After almost 30 years i understand this now. Zoom helps a lot. 😱It's just full of small Fishes. You can see eyes and then some more. I always thought if I look in a certain way, I will see something big.🤡 But no its just small fishes. I was so stupid. 🤯
twistedtimelord12@reddit
I only was able to see the image a few times and usually I lost focus right after. The ones that were best were the early ones. Later ones didn't seem to work.
Lorrai@reddit
I couldn't either until finally a few years ago when I gave it another shot and my husband shared what worked for him. Trying to focus past the image like what you're really trying to see is on the other side.

As 3D pictures go, this is one of the worst ones I have ever seen. They say schooner or sailboat, but it’s very poorly done. I see the 3D, but can’t make out what it was supposed to be. I can’t say it’s NOT a boat, but 🤷♂️ I mostly see a few floating fish at the top. Sails? And the bottom is not solid enough for me to really say “boat”. I have always been able to tell what it’s supposed to be, but not this one. 😞
k3stl@reddit
I am experiencing same as you. I cannot see the schooner/sailboat others are reporting. I see the 3D aquarium, like I am looking down into a fish tank. I see 3D fish and some plants growing up toward my birds eye view. I stare long enough and I see some single shape starting to bulge from the background....but if igad to define that shape I would say it's a submarine, not a sailboat.

I couldn't do it the way they instructed, which was a bit woo-woo in its wording, but eventually found that I could do it much more easily by crossing my eyes until the two patterns overlapped correctly. The thing is that when you do it that way the 3d effect is reversed, with raised surfaces appearing as depressions.

Absolutely hate these. They've never worked for me, and I'm still convinced - to this day - that anyone who says they can see them are all in on a big conspiracy to make the rest of us feel like we're "left out" if the joke.
ElmarReddit@reddit
To practice, hold up your index finger and look at the wall behind it. It will appear twice. You can do the same with your other index finger. Now you see 4 copies. Bring your fingers closer together to see 3 copies. The one in the middle will look like a non transparent finger. Now, try to keep your fingers relatively close, but let your eyes do the merging to see 3 copies instead of 4. This is the principle of these images. Identify shapes that are similar in them and then overlay two neighboring shapes with your eyes.
The above image is not easy for a beginner though, as it has a lot of details. This one is great to start with: https://www.opticalillusionsportal.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Autostereogram-Example.png
Winter-Plankton-6361@reddit

That IS exactly what I suspected for years, until someone explained how to do it in a way that clicked with me. Word choice is important sometimes! The image above is kinda crummy, and it's harder to see them on a computer screen than on printed paper. The uploaded image may be the wrong size or resolution or aspect ratio or something else. I've come across a few that are still impossible for me.

No_Language_4649@reddit
Holy smokes I forgot all about these! If you put the image up to your nose and instead of focusing on it, you essentially look past it and slowly move the image away without changing your focus and you may be able to see it. Takes a minute to figure it out, but then once you do it’s pretty easy to see. Super cool when you see it!
Oldalgebra@reddit
OH my gosh! That worked for me. I've never been able to "see" one before. Thanks.

Anyway, once I figured out how to do these the first time, it's really easy. All you have to do is, instead of your two eyeballs pointing inward, as in converging, you have to essentially diverge your two eyes so that both your left and right eye aren't looking at one specific spot. After a while, the 3D image will become obvious
anti-ayn@reddit

Ancient-Eye3022@reddit
I always see them inverted. Annoys me.
UncommercializedKat@reddit
So I first saw them inverted because it was easier to cross my eyes toward my nose which gives an inverted image. Seeing it properly is more difficult to do but if you can do the inverted then you're most of the way there because you at least know what's supposed to be happening. When you cross your eyes to see an inverted image, you're focusing on a point closer than the screen actually is. To see the 3D image properly, you want your focal point to be behind the screen. One way to do this is to look at a distant object and then bring your phone in the front of your face. As you gradually focus from far away to the screen you can get your eyes to "lock" onto the image before you're focused at the screen's depth. You can move your face/device closer and farther away to help you get it.

My wife can't see these either. She has a lazy eye that never got fixed, so she doesn't have depth perception. Which means she can never see them.
I got a book from a greetings years ago and figured it out for me. I hope them close to my face, state through them, then slowly move it away from my face while concentrating on not refocusing my eyes.
MadJamJar@reddit
Weirdly i was able to do this before they were even a thing. When i was about 7 or 8 years old(im 55 now), cars used to have this headliner that was full of thousands of tiny holes. I would lay on the back seat and stare at it and then it would pop out and you could put your hand through it, was really weird but it made it simple for me to do these magic eye pictures.
damndatassdoh@reddit
I would do a somewhat similar thing.. squinting at a light, while letting my focus drift to the foreground, I could see "floaters" in the fluid in my eyes.. microscopic bits of this and that.. bacteria, etc. Still easy to do. Never hear anyone mention this.
Western-Corner-431@reddit
I’ve said this to my eye doctor. She doesn’t get it. She keeps saying,”Yes, floaters” but that is not what I am seeing. I see organisms
damndatassdoh@reddit
Yep. Looks exactly like what you see under a microscope. Tiny bits of fibers.. worm-like microbes.. skin cells.. all the crap your eyes collect.
Western-Corner-431@reddit
I see cocci, organisms with flagella and hair like structures. Tons of them. First noticed it as a kid in school when we had to put our heads down on our desks and I was looking at my friend from the side. I noticed if I looked up or down to the side and stressed my eyes to blur, there they were. I’ve never heard anyone say they could see it too. Everyone says it’s just floaters, but that’s not what it is.
damndatassdoh@reddit
It’s definitely microscopic flotsam on the surface of the eye.. clearly defined structures like you say, slowly moving in the fluid.. I posted a link here somewhere that has a pretty good explanation..
Cool to hear that you’re seeing what I’m seeing. Of interest, I’m an artist, and super keyed into detail..

