My husband is 60 and learned yesterday his company is closing. We'll figure it out. We always have, even when the times were tougher. You will too. Wish you all the best.

Your gave me a great idea to make the sign for my birthday "Holly shit I'm still here!". We usually get together for birthdays with our kids and grandkids, and I'm absolutely making this sign in my house. In need a statement, and this is a good one.

Same here, turning 60 this winter. Thinking about my deceased father and my rapidly deteriorating mom, and how pretty soon I'll be next in line and what will my life look like without my parents. But I'm thinking about adding more games to my life since I always prioritize "important" things and rarely allow myself to spend hours gaming which I really enjoy. I want more games and fiction, more things I like and enjoy and less chores and "must do" things. I've been doing those my whole life.

Travel isn’t as glam as it used to be

I enjoy vacations but... We have been flying to Europe once per year, sometimes twice, and then one more vacation somewhere else. This has been going on for 20 years and I'm tired of it. I am not enamored with airports, delayed connecting flights, staying in random hotels due to cancelled flights. Back in the day, the experience was much more enjoyable, pre 9/11, and again pre covid. Since covid the air travel really changed for the worst and air industry is starting to treat us like cattle. You may purchase tickets with one air carrier, than they are transferred to the other, this may cause to be downgraded or seats to be not what you picked due to different aircraft layout... If I can, I fly Lufthansa to Europe because I have not had this experience with them (yet). But that's not always an option. It used to be an experience. Now it's a nuisance. I still have to go to Europe every year because there is my family, but if it wasn't for them I wouldn't go, especially not if i need a connecting flight. Door to door 22 hours average I arrive like someone chewed me up and spit me out. If it is a rare occasion, it would be different. When one does it consistently over few decades, it's no longer a thrill.

Fellow aging gen x’ers, ever try a standing desk at your office job?

Posted by Dittopotamus@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 231 comments

Lower_Classroom835@reddit

I guess it depends. I have a stranding desk at work but if I stand for prolong period of time my back hurts. And I don't have a back problem. I'm fit active runner, but standing is not for me. I even got the floor mat for standing hoping it will help, but it didn't change anything.

I tend to think I'm the best version of myself right now. The journey is not complete yet, and I'm excited to see how much I improve personally in the future, especially after the stress of work is removed from my life. I've been working on bettering myself the entire time in all different aspects and I'm happy how my life turned out. Hope it continues for little while longer.

Ah, I understand. That's why I asked because for me the drive is lower, but once I get into it, I love it. So as you said, it's a feedback loop. I know I will have a good time, I want it and go for it. I'm happy for you not giving up. Finding a counselor that works well for both of you is a gift in itself. I think once we hit certain age, it requires a bit of work for one reason or another. Wish you all the best, you seem to be on the right path.

I hope this helps a bit; My 25yo coworker married a 55yo guy. Fast forward 10 years, they have 5 children. In spite what everyone thought and said at the beginning, they are perfect for each other and have a deep bond. You got this!

Have you tried tadalafil? There are many things today but tadalafil seems the best for people in a relationship when you can have unplanned intimacy any time. For special occasions try Rugiet. It's pricy, and heavier on ingredients so for occasional use. But it provides extras like nothing else. Pt-141 nasal spray works for many. It may be finicky and works best if you take a little nap between administration and action. It also comes as an injection, which is more predictable but my husband is not interested in any type of injections. Cannabis in smaller doses does wonders too. Have fun, enjoy life and remember, there is more to sex than intercourse. My gyno told me that many women express greater satisfaction in sex after their husband slows down a bit because they start paying attention to the woman in the ways she always craved but rarely had in younger years. Pounding is not the only way of sex. And lastly, bring toys to the bedroom and use them during refractory period.

Anyone in here move after youngest graduated high school? How did it go?

Lower_Classroom835@reddit

I would say it's better to wait and see where your kids settle after college. We moved when our grandchild was born to be close. Our second child decided they wanted to live close to the family few years later and now we are all 10 min away from each other. You don't know if they will come home after graduation. Wait to see so you don't have to move twice.

