What is a small pleasure from the past that you miss?

I really miss slow Sunday mornings with the paper, a cup of coffee and a plate of bacon and home fries.
Just sitting there, sipping and eating, slowly turning the pages, reading the news, sports, weather, disagreeing with the editorials, chuckling at the comics, checking the classifieds, doing the crossword puzzle, memorizing the TV Guide and checking out the grocery store deals. There really isn’t anything that compares today.

I miss the dial telephone.
1) the panic when you were outside and hear the first ring… knowing you only had a few rings to run inside before they gave up. You didn’t have any idea if it was your friend, mom, telemarketer and if you missed it there was no message, no call display.
2) quietly listening to your siblings gossip on a second phone. Hoping they don’t notice that “click” when you slowly picked up.
3) the agonizing dialling on a rotary phone. Forgetting what digit you were on and having to start again.
4). Having 20ft curly codes to untangle so you can sit on a nearby couch.
I’m not sure I exactly miss it but there is some simple nostalgic elements of the old rotary phones pre *69, pre tape recorded voice messages, pre wireless handhelds.

One summer we setup a rope swing. Kids came from far and wide to use it. Still blows my mind how many days of pure bliss we got from something so simple. Cut off shorts, no shirts, gone the whole day. This was even before any of my friends had Atari. No arcades within 5 miles. Complete freedom and innocence.
sffood@reddit
I miss peace. Like I don’t need to know what happened 6,000 miles away and I don’t need to know every moron’s opinion about it. I don’t need to know that one person killed his or her entire family in four cities today. That’s just not information I need in my head but I saw the headline and now it’s there.
And when you did something, it was just about doing that thing. Be it a kind act or a work of art, you just did it and that was that. You didn’t post it, and certainly others didn’t film you doing it. At most, it was a story you could tell later on in life when appropriate.

I really miss newspapers, magazines, and paperback books that weren't oversized garbage. My folks were both avid readers and we always had tons of shit to read all over the house. I grew up reading Time, US News and World Report, the Atlantic, the Economist, etc. plus the newspapers from the tri-state area we lived in Nebraska lol
National Geographic and Readers Digest were good, too. Good Housekeeping, Redbook, etc.
We used to get magazines and newspapers from New York too.
The joy of sprawling out with a newspaper or great magazine is a lost pleasure.

When roadtrips or trips in general were real exploration. Even if you had maps in the car, you could get lost and had no way of knowing what you'd find.
No GPS, no ability to see we're 7.3 miles away from our destination. I miss that sometimes.
JackZLCC@reddit
Being in a car with a driver who knows where they're going... and DOESN'T use GPS like a zombie. Why the hell does someone turn on GPS when they're going somewhere to which they know the way? It just adds stress and artificiality to a simple car ride to a well known location. (And I'm not talking about situations where there are multiple routes, and there may be traffic problems, so they're seeking up to the minute best guidance.)
Immediate-Unit2593@reddit
I’ve found I’m a better driver with Waze when I’m on the highway. Hazard alerts, (car on side of road) so I can move over is my preferred update. It also allows me to make room for semi’s or large vehicles so they can get over too.
JoeSpart@reddit
I turn on WAZE even if I know where I’m going because it can alert me if there has been an accident and traffic is backing up so I can take a different route. Also alerts for cops on front 😉

The simplicity of life. No cell phones. News was only on tv and papers, people talking and gathering outside. I am not a fan of constant cameras and videos in everyone's pockets. The enjoyment of taking pictures at special times and the excitement of film being processed.
People going over other peoples houses. Just popping over.
peppermentpattie@reddit
Popping over without being asked to. I wouldn't have liked that.
blueeyedaisy@reddit
We did this all the time in the 70' and 80's. For example I had my friend's sports stuff in the car and we (mom and I) were going to drive right by her house on the way home from the store. Stop, ring the bell and drop it off. No worries.
Story time. 2010 My husband's friend (29) married a girl (21). I was 34 at the time, he wanted me to show her around the area and do something together. We went to Jamba Juice and a movie. She left her sweater in my car. I entered our housing complex and thought I will just drop it off.
Boy was I wrong. I rang her bell, she opened her door and barked at me "YOU CAN'T JUST DO THIS!". Well f*uck me. I dropped the sweater right there on the porch, without saying a word I turned and left. Never spoke to her again. I didn't have time for that crap. Kids these days. Honestly, up until that time I had a flip phone.