IcyBodybuilder9004@reddit
I either have a dumb brain or limp eye muscles. I don’t know if I should’ve glad or sad about your comment. Do you have a source for that info? I would really like to understand why I never see the object. I do have very corrected vision with contacts
torrso@reddit
You need to learn how to focus "wrong", to a distance behind or front of the actual surfaoe where the picture is.
There are two types of these pictures: cross-eyed and parallel view. Both can be viewed with either technique but instead of a 3D obect coming out at you, you see a hole going away from you if you use the wrong one.
Cross-eyed ones are often easier for many people, you just cross your eyes so that you "see double". When those double images align right, your brain interprets small difrerences in the image as different distances.
This is how seeing depth works. One eye sees a slightly different picture than the other because they're apart on your face.
if you have good control of your eye muscles so that you can adjust if your eyes are looking close or far (crossing or separating) without caring if what you see is in focus or not, you can see the stereograms as 3D.
There are techniques how to practice or make it easier, for exarmple by holding te picture in front os your eyes and moving it further or closer your face without trying to focus on the picture, just staring into nothingness.
Once it clicks, your eyes will quite easily keep it right even if the picture moves.

Jerware@reddit
I'm weird and can get these immediately. I used to stare through fences when I was a kid and make the pattern line up and I enjoyed the holographic effect.
This one is really good. Usually it's just a random noise pattern with 3D shapes, but this uses the repeating texture to align with shapes. The background sea floor has discernable coral, several of the fish are correctly textured, and the bubbly ocean water surface is a smooth layer on top of everything. Props to the artist.
PushTheButton_FranK@reddit
Same, I used to "shift" the repeating pattern of the wallpaper at my grandparents' house with my eyes, years before those Magic Eye posters because popular
Catrina_woman@reddit
I have stereo blindness so I never could see these or 3d
fertile_gnome@reddit
There's a very limited period of time in early childhood where this stereo depth perception develops. Less than a year. If it doesn't develop then, it never does.
The good news is that this is only one limited aspect of depth perception. Parallax motion, color saturation, and relative size are all much more useful for determining distance, and they aren't as developmentally sensitive.

I don't think crossed eyed is exactly correct, more like unfocused sorta looking thru it. You have to relax your eyes. If you are making an effort to cross your eyes, you won't be relaxed enough.
Life-Willingness3749@reddit
Idk, that's all I have to do. You don't have to make your eyes cross completely, just a little bit. I see these images as soon as I look at them, I don't have to relax or anything. Just figured it's that easy for everyone.
h3rs3lf_atl@reddit
I havent seen one of these in ages! I managed to pull the 3D image quickly.
Sad-Signature-5491@reddit
This is a pretty good one, once I got in there! Took a minute to get adjusted to being under water 💦

kimcant@reddit
I used to be able to do this. Not anymore apparently
strangebru@reddit
Cross your eyes and then try to refocus, you'll see some sort of 3D effect. I can't tell what the 3D picture is supposed to be, but I am getting the 3D effect.
BigEstablishment4787@reddit
Crossing your eyes produces the opposite effect and makes the 3D items that are supposed to pop out push further back... But it def helps get you used to the weird sensation you feel in your eyes once all the overlapping images align.
phosix@reddit
This one requires unfocusing your eyes. If you cross them the image depth will appear inverted (near elements will appear far, far elements will appear near).
The pattern lines up with the shapes.
Smallmyfunger@reddit
I remember showing one of these (shark by sunken ship) to my mom & her parents. Mom & gpa couldn't get it & were suspicious it was a joke. My gma literally gasped & jumped back in shock when she zoned in & saw the pic-within. Then she kept visually exploring the pic & giggling with joy like a little girl. My favorite memory of her.
brezhnervouz@reddit
Awww that's very sweet! Glad that you have that lovely memory of her 🙏
brezhnervouz@reddit
I got say, once you learn how you can never 'unsee' them again 🤷♂️
Its a weird sensation though; you have to unfocus your eyes to see them, but once you do your focus seems insanely concentrated lol
ErasmosOrolo@reddit
When I was 16 I was getting paid 6.75$ an hour working at a library. Most of my time was spent reading far side comics, sports illustrated swimsuit editions and mastering the art of the Magic Eye. I was not the best employee.
swords_again@reddit
Just for fun I asked ChatGPT to create an autostereogram, and it failed miserably. But hey, at least you can see this one. If you've never truly "seen" an autostereogram cuz you can't get your eyes to focus, well this is kind of what they look like.
pistafox@reddit
My first. I’ll never forget it.
amauryt@reddit
There's actually two hamsters when you manage to cross focus this image ;)
swords_again@reddit
Oh, I see it! Thanks! hehehe
Sharon_Erclam@reddit
Thanks for that! I could never see those damn things.
pistafox@reddit
I never once “saw” one, either. Word was that astigmatism made them difficult if not impossible, and I’ve been wearing corrective lenses for bilateral astigmatism since these were a thing.
rotorcaps@reddit
Focus on the reflection of yourself in the screen. Then switch to the image. Works every time. They used to say focus on the glass in the picture frame.
Intelligent-Injury54@reddit
Holy shit you guys. I’m stoned and I swear, I saw this in 3-d. I think im just so high strung normally, i never give my eyes long enough to relax into it. Spoiler alert - it’s an aquarium.
Snackataurus3@reddit
I couldn’t either. And at the height of their popularity, I worked at a store that sold these. All day I would stare at them, never to see what others saw.

redindiaink@reddit
It took awhile for me to see them too. The best instructions I got were to put your nose up to the image and stare through it as you slowly pull away from the image. You have to continue to look through/past to let your brain find the second pattern.
vacationbeard@reddit
I remember they sold framed prints of these at the mall. Did people really hang these on their walls? Does anyone still have one hanging on their wall?

