Do you feel a bit weird to be playing video games at your age!
Posted by More_Law6245@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 971 comments
I was doing the "old guy" thing the other day and actually went into the store to buy a video game and this kid who was about 16 years old gave me the side eye when we were both looking at games.
For a very brief moment I thought to myself am I too old to be playing video games? Then I thought screw you, you little shit I would probably kick your ass. It did give me cause to pose for a moment to think but do think playing video games at our age is fine?
AngryOldGenXer@reddit
Keeps me out of trouble.
EquivalentStart2595@reddit
I had a piece of furniture delivered and the guys are very young. He spots my console and exclaimed, "YOU HAVE A PS5???"
Aeribous@reddit
Nope play every morning while drinking my coffee. In fact just finished.
gatorman98@reddit
Been gaming since Commodore 64.
Justdonedil@reddit
Should have asked what his favorite game is. Of course, I give mom vibes, so that might go over better from me. Seriously though, engage them in conversation.
Also, once again....we don't care what anyone else thinks. We live our life how we want to without approval or apology.
CommodoreGirlfriend@reddit
You guys are the original gamers
Twisted_Spinster@reddit
Hell no! Been a gamer for over 20 years, but on PC rather than console. I love it!
poopville_USA@reddit
There are worse things you could be doing.
TwoHugeCats@reddit
I’m sorry you had that strange encounter. Playing games at our age is absolutely fine!!! Not only is it fine, it’s our right. We’ve been playing videogames for decades, from the very beginning, and we made them what they are today. I don’t feel the slightest bit weird about my gaming. Let me bore you with details: I played Elder Scrolls Online so much yesterday that I barely had time for Crimson Desert, No Man’s Sky, the Silent Hill 2 Remake, and Powerwash Simulator 2. Also, cat collecting in Crimson Desert is highly addictive, as is Crimson Desert in general, and I’m very worried I’ll spend so much time on this game that I won’t get through the first two parts of the Final Fantasy VII remake which I swore I’d do before GTA 6 and the Ocarina of Time remake come out. Anyway, forget that kid and the way he looked at you. He knows nothing. Get off my lawn!!
jaeldi@reddit
No. There are no new lands to explore in the real world, no truly rewarding systems i have any real access to (except exercise and nutrition). In games I can explore lands no one but me gets to see, I adventure, I build, I make life and death decisions, I gather and consume fortunes and empires, I take dangerous risks, I feel satisfied.
theUnshowerdOne@reddit
My hands hurt so bad the next day after playing my Xbox because of my arthritis.
WhetherWitch@reddit
Try turmeric, it really helped, plus I remap my buttons so different digits get different workouts.
theUnshowerdOne@reddit
It's just keeping my hand in that griped position. I'm a carpenter, my right hand is just so conditioned to grip a hammer, saw, screwdriver, etc. it will just lock in place. Handy when I need to hold something for a long time but too long and it doesn't want to open.
But I'll try the Turmeric all the same, it's not the first time I've heard it mentioned.
AliVista_LilSista@reddit
Nope! I'll be gaming until I'm dead.
Beachbum74@reddit

Never too old to game. I might be too old for multi-player but I can play a single player. Good for your mind & reflexes too.
Cats-cats-kats@reddit
You’re never too old for multiplayer!
Ok_Traffic_3240@reddit
I dunno... feel like I'm edging ever closer to going single player only 🤣
SergeantChic@reddit
Heck no, I started with the Commodore Vic-20 and I’m still going. Teenagers will give you the side-eye regardless of what you do. Plus, video games have come a long way. They’ve got stories and characters you can care about. I wouldn’t want to lose that creativity in my life.
Cats-cats-kats@reddit
Gen X was the first generation with video games. We defined the industry.
RaceSlow7798@reddit
My mom (in her late 70s) discovered WoW 10 years ago and still plays 2 to 3 hours a day. She’s got a special gaming mouse with like 15 buttons for all her macros. Game hard!!
EastAd7676@reddit
I’m 60 and enjoy playing RDR2 and other games with my grandkids who are spread across the US.
Khajiit_crone@reddit
Exactly! This is how I get together with my adult children on a regular basis. So good to laugh and chat as a group while gaming!
Khajiit_crone@reddit
Hell no. Spending more time gaming when I retire is something I’m looking forward to! Gaming belongs to usas much as anyone; from the moment I set foot in that ‘70s arcade and played Breakout to PS5 today.
Bobeara31@reddit
Nope. Most adults I know watch tv and have no other hobbies. I’d rather game.

I’m 60 f and I love COD…. My reflexes are slower than they used to be, but I still enjoy it.