My mother tried every fad diet she could get into.
She wasn't grossly overweight. Chubby sure. But not like morbidly obese.
Didn't matter. She was determined to shed weight somehow.
Jenny Craig, Phen Phen, Weight Watchers, anything Richard Simmons put out, Slim Fast shakes. She'd go for these long ass walks. Got a bike, and then an exercise bike for indoors.
My stepdad sat there and got fat. My mother exercised and starved herself to lose maybe 20 pounds. And as soon as she took her foot off the gas, it came back.
Remember in the 80s and 90s when everything went fat free as if fat was the problem? So they'd fill it with sugar and carbs and you'd still be fucked.
Weight loss was big business then too.
FaustusRedux@reddit
I don't know about you, but I'm dealing with parents who probably would be a lot happier now if they'd spent a little more time exercising and drinking water when they were our age.
tramad2652@reddit
My mom and dad are now 85 years old. They still live on their own and ice cream at night in front of the TV is still a thing. socgrandinq@reddit
They didn’t though. Fad diets were all over the place. Airline attendants had weight requirements in the 50s, 60s etc

Also, remember when there was a special box for newspapers underneath the mail box? It used to have the name of the paper written along the side of the box.
azchocolatelover@reddit
We had 2 of those boxes, one on each side of the mailbox. My dad subscribed to the local morning, evening and Sunday papers. The Sunday edition was the reason for the 2nd box. Don't ask me why though. All 3 came out of the same newspaper company.
Pony_Baloney_Acad@reddit
That's so cool ! My family never had one, and so our papers were subject to the elements with only a plastic bag
tramplamps@reddit
Those are highly coveted as collectors items, and I often see them around here displayed as lawn ornaments in people’s flower beds.
We inherited our home from a dead relative who had given hers that was for the local afternoon edition, to our neighbor that we share back property lines with. So I get to see it every time I look in his backyard as part of his little garden display.

I miss taking my son to playgrounds.
There's a stereotype about GenX and how we survived scorching hot metal slides, wooden teeter totters that you could run into and lose teeth as well as the wheels of misfortune we'd clung to as our friends spun us around and around. But frankly, I loved playing on all that stuff.
When I was in my 30s and my son was old enough, I'd happily stop the car no matter what we were doing if I spotted an interesting playground. He'd run around and have a great time while I'd get to swing and run and play right along with him.
The playground "technology" is amazing now, too! Spinning climbing structures, hanging bars that slide, swings for special needs kids. One park even has a play structure that is literally a giant wooden ogre.
My son is in his 20s. So unless he has kids of his own, I can't play at the playgrounds or even watch kids play unless I want to risk getting accused of being a creepy old man.