I couldn’t get them to work until the engineering student union at my college superimposed one over a mirror. I could train myself on where to focus, and once I pulled it off a single time I better understood what the effect was supposed to be. (Though with my lack of practice and my progressive lenses I can’t really do it anymore.)

Elnordon1@reddit
Everyone says relax your eyes but I’ve always just crossed mine until the patterns overlap. Also a great way to solve the “spot the difference” puzzles
_kingdap_@reddit
The thing with crossing them though is that you may get a sort of "opposite" result as in, what should pop out is sunken in, and vice versa. It depends on how the stereogram was designed. Some are designed for crossing your eyes, some for "relaxing" them. Also, if you overlap too much or not enough you'll see like a double image.
Pwnedzored@reddit
This is seriously the easiest way. On top of that, everything stays in focus this way too.
BurroSabio1@reddit

Empress_Clementine@reddit
I worked in a frame shop in the 90s. We had those stupid things all over the place. I tried staring past/through them, unfocusing my eyes, concentrating on the glass reflection, all the things people said to do. My conclusion? They were all collectively messing with me, those are nothing but a bunch of random dots.
witchofpain@reddit
I used to be able to see them so easily. But now? Nothing. Can reading glasses affect your ability to see them?
Confident_Low_4554@reddit

My hack for these is to focus on something sorta far away like a picture on the wall. Then i put my phone in my line of sight at arms length without changng my eye position ,and slowly move the phone toward my face until something kinda pops out of the picture. Then i try to adjust my focus, again, without moving my eyes. Voila! Fishies.

I am still convinced everyone claiming to see anything in these pictures are lying
External-Attempt-893@reddit
Try putting your face so close to the screan that your nose touches the middle of the picture and slowly back away without blinking. This one here is a bit hard to see - focus of the upper half there are some fish

Inverted is the way my eyes naturally want to see these. I can do it the other way, it just takes more effort.

Late_Conversations@reddit
I could never see those magic eye things either as a kid. As an adult I tried again and now can do it. Hold your face super close to the picture and lock into a specific spot. Just keep staring at the spot for several seconds until the image starts to get out of focus. Slowly move your face away from the picture without blinking. The 3D image will start to show then you can shift you focus away from the spot and enjoy the entire picture until you blink.
Proud_Aspect4452@reddit
I still can’t 😞
Late_Conversations@reddit
Awwz...the tricky part for me is the staring contest. So when your are staring at the one spot, you should see a distortion happen. For me, the image gets all blurry in my peripheral field of vision and the spot I am staring at jumps..it looks like it duplicates. Once this distortion happens, it could cause you to refocus but this instinct to "correct" your vision makes the magic disappear. You have to resist the urge to blink or refocus. Let it get all distorted and do weird things and slowly move away from the picture (or maybe it is easier to remain still and move the picture away from you). The 3D image will start to form.
Sherriblue87@reddit
See, in the olden golden days of the 1960s, we could just indulge in a bit of alternate medicines and didn't use our eyes at all for the same result!! It was simply the mind!!!✌🏾🌈👌
auscadtravel@reddit
You have to let your eyes unfocus. It takes a minute but let them relax and go a bit blurry, then you'll see the shape.
OnceMostFavored@reddit
I don't think they work well or possibly at all if you're considered monocular. I never had central vision in one eye (just peripheral), and I can't swear I ever made one work.
Dapper-Ad-4300@reddit

Dapper-Ad-4300@reddit
Did some research, other than having good individual eyeball control seems like it means absolutely nothing lol
OnceMostFavored@reddit
I read that there's a set of vestigial muscles in our eye sockets made to rotate them on a front-to-back axis, and that some folks can voluntarily use them to get a few degrees of visible movement out of them. Sometimes I think I've found them but I always forget to work them out. You'd probably have to be close to catch someone doing it, but it sounds like a really neat/freaky trick.

Since I learned how to „see“ them, I think the hold it to you nose and slowly pull back is the worst instruction to have ever been given.
This doesn’t do anything.
You just have to unfocus the picture until the pattern overlaps and then slowly focus on the pattern.

smarmy1625@reddit
your eyes have a built in focus mechanism (whether it's genetic or conditioned I don't know)
normally if your eyes are parallel then your eyes expect to focus on something far away, and if they're crossed a bit then they expect the focus to be near.
so you have to consciously work to override this mechanism.
BlazinSkinDucks@reddit
Don't stare at it, stare through it. Unfocus your eyes and act as if you're trying to look past it as if there was a wall there.
This probably doesn't help, but it's the best way I can describe it.

ccoakley@reddit
This one is actually hard, OP. There are multiple objects (fish, seaweed), and you are looking through the surface of the water at them. The water surface makes it harder to find an edge to get the right focal length. It’s very cool, but not the easiest one to learn with. The easiest would probably be a sphere or cube with nothing else.

Yea. Took me a min to see wtf was going on in this one. Lots of random jumping fish and other things.