SadieSadieBoBady@reddit
Nah, games are for everyone… now when you start to suck at playing them, maybe time to revisit
AntonChekov1@reddit
Why would someone start to suck at them?
BonezOz@reddit
Cognitive decline
AntonChekov1@reddit
I guess it depends on what types of games. I play chill RPGs and more slow paced detective like games. I don't see me ever not being able to play those.
Greenfirelife27@reddit
I’m a millennial. It’s weird as hell when I hear people my age are doing that.
WhetherWitch@reddit
That’s so sad, I do feel like millennials really got the fuzzy end of the lollipop. I’ve never seen a more anxiously self-boxed in generation.
IllustriousRound99@reddit
Why?
Greenfirelife27@reddit
Why I appreciate that you are very likely asking a genuine question, I’m not looking to be attacked by all the Reddit Peter pans on here lol
justanothersnek@reddit
No, one of very few hobbies that doesnt cost too much damn money. Plus, we're the gen that created the video game market. I also bike, walk the trails, take pics with real camera, etc. So Im good.

Nope. I'm 47, husband is 53. We're counting down the days until the next gta6 delay
WhetherWitch@reddit
lol we’re doing that with Diablo 4 rn
sassyassy23@reddit

WhetherWitch@reddit
Heck no. When y’all are being miserable at holiday family dinners our family is blasting the heck out of zombies or getting sore thumbs from Mario Kart. Our kids friends used to be staggered that we actively play and can beat them at most games.
DKBeahn@reddit
Nope. I've been working in the video game industry for almost 30 years. Of COURSE I play video games.
Who does that kid think MAKES those games? Definitely not people his age.
RealPumpkin3199@reddit
No, it feels natural to me. Several games I play have boomers over 80! I'm a spring (summer of 69) chicken comparatively.
If a kid in a game store gave me the side eye, I would say something like, ooooh I bet your grandma would like that one you are looking at. I love it. Do you need help picking out an appropriate game?
Muahaha
Sudden_Fix_1144@reddit
lol….. no. I see your point though, a lot of people my age seem to think we should no longer be ‘wasting time’ doing this.
It’s a hobby. I exercise and surf. Think some people our age have some sort of screen time bullshit attitude.
coldnebo@reddit
everyone is “wasting time” at something
Ancient-Eye3022@reddit
My wife and I got together and we were super poor. But 30 dollars for Internet and 30 for 2x world of warcraft accounts got us through thousands of hours of fun. Skip ahead 20 years...some people spend thousands on boats and other things for entertainment, while we still love sitting on the couch playing video games together. I'll do it for another 20 and then some universe willing
godless_communism@reddit
I feel like I don't have infinite life ahead of me to be fucking around so much.
MrsQute@reddit
I'm a 51 year old woman and currently have a PS5 and a Switch. Between myself and the kids, I think we've owned every major console for the last 30 years.
I have no problems when people side-eye me when I mention this in conversation or when I'm picking up a physical copy of a game.
All 3 of my sons (now all adults) have enjoyed watching people's brains break when they tell them their mom plays video games.
Guess what my big plan is for later today after I take care of my chores!
Truckerlightning@reddit
We’ve been playing video games since before they were even a thought.
I remember begging for rolls of quarters for the arcade… then earning my own just to dump them into Galaxian, Pac-Man, and Mortal Kombat. Before that? Pong. Atari. That jungle game where the alligator always got me.
I remember the first Asteroids… that black screen, floating rocks, and that constant panic when you split one too many times. And Doom? I was there for that too... sitting at a computer playing that early version, completely hooked.
Years later, when the newer Doom came out, my adult son was so excited to play it… and I remember thinking, I’ve been here before. Same world, different generation.
We sat there talking about it, sharing that moment, and it felt like this full-circle connection that was just… incredibly awesome.
Then came Sega. Nintendo. PlayStation. And I never stopped.
Now I’ve got a PS5, VR, a full library, and a premium subscription. I play Diablo, Assassin’s Creed… even hop on Steam and game with my adult son.
I was playing D&D when it first came out with my late husband. Later, I even learned Magic: The Gathering just to connect with my kids.
And as a matter of fact, I’m still at it.
I’m replaying Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. I played Alexios the first time, and now I’m going back through as Kassandra. And yes… I’m the kind of person who does every single side quest. Why? Because that’s where the magic is.
So no… I don’t feel weird.
If anything, I think it’s weird to stop.
I feel lucky.
We’re at the age where we finally have the money and the freedom to enjoy the things we’ve loved all along. Why would I give that up?
Find your joy. Whatever it is. Keep it. Protect it.
I’ll be 57 this year… and I still get that same spark.
That’s the whole point. 🎮👍👌☺️😍😎
ExtremeJujoo@reddit
Omg I am also replaying AC Odyssey! As Alexios!!
And I am the weirdo who loves many of the AC games (Valhalla, Origins, Odyssey, Black Flag are my favorites, Mirage was feh), my sons tease me about my love for the AC games.
Witcher was a fun one as well.
I fell in love with Eldenring. Such a beautiful game
Truckerlightning@reddit
Yeah, I just can’t get into Mirage. I don’t even know why, it just refuses to grab me.
Which is wild, because I practically moved into Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, had a whole personality shift in Assassin’s Creed Origins with the pyramids, and somehow worked a second job in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
What’s funny is I keep going back to Mirage like “alright, this is the run”… and I don’t even make it past 30 minutes before my brain clocks out.
Meanwhile Odyssey’s sitting there like I owe it money and knows I’m coming back, ready with 50 side quests and zero judgment.
At this point Mirage isn’t even a backlog game… it’s a suggestion.
ExtremeJujoo@reddit
I did finish Mirage (once I start something, I have to complete it) and I kinda kept hoping it would get better…it didn’t. Very disappointing game.
Origins, Odyssey and Vahalla are gorgeous games, and just a treat to play
LonelyChell@reddit
I’m 47. I love the gaming connection I have with my kids. We all just played RE9 together.
Niblet1973@reddit
Never too old to play video games! It is my stress reliever after the work week.
NaturalSpecialist5@reddit
You're supposed to flip him off man. You're Gen X. We made those games. Who cares what they think.
kalelopaka@reddit
No, we started with the OG video games! Why shouldn’t we still enjoy them?
Ancient-Lie-1294@reddit
One is never too old to play. Over half of the 10 billion dollar toy industry is adults buying toys for adults. My mother-in-law played video games in her 80s. Mostly casual ones, but she did like Fate. She also loved watching hubby and me play Skyrim, any Assassin's Creed, Halo, or any game really. Play if you want!
PrikNamPlassum@reddit
I'm a 52yo veteran with 17 years as an engineer at a Fortune 100 company. I currently have a Nintendo Switch OLED, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, PS5 and a gaming laptop. I have both a 1080p, 120hz projector with a 12' screen and an 85" TCL QM8K TV that I can swap consoles out on depending on my mood.
I don't find it weird at all.
I also have a bunch of Snoopy plushies.