notashroom@reddit
Ha ha ha! Nope. I am a socially awkward introvert who makes friends with social butterflies so that I can have humans in my life. I haven't even left my hill yet this year.
liddybuckfan@reddit
Honestly, I hated that. All the record store employees would snag tickets for themselves and their 50 closest friends before the first person got in the door. I can't tell you how many times I waited all night, was first in line, and ended up with 25th row. At some point they moved the ticket outlet from the record store to a chain of drug stores and that was better-the drug store employees couldn't have cared less about getting concert tickets.
tramplamps@reddit
If we wanted tickets for a show on opening day that they were available, we had to tell our manager in advance, because the store policy wouldn’t allow us to work and be a ticket master customer at the time.
This might’ve just been my high-profile enormous location, but even when we would be at the checkout desk, and if it was a slow moment, with no customers waiting in line, we learned to always casually check in for better seats, as newly released tickets always became available as the date of the actual event got closer. This was because of all the record labels that somehow managed to get rows & rows of reserved seats well in advance of the ticket release, as well as the fact that both BMI & ASCAP’s Headquarters were here in town, the people that worked down on music row in those buildings seemed to be the ones who always gobbled up the finest seats.
But I guess their employees had a time window to claim them, because there was always great seats available a few days before a show, that hadn’t been there in ticket release day.
I saw so many shows because of being at work on random weekdays, and just happen to check the seats for any new available tickets. But never did we as store employees get first dibs. I can see how a smaller, less corporate smaller record store might get away with this. But We always had to either wait I line like everyone else, or “clock out” before purchasing any tickets.
liddybuckfan@reddit
This was pre-ticketmaster days that I'm talking about. I think it was still Bass tickets? The employees were definitely taking tickets off the top, I saw them do it and it wasn't like they really hid what they were doing. They may have even been scalping them, I have no idea. This was the Miami area in the mid to late- 80s, pretty much anything goes was the mindset. Like I said, once it went from the record store to the drug store (which is I think when it shifted to Ticketmaster) that pretty much stopped and I could get first or second row if I was first in line.
tramplamps@reddit
I worked at a Blockbuster Music store in 1996, in Nashville (previously, it had been a Turtles), and we had one of the old green text/black screen Ticketmaster Computers at the checkout desk. I was always scheduled for those early Saturday morning ticket release days, as was mist of the other kids on staff, because back then, their systems only accepted cash to pay for tickets. So within just that first 30 minutes, after the customers were allowed inside, our store would often had hundreds of Dollars in the drawer, and would have no way to move it out until the nightly deposit.
The busiest Ticket Release Saturday ever I worked at the time I was there, was for a local Garth Brooks show that the tickets went up for sale in mid January 1997 only about 20 hours after I having surgery to remove a ganglion cyst from the wrist on my dominant hand. I worked the computer and sold so many tickets while in a sling and in pain, but everyone in line were so excited and very nice.

The break room at work, sitting around with your coworkers talking about last night’s episode of Friends or Seinfeld because everyone watched it!
tramplamps@reddit
I am one of the few people in this generation, who completely missed the fever dream that was Thursday night NBC television in the early/mid 90s, which included the Friends, Sienfield, & E.R. at their peak popularity.
Because, as a Theater major all 4 years from 92-96 who was on a scholarship, we were required to always be at the theater, every night, for every rehearsal, every set strike, and we were also required to build every set, which meant we had work in the shop, every day from 3-5.
Years later, when I had the opportunity to watch all the shows I missed, as they were now in syndication, I could never get into Friends past a few episodes, and the Kramer guy on Seinfeld reminded me of that guy Sha an na, from the 70s.
But I did end up loving E.R. Even though I didn’t start watching it until late 1999.
Me never likening Seinfeld is weird, because I loved the Larry David show, because I, of course, had never seen any quite like it.

Having an actual kitchen. Moved into our renovation project a month ago, there's one bedroom and one bath and a screen porch which are livable. Had to gut the kitchen last week, ripping up all the hardwood and subfloor and even joists, down to crawlspace (which is...wet 😳). I'm tired of "glamping" in my own house with a camp stove on the porch. The number of wild animals we contend with is truly insane. (House was abandoned for a long time...other creatures consider it home). I would enjoy having a proper kitchen again.

We did our big renovation the summer of 2019, and it lasted nearly 6 months. We also missed having modern accommodations. I still have so many paper plates from that time, because I hated handwashing them in the bathroom.

I just remembered this. One of my neighbors owned the local drug store and he had a huge table in his store with penny candy. Throughout the 60's and 70's he never raised the price. We would get loose change from our parents and run to the drug store for candy. The owner, who we called Uncle Arnold, lived 2 doors down from me loved kids and we'd draw him pictures and sit and tell him about school and he'd give us lollipops. He is one of the best memories of my childhood.
Evening-Push9871@reddit
that sounds like an absolute fever dream compared to how things are now. it feels like every neighborhood staple has been replaced by a generic chain where nobody knows your name or gives a kid anything for free. uncle arnold sounds like a legend for holding onto those prices for that long. honestly feels like we lost the plot somewhere along the way.

