jobblejosh@reddit
Can confirm. Was in the states two years ago and had a chicken-in-biscuit sandwich with hot honey.
As in a fried chicken breast sandwiched betwixt two halves of a giant American biscuit (if you're unfamiliar with them, they're like a savoury scone, but layered and flaky inside rather than solely caky like our scones), with hot honey as a sauce inside.
I could have devoured two of them.

TheBlueprint666@reddit

kaetror@reddit
Because it's cheaper.
Adding salt means less sugar, means lower production costs.
But rather than pass on that saving they made it sound like a luxury and charged a premium for it.
Now it's almost the default, and nobody questions it because we remember it being a fancy thing not that long ago.
LoveBeBrave@reddit
Salted caramel is more widespread than caramel ever was.
It’s also not cheaper - they add salt on top of the sugar, it doesn’t replace it.
yolo_snail@reddit
Because it's better than unsalted caramel. It's not as sickly

But the fact that it's still around, and still the superior way to eat pork, suggests that it was more than a fad.
kaetror@reddit
Clothes from the 00's are still around, doesn't make them still be a fad.
The fad bit is where everyone goes mental for a specific thing and it's everywhere for a while, not that the thing only exists at all for that time.
Bacon/bacon flavour got added to everything for a bit.
Pulled pork was everywhere - there were some places you couldn't get a burger without it.
Lotus biscoff biscuits were invented in 1932, but the obsession with them is only a couple years old.
XihuanNi-6784@reddit
Since when did the definition of fad include 'totally disappeared and cannot be found now in any form'?
Krakshotz@reddit
It’s still around but nowhere near as in-your-face anymore
Aardvark_Man@reddit
That's like saying bacon was a fad, though.
It got stupidly overhyped by the lolrandom type stuff, and you had bacon flavoured everything, but it's been popular before and after as well.
I don't think it was a fad, just a weird hype phase hit.
MissionLet7301@reddit
So I mean in a way it wasn't a fad.
Bars and restaurants just aren't in your face about their new pulled pork burger because a pulled pork burger on the menu is no more notable than a chicken burger or a burger with bacon.
RodneyRodnesson@reddit
Perhaps you could say it started as a fad.
Never heard of it since the 90s and then it popped up everywhere. KFC even did pulled chicken because of it — https://www.marketingweek.com/kfc-launches-pulled-chicken-to-exploit-fashionable-street-food-trend.
I think it's like salted caramel too.
These may have been around somewhere for longer but suddenly became very widespread and popular (aka a fad) and some remain but some (perhaps most?) fade away again.
UnacceptableUse@reddit
most things that were a fad are still around in some way. Pogs, beanie babies, bitcoin, NFTs, etc all still exist but nowhere near the popularity they once had
GingerSnapBiscuit@reddit
Dubai Chocolate is still around, but for a time everyone was fucking obsessed with it. The "fad" part of it was the obsession, not the food itself.
RodneyRodnesson@reddit
KFC even launched pulled chicken because it was a fad — https://www.marketingweek.com/kfc-launches-pulled-chicken-to-exploit-fashionable-street-food-trend/
LongsandsBeach@reddit
Bacon is still around and that was clearly a fad thing around 2010 too.
tmr89@reddit
Bacon is the superior way to eat pork
pajamakitten@reddit
That trend is so 2012.
GingerSnapBiscuit@reddit
As with most of these things its not really a "fad" but there was definitely a time when EVERYONE was putting it on EVERYTHING and that was the fad.

Pulled pork fad was the worst
eggs_and_ham_i_am@reddit
My thoughts exactly.
They may as well have said roast potatoes.
ResplendentBear@reddit
It was an enormous fad. It was in beef burgers, in rolls, at every restaurant. If you like shredded, mushy, lightly spiced pork there's worse things to eat, but it's the definition of fad.
neilm1000@reddit
Oh a few years ago now, but it was everywhere.

Pulled pork still is very popular, at least round here, especially with nachos.
Hot honey - yeah fair enough!
MrTourette@reddit
I wouldn't be ride or die for hot honey, but it's lovely on something like halloumi kebabs or.... um ... Yeah anyway it's good on halloumi kebabs.
OldConstant182@reddit
Hot honey will never die for me. On pizza, fried chicken etc.
iamnas@reddit
Yeah, it’s like lime Regis. I have never had a Regis let alone a lime flavoured one

I'm afraid I'm going to have to call you out on salted caramel.
Capable_Cheetah_8363@reddit
I still see a fair few salted caramel things about! And i actually had a pulled pork sandwich yesterday! Never had hot honey and dont quite get it. But i get what you mean. They used to be everywhere
Margaet_moon@reddit
I am dying at the pulled pork. How did I miss this craze 😂
betterland@reddit