Hell yeah! Hope you got a Woodstock to keep the Snoopies company!
PrikNamPlassum@reddit
Definitely :)
skinnyorangecat@reddit
I had to stop probably 20 years ago due to life.. BUT I recently I retired and started playing a few again. It's wonderful!!
gingerjuniper77@reddit
Nope. We are the video game generation, plat proudly!
japhia_aurantia@reddit
Nah, games are great. I play with my kid sometimes too.
ibtryn2@reddit
I fell off long ago (Playstation 2), so now when I try to even discuss gaming, it is BEYOND weird.
Tk2dsky@reddit
Nope, it is my relax time. I will never stop playing.
itsmyvoice@reddit
Nah. Idgaf what anyone else thinks.
Jerry-Lives22@reddit
No way. It’s so much more amazing than when we were kids. Complexity, graphics and hear volume of choices—what’s not to like?
inertia-crepes@reddit
Nope, I don't feel weird at all. Gaming is a very valuable part of my stress management, and something I get to share with my kids.
Also, sometimes my teenager brings friends over when I'm playing Hello Kitty Island Adventure, and I get to inform them that I'm a leet gamer when they ask what I'm doing.
Middle age has been liberating as heck for me, I love it!
LadyNorbert@reddit
Not even a little bit. Actually, the primary demographic for casual games in some of my favorite genres (puzzle and hidden object) is GenX women!
KatJen76@reddit
Mystery Manor, amirite?
LadyNorbert@reddit
I haven't played that one, but I have hundreds of dollars' worth of casual games from Big Fish. I've actually found that playing hidden object games has improved my observation skills in real life.
KatJen76@reddit
I thought so too. Any recommendations? Mystery Manor is the only one I've played.
LadyNorbert@reddit
If you like hidden object, I recommend almost any of the series that were (until very recently) produced jointly by Big Fish and Elephant Games - Paranormal Files, Mystery Trackers, Haunted Hotel, Grim Tales, Detectives United. I also love the Dark Parables series from Blue Tea Games, which are fragmented object games rather than hidden object, and the Hero of the Kingdom series from Lonely Troops, which have tons and tons of little things to find in each part of the story.
Designer_End5408@reddit
No never. I still do as well.
Schulz70j@reddit
I do when I’m not really enjoying it. Then I feel like I should be doing something around the house. But when it’s a game I’m enjoying. No not one bits
mcgoran2005@reddit
There are programs that bring video games into elderly care facilities because it has been shown that playing games has many benefits.
I don’t plan to stop playing. If being a woman and playing online games didn’t get me to stop then my age sure as heck won’t.
I have a lot of things in my life I could choose to feel bad about (plastic use, food waste, my awful taste in clothing, the music I listen to…) why add to the pile?
achillea4@reddit
To be honest, I'm 60 and don't really get adults playing video games. I never grew up with them so never got into it. But if that's what you are into then who cares? Do what you enjoy.
HolyHandGrenade_92@reddit
absolutely not. it's healthy to have a couple computer games around. brutal doom is awesome
Wyndeward@reddit
Nope. Not in the least.
kategoad@reddit