Not just this, but the concept of needing to go to a particular place to do a particular thing is very important, and losing that requirement for a lot of things has been detrimental.
One of those things that's now ~20 years in the past: Needing to physically go to a computer (which wasn't easily moved) to be online. Sure, there's upside and convenience to mobile devices, but I think there's a large amount of downside and damage being done that we've still not fully realized. Like attention theft. How many hours a day are being stolen from people by memes and short form video? How much misinformation has been spread because people can read propaganda while pooping? The mobile device has become a black hole stealing the one resource we can never recover: Time.
When you factor in the time most people are losing to things like Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube shorts, just how "convenient" or how much of a "time saver" is a mobile phone now?
For a lot of people, it's just another gateway for corporations to show them ads. And they want you to waste more time on the phone, because that means they get to show you more ads.
liddybuckfan@reddit
Absolutely! To this point, phones have eliminated what they call "third spaces" for teens today. I met my friends at the arcade every Saturday night. Teens now don't have a lot of dedicated spaces to just go and hang out together.

Downtown_Statement87@reddit
Everyone was watching the same thing because there were only 3 or 4 channels. Pretty much everyone, no matter who they were, watched the last episode of MASH or Dallas, or the premier of the Thriller video, so everyone had at least one thing they could talk about. It's called the "monoculture."
Now there's so much media available 24/7 that people are able to curate what they see and hear to their individual interests, so there's not much of a shared culture anymore.

Definitely - between that newsprint smell, bacon, coffee, home fries… a veritable aroma. And this was around the era that I argued with my then newlywed husband about how it’s a civilized thing to read the paper while you eat because it was one of my great comforts at that time in my life. Now it’s all podcasts in my AirPods and doing multiple things at once, life is much faster/busier.

Browsing for ages through Tower Records in the 80s or 90s, knowing I’d always, always find something.
Incubroz@reddit
Where I live (UK) we used to have Mike Lloyd’s Music. I’d regularly catch a bus to go almost 10 miles to get there, then spend hours on end browsing through CDs, Vinyls, T-shirts, posters and a board filled with little cards advertising gigs. If there was a gig we looked there look of, you could buy physical tickets there and then and often get coach travel at the same time.
On the bus home I’d be reading over and over sleeve notes and lyrics of any music of locked up, eagerly anticipating playing it when I got back.
Now there’s no music shops to browse, other than a few niche little places selling vinyls and buying gig tickets is both expensive and often a lottery, trying to pick up scraps after the touts have snapped them up.
Being able to search for and download music in seconds now is obviously much easier but also far, far less rewarding.
parnassus744@reddit
Yeah exactly— music at your fingertips 24/7, just a click away, but the experience and the fun left the room long ago. What’s really weird, at least for me, is that there was a “last-ever browsing session” through a record shop, I just didn’t know that day that it’d be the last time I ever went to one; just happened I guess when I got my first iPod back in 2005. I just stopped buying CDs, and that was it. Over. Strange to think of it that way!

You don't need to miss those things, brother. You can pretty much get them at a participating grocery store near you.
Scarpity026@reddit
The newspapers available today aren't remotely the same thing that we had even 25 years ago. Staffing has been decimated at effectively all of them in favor of a consolidated office in another state for all papers that company owns. The local writing and reporting that made each paper unique has all but vanished.
RealCrazySwordGirl@reddit
Order the Sunday New York Times delivered. I don't think it'll disappoint, if you love paging slowly through a bunch of sections. There's all kinds of stuff in there.