I park in a large parking lot or at a large garage at work. Since I need to do this daily, I learned to take a mental note where I left my car. It's practice, and now it is on autopilot. As soon as I exit my car, my mind immediately pains a picture where I parked. Since I started this 8 years ago, I don't have a problem any more. We can do this, it's all just practice even if we are directionally challenged.

In my thirties I had two children and I was waking up at 5am to start preparing dinner, than made breakfast, took kids to school, went to work. After work, drive kids to activities, came home, finish dinner, put load of laundry, sign the school paperwork (one needs a personal assistant just for school paperwork). Put kids to bed, fold the laundry, take care of dishes, and whatever else was needed, go to sleep at 1am, rinse and repeat. Just writing this gives me a nightmare. I had migraine headaches from stress. Today my kids are out of the house but I need more rest than before. I cannot function on 4hrs of sleep any more. I'm happy I had my kids young when I could do all those things.

I don't remember what I did for my 50th. It probably wasn't anything special. My 55th was memorable. What I'm trying to say is, don't let an obscure number dictate your life. Do special things what you feel like it, setting expectations just for a number often leads to disappointment. Enjoy the life when it gives you joy freely, not when it's forced.

Peace of mind and stability. At this age, everything has been worked out and life is easy. The long marriage where kinks are ironed out long ago. The finances are in order and we are established. The kids are adults and stable with their significant others. The grandkids come for sleepovers at an established frequency. I feel good in my skin and appreciate the fruits of my labor. The early days of hustle are long gone and now just a memory. I know who I am, what I want, and not afraid too ask for it. I carved a space under the sun and shaped it the way it suits me. I just hope it goes on like this for a while so I can truly continue to enjoy it, as it has been quite a trip to get here!

Elastics - mostly popular with girls. Elastic band stretch between two players legs. and third one jumps in and moves the elastic with their legs singing a rhyme while moving the elastic in rhythmically. Haven't seen it in decades.

In my opinion, it shouldn't be about being a man, but being a decent human being. With that said, after raising two children who are now in their deep 30s, I think we "raise" our children with words, and our behavior, until about 15. After that, we can help steer them in the right direction, but the raising part has already settled in.

I never could do those stupid 3D stare picture thingies.

It's great that your new hobby lead to success in life. However, not everyone gets sucked into the games, cards, sports... There are people who can do it without getting so absorbed to ruin their life. We are all different. But kudos to having self control and doing something different that changed your life trajectory into a real success. .

I totally relate. It brings such a cognitive dissonance, "Wait, do I look this old? Maybe I look young for my age? Calm down, it's a trap, you look as old as you are, move on".

Same. Mine have also multiplied. Both married, third baby grandchild arriving today!!! They are great cooks and make awesome meals for family gatherings, I have a team of people to ask for opinion who have my best interest in mind... So many good things that enrich my life but at the same time give me the freedom to enjoy my life at home in the way I like it. Win win.

We have our kids to raise humans and when the time comes, we need to let them fly. When they first leave the house, it feels empty but we should not forget that was the ultimate goal all along. Their independence is the proof we have successfully finished one of the toughest jobs - raising a human. Now it's time to sit back and enjoy their company. Watch these awesome humans become part of society, fall in love, have a significant other, bring more humans into the world, or whichever path they choose, watch them with wonder as they came from you, but different.

Yes, I mentioned it in another reply. I'm in a long term marriage to a very reliable man. But since the beginning of our life I was working very hard to earn enough to be able to support the family on my own if needed. I also worked on developing other skills, like painting my own house, deck, fixing things. Not knowing how to ask for help bites me at work, bit I will be able to retire early, so there is the benefit.

I find reading your post very helpful as it tells me I'm not alone on my island. We may not have exact circumstances, but both have arrived to the same outcome. I have been well functioning my whole life, just my inner world is off, and that's who I am. As I'm writing this at 3am, I'm up because my neighbor's child has been crying for an hour. He cries every evening, and then some more through the night. Every night.. as they let him cry himself to sleep. How disturbing is that? Here is another person in making who will be similar adult as us, wondering what happened to him.