Nope. We were brought up with them. I’d rather play a great single-player game than watch a movie these days. Way more entertaining for me.
JenLiv36@reddit
I turn 50 this year. I will game until I can’t anymore or the gaming industry gets to a place where we can’t own any aspect of our gaming. Which ever comes first.
As a female gamer who has been gaming my whole life and always dealt with a lot of discrimination as a gamer, the added agism doesn’t even make me blink.
Don’t take kids opinions personally. Kids these days are worse than ever when it comes to agism but we don’t have to take it in. Play your games, chances are you have been playing longer than they have been alive.

itgoesineasy@reddit
You do you. If it gives you joy go for it. As stated, Gen Xers don’t care what anyone thinks. Plus at our age most of us can easily afford new games. I don’t play but have friends that do.
Peetwilson@reddit
I mean... I know it's incredibly bad for me on a physical level.
East-Garden-4557@reddit
Why?
Peetwilson@reddit
Being sedate for long periods of time is is bad, Mmkay.
East-Garden-4557@reddit
People don't lose the ability to move once they own video games. Watching a movie on TV, watching sport, reading a book, all seated activities. Do you discourage them too?
So many people sit at desks all day at work, do you also discourage that?
Lots of people work active and stressful jobs, if they want to chill out and play games in their down time it isn't an issues. Video games are also good for keeping your mind active and have been shown to help with cognitive function in older people.
You seem to assume that the only one way a person can play video games is to never leave the couch again. But just like any other activity you have full control over how long you do it for.
Peetwilson@reddit
The question was "Do you feel a bit weird to be playing video games at your age"... I DO feel weird because it's makes me feel too sedate. I don't need a diatribe telling me how I'm supposed to feel about it.
Go play all the games you want. I'm not stopping you.
sh3llsh0ck3d@reddit
Nope.
Tandom@reddit
I had to put down my PS5 controller to type this. ROFL!
I grew up with gaming and I don’t plan to stop anytime soon. It’s therapy for me. Be it solving a puzzle of some kind (probably with my tongue sticking out of the corner of my mouth) or going full murder-hobo on a village because something at work got under my skin.

You shouldn’t feel weird at all. Plus, gaming slows dementia.
I’m currently playing Crimson Desert and, holy crap, this game is taking my life over. Best open world game ever. Blue Prince is also fantastic, if you’re interested in slowly devolving into insanity.
Truckerlightning@reddit
Crimson Desert? That one somehow flew under my radar.
Now I’m a little suspicious… because “best open world ever” is exactly how I end up ignoring the main quest and vanishing into side quests for 40 hours straight.
I’m also big on Horizon Zero Dawn, The Witcher, and Subnautica...basically anything where I can wander off, get distracted, and forget what I was originally supposed to be doing.
So yeah… you’ve definitely got my attention. I’m going to go look this up and probably make some questionable time-management decisions.
And “slowly devolving into insanity” might be the most accurate game review I’ve heard in a while 😂
Intelligent-Court295@reddit
Dude, you have to get this game. There are 5 large areas and I’ve spent over 60 hours in only one area. There’s so much content in this game that after having paid for it, I would gladly pay $200 for this game. There are so many systems in this game, and they all interact with each other. If you like open-world exploration, puzzles, amazing combat, this is the best and it’s not close. Better than Zelda, better than RDR2, and better than any GTA, for now.
If you’re a completionist like myself, it can be a bit overwhelming, but the game is gorgeous and it’s taking over my life. Please help!
Suedeskin@reddit
Not at all! Been playing since the 70’s and I’ll never stop! Not ever! People describe me as a gamer and I don’t give a crap what people make of that. Gaming in your older years staves off degenerative brain decline. Keep going! I’ll be going till the day I die!

You're spot on. It's our version of crosswords & puzzles. Whatever helps, right? 😂
I have PTSD; gaming equates to anxiety meds. I take less pills when I game. It's one of the only things that's actually enjoyable now.
Anxiety kills mental well-being in so many ways. Gaming helps me emotionally and cognitively. I'll never stop never stopping.

I e been playing video games since I was a little kid. On consoles, computers, weird hand held things, and in old school arcades with sticky floors and sketchy dudes with quarters on their hips. The only time I judge myself for playing games is when I am doing busy work in a game like destiny 2 or poe2 that I don't actually enjoy.
There is a difference between gaming to grind /maximize the character and gaming for enjoyment. One is chasing some form of progress even if it's in a video game and the other is done for entertia.
So as long as I am choosing to play something genuinely exciting I am fine with it. The moment it becomes compulsive and an activity to avoid real life problems then it has gone too far
LCesaille@reddit
I don’t feel weird about it at all. I dabbled in Atari and Nintendo when I was younger, when I could pry it away from my younger brothers, but didn’t truly start gaming until my 40s. I’m 54 now and have fully leaned into gaming, Lego, etc.