Remember when people would wear T-shirt that said ‘KALE’
humanracer@reddit
LOL goodness pulled pork (which I liked before I become vegetarian) and Salted Caramel were the first two that came to mind when reading this thread. Crazy.
Hot Honey is still popular though. That only just started recently. I had a a hot honey dip with my pizza last month.
DennisTheConvict@reddit
I only discovered 'Boneless Hot Honey Saucin' at Popeye's Chicken in the last 6-12 months or so and I have to say I'm a massive fan. And because I'm eating so much of it, I mean that literally.

I feel like a crazy person everytime I see these conversations and no one mentions the one closest to home. The fucking POST CODE LOTTERY.
Whether it's what GP you can register at or what school your kids can go to you could be one street over but with a different postcode your quality of life could be significantly worse than your neighbours.
But nah let's advertise gambling on TV under the same name!
ceelo_purple@reddit
I had the exact same thought and looked into it.
Turns out we imported the gambling one wholesale from the Netherlands, where it operated under (the Dutch version of) the same name. The phrase isn't used to mean government failures and rising inequality over there, so there were no negative associations at the time the thing was christened.
There was presumably somebody in the UK who had to make a call on whether to rename the British version to avoid negative associations, but it wasn't a straight up "Baby Bojo liked to build toy buses" level of algorithm manipulation, like I'd initially suspected.
Elemteearkay@reddit
Thanks. That's made me a little bit less pissed off about it. It's still gonna be a peeve, for sure, but it doesn't quite sting as much as when I thought it was entirely intentional.
roygbiv1000@reddit
They also do incredible things for charities on both a local and national scale.
LanguidLoop@reddit
I am sure that the Post Code Lottery started after the phrase was a thing, so that people would think "I have heard of that, it must be legit".
fblthpthewise@reddit
If by that you mean absolutely true facts, then yes.
726wox@reddit
Except for the fact that no one called that act Dubai chocolate before someone on the internet made up this theory

The average person in the world isn't as sharp as they like to think unfortunately, most can't even grasp basic efficiency with day to day life and just make life for themselves and everyone else more difficult.
But at the same time, there's a lot of idiots out there swallowing everything they're fed on the internet, just go through random subs and you'll see people believing the dumbest propaganda, or the most disprovable conspiracy.

Hairy_Month819@reddit
It was the specific types of nuts, such as peanuts, that werent declared. People can be allergic to o Peanuts yet still able to eat pistachio's.

Bughunter9001@reddit
And for good reason, there are loads of examples of things that are x flavoured, but don't actually contain that ingredient, when it comes to potentially fatal allergies, giving manufacturers zero discretion and compelling them to disclose them in a consistent way is important

You still have Pistachio flavoured versions of loads of chocolate brands. Which is the main flavour of Dubai chocolate
kaetror@reddit
I looked this up yesterday.
Pistachios were suddenly everywhere as there was a bumper crop, creating a huge supply that totally outstripped normal demand.
Two things can happen in that situation; prices drop because it's no longer a luxury product, or new products are made to keep it feeling like a luxury.
They went with door number 2.
Very clever marketing sold it as a luxury product, cashing in on the Dubai brand of opulence and expense. This drove a trend, which drove demand.
Now we're in the tail end, where production has increased as farmers chase demand, but it's now going into everything; I saw pistachio croissants in Lidl. Discount shops will keep selling pistachio products for a while yet, but we'll move onto the next trend soon enough.
This is similar to salted caramel. Adding salt is cheaper as it requires less sugar to taste as sweet, but SC was sold as a luxury, and demanded a premium price. Now it's ubiquitous, it's not special, and the craze has died down.
Ok_Kick_3982@reddit

Lidle sell it. It’s like £4 for a small bar.
TRFKTA@reddit
I tend to see it when I go to Costco
DameKumquat@reddit
They seem to be just calling it pistachio flavour now. I think the shredded wheat bits didn't really catch on.
Tzunamitom@reddit
You can diss the chocolate all you want but knafeh is an absolute S-tier dessert when done well and doesn’t deserved the comparison to…actually come to think of it, I’m a big fan of Shredded Wheat too.
DameKumquat@reddit
Totally - good knafeh, baklava etc are all wonderful. Cheap versions, not so much.
In Kuwait they had a pastry counter selling nothing but variations on those, about 20 yards long. I only managed about 30 types which was about a tenth of the selection.