I was thinking about these visual thingies just this past week. The train station along my commute has a bathroom in which the floor is made of many tiny tiles. And I was thinking to myself it’s time for these things to come back, introduce them to a new generation lol.
Amterc182@reddit
I couldn't either - found out years later that my severe astigmatism keeps me from seeing it.
Sad-Yak6252@reddit

Binbin220@reddit
I have severe astigmatism , both eyes, took a while to get the hang of it( yrs ago). Had both eyes done, cataract surgery 6 yrs ago, and can still see them ok. gt0163c@reddit
I have a pretty significant astigmatism, but I also don’t have a dominant eye. I think the lack of dominant eye is what helps make it easier for me to see these. SushiJuice@reddit
I used to be able to see these, but ever since I developed cataracts and got them removed and got implants to where each eye sees different distances (one eye sees near sight, the other sees far sight), I cannot see these anymore (my far sighted eye can't see the detail up close). It's not that crazy amazing. I'll explain what they look like:
Imagine looking at a flat wall of various patterned colors. As you kinda cross your eyes and then relax them, the patterns on the wall overlap slightly and your brain starts to figure out slight variations in the patterns. What was once just a flat wall suddenly has shadows and parts of the wall seems to fall deeper due to those shadows. So now, that wall of patterned colors is now like a cut out of some design, but with the same, overall pattern of color. It's fun the first couple times, but the effect is pretty basic. The cut out is still colored haphazardly. I can see why these fell out of popularity; over time the effect of seeing a cut out from an ugly wall just doesn't hold that much value. You also can get kinda dizzy from the experience if you stare at it long enough. Your brain isn't meant to hold that much focus for very long.
I hope that made sense.
matteothehun@reddit
Cross your eyes until the repeating pattern goes over itself.
srlong64@reddit
This is the opposite of what you need to do. There are magic eye images that are designed to be viewed cross eyed, but most of them, including this one, are made to be seen by focusing past the image. If you try to view this one by crossing your eyes you’ll get an inverted version, with everything that’s supposed to pop out instead looking sunk in
matteothehun@reddit
I just viewed the fish in this image by using the technique that I described.
srlong64@reddit
If you’re seeing the fish then you are doing what I said. This is not a crossview stereogram, it’s not designed to be viewed cross eyed. You are focusing past the image, whatever you may think you’re actually doing. I’ve checked both ways of viewing the image and it’s inverted when I view it cross eyed
roskybosky@reddit

uhsiv@reddit
I can still see them just fine, but now I have to put on my readers first
TheVanderspankXP@reddit
If you have certain vision problems you won't be able to see them. I have amblyopia: the vision in my left eye is much weaker than in my right eye. The result of this is my ability to perceive depth and 3 dimensional space is not as good as most people. I will never be able to see the hidden pictures in these photos.
On the flipside, my ability to translate 3 dimensional space into a 2 dimensional format is much better than most people's, likely because of my visual impairment. I am therefore exceptionally gifted at drawing and painting. It is theorized that many of the great painters in history likely had similar visual impairment.
hackinandcoffin@reddit
This specific one isn't great some barely definable fish IMO.
ConfusedWizard@reddit
I could never do these for YEARS!! Until I learned the trick to those find the difference puzzles. Where you have to almost identical pictures next to each other and you're trying all the changes between the two. The trick was to cross your eyes so that way the two pictures completely overlap. At one point it will feel like you're looking at a single picture and your eyes will be able to relax and still keep that picture. As you look at it, you'll notice that there are these fuzzy /flickering/out of focus spots. Those are the spots where the two pictures are not identical. After doing that a few times, I found that using a similar process these autostereograms would FINALLY start working for me. I think its harder for some people to start with these because there is no fully defined picture for people to aim for when they cross/relax their eyes, unlike in those find the difference pictures.
Ok_Pitch5865@reddit
This one isn’t too exciting. Just a few fish swimming around. I had forgotten how to do these and had to “retrain” my eyes how to do it. I just let my vision go blurry like I’m going cross-eyed but without meaning to. Then I kind of let the picture go in and out of focus, looking at the middle. After several seconds the hidden image sort of “pops out”, and my eyes focus on that.
PerceptionOk3196@reddit
Oh my! I forgot how much these actually just piss me off! I can’t see shit and never have. lol

It's easy to see inward stereograms. Just cross your eyes and adjust until two adjacent patterns overlap. But most of these are designed for walleyed people. And I have no idea how to make my eyeballs diverge.

mylocker15@reddit
An early 90’s psy-op. Am I using that correctly? Pitut there by advil because you get a headache trying to look at them.
There is no sailboat or horse and there never was. Just an experiment to see who would crack first when standing in front of the mall poster store by saying oh I see it it’s a horse or sailboat. Those were the 2 subliminal massages embedded into the mall muzak.
They want to see how creative people would get with their lies when questioned. Just cross your eyes and uncross them. Turn your head slightly and squint. Did you cross and uncross your eyes? Just focus try crossing and uncrossing your eyes a little… Like that’s gonna work when there is nothing to see.
Kidding sort of. I have never anything except a line that I said was a horse that one time in 1993 because I was getting a headache from staring at a poster. And yes I did cross and uncross my eyes.

I can, but it never, ever, EVER got “easy.” Each one I’d look at would take several minutes of frustration before the admittedly cool aha! moment.
I remember looking at one in the late ‘90s and just deciding I was done. It’s a cool effect, but not THAT cool. Collectively, the amount of cool images I’ve enjoyed is dwarfed by the amount of frustration I’ve experienced trying to “see” those images. I decided then and there not to waste another moment on these stupid posters.

papagena02@reddit
It’s not finding an image in the pattern. Often the image looks like it’s wallpapered in whatever the pattern is. It’s about unfocusing until your brain finds what looks like a 3-d object and the focusing in that. Once you get it, see it, you can even sort of relax your eyes and “look around” at the 3-d object.