As a 59 year old woman yeah I do think men my age who spend most of their free time playing video games are boring and not very successful in life. That you have that much free time to sit and play makes me wonder what balls are you dropping in your life. Do you regularly hang out in person with friends? Exercise? Cook? Travel? Read? Go out to concerts? Woodworking? Cars? Hunting? Golf? Running? Business travel? Are you in a supportive relationship where you go do things with them? If you have kids are you going out and doing things with them? The only guys I know in my life who still play games regularly do not have a good life. They are divorced or single and struggle financially and are not in shape. Maybe there are unicorns out there that are guys who are successful accomplished men and who also spend all their free time gaming but I have never seen one.
ExtremeJujoo@reddit
My husband is a major gamer…he is also a CFO for a company, plays hockey, soccer, and provides a pretty amazing life for us. He is definitely not broke or boring or unsuccessful.
So yeah, perhaps he is an outlier, but I know a lot of gamers who have their shit together.
I would rather my husband de-stress after a busy/hard day gaming than going to the bar and drinking or something.
MaximusHomerdrive@reddit
As a 54 year old woman who loves gaming, you sound like my mom who I don't talk to very much, lol.
I've regularly played video games since pong came out and still play a couple hours a day. I wake up whenever I want, nap whenever I want, buy whatever I want, house is paid off, car is paid off. I have zero debt and gorgeous lake views while drinking coffee in the morning. I even watch cartoons. It's a good life that I worked my ass off for - the house and everything in it is mine - and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I just wish my husband was more into gaming.
CyrusTheVirus76@reddit
Many guys watch tons sports or TV, if you replace that with gaming I'd say it's more interactive and engaging for you brain. I have 2 game nights arranged with my wife were I chat and hangout with my friends and play games. These are guys who I go see movies with, parties, golf etc.
They live 45 minutes away and we can't always be physically hanging out every week. This group of friends have helped me through many hard times. Many women talk to their friends for hours upon hours. This is a more modern way to do this.
bananajr6000@reddit
I don’t spend “all my free time gaming.”
I go out with friends. I should exercise more; the pool is where I get most of mine. I am the primary cook in the family and am always trying out new recipes. We travel. I read a lot. I go to converts and shows. Went to a hockey game yesterday. I do 3D printing and am developing my own designs. I’m not into cars, hunting or golf. Not a runner anymore after an injury. I don’t have the opportunity for business travel right now. I am in a supportive relationship and we do most things together
And I’m a gamer. And my wife is a gamer

ChodaRagu@reddit
Listen. I’m a 54 year old male.
You grew up playing PONG, on a console that was ONLY designed to play Pong, connected to your B&W television, and trying to beat your older sister at it every chance you get.
Then along comes the Atari 2600, and it feels like a “life changer”, with an actual library of games you could buy! (And you did!)
Then along comes the new bowling alley in your small town and it has a half-dozen arcade games inside, and you pump quarters into it playing PAC-MAN and Donkey Kong and you think the graphics are amazing!
Then the owner of the bowling alley, realizing he makes more on arcade games than food, expands his “arcade area” to include even more arcade games, rotated frequently, to keep you hooked, and riding your bike up there every time you had allowance money in your pocket.
Now it’s 1983…..and so on, and so on….
Being a GenX Gamer is wired into our lives!
We were essentially there at the beginning of mass-market video gaming. Be it consoles or arcade games, and I’m not even touching on hand-held games, which were also a major contributor. We’ve witnessed first hand the evolution of video gaming.
To be 54 and walk into a GameStop or plunk some credits into an arcade game at Dave & Busters during a corporate outing with your co-workers, is nothing you should be ashamed or embarrassed for.
Your curiosity to see “what’s next” in video gaming is a great way, in my opinion, to see why life is worth living. To give us GenX’rs some small “hope” for a better future.
We have 50+ years of experience in witnessing video games becoming better.
I think, deep down, it gives us hope that maybe our own “individual worlds” will too.
And beyond all of that, they’re just so damn fun!!

Fight_Tyrnny@reddit
Ya, insane question. I met my Aunt for the first time in 40 years. Last time she saw me was when my parents sent me to my grandparents during summer of oh like 1987 (7th/8th grade). I took my NES with me since I knew there would be nothing to do at my grandparents house (and there was not).
So, I sat around playing my NES.
So, I'm eating dinner with my aunt and she makes a comment like "You are doing so well, considering all you did was play video games as a kid".
I was kinda shocked at that because no, in fact I didn't just play video games, I spend more time outside. At this point, I also had a C64 and spent a lot of time learning on it.
So, dear aunt, it was video games and my C64 that got me interested in computers, graduated with a degree in computer science and had a pretty good life over the past 40 years...
So ya, video games IS GenX and its one of the reasons we are so technologically savvy vs you boomers.
I recently just streamed the entire playthrough of Zelda 1, 40 years after I beat it for the first time, and it was a ball.

I still play a couple hours a day on my switch or ps5 and don't care who knows it. I have no kids, all the toys are mine. I tried getting my husband more into it, but doesn't really like games post-sega. He talked about hooking up the sega the other day so he can play Desert Strike. I used to like that console for Road Rash and Earthworm Jim. I'd definitely play those again.
KnoWanUKnow2@reddit
I'm just getting back into video games after an absence of around 20 years. I had to give them up soon after the kids were born due to lack of spare time. But now they've left home and I've got more time to dive back into video games. I hear that there's this game called Portal that might be popular, dunno I gave up gaming just before it was released.
Of course part of the fun will be hitting my kids with outdated memes. The cake is a lie, I took an arrow to the knee and all that. Eventually I'll probably catch up enough to play against them online.

