Is it just me or…

Lately I’ve noticed that I’ll see a person on a video, or even out in the world and two thoughts enter my mind simultaneously.
That person is old.
I’m older than that person.
But I don’t feel old. Weird.
Ok_Industry3016@reddit
Relatable. People are shocked to know my age. Constantly assumed to be 20 years younger. They even assumed my 10 year younger ex wife was older.
GenXist@reddit
When I was a kid, there were a lot of old people in town. Now, they're all about my age...
ReplyProfessional939@reddit
Yeah right? The people I thought were old then, were alot younger than I am now. Because in my mind as a kid, there were only two kinds of people- kids and grown ups/old people. I remember thinking how old my grandma was back when I was like 5 or 6- she was ancient! In reality she was only like 5 years older than I am now (and I'm still 16!😁)
ReplyProfessional939@reddit
My son is 33, and in my mind I'm still 16, so sometimes I look at my son and think "Damn. He's getting OLD!"
Fair-Wishbone-1190@reddit
Yes! When I see other classmates, I think wow they look so old. Then realize I guess I am too.
Troublemonkey36@reddit
All the time!
Necessary_Giraffe_66@reddit
What’s weird is the new dentist and one of the eye doctors look like kids. We call him the baby dentist cause he got out of school a few years ago
teamdogemama@reddit
The Golden Girls (aside from Sophia) were in their 50's and 60's.
That really messes with me.
hazysummersky@reddit
Perhaps exacerbated by all the lead we were exposed to through leaded gas, paint and the rest. Lead is highly toxic, causing permanent neurological damage in children and cardiovascular issues in adults. There is no safe level of lead exposure. And we sucked it up for thousands of years before realising and phasing it out, mostly.
Greasy-Choirboy@reddit
Watching an old guy's youtube video and he mentions his age (younger than me).
Well, crap.
Lower_Classroom835@reddit
I totally relate. It brings such a cognitive dissonance, "Wait, do I look this old? Maybe I look young for my age? Calm down, it's a trap, you look as old as you are, move on".
Greasy-Choirboy@reddit
Now that I'm thinking about it, I was the oldest person in the gym today. I'm comfortable looking old though. It's like camouflage.
Lower_Classroom835@reddit
I'm just happy I age as I do. Having a body that was used and abused all my life and still works as intended. My face is showing age in the way I appreciate it. I like my maturity.
kevtay1969@reddit
I’m the same OP. New development for me.
hashalanche@reddit
I am way too young to feel as old as I feel. I am way too old to act as young as I do. 🤷♂️
Fight_Tyrnny@reddit
I remember seeing a 40 year old women and thinking... ewwy.. yuck.. old. Now I see a good looking 40 year old women and go... hmmmmm..... yummy.
Admirable-Currency89@reddit
TBH, I liked the 40 year olds when I was 30 lol
Carrollz@reddit
Just recently I was realizing I feel like I'm stuck in my 30s because I see people that age and consider them my peer group and when I'm around people my age I feel like they're my parents and I'm not sure when and how that happened.
Jellybeans74@reddit
Well sort of, except I actually feel old too.
AdultinginCali@reddit
Whenever I see something with a date (like when a movie came out) I always say to myself, I was "blank" when that came out.
Kind_Worry_9836@reddit
Totally. I do this too. The Beatles broke up in 1970. It was blank years before I was born.
AdultinginCali@reddit
He he! That happened when I was -4.
XStonedCatX@reddit
As long as old dudes call me "kiddo," I'm happy 😂
Kind_Worry_9836@reddit
I call my aunt Kid because she's a leap year baby and she's not old enough to drink yet.
EnjoyingTheRide-0606@reddit
The saddest thing to me is older folks who dress and look like they’re 22. Especially when it’s a woman who never changes her hairstyle to her mature age.
Bluered2012@reddit
Or people our age who speak with the latest slang. It’s embarrassing. You’re 50, bit 18. Just because you have tik tok or instagram doesn’t mean you should speak like those who are 30 years younger. Bruh.