Scarpity026@reddit
Unless you live in the NYC metro, that's not a local paper and even the construction of that has changed just like every major daily paper in the country.
Those of you who insist we can still enjoy the simple pleasures of yesteryear because the physical components to allow that experience to happen still exist today are kind of missing the point.
RealCrazySwordGirl@reddit
I guess it just hasn't been that long since i did the exact scenario described in the op.

I simply miss the obvious things that weren't so obvious as kids and that so many of us including myself took for granted at the time like how great it felt to be young and healthy. It just felt to me like I had so much time left to live back then and I felt so much better. Time seemed to turn so slow for me when I was young and like many I didn't realize just how quickly the years and my life would fly by. I honestly never gave much thought at all about my own mortality back then. Now that I'm about to turn 57 and dealing with inoperable brain cancer I must admit that it's sometimes very difficult facing the fact that not only am I no longer young and healthy or feeling that great but I'm also very quickly approaching the final stages of my life.

I miss when things were special because they weren't available 24/7/365. Now it seems everything is always available on-demand, and instant gratification has replaced the ramp up anticipatory excitement. Checking the TV Guide each week to see if the once-a-year showing of the original Batman movie would be on that week, which meant bedsheets hung over the dining room table to make a tent, and special treats like soda and popcorn. Listening to the radio for your favorite song to be played, because we couldn't afford to buy the record or CD. The rustling of the Sunday paper, hanging out with my dad, reading the comics and making silly putty transfers of them and stretching them to make them silly. Making eyecontact with people in public places, before those connections with people stopped because now everyone has their eyeballs buried in their phones.

Friday Night Videos!
As a teen, this was a big deal. I'm Canadian, and MTV was in the US, but MuchMusic wasn't born yet.
We'd gather at one person's house and all watch it together.
The two I distinctly remember was "Take On Me" and "Hungry Like the Wolf". Mind blowing!! If I happen to hear those songs played on some classic radio station now, it flashes me right back to head bands and jelly shoes. Good times and still so innocent
stalkythefish@reddit
Friday Night Videos was on NBC in the Friday 11:30 time slot because Letterman was Mon-Thurs.
Night Flight was on USA and preceded USA's "UP All Night".
SarahJaneB17@reddit
They always started of each 3 hour section with a Duran Duran video. I never missed them. I definitely annoyed my dorm mates with that. Wasn't it on TBS? Or was it USA?
Practicality_Issue@reddit
Night Flight?
Shoot. I would have had a very confident answer for you if you hadn’t put USA or TBS out there. Now I can’t recall - but if you are indeed talking about Night Flight - there’s an Instagram account for them. It’s pretty fun!
SarahJaneB17@reddit
Oh right! Yes, I think you are right. Night Flight. I will definitely check that out.
Practicality_Issue@reddit
It was the best! MTV was cool, but if you had the most basic cable, Night Flight was a godsend. I was just telling my GF a day or two ago I wished there was a channel that would just play music videos…YouTube can pull it off sometimes, but it’s just not the same.

However, it was kind of fun to call someone up and hang up on them. I know that caller ID made this impossible to do from home. However, there were pay phones all over the place. You could put in a quarter make your call and then just hang up before the person answers and you would get your quarter back.

Even in the 00s you couldn't easily trace where a number was coming from. There was a public phone for some reason by the elevators in my building in college and one night, at around 2am, I found out it could dial out so called my best friend and just listened but didn't talk as he sleepily kept saying hello. I did this for 6 months randomly at all hours of the day because for some dumb reason he kept picking up and he got more and more agitated as time went on. Towards the end, I could barely hold my composure on a lot of the calls because he'd be screaming and cussing at the phone. It was even more hilarious because I'd regularly get to hear about how pissed off he was at this prank caller and what he was gonna do to them if he found out who it was. I stopped when he told me it was getting to the point that he was thinking of going to the police lol.