My parents wouldn’t let me play video games when I was a kid, or at least they wouldn’t let have a game console or computer. I think it was mostly a cost issue. So maybe it would be more fair to say I couldn’t afford to play video games. Most of my game play was at the 7-11 after I would finish collecting for my paper route. I was finally able to get a console when I was about thirty years old. I have played a lot of video games since then. I let my kids get into gaming young because I was hoping it might moderate the amount of time that they would desire to play. I thought if it was alway available it would be less imperative to them. It totally worked with daughter, but massively back fired with my son. I also thought it would be a way we could connect with each other. Again it worked with my daughter, we love to play slow paced games like Snow Runner, Farm simulator, stardew, etc. My son is borderline addicted the only way I could get him to go outside was buying us dirt bikes.
I’m straying off point but isn’t that what old people do. So yes I play games now and playing as an old person makes more sense to me. So many games are oriented to adults in their design and gameplay, and it’s bloody expensive. Been playing video games for 50 years. At home or the arcade, I don’t care. I play video games.
JessieColt@reddit
We are the generation that sits between Pong and Clair Obscur (2025 Game of the Year).
Our peers created some of THE best video games of their time. Games that pushed visual graphics and computer capabilities to the leading edge of what they were capable of, and forced both industries to dedicate resources to improving both.
Why should we not be willing to play not only those older games, but the ones that are being created today?
Cattitoode@reddit
I remember playing Everquest at around 30yo and asking someone in my group how old he was and he said he was 60. I didn't believe him, because I just didn't think anyone could be still playing games at 60. But here I am at 56 playing FFXIV after having played wow for 20+ years. Now I understand why that guy's reactions were slow though!

My husband plays Fortnite every day for about an hour. He is 59. We were there at the start of video games. Why wouldn’t we keep playing them?

I’m feel weird to not be a video game player. My limited access for 3 yrs as a teen was arcade Pac-Man & world soccer (different country, different times). All my coworkers and friends play. My teen has a number of great games but honestly I’m not patient enough, plus I have stuff that needs doing before bedtime.

I had a large renovation going on at my home this past winter for 3 months and I played GTA5 most days in my basement. Nah I’m 54 and so is my husband and we love playing video games every once in awhile. We also love playing them with the grandchildren and I use to play them with my children when they were younger. I didn't start playing RPGs until I was 2018. Luckily my favorite game has a lot of old timers in it. On some 4 person teams I'm the baby, lol. And I don't feel too old.
That said, I've never purchased a video game in person. It's Amazon for the Switch and Steam for the PC.

Nope! Although I'm not into the same video games that my students are, we still talk about them. I tell them it is a great way to keep up your eye hand coordination and mental acuity. sleepy_potatoe_@reddit
Nope. I got my own controller now and I can play video games whenever I want.
inarticulateblog@reddit
Nah. I've been playing videogames since I was at least 3 (og pong and ms pacman), and just a head's up, it wasn't always considered an appropriate hobby for a girl. My mom was always really cool about it because she thought videogames had the potential to teach hand/eye coordination and problem solving skills because I always played relatively narrative heavy games or games based on discovery/puzzles.
I'm pretty sure that my ability to adapt to new systems when most people my age crash out about it is a result of me staying flexible in thought patterns and adapting to new gaming styles and game types over the years. People should not discount how much cognitive benefit there is in genuinely playing games, especially ones that have a degree of difficulty/friction you have to adapt to.

No, I don’t feel weird.
Kinda weird that you thought about kicking a 16 year old kid’s ass while you’re shopping though.
My homies and I played CoD online together from the early 2000s until like 5 years ago. Video games should be fun, and this one was fun until the cross-platform hackers, microtransactions, streamers, and inflated prices ruined the entire franchise. CoD is a cesspool now.
I still play video games, but have gravitated back to the Nintendo platform. Zelda BoTW and ToTK are incredible games that I still play with my kids. We even busted out our old Wii a couple of weeks ago. Tennis and bowling in Wii Sports is so fun!
Helldivers 2 isn’t what I’d call a kid’s game, but it’s still pretty wholesome for the PvE aspect and it’s really fun to drop in on a planet with the homies. No one is cheating, no one is spawn camping, just people helping people. Just don’t think about it analogously to the USA and you’re good.😂

Gen X is the very first gaming generation where most of us grew up with Pong, Atari, or arcades already existing.
No Gen has more of a right to play games than us, we cut out teeth on simplistic graphics but some of the hardest games ever made are from our generation. And some games were broken or completely unfair.
Dark Souls is a piece of cake, and merly requires patience.
Compared to Ghosts and Goblins or fighting Mike Tyson in Punch Out, and many other NES, Sega, and Arcade games, the game famouse for the term "get gud", DS and such it's significantly easier.
50yo and I play games from every decade still.
I'll go from playing and old D&D Goldbox or Ultima titles from the mid 80s to games still in development and still in beta, so so new they aren't officially out yet.
But I'm interested in gaming history and concepts, so Im not a standard gamer. Too many games for a normal person, think just between Steam and GOG I own over 6,000 titles.
I'll never play them all, too many.
But you are not too old for games, in the 90s my dad beat my Prince of Persia before I did.
Ive seen him play three games in my life (Bezerk, Doom, and PoP), so that surprised me.
I also say too much frequently and abruptly stop.