EnjoyingTheRide-0606@reddit
They sound so desperate. A female coworker of mine at age 60 still bought jeans in the boys dept. Yes they fit, she’s thin and petite. But they don’t fit her body so she looked awkward wearing them. The only thing I can compare it to is a mature man with a big gut wearing skinny jeans. Just stop!
ribbit_ribbit_splat@reddit
I’d rather be desperate than mean people like you.
Ok-Actuator8579@reddit
Nah. You just stop.
cleveland_leftovers@reddit
Bruh.
Kindly-Might-1879@reddit
Can you point us to where the rules are?
Ok-Actuator8579@reddit
Now what’s sad to me are Redditers trying to police what women wear based on her age.
tungstencoil@reddit
Hard disagree.
Wear what you like and makes you happy.
Why do you care so much about others' fashion that it qualifies as "the saddest thing to [you]"?
PeterPunksNip@reddit
Women don't have to conform to the old lady stereotype and men to the old gentleman. My mom kept her tastes and demeanor all her life, she looked 20 years younger than her age, was stunning and funny, she was exactly like the Fran Fine character in "the Nanny". She thought me that society's expectations ain't worth nothing, and that "if you shrink yourself to meet others's expectations, they are not going to give you a medal".
prudent__sound@reddit
I'm about to see some college friends I haven't seen in a long time. And I caught myself thinking: "Will they think I look old? Will I actually look older than them? Look at my saggy eyelids. Well, at least a couple of them are bald like me now." And I'm a dude. I am not suppose to care about this stuff! And it's only online anonymity allowing me to even admit it at all.
1043b@reddit
Eh. Some people who had years on me never got older than me at 15, and still try to look and do behave the same way.
Others have always had it more together and seem more mature, but just haven't aged past 45 or so. I am and look older by a good 12 years.
Some people work really hard to look young and fit, some don't care
In general, people are weird
Key-Contest-2879@reddit (OP)
“In general, people are weird.”
You know my heart. 😂
PeterPunksNip@reddit
One definitive reason why you shouldn't care about what they are thinking. You do you, be happy, and don't listen to the old farts!
bagoTrekker@reddit
vanchica@reddit
I'm all wtf do you mean Daniel Craig was born in 1968?
Genny415@reddit
I dunno, I look around and see people my age and a whole lot of kids. Everyone looks like a kid now. How can this person be my doctor, he looks 12!?! OK, he actually looks about 20 to me. Still a kid.
SometimesUnkind@reddit
I don’t give a shit what people are wearing or how they act and speak. Not my life. Not my problem.
stuck_behind_a_truck@reddit
My husband and I will see an “older couple” now and then it hits us a moment later that they may actually be a younger couple. It’s not so much about how old or young people look; it really is that in our heads we can still picture how we were at an earlier age and we don’t reconcile the two.
Key-Contest-2879@reddit (OP)
Yeah, agreed. My wife still looks like the young woman I married when I look into her eyes. But when we’re walking together and I catch our reflection, I’m like “oh, an older couple.” Then I’m like, Damn! That’s us! 😂
disturbednadir@reddit
What got me the other day was when I saw someone who I knew from high school, and immediately thought 'dang, she got old.'
Then I remembered that we graduated together.
Holden-Mydong@reddit
I 100% agree. I see people and I am shocked at how old they look. I still stay active, play sports and keep myself young at heart
crofootn@reddit
Almost everyday. But then I realized that its not just getting gray, they also act and dress old. We just refuse to get old even though we're aging along with them.
earinsound@reddit
yes, happens sometimes. i’ll point out to my wife “that guy’s my age, but he looks so much older.” she just goes “really!? mm-hmm.”
MaximumJones@reddit
PepsiOfWrath@reddit
Me too. It’s a weird thing where in your head you still feel like the same idiot you were 20 or 30 years ago, but your body is older than your brain remembers sometimes. Then you look at someone and think they seem old, and it kind of hits you that you’re probably older than they are.
Even more weirdly, some of the people I thought were older when I was 20 and are actually older than me look great and I feel like I'm older then they are somehow.
Real_Occasion1691@reddit
Funny how that is.