Family dinners when my Dad would get up from the table early and we knew it was no holds barred night. Always the same meal; pot roast, mashed potatoes, and a veg usually peas or corn or even green beans.
As long as we cleaned up after, my Mom just sat and laughed, often joining in the fun.
One night, my older brother sat and waited to eat until my Dad got up and went out to the garage, his sort of happy place when older brother (K-older) smashed his entire face into his plate and started to gobble...with corresponding noises...while we 3 kids (K-younger, K-Sis, and myself) sat in shock. Taters started to fly a few seconds later and I swear my Dad even came in during cleanup with a grin on his face.
Ahhh, family dinners. 😊

Trick-Statistician10@reddit
Oh no. What happened?
rundabrun@reddit
I moved out of the country, had my records stored by a friend of my fathers storage space.
Out of the blue the guy said he was in a divorce, losing the house and I had to get my records. Maybe 2,000, many rare, had to be removed within days. I had no way to return, no options, but I knew a guy that owned a record shop. He drove 200 miles to check if he could buy them. He took the whole lot and the turntables.
He gave me a generous price, although if I were to individually sell them myself, it would have been far more. I would have never sold them so it doesn't matter.
I am just happy they will move on to new homes. A bunch of my music equipment, personal family photos, and basically everything else was "trashed". I have a feeling his sons came up on my stuff, but I am over it.
It might sound crazy but that was hard for me. I have played with records as long as I can remember. I had Sesame Street records, story book records, and would listen to any adult records I could get my hands on. It was my thing.

I try not to get nostalgic as a rule, but an old song I listened to in high school snuck up in a playlist and got me yesterday. It made me think of driving my old TR6 with the top down in spring, taking my girlfriend to feed her lambs…we’d be there during the golden hour. We’d try to figure out how to make out in the car and fumble around with that for a while.
On weekends we’d go meet up on the main drag with friends. Bounce around, in and out of other peoples cars, listening to music, goofing off, cokes at the Dairy Queen, or maybe we’d have movie tickets and drive a couple of towns over to see Bill & Ted’s excellent adventure, young guns, that Indian Jones movie with Sean Connery as his dad…
Cassette tapes playing loudly through pioneer speakers, sitting on the hood of the car. Graduation was just a few weeks away - and everything would change for me the day after.
All of that seemed okay at the time, but now it just seems to beautiful and impossible now. I graduated with 82 other people, and now I live in a metro area of 7 or 8 million and growing fast. I can’t imagine how far I’d have to drive to even find a dirt road, and I certainly don’t expect Bob Seger, Pink Floyd, Great White or Gun N Roses to put out a new album…I do kind of miss it.

TP_Crisis_2020@reddit
It was a simpler time. I grew up in a little bumfuck town and had pretty much the same experience. Really miss it.
But something I have learned - I would never choose to go back and live there as an adult. I ended up in a big metro area out west, and have been able to take advantage of so many opportunities out here that I never would have if I had stayed in my hometown. I still talk to many of my friends who stayed back in my little home town, and it's like time stood still.. still the same ol' town with nothing ever happening, nothing new, and low wage jobs.
Practicality_Issue@reddit
Same. Absolutely the same.
My 20th reunion fell on a Friday/Saturday right after I had spent a few days in Hong Kong for work. Every homecoming they do this little parade thru town, and I stood there next to my car, jet lagged as hell, and all I could think of was how out of place I felt.
Hong Kong? Perfectly at ease. Comfortable. Happy. BFE where I grew up? Nearly jumped back in my car and headed home.
I won’t go back, but I’d like my own current version of that simplicity. Hickeys are still fun too.

Going to the lake house and swimming off the dock, burning 100+ gallons of gasoline in ski boats and jet skis. Had a fireworks show every weekend.
Shooting pistols and rifles at targets, just generally doing whatever the fuck we wanted.
European friends would come over and one once said "this is the greatest day in my life" after we had boated and shot guns all day.
The lake house is gone, gas is $7 a gallon on the lake anyway, can't just shoot anywhere you want to, things have changed.
That still exists but middle class people can't do it anymore.
Most folks can't do the shit we used to do on a regular basis anymore.
I recently went to a wealthy friend's place and we did all those things but it was a bachelor party kinda thing and he was saying it cost $5k just for the fireworks. None of that stuff is accessible for regular people anymore.