My husband is not a gamer, but he gets it. He just doesn't like it if I get too loud & sometimes he likes to poke fun if I yell something crazy.

Hubby and I met through video games. We play to this day in our 50s. Wouldn't have it any other way
tango421@reddit
Same story with my wife. We truly enjoy gaming. Video games mostly, but also board games, and TTRPGs.
Fwumpy@reddit
Because of table tops, I tell people I'm an old school gamer! Have played D&D since the basic and expert books!
tango421@reddit
Nice! It was AD&D for me. Haven’t had a game in a few years but we’re about to start a PF2E with my wife and friends.
There ain’t no school like old school.
Fwumpy@reddit
So wicked! I liked how 3.5 changed the thac0 rules, but 2nd edition seemed to have the best book collection! My DM had the Encyclopedia Magica. My favourite character was a half-elf, chaotic neutral, wild mage! Always in trouble and escaping prosecution...
My best AD&D character was a half-elven bard! 18 dexterity, 18/67 strength!

Astronaut6735@reddit
Nah. I've been playing video games regularly since I was a kid. I found an old student newspaper from 7th grade, and one of the columns in it was titled "Can You Imagine?" It was a series of questions like "Can you imagine Joey not playing soccer?", and "Can you imagine Kim not playing piano?" There's one in there for me: "Can you imagine Astronaut6735 not playing video games?" I cannot! Of course back then we were playing arcade games before and after school at a gas station/convenience store about a block from school.

Class of 86 checking in. I'd feel weird if I WASN'T playing video games.
We didn't have online walkthroughs either, we had to figure it out. We had to power through 2600 games with a broken joystick. Deal with passwords instead of save files. Line our quarters up for next game of Guantlet. Had to grind our red Mattel football to the end zone over and over. Deal with Alkaline batteries. Find that perfect spot of light to barely see your Tetis pieces fall.
We are the video games equivalent of walked to school uphill both ways. That kid should have looked at you like a wise sage.
Not to mention all the other cool $#!7 they now enjoy because of us. Skateboarding, snowboarding, IM/message boards, texting, sneaker culture, online gaming, alt/grunge/rap music, trading cards, reality TV, portable headphones...and so much more.
What has Gen Z given us? Influencers, TikTok, entitlement and pronouns.

Fast forward 35 years and I find myself dying of pancreatic cancer and I’m stuck in bed a lot. A friend gave me an old PS4 and a copy of Subnautica. I became OBSESSED.
I played Subnautica, Subnautica: Below Zero, Ark Survival, No Man’s Sky, Outer Wilds, and other survival/exploration games. I can’t believe I waited til my final year of life to realize what I’ve been missing out on!

Right there with you sister! I am fully retired at 57, and I play so much Skyrim. Tried ESO, prefer solitary over multiplayer. And I plan to never be too old, they'll have to pry the mouse out of my dead hands (I play on PC).

My dad got me into gaming when he brought the Atari 2600 home. Been a wrap since that day. He played until he passed at 68. I'll be 58 next month and still play. Platinumed Bloodborn a few years ago and platinumed Retunal a couple years ago. I was doing Elden Ring PVP stuff for a while and when the group found out how old I was they were super excited about it. Like man, this old dude put it on me, lol. Now I'm big into Diablo 4, first Diablo game ever. A buddy of mine and I create builds for the Spiritborn class. Played the new RE9, and currently playing Pragmata. My wife passed 5 years ago today, I'm retired now, and it's just me and the cats.
The cool thing is, I'm like a little kid with big kid money, lol. Want a system, get it. Want a game get it. Wanted a killer home theater setup to gane and watch movies, got it. Grandpa's is like the gaming center for the grandkids. My kids game as well. What people forget is gaming isn't mindless. You have to engage your mind, and really think through stuff sometimes, especially with build crafting. Keeps your mind active, not mush. Anyhow, game on, and I will game until I can't anymore.

No, you are not too old to be playing video games. However, why would you go into a store to buy a game? Are you a console player? I hope not, PC gaming is where the real Gen X gamers are :)
KatJen76@reddit
I don't believe in the fundamental concept of people being too old to enjoy hobbies. Or too young, for that matter, within the limits of safety and general propriety. Teenagers can knit and bird. Olds can color, watch cartoons, and yeah, play video games.