Happy_Veggie@reddit
I used to be able to see them in a blink of an eye when I was younger but it takes a bit longer now.
My left eye is not so great at synchro focusing and sometimes I just see a bunch of 3D things untill my brain finaly says oh look these are fish. The 3D fish are not so sharp and there are other floating spots on like a 2nd 3D tier. Dunno if that makes sense to any body else.
Tapingdrywallsucks@reddit
I can only see them in reverse - I can see the image in 3D relief, but it's inside out, so it loses some of the "coolness" of the effect. There's a magic eye subreddit with advice on how to correct this, but I still can't do it. For folks like me, Parallel View and Cross View is a less-headachy alternative for awesome illusions.
jjyourg@reddit
Oh wow, I had no idea I was seeing them in reverse. Tried a different technique and it is so much cooler. Did the hold it to your nose and unfocus your eyes. Then move the phone away and at one point your eyes try to focus and it’s there.
mix_trixi@reddit
I couldn't until recently. My roommate in the early 90s had one that I would stare at forever and never saw. One night I was at a house party and they had one in their kitchen. I had taken some LSD and I saw it almost right away. It was a chemist working in a lab. I could see all the details: the objects on the table, the chemist in a lab coat, a window behind him with a bird sitting on the sill, it was amazing! After that, nope. Nothing. I still never saw what was on my roommate's picture.
Just a couple of year ago, one popped up on my feed and I finally saw it again. The trick I found is to find one spot in the middle to stare at, hold it close to your eyes then slowly pull it away from you while maintaining focus on that same spot. The key is, do not give up and do not look away from the spot. It may take a while but eventually, you'll start to see some sort of depth, then it slowly becomes more clear. This one was wild. I saw it almost immediately.

I spent a whole Christmas Day one year trying to see these in a book we bought my dad. Everyone else could see them, so I was persistent. This is complete conjecture, but I SWEAR my eyes went on the decline after that! I had always had eagle-eyed vision up to that point. Very shortly after that Christmas, I developed headaches and had my eyes checked and I was shocked at how bad my vision had become. I was only 23, so 🤷🏻♀️. But I always joke that my eyes were too strong to see the picture, but once I relaxed them, it made me sight-deficient. 🤣

That’s a reference to the movie Mallrats, a GenX classic. That’s the joke, most people can’t see the poster so they say it’s a sailboat even though it’s not.

mclark9@reddit
You have to look through the image, and focus on a spot behind it. You’ll see colored fish floating above a colored ‘sea floor’ and below the water surface that’s kind of shimmering with white spots.

Little multicolored fish, all kind of slanting downwards.

You don’t really unfocus, cross your eyes so you have double vision then let parts of the repeating pattern come together from doubled vision. You actually need to focus beyond the image.
iatecurryatlunch@reddit
Unfocus your eyes. As though you're looking to infinity distance. Let your eyes blur then the image will reveal the layers

Doit2it42@reddit
Those hit in 1993. The only reason I know that is I was on vacation in Hawaii. I finally, after a month or so of trying, saw the effect with one in a mall store display. Also saw Jurassic Park that same week.
monty08@reddit
they went crazy insane, were in office buildings, the mall, movie theatres, library, TV shows ...

Yes, they were EVERYWHERE! Which made it even more frustrating to not be able to see it. Arrgh. I remember anytime I saw one, I'd stop and stare for a minute. Thinking, "This will be the one I can see." When it finally happens I could see them all. It's weird.

Lucy_Lastic@reddit
So, anyone who says “it’s easy” doesn’t have vision issues.
I couldn’t do them for the life of me, no matter how much staring I did.
Until! I’m older, finally have reading glasses, try it just to see if it’s still impossible and now it’s not! I suspect my mixed-up eyesight (apparently short sighted in one eye and long sighted in the other) was preventing the focus from being just right. I still can’t do it without my glasses, but it was like a miracle to finally see what all the fuss was about all those years ago lol

Take a look at this guy. Calling autostereograms stupid because he can't follow basic instructions and learn how to view them. Back in the day, we were laughing at people like you.
Also, can't do something, so your reaction is to hate? Skill issue, get good. Negative aura detected.
Doridar@reddit
A good amount of people will not see anything even by following instructions. People with astigmatism and myopia, strabismus etc. That's up to 10 to 20%.

Yeah, tried that skill for decades, these don't function with my brain. Not a talent thing, not a lack of artistic ability or imagination. If it took from me my originality and made me like you it'd be a substantial net loss.
"Back in the day, we were laughing at people like you" and "can't do something, so your reaction is to hate?" You seriously said both of those things in the same sentence? Hypocritical peckerbreathed jackwad. I hope your mom fucked your bully and got pregnant so she had a kid she could be proud of.

Conscious_Amoeba4345@reddit
Anyone else used to do 'the flying sausage' where youd hold your index finger tips togeter and look beyond them to make a levitating finger sausage?
After getting the stereogram effect, I was amused at the instructions. They're universally bad... If you played with your vision as a kid it was easy... if you never have, 'stare past the picture' od 'diverge your focus' mean nothing.
canteloupy@reddit
Did that with my thighs to make a fake floating penis
dustofstarzzz@reddit
I feel like it's not just taking your eyes out of focus, it's also crossing them just the tiniest, slightest bit and letting your concentration go a little to one eye more than the other. Just keep jiggling it around in that situation until you start to see the layers.
MaddyKet@reddit
It also can help to hold it really close to your face and slowly move it back.