I work for a certain Swiss chocolate company and honestly the Dubai bars and pistachio flavoured chocolates are still some of our bestsellers.
Interestingly there’s now a a big shift towards matcha flavoured products so be prepared to see a lot of that out and about lol
Fine-State8014@reddit
Lindt still have pistachio filled chocolate, and pistachio lindors
Plaisteach@reddit
Pistachio Lindors have been around for years haven’t they?
Disgruntled__Goat@reddit
I never saw them until around 6 months ago.
Plaisteach@reddit

Seems to have been 2019 and I remember seeing them in the Lindt store last year in the pick ‘n’ mix Lindor section.
I’m presuming that with Dubai Chocolate going viral they’ve had a marketing push.
Fine-State8014@reddit
I don't know, I thought it was just to do with the same craze.
pet-fleeve@reddit
I still see variants of it (much cheaper now) along with prime and those lunchable ripoffs that mr. Beast pushed, just without the marketing there was before.
Ok-Blackberry-3534@reddit
It's a metaphor for Dubai. Lots of marketing. Not much substance.
Shitelark@reddit

eatingonlyapples@reddit
May be a conspiracy theory, but I heard that the whole pistachio trend was manufactured to promote the pistachio crops in the United States. These snack product trends can usually be traced back to the good old USA.
Floyd_Pink@reddit
Flash in the pan... which is a blessing because it was fucking horrible. Give me a Kinder Bueno any day of the week.
quoole@reddit
Dubai chocolate may have gone in name, but every chocolate product still seems to be sticking pistachio in there!

floralflourish@reddit
It’s all in home bargains and b&m
YouCantArgueWithThis@reddit
Nowhere. It's still here, now even stronger, because there are dozens of variations. Get into a Home Bargain and be amazed.
JonEdwardsRandomNum@reddit

2infinitiandblonde@reddit
Who would’ve thought that overly sweet overpriced chocolate with very little actual chocolate would not stay popular?
Ultimate_os@reddit
Fell out of trend. Probably because it wasn't great and had a confusing name.
DevSiarid@reddit
Bought some one clearance like last month for £1 to know what the big deal was. Then after trying it I still feel like I wasted £1 as I couldn’t finish it.
CrucialElement@reddit
Regular reminder that 'Dubai Chocolate' used to be a term for the horrible fecal and sexual abuse of influencers by Dubai's elite. It has now been drowned by their new export. Don't forget.
Particular-Swim-9293@reddit
Saw some for the first time yesterday in local Tesco. Dubai style but looked proper enough. Almost bought it. Didn't buy it because wanted something else more.
EUskeptik@reddit
Too many cheap imitations sold at silly high prices.
-oo-
Airurando-jin@reddit
Lots of places still have e variations now, just cheaper
theriddlr@reddit
The name 'Dubai' has lost its sheen, chocolate prices have gone up. I do like clones of it as I like the kataifi crunch.
prasaysno@reddit

HR_Specter@reddit
It tasted average and it was well overpriced. I’ll admit I tried to get some, then saw how much they were selling it for in the high street and then I was like fuck that. Greed killed it.
Male_strom@reddit

It's just Pistachio chocolate now, Lindt do a box of truffles and did an Easter egg this year (I got one for my mum)
McTraveller@reddit
They've done the pistachio balls way longer than dubai chocolate has been popular
RunsWithGlueSticks@reddit
Into the sea, hopefully.
Most other food fads in this thread were actually alright in my opinion (pulled pork and salted caramel, at least) but honestly Dubai chocolate was okay at best and insanely expensive. It was driven by TT influencers and seemed to disappear as quickly as it arrived.
Related: I've got a lovely little local shop and the guy who owns it has half the shop normal grocery bits and bobs, and the other half is sweets/ crisps and loads of random imported/ TT famous items. He has a little stash by the till: sometimes it's hot pickles in bags (last summer I believe), weird Kit Kats, random fizzy drinks, whatever. He had various Dubai things there for a while, even a Dubai chocolate fizzy thing, but they've been gone a while now.
I love him because I always know what the kids at the school I work at are into at any given moment.

throwaway8373469238@reddit
It’s disgusting junk
eldunenorap@reddit
Never tried one - just seemed horrendously overpriced. Additionally, even though I like pistachio, I couldn't get over that the bars looked like mushy peas covered in chocolate.
dinkidoo7693@reddit
It’s pistachio in everything else instead now. Nobody wants palm oil chocolate so they plonk the pistachio in croissants and yogurt and other things instead

TippyTurtley@reddit
Not sure but it's how I discovered I had a pistachio allergy
kh_ram@reddit
I think the worst damage done by Dubai chocolate was inflating the price of every viral product - though I blame Prime for that too. At first, the chocolate bars were having to be exported from a single shop in Dubai making them by hand, so of course they were expensive. Then every tom, richard and harry made mass produced versions with an RRP or 10-15 bucks. The Lindt one was a tenner even though it probably cost pennies more than their normal bars which sold for a fraction of that. Next it was angel hair and they made that stupid expensive too because suckers will pay for it. The next trendy food product will be £10+ a pop at least, mark my words.