Personally I don’t feel weird. It’s relaxing and enjoyable to play with my kids. I’m 48 and I have 3 different gameboys, 2 NES systems (with power glove, power pad, and zapper), N64 with transparent controllers, both NES and SNES classic minis, Wii (with drum set and guitar) and the Switch. A lot of us have been at it since we were kids, and I really can't see any reason to stop now. I don't have any time for anybody who'd suggest otherwise. Started Twitch streaming at 49, just for the hell of it. There are more than a few of us around.

I’m a 52 year old woman and I still play video games.
Billazilla@reddit
I used to sell games in retail. Some mom asked me, "Why do they put all this sex and bloody violence in games if they're for kids!?"
The answer is: They're not for kids to begin with. Video games as a household product have been around since the 70's. So those kids from two, three, four decades back then are all adults now. Adults with cash and credit cards, and a need for entrainment. A prime market for mature content video games. If a game is rated M, it was never even aimed at underaged children.
The bottom line is that young children don't have $60-70 to sling around regularly, so how is a dev house gonna make money selling bloody tits and guns games to them? It ain't that video game are for kids. It's that a lot of the public hasn't realized the game industry grew up with it's initial customer base. Much like the public didn't realize their kids were playing GTA.
So yeah, nobody needs to be embarrassed about playing video games in adulthood. Unless you're playing Barbie Horse Adventures alone, or trying to 100% Paw Patrol World while your kid sulks cuz you won't give him the controller.

Nope. In fact, I bought the last Mario Kart Switch 2 at Target last week purely out of spite. Two teenagers were standing behind me and my son while we finished playing the demo, making snide comments the whole time about how their mom was buying it for them, how me and my kid were so poor that we had to play the game in-store, and that it was the last one within 100 miles of us. They left to go get their mom and by the time they came back, I was already checking out.
Was it petty? Absolutely. Do I regret it? Not even a little. I played Animal Crossing for hours today.

Games are games. We’re just the first generation that ever had video games available as kids. People older than us didn’t play them simply because they didn’t exist when they were young.

Actually I hate Mountain Dew and I usually only play PC games these days, but that's far less pithy so I went with what felt right. But the sentiment is there nonetheless. I love gaming and have zero plans to stop until God calls me home.
I have had to change up over the years. I used to love fighting games in the 90's, but slowed reaction times with age made it so I couldn't be competitive, so I moved on. Went to shooters in my 30's and played Halo, CoD, MoH, BF games. Mostly Halo. Eventually, I aged out of that with RSIs and such. Now I mostly play old man games. Strategy, RTS, City-Builders, Tower Defense, that kind of stuff. Still love gaming through. Watch a few Twitch Streamers who play games I can't anymore, like to watch EVO in the summer, etc. Good stuff.

No. As a kid, video games were strictly marketed towards kids. It eventually became an everyone thing. Everyone plays video games now. At this point, it's like asking if you feel weird to be watching movies at your age. What movies? What games? There is something for everyone.
poolpog@reddit
I do not feel even the slightest bit weird about it. I think feeling weird about it is nonsensical. It's like asking if you feel weird going to a movie.

Dude, I’ll be NINETY on CoD talking shit about how I hooked up with your great-grandma. I’ll NOT stop playing games.
timfinn1972@reddit
You do you. I don’t get it personally.
Gave up on it when I was about 14 and then had a lot of free time at work in the 90s so started playing Doom 2 and got totally addicted. I loved that game. Gave up after I had solved Doom. After that I realised how much time it had taken up so I decided to focus on something else so spent my time learning Chinese. Moved to China early 2000 to start a business became quite successful. Have enough to retire but will retire properly later in the year if the IEEPA tariff refunds come through ($5m).
None of that would have happened if I had kept playing computer games.
Lower_Classroom835@reddit
It's great that your new hobby lead to success in life. However, not everyone gets sucked into the games, cards, sports... There are people who can do it without getting so absorbed to ruin their life. We are all different.
But kudos to having self control and doing something different that changed your life trajectory into a real success. .

I just retired to Thailand. I'm 58. I bought a gaming laptop and Bluetooth controller before I left . Currently playing Madden, red dead, and cod. It's been years since I consistently played and it's been awesome. It helps that I have just about unlimited free time and that weed is legal here. My 22 year old self would be very pleased to see me!
warmfuzzume@reddit
If adults can play card games, crosswords and various types of puzzles I don’t see why we can’t play video games.
There’s even research that suggests they can help with cognitive decline.
It’s a silly stigma, probably with people who don’t understand modern video games have puzzles, stories and even relaxation built into them. Like Zelda is clearly using spatial reasoning for some shrines and korok puzzles while animal crossing is super relaxing and even has a stretching mini game.
I’m a 53F and you couldn’t pry my switch out of my cold hands. I just left the super Mario movie with my kid too and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m not at all ashamed to admit it. 😂

It’s not something I talk about at work because people would judge me. I also feel a bit uncomfortable playing anything multiplayer because I assume that everyone is 30’years younger than me.
That said, my favorite game right now is Dune Awakening and it seems like a good portion of people playing it are pretty old, so that’s cool