Step-On-Me-UwU@reddit
Hold your finger infront of you and move your focus between your finger and a wall far away, but pay attention to your fingers double vision split.
Now hold your finger right against a wall and try to split your finger the same way.
Now pick an aspect of the picture and split it so it lines up with the repeating pattern, eventually that will "lock in" and you can look around the picture without losing it
Step-On-Me-UwU@reddit
https://piellardj.github.io/stereogram-solver/
This lets you take a double vision copy of the image, overlay it and slide it around, this image is a pretty bad stereogram imo, theres a few fish near the top but nonsense at the bottom

It's not about focus, it's about convergence. Don't look *at* the image, look *through* it, as if you were staring at something on the other side of the glass.
L1V1NGD3ADBOI@reddit
Me neither, too much lsd as a teen so just as this makes sense my brain starts to make up stuff.
Is this a dog maybe? 🤔
green_miracles@reddit
No, the image is like a fish tank. There’s a bunch of fish, of different types, that pop out. And theres a glass-looking cover over it all.
mersolei@reddit
I’m so uncool. I looked for a schooner three times before recognizing the reference. Apologies to my entire generation. Facking memory loss!
pjrwales@reddit
Here is what works for me.
Having had laser surgery on one eye a couple of decades ago seeing them can be challenging for me.
I start with iPad close to nose (so out of focus) and then gradually move it further away trying not to focus either eye on the surface as I do so.
Most of the time the image comes into focus for me. Something takes a few attempts.
Braindead_Crow@reddit
Wow I just did it and it works amazingly well!
look at it center mass close up, cross your eyes, unfocus and look past it. With some adjusting it kinda just clicks. It needs a distance of between 6-12 inches to work otherwise it's too close to focus on or too far to have enough of the photo overlap while staring at it.
VanillaRadonNukaCola@reddit
And sometimes you can kind of almost catch it, like two magnets connecting together, but then lose it immediately.
Repeating the motion can eventually get it to snap together.
Turksarama@reddit
One of the common problems is that people are told to go "cross eyed" to see them. It's actually the reverse though, you need to go "wall eyed". Stare into the distance and let your eyes fully relax.
VanillaRadonNukaCola@reddit
I learned the far focal point pop out way recently and had always seen them in the reverse, cross eyed, sunken in way.
This one is definitely best in the far focal, but I've seen some that are easier to recognize the close cross eyed way
methos3@reddit
Yeah when I do it the cross eyed way, I see the reverse of the image (a hill looks like a depression).
Rahshoe@reddit
Couldn't see it then, can't see it now 😢
Justifiably_Bad_Take@reddit
I only picked it up in 30s
The trick is you sort of have to actively NOT be trying to see anything, because you need your eyes to no be trying to focus on something for them to see it
AveryRedlance@reddit
I've never been able to see them either, even as a teen. What I learned is that the vision in both of your eyes has to be the same. The vision in my right eye is much better than the left, so they don't work together the way they need to in order to see the 3D image.
autochthonous@reddit
My eyes have very different vision and I can see it just fine.
methos3@reddit

Hey! A schooner!
juggilinjnuggala@reddit
When you can see them, is the image supposed to be inverted or exverted? I can see something is there but it's like looking at the inside of a cake pan if that makes any sense.
Acrobatic-League7474@reddit
I can see either depending on what I do with my eyes. If I cross them it’s indented, but if I let them focus as if I’m looking at something just behind my phone then it resolves into the fish popping out.
Haskie@reddit
The fish should appear closer to you, if it's the opposite, you're probably crossing your eyes together. You should be looking 'through' the image. Try to make your eyes focus as if you are trying to see a wall or something on the far side of your phone/monitor.
notmydepartment@reddit
For me, the image becomes 3D and the new shapes are indented into the picture. I have no idea what this particular thing is supposed to be. It looks like a bunch of lightning bolts all together.

LazyOldCat@reddit
Likely wrong as I have wicked stig and learned to see these. Huge part is relaxing against the screaming of your dumb stig brain to focus your eyes. Then not only can you see it, but pick your iPad up and see around it at different angles. Trippy as heck!
Expert-Upstairs-4502@reddit
I had perfect eyesight as a kid, and I could always do these then, astigmatism in both eyes decades later now and I can still do these just fine
Junie_Wiloh@reddit
I can see them and I have astigmatism in both eyes, as well. It sometimes takes me a moment, but I can see them. This one was harder than normal, but it is nearing midnight and I have been up since 6:19am, when my bladder rudely woke me up. So my eyes are tired
home-plates@reddit
Not true, I have terrible astigmatism and nearsightedness. I can see it!
Astronaut6735@reddit
I've always been able to see them for some reason. Usually within a minute the first time, and just seconds once I know the picture. Unfocusing your eyes is just to make it easier to change the angles that your eyes are looking. I'm doing the opposite of crossing my eyes. Just make small adjustments until double images you see line up right to make the picture look 3d.

u/lamMatthew1223 taught me how:
“Don't think of it as looking through the image. This never helped me learn either. The only tip that helped me was this: Step 1 - Hold your phone about 20cm away from your face. Having your phone in landscape mode will make this work easier. Step 2 - Stare at the waterline of the image, where the water meets the land, and unfocus your eyes. When unfocused, your whole vision should be blurry. Step 3 - Slowly start to refocus your eyes. This needs to be done slowly, as the focus point for this to work is narrow. Keep repeating. The image should shift into 3D. Sometimes, you can feel your eyes wanting to focus on something that doesn't exist. This is the point behind the image that will create the 3D effect, but this might not be noticeable first time round. Just keep repeating Step 3 until the image turns 3D.”

star0forion@reddit
Loved seeing these things at the mall.
pm_nachos_n_tacos@reddit
I've always been able to do this thing with my eyes where I slightly "flex" some eye muscle and it makes my vision go double. The double images float further apart the harder I flex. So to look at these puzzles, I just look at one "blob" and flex until the copy floats over the top of the same blob next to it and the picture instantly snaps into focus for as long as I hold the flexing. Takes about another second to fully intepret what I'm seeing, look around the picture, and by then I have to let go of the flex and it all goes back to normal.
For anyone who can't see these, it's all in the same color and random pattern as you see, just different shapes pop out. Imagine if you had a shape of a fish and pushed it into the picture from the back, so a fish shape emerges but the colors don't change or anything. Like those pin boxes you push your hand or face into to make the shape. Except it's also 3D like you can tell there's empty space behind the shape too. Very cool stuff.

