What did you do for your 50th?? People keep asking me what I want to do and I’m over it. Just came back from vacation - so staying local. Please decide for me.
Robviously-duh@reddit
I had chemotherapy on my 50th birthday.. don't recommend.. lol.. makes me hesitant about celebrating my 60th this summer..
princessbubblgum@reddit
Yes, I spent my 50th birthday and 20th wedding anniversary supporting my husband while he went through chemo and radiation. I thought maybe those special occasions could be celebrated later, but they are just gone like they never existed (even though he fully recovered).
thisgirlnamedbree@reddit
I turned 50 in January. It was during that big snow and ice storm and I was at home watching people dig themselves out. My family took me to dinner and I went shopping that weekend. I'm planning a "six months later" party this July at the park. The theme is 80s.
alfundo@reddit

I did a cruise for my actual birthday, and 2 weeks before threw a birthday party for my parents house (finished 2 weeks before I was born) just so I could hang with family and friends.

Mine is next week and I’m in complete denial. I took the week off work and have arranged things so the actual day is going to be a quiet day alone at home.

Went to London and Paris for my 50th. Saw Nine Inch Nails in London for the 12th time at that point.
kittycat_34@reddit
I organized a big family trip to Destin, FL. 13 of us in a huge beachfront house. Was going great til the last 2 days when my sister in law went septic, had to go to hospital by ambulance and ended up getting her leg amputated. (She had been on PD dialysis for awhile and had a sore on her foot she kept ignoring and that's what went septic). Not how I wanted to memorialize my entrance into my 50s. Sadly sis in law had other leg amputated 6 mo ago as well for same situation...foot wound out of control...it's so sad she doesn't care for herself better. Opened up my eyes though to get myself on a better health journey! We gotta keep mobile and active!

My parents never celebrated my birthday growing up, I didn't even know what month it was. Lol So, I'm going to have a party. I've only had one birthday party in my life before, and that was 21. I've been saving them for the good ones. 😎
Turbulent_Bet_6861@reddit
It’s 16 months away for me and I’m ready struggling to get my head around 50
CampVictorian@reddit
My 50th was a bit of a letdown, but I took the reins and went to my local amusement park to lift my mood on the night before. The park happened to be open until late, and while I was there, I thought, “I want to be riding my favorite roller coaster at the stroke of midnight, as my 50th commences”. It was cathartic, fun and memorable.
Pretend_Passenger586@reddit
My birthday is so close to Christmas so probably nothing much. It’s already an expensive time of year and I’m not paying for anything extra. I might have a piece of real cake this year when I turn 50 though. I have been a sugar abstainer for a long time so I usually do not have cake. So maybe I will this time. I’m mostly hoping to meet my strength goal of doing a pull up by 50. Just one. Send big muscle vibes to the universe for me. 💪 that’s the only gift I truly want
siamesecat1935@reddit
That's me too, so I postponed my trip until fall of the following year.
You can do the pullup! that's a great goal! I just turned 60, and work out 2x a week. Small gym, small classes, and I love it. I also can't do a pullup, but am definitely much stronger than before I started.
Equal_Trash6023@reddit
50 wasnt to bad. Im stressing over 60. I will be an empty nester (i started late).
siamesecat1935@reddit
I did a solo trip. My birthday though is at the end of the year, and I didn't go for another 10 months or so. Needed to save I did about 5 days in London, and as I flew through Iceland, I spent a few days there on my way back. It was almost half the cost of a direct flight! Although the hotel for 3 nights was more than my 6 nights in London! But it was so worth it. I did what I wanted, when I wanted, and had a great time. the only negative was the weather didn't cooperate in Iceland for me to see the Northern Lights, but that was ok. the rest of the trip was amazing.
Bahlore@reddit
I did not plan anything, I was just going to roll with it and have a normal day. My brother and sister had other plans, they all flew in (didnt warn me); dad and step mom showed up and we partied for a week straight. I hadn't seen them in years (we all moved to different states etc) so it was fun to see everyone. Mom tried to make it but she got snowed out; and was unable to make it.

