GenX regarding "bullying"

Thank you. I had a very messed up home life and that contributed a lot to the social skills being underdeveloped, but it was a long time before I understood that.

LadyNorbert@reddit

Yes. I was pretty badly bullied. In hindsight I brought a lot of it on unwittingly, thanks to underdeveloped social skills and undiagnosed neurodivergence. However, some of it was just plain mean girl stuff, and also some sexual harassment from the boys in my class.

Love this! I'm the first person in four generations to even attempt learning Welsh, which has a similar history to the Lenape language, so I can appreciate what you're describing.

Did you go to preschool?

LadyNorbert@reddit

Much better than what ended up happening to me. First they sent me to spend part of kindergarten reading with a second-grade class. Then when I went to first grade, they had me go around to other classrooms and read to the other kids who hadn't gotten the hang of it yet. Nothing like a snotnosed six-year-old reading to other six-year-olds and quietly wondering why they couldn't read for themselves.

They talked about having me skip first grade entirely, but decided not to do that so that I wouldn't be. Joke was on them, I was waaaaaay behind socially anyway. 😉

> I could already read by the time I started kindergarten. Same, and mine was a really small school district so this had never happened before. They didn't know what to do with me. What did they do with you?

My sister is a mortician and she's very big on pre-planning to spare the loved ones as much as grief as possible. I told her I want a Viking funeral with Welsh and Scottish traditions mixed in (bagpipes, daffodils).

Not my parents, but my maternal grandparents. I spent a lot of time with them (they lived across the street) and it affected me heavily. I continued to be and live close to them as an adult and it continued to affect me. When they passed I was 30, and we had to clean out the house and we spent hours trying to scrub nicotine and tar off the walls. Relatedly, I had many ear infections throughout my life, which they have since proven can be caused/made worse by exposure to secondhand smoke. I haven't had a single once since their deaths.

Found out that my ex-fiance, who left me for a girl he met on the very early internet, has since been married and divorced twice (not to that same girl). Meanwhile my husband andI were married 25 years in March. So I think I came out ahead.

Dixie cup dispenser - Did you have one?

Posted by Heavyspire@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 92 comments

LadyNorbert@reddit

Oh yes. I live in the part of Pennsylvania where Dixie Cups were originally made, so it was a bit of local pride. Plus it was always fun to drive east of home and see the factory with the giant Dixie Cup on its roof. They actually just removed it last week, long after the factory closed, to be refurbished for a museum (I think/hope).

LadyNorbert@reddit

I have four in mine. Haven't been able to bring myself to delete them yet. Not sure I ever will. One of them is my beloved great-aunt who died last year - she would have been 101 a few days ago if she was still with us, and she was one of my favorite people. I removed her from my favorite contacts list and that was hard enough.

Saturday morning cartoons. Well into my late teens I enjoyed getting up on Saturday and settling in to watch my preferred lineup. It was something that was just mine.

Did your parents regularly attend your sporting events?

Posted by blackpony04@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 486 comments

LadyNorbert@reddit

I never played sports, but I was the equipment manager for the varsity football team. (With my disability it was the only way I could have an athletic on my college applications.) My parents came to my final game when I was a senior, since all the seniors on the team were announced by name and escorted onto the field by their parents. Otherwise it was "have fun, lock the door when you get home."

Blast from the past reference just popped into my head..."Face!"

On two separate occasions, I went to work wearing two completely different shoes. The funny part is that both times, they were shoes from the same two pairs. They looked almost nothing alike except for being dark colored and I didn't notice until I got to work. The second time it happened, I was at least able to use one of my favorite pop culture jokes from this century. "If I had a nickel for every time I wore mismatched shoes to work, I'd have two nickels - which isn't a lot, but it's weird fhat it happened twice."

Hey Ratbags and Skallywags. What has Reddit taught you?

I actually use two different shampoos. First one is dandruff shampoo because, well, self explanatory. Second is a rosemary shampoo with biotin. The difference this has been making to my hair health is amazing.

I was highly disappointed when one of my GenZ coworkers watched it on my recommendation and said basically the same thing. Her: It was cute and silly. Me: ...it's the closest any movie has ever come to perfection, even Jeremy at CinemaSins said so.