The words are slightly spaced differently and when you change your focal point to look "passed" the surface of the screen it your eyes focus on the same words and gives you the illusion of depth. Same with the picture Magic Eyes.... the images are spaced just so when your eyes focus at a specific focal point, both eyes converge two similar images but gives it an illusion of viewing it from two different angles (stereoscopic view).
Just like how the old school red and blue paper shades worked.

irving47@reddit
Unfocusing your eyes is the wrong strategy. You need to gently cross them until two of the images next to each other line up and rest on each other. Might need to put your finger an inch in front of the image. the image behind it, if you're focussed on your finger, will go double and you can get a lock on the two "objects" that are now one. Just hold that lock and slowly scan the image with peripheral vision.
Unicorn_Sparkle_Butt@reddit
Yep, cross your eyes until you overlay one way.
Background_Tax4626@reddit
If you knew Timothy Leary you'd be able to. j/s. ✌️
Snobpdx@reddit
I do it by touching my nose to the center of the image, stare at the tip of my nose, then slowly move the image away and back towards me (or move away and get closer if it's fixed/large).
Do that a few times focusing on the tip of your nose and the fish will start to stand out and your brain will lock on.

Look at the orange things at the bottom. Let yourself go cross eyed until two of them come together as one. Then keep focusing on the (now one) orange thing and try to see it really well. Then the whole thing will come into focus.
Alternatively look at something several feet away and then bring the image into your line of sight keeping your eyes the same distant focus. Try it several times using objects of focus closer and further away while each time you put the image (probably your phone) into your line of sight.
That’s a cool one! It moves well when you tilt the phone around.

amroth62@reddit

Dry_Winner_6473@reddit
Imagine that the mess you are looking at is a forest. Focus your eyes at the end of the forest, past the mess. The image is up against that end. It is a solid image past the trees. It's there. Not here. Over there.
Dry_Winner_6473@reddit
And don't stare at one spot. Look around in the distance, different parts of the forest, in the distance.
ElliotNess@reddit
It's not just about letting your eyes go out of focus.
Once they go out of focus, you'll see parts of the image blur together. The truck is go "re-focus" onto this blur, as if it were an object further away. Re-focus is the key.
mostlycatsandquilts@reddit
This is a perfect explanation
Boneyard45@reddit

SteelerNation587543@reddit
Very gently, just slightly cross your eyes until you see three images. If you go too far and there are four images or the middle two overlap, slightly uncross them until they line up and you have three perfectly lined up images. Then just focus on the one in the middle.
All you’re doing is manually adjusting your focus to a point an inch or two behind the picture such that each eye sees something different and your brain resolves the rest.
Once you see it you’ll never have trouble doing it again.

Like cross your eyes. Its like a Nintendo 3DS. You ever do the floating sausage finger trick? Its like that. 🤷🏽♂️
xamott@reddit
They are definitely NOT stupid. It’s stereoscopic vision and I can do it with any pattern that repeats horizontally. I can cross my eyes OR separate them, if I’m looking at a repeating pattern such as my bathroom floor. So back in ‘95 in college I was thinking every computer OS should be 3D, all it has to do is repeat things left to right. We don’t need 3D glasses.
davasaur@reddit
What does that even mean?
xamott@reddit
All you have to do to see the image in those patterns is cross your eyes. What’s weirder is if you can manage to separate them instead, this inverts the image.

Nah, dawg, I'm good.

I can generally do these very easily. This one is not a very good quality. It took me a while but, you end up with an aquarium scene. And a little bit blurry at that.
busybox42@reddit
I've found crossing your eyes a bit for a second helps the eyes "focus" or whatever. That said, I couldn't see this one and it just gave me a mild headache after a few minutes.
Upbeat_Ad_3968@reddit
I’ve always done these easily but this one on my phone is tough. I see some fish? But the bottom is a mess.
blackstarr1996@reddit
This one is difficult. Lots of small pieces. Too much like the 2d image.

If you stare long enough, and relax into a receptive state, and calmly concentrate, other senses will also activate, and you just make out a sound, quiet at first, but steadily building, familiar and beckoning ... 🎶"Never gonna give you up" 🎶

suddle@reddit
I can usually only do them if they are shiny and I can focus on one part of my reflection. I used to put them behind a piece of glass to make this work.
I found this one confusing. Even after it went 3D, I had trouble making out what they were. The fishies were too tiny for my old eyes.

Bunch of fish with a reef or shipwreck in the bottom right corner. Significantly harder on my phone screen. You need to relax your eyes till everything is out of focus and then slowly try to re-focus. Having the proper distance from the pic is helpful too. Sometimes bringing it close and slowly polling it away till you see it.
TheFonzDeLeon@reddit
I worked in a mall comic shop kiosk and the next kiosk over had these and apparently I got really good at it as it took me all of about 5 seconds to get it to work.... I haven't seen one of these in decades.
Buglepost@reddit
I can usually get the 3D effect but it’s hard to make out what the hell it’s supposed to be. Like I’ll see something, vaguely person-ish and be like “oh, some dude?” And it turns out it’s Shrek and I think, if you say so.
SexyStayPuft@reddit

thermal_envelope@reddit
I agree, this one is really cool! The patterns/colors on the fish are like real fish. A lot of times the colors and patterns have nothing to do with the shape you see.
RoguePlanet2@reddit
Is there an "after" image that shows what we're supposed to be seeing?!
GarionOrb@reddit
Get close to the image, unfocus your vision, and then slowly refocus. That's how I do it. The image will literally pop out. At first you'll see there's a 3D image there, then you can slowly focus to make it out. Then it'll be clear as day.
thermal_envelope@reddit
There should be! I don't think I've ever seen one though.