No celebration...just a good time with friends.
BryOnRye@reddit
Turn 50 in July and split with my long term partner at the back end of last year.
Had been planning to go to an F1 weekend (always wanted to, never been to one). But waiting to hear if I get made redundant, should find out in the next week.
So will most likely be a long walk with the dog that ends at a dog friendly bar for a couple of drinks.

What I'm trying to say is, don't let an obscure number dictate your life. Do special things what you feel like it, setting expectations just for a number often leads to disappointment. Enjoy the life when it gives you joy freely, not when it's forced.

I turn 50 this July. My plan is to climb my highest mountain so far. And we're having a fancy dinner to watch the moon rise on another summit (with a gondola for that one, though) on the night itself.
Before that, back home, two of my best friends are taking me to see the Rocky Horror Show at Studio 54 before it closes and a small group of my best nerds are visiting the Enterprise and Concorde at the Intrepid.
1970s plane and test spacecraft, 1970s musical in a former 1970s(/80s) nightclub. Perfect to celebrate 1970s me!

I had a double mastectomy.
While it’s necessary for some, I do not recommend this to celebrate lol.
As soon as I’m all healed up (it was 3 weeks ago), I am taking some close friends out of town to a luxury resort and spa. We are going to do fine dining, spa treatments, shopping, the works! I’m so excited to just have some time away from it all and relax and celebrate.
I did a mini celebration with my family, just gifts and cards and it was very sweet. We are taking a trip to the beach in 6 weeks (I still have another month before I’m cleared for all activity) together. Then another beach trip with my daughter and parents (who are out of town and couldn’t make it - mom is in chemo and dad just had a hip replacement)
And then another trip with the in-laws.
June/July/August will be all about celebrating 🥳

Nothing. Well, my husband took me and the family out for a nice dinner but that was it. Not even a birthday cake. No gifts at all from the husband. I was really disappointed 😢
Capital-Meringue-164@reddit
I’m sorry 😞 That’s why I took the reins for mine last year - I knew I’d be disappointed if I counted on someone else to make it special. I plan parties professionally, so I knew I could create a great gathering - the party was a blast. I’m at a point in my life where I am just accepting that I need to make my own fun when I want it.

Road trip. First one with my spouse where we both had the time to just explore.
I collect pressed penny’s and we both love random historical markers or roadside attractions.
For my spouses 50th we went to London. My first time but he had been before. So we planned around what he’d like to see and I found the lesser known interesting spots.
Like in the movie Hudson hawk there are these scenes in the Vatican railway. That’s actually London old postal rail and you can ride it. I’m a chef do I found us a couple places to eat and we had tea at the British museum.
I managed with his best friend to throw him a surprise party. Small group of about 30 people. Good food and board games with great friends.

I set up a reoccurring tattoo appointment every four weeks for the whole year.
I started by working on a cover up of a really shitty tattoo for a couple months, then started getting fun colorful ones. I got a matching tattoos with my husband and with my best friend. My last one was from dungeon crawler carl and I love it so so much.
I have my next appointment in a couple weeks. I put six weeks between this time because my daughter was due to have her baby, which happened Friday. So, for my next appointment I'm taking her with me so we can get tattoos for the new baby. My best friend is also going for a tattoo that day, which is just an amazing way to spend a day.
I set out to do some self-care and ended up bonding with everyone I love the most. It's been amazing! (My husband, who had one tattoo, now has four! I've always had a bunch.)
Zetavu@reddit
Sat on the couch, ate what I wanted to, drank some choice beverage, watched a movie I had been saving up. Wife and kids took care of the rest. Perfect day.
We stopped celebrating birthdays in our 20s, birthdays are for children, not adults. Only thing adults should do is use them as an excuse to spend money they normally would not on something they want but never felt the need to buy, be it a meal, a trip, or a cool smoker with automatic pellet feed.