Dubai style chocolate I see in a lot of shops. We brought some real Dubai chocolate back ourselves last year from Dubai when we moved back. I dont eat it but have gifted quite a few bars to family and friends.

Its funny, I went to co-op today and saw areo pistachio and immediately thought of dubai chocolate! Never had it but figured it was just a fad
BrissBurger@reddit
I only see it in bargain buckets and on the counter next to tills in small corner-shops. I think it's a dead duck now.
themattigan@reddit
Was at gun wharf today, saw a big "Tokyo chocolate" display, looks like they are looking for the next in fashion flavour combo. Looks like the Tokyo chocolate is just Matcha flavour or "green tea" in common parlance.
DiscoDoberman@reddit

GangVocals@reddit
The reality is that the global pistachio yield in 2025 was higher than usual (a record year) so the dubai chocolate phase was a manufactured fad to sell the extra.

johnlewisdesign@reddit
Overpriced chocolate - with massively marketer led approval but no actual consumer data - in removal from shelves shocker
Mission_Beach_7098@reddit
I used to work for a convenience retailer. We frequently had new products from the major confectionery manufacturers. Our normal product lines would be ordered by the store but these new products were centrally allocated. So you might have 10 or 20 boxes turn up on a delivery without warning.
We'd display them in a good promotional spot, usually next to the tills or in a bin next to the main confectionary display. Almost without exception these products would initially fly off the shelves and then sales would quickly dwindle. So you'd better hope you'd sold all the allocated stock before the novelty had worn off. I'm sure there are some but I can't remember a single line which sold well enough to be stocked permanently, Dubai chocolate just repeating that pattern!
OrganicPoet1823@reddit
It’s vile the sooner it stopped the better
aembleton@reddit
They still have it in home bargains
Immorals1@reddit
It's a tiktok food trend. Once people actually got to try it (after paying way too much), they realised it was shit. Shops were surprisingly slow at leaping on the trend, so that's why it's all in bargain bins now.
gregRichards2002@reddit
The hype died down and ‘Several "Dubai-style" pistachio chocolate bars and spreads have been recalled in 2025 due to undeclared allergens (peanuts, nuts, wheat) and potential Salmonella risks. Major recalls involve Fix It, Le Damas, Noesis, and Brookie Bakes brands due to nut risks, while others were recalled over Salmonella and wheat concerns’ - Apple A.I overview
Drwynyllo@reddit
Never cared about it, don't miss it.
Whatever the reason for its origin, it just ended up as a stupid marketing gimmick, designed to make as much profit as possible.
ihavetakenthebiscuit@reddit
It was a hype food for Instagram. Hype is over now.
frumentorum@reddit
It was part of a trade war - the US was competing on pistachio production to impact Iran's economy and then had to find a way to make people actually want all the pistachios they grew.
Sburns85@reddit
Taste has moved on. The pistachio paste is in the discount places now. Not sure what latest one is. But for some reason dry aged meat is massive again

Ever since I found out the real meaning of “Dubai Chocolate” I could never look at a bar without thinking of ‘that’ meaning!
South_Leek_5730@reddit
I bought some that was reduced, it's shit. That's why. Now of course this is my own opinion and it is subjective but if all the Dubai chocolate is reduced and/or disappearing this validates my view. Like easter eggs are now shit and there are shelves full of them at the supermarket unsold and still overpriced.

APiousCultist@reddit
I imagine it drove pistachio prices up, and the real stuff with the fine pastry threads doesn't last long and is annoying to manufacture. Everything else is just chocolate with pistachio-flavoured cream/"creme" and going to lose popularity when the trend dies. The actual stuff is apparently quite good but not an everyday purchase, a bit like those fancy Japanese strawberries.
Spottyjamie@reddit

The OG is very good (still not the best chocolate I’ve had - that is a small family business from Lyon) - the copies not so much. The OG you can only get via Deliveroo in a short delivery window in Dubai itself bar a pop up in Harrods a few months back. Last year I had to go to great lengths to bring one back from Dubai for my girlfriend and have it in pristine condition. Any other one has tasted rank.