I could almost never do them as well, because one eye is dominant. I don't have very good depth perception because I don't have very good binocular vision. It's also why I sucked so much at ball sports in school, leading to the weekly ignominy & humiliation of being one of the last to be picked in PE.

This one isn't very good in my opinion. Just birds all over the place. I've seen better ones in the past.
lexi_prop@reddit
It's a bunch of fish. Thanks for giving me one of these to cross my eyes to. The trick is to focus on the reflection from the glass on your screen, then slowly looking back at the picture until the colors overlap and the 3d images pops out.

jmmath@reddit
You also can't do them if you're blind in one eye. I could see them no problem in the 90's. Now, no hope.
PhilosopherFun7288@reddit
it takes me like 10 seconds tops to see these. You just have to focus your eyes like you're looking at something behind the image... like look at the wall behind your monitor and then put this pic up without changing your vision to focus on it..... once it "clicks in" you can even move your eyes around the image to see the different layers and details
Cornelius-Q@reddit
They're easier to do if they're in a frame. You stand directly in front of it, and then focus your eyes on your reflection, and then they pop right out.

There is always a repeating pattern.
(1) Chose two objects in that repeating pattern at the center of the picture.
(2) Let your eyes unfocus so the image of those two objects start to move toward each other.
(3) Lock the images together so they seem to be one object.
(4) Keep that one object locked (don't move your eyes around)
(5) After a while, you should see what you are supposed to see around the periphery (but don't move your eyes from your locked image)
sparkling_sam@reddit
This whole puzzle picture thing was just a giant conspiracy IMO. It makes as much sense as any other conspiracy theory so I'm sticking to my beliefs.

I used to keep one of these framed on my office wall. People would come in and strain their eyes to see what it was. Finally they'd announce "it's a car!" shizoor@reddit
Took me ages to see them, I'd get angry as a kid when I couldn't. This one you're looking downwards into an aquarium full of fish, there are rocks beneath the fish and you can see some froth on the water's surface. Going slack eyed is the first step, you then need to go cross eyed a bit until one orange blob touches the other. Then you start seeing the image.

Didn't help that nobody gave a good explanation on how see the 3d image. The key is that you have to cross your eyes a litte while staying focused on the picture so that what your left eye sees overlaps a little with wath your right eye sees. NOBODY EVER BOTHER TO MENTION THAT YOU HAD TO CROSS YOUR EYES A LITTLE!!! l remember once seeing one of these with two small squares at the bottom. When crossed your eyes so that it look like their was three squares your vision should be aligned correctly to look up for the optical illusion to work.

The only time I ever got one was when I was coming down off of a heavy acid trip. I looked at it and immediately saw a teddy bear with a balloon. I looked away and looked back, but never saw it again.

Is that you Mr Pitt?!?
spargel_gesicht@reddit
It’s not unfocused, it’s deep focus!
PlatypusDependent271@reddit
Neither could I. I absolutely hate them.
MaximumJones@reddit
This one is easy. It is a thousand lost souls burning in the ninth level of hell with me right in the middle.
(Or maybe Catholic school just really fucked me up).
jk_pens@reddit
If I wear my glasses, I don’t really see it, but if I take my glasses off and relax my gaze almost any repeating pattern can become an autostereogram. Checked tablecloths make me dizzy.
Cool_Lingonberry_399@reddit
Exactly, me neither! Those things are broken!
zoombie_apocalypse@reddit
I never saw a damn thing.
Curious_Catlady1@reddit
Pretty diving fishies! Cool. My husband can’t do them at all.
tedfergeson@reddit
I lost the use of one eye around age 20. I always felt cheated by this
Msleadfoot@reddit
Omg me too! I thought I was the only one! My husband and I had a snoopy one in our first apartment and everyone could see it but me.
Tangboy50000@reddit
I always liked them and had no problem seeing them, but they don’t seem to work as well on screens. I have much better results with posters and books vs a tablet or phone screen.
missusscamper@reddit
I’ve never in my life been able to do this- just turned 50
Fuddle@reddit
It was explained to me that all you have to do is look at the picture while not looking at it. I don’t speak to that person anymore
toofarkt@reddit
I’m 52 and have never been able to see it either. For a while, I was convinced that everyone who could was lying.
Illustri-aus@reddit
For years I couldn't see any image no matter what I did.
Then my eyes deteriorated, and I found I could see the images!
But the deterioration continued, and now I can't see them again, sigh!
Ok_Explorer6128@reddit
Now I'm angry all over again about these...

"It's a boat!" (I see you 🤣)
IntergalacticTheorem@reddit
Look at it as if you're staring past your reflection in a window.
bobshammer@reddit
The best one was the B-2 bomber
90Carat@reddit
I can see them. I'd look through those books all night. High as fuck.
B_Williams_4010@reddit
I liked to pretend I could and then try to get people to second-guess what the picture they saw actually was.
IronicHipsterCake@reddit
You gotta just hold it at the right distance away from your eyes, don't relax them but cross your eyes to the middle of the picture while standing on your head, holding your breath, and squeeze your butt cheeks.
Majik_Sheff@reddit
I before 3000 sailboats and a schooner.
T_Noctambulist@reddit
Why both? A schooner is a sail boat stupid head!
TwoStoopidToFurryass@reddit
I never could either. Come to find out I had a lazy eye my entire life. Stupid lazy eye.
Finster4@reddit
Put it close to your face and very slowly move it away.
Princessferfs@reddit
I can do them and it’s fun. But I would never buy one to display in my home.
Green-Protection-600@reddit
A schooner is a sailboat stupid head. You know what? There is no Easter Bunny it's just a guy in a suit!
killslikeaninja@reddit