I did solo trip to Costa Rica with G Adventures. It’d been on bucket list for many years so figured it’s now or never! Plus I’m afraid of heights so thought I’d challenge myself and do zip lining. Cause figured if I’m going to do it, might as well be in Costa Rica. Bad idea lol. Our group was booked into the longest zip line consisting of 8-9 zip lines. I made it to 3 before I bailed as the 4th one was over a canyon and I would have freaked out! There was huge sign that said no turning back. I was pleased with how far I got! For 50, I threw a party in the back yard. Had about a dozen and a half friends over. I also brought a separate cake to my weekly gaming night a couple of days later.
For 40, I went to the Monterey Aquarium. Got the "It's My Birthday" pin and everything. Also threw a larger party in the condo where we lived at the time.
60 is coming up soon. Not gonna do much of anything for it.

I wanted to do something big but I had just come back from a vacation in September so I went to the American Treasure Tour museum for the day. Exciting times. And I didn’t do anything for my 40th either. So I guess I’ll have to go BIG for 60.

Stayed home, just me and my husband... he gave me an epic gift (a lathe with associated accoutrements), which immediately became a new passion for me, and now I'm pursuing an unexpected artiartistic endeavour. My 50th was the best!
I'd say if there's something you've always wanted to try, 50 is a good time to do it. Try something big/new that the very thought of excites you.

amycakes76@reddit
Not 50 yet, but I'm also turning 50 this year (in October), so I'll need to figure something out as well. All I know is I don't want a party (surprise or otherwise), and I don't want a huge fuss made over me. That makes me so uncomfortable.
I'd just like to relax most of the day and then go somewhere nice for dinner with my husband and get something yummy for dessert, maybe go to a movie or find a good scary one to watch together at home.
Good luck with your planning!

I’m pretty sure my 50th was when my son made me a cheesecake from scratch. It was the best damn cheesecake I’ve ever had.
CoolJeweledMoon@reddit
For my 50th, I decided to have a get-together with friends & family. I invited my oldest friends from way back along with newer ones plus family & hosted everyone at my place. I included the phrases, "No presents - just your presence." on the invites, & we had a great time!
In fact, we had such a good time that I'm basically planning to do it again for my next one, which will be the Big 60! I have a couple who I've been friends with since our teen years, & all of our birthdays are in the same month. Two of us will be turning 60, so I'm thinking about asking if we can have a party at their place, & I'll take care of all the food. The older I get, the more I genuinely appreciate my friends from way back...

2023 - think I took the day off from work and stayed home. I probably cooked the family prime ribeye steaks. They prefer my steak rub than going out 🤷. Nothing special for the big 5-0.

My birthday was on a weekday so I went to work. We had a gym in the basement so I went for my usual workout. I did some cardio and then stretched out. I pushed myself off the mat and saw a lump forming on my hand. It got half the size of a ping pong ball sooooo-I spent the evening of my birthday in Urgent Care getting an xray…
Impressive-Health670@reddit
I’m sorry that sounds awful, hopefully it was nothing serious and you recovered quickly!

Thanks-nothing broken. Ice reduced the swelling and it was good in a few days. I had a good outing a few weeks later. My friend whose birthday is 7 days earlier than mine and I went on a pub crawl in Asheville NC. It was much more fun than urgent care.

Back in February of this year, I saw Nine Inch Nails. It was the day before my 50th birthday. So perfect timing. I only knew 7 of the 20 songs played. However, was still totally worth it. Got to cross Nine Inch Nails off my music bucket list. Only band left now is Foo Fighters.

Hiking, catching up with friends, two concerts (no one famous lol), and night of dancing with my husband, dinner out with the whole family, and the main event was an evening at a winery with wine and dancing to the 80-ties music with friends and relatives. It was a whole month of fun planned a year ahead to save money.

My birthday is February 12th. I use to work in the restaurant industry. It was difficult to get the day off since it was "close" to Valentines Day. I still put in my request 1 month in advance. I got it off every year.

I think I’d rather have electrodes glued to my balls and electrified to a few hundred volts rather than spend any birthday (or any non-birthday) at Disneyland.
Rhiannon8404@reddit
Well, you should do that then.
AZJHawk@reddit
Only if someone wants me to go to Disneyland. Until that happens, I’ll leave my testicles electrode free. I’ve been to Disney half a dozen times with my kids over the years, but thankfully they’ve outgrown it, so I probably won’t face that choice again.

Kind of the same for me. My mom forced my husband to try to plan a surprise party for me. And at a restaurant I would have never picked.