Conversations with people when knowing things required more than just pulling a phone out of your pocket to google the answer. The name of a movie "that guy was in" before this one, talking about an article I read in the newspaper or magazine., having to put effort in to find the name of the actor in the movie trailer you just watched and what else he had been it. Discovering a new to your band or singer, and having people over to listen to the new tape or record instead of just emailing or texting a link.
SarahJaneB17@reddit
Blockbuster used to have a phone book sized movie reference book near the counter. Analog IMDB. You could look up an actor and all of their movies were listed. Many where do I know that actor from questions were answered this way.
Far_Village_8010@reddit
I think about this a lot. You usually knew which person to ask about a specific question.
Who was the singer who sang "blah blah"? Ask my brother. What was that movie with that guy? Ask my dad.
Both parents are gone now and I feel like I lost so much knowledge about things that I can never look up.

It really applied more to teenagers than adults, so I don't miss it in the same sense, but there was something to listening to the Top 20 countdown shows, I guess especially to Casey Casum's. The St. Pete Times was really good back then. The used to do these serialized long form investigative articles. If there was one going and I wouldn't be at home for the next installment I made sure someone saved it for me. There was one in particular about a local murder with a major suspect that they couldn't get enough evidence on. I've always wondered if that ever got solved. Along that same vein, when we watched the evening news and knew it was consistent across networks. Doesn’t meant there may not have been a story bias slant, but the story was covered generally holistically. Sunday BBQs with the extended family and friends. The smell as Dad started the BBQ drifting around the neighborhood as while we were either swimming in the pool next door or out on our bikes. We’d make our way home once the smoke started and help mom with the melon, spinach dip and veggies. Dad would often cook a mix of chicken, vegetables and some sort of beef so everyone has an option.
We’d sit outside eating on paper plates and as we finished, we’d clean up and then return to the yard to just sit and chat until it got dark or the bugs got too bad.
Everyone would start to leave and I often stayed with a book until I got too tired to keep reading. I often returned home during college and even after for these days. I miss these moments the absolute most.

Bugs Bunny and Road Runner Show on CBS, with my father cooking breakfast in the kitchen. A cold winter morning outside and I'm on the warm wall-to-wall carpet or our giant 10-piece couch. If I'm really lucky then I'm in dad's recliner chair. I have a warm cup of black tea with milk and sugar. Meep-Meep! Ooooooo, I really hate that rabbit! Mehhhhhhh, What's Up, Daaaaaaahk?

When I was a kid my uncle used to take me to horse stables on Saturday mornings to watch them train the Race Horses. Then he would take me to a diner for a plate of fries and gravy. Simple pleasures that I loved. 🥰

I miss Kraft Dinner. It used to be sooo good! And McDonald’s!!! I miss not having to worry about bringing home bed bugs from the movie theatre. And that people really were quiet when the movie was on. I miss everything closed on Sundays. So much more relaxed! I miss walking to the corner store that was just a mom & pop outfit and buying a bag full of candy for a dime. I miss taking the bus…can’t do that nowadays cause it’s not safe (my city gave up trying to enforce fares so all the irritants ride around all day for free). And I miss hearing gangs of children out in the neighbourhood till the sun went down.

Kraft Dinner? I found the Canadian, lol! 😉

Actually I can’t since I work every Sunday. Not to mention that the only available Sunday paper in my area is a sensational gossip rag.

Sunday papers. I used to get 3-4 of them and read through every section with a selection of bagels and bottomless lattes the whole day.
MassDelusion101@reddit
They were always double thick and I’d have to beg for the Parade insert and the cartoon section because it was done in color on Sundays.

Maybe get a newspaper subscription and live this one out? Might not be local news or have TV Guide but..
Onyx_Lat@reddit
Our local paper has shrunk and doesn't come out every day anymore. Also it's not even printed in town anymore.

Yeah, the newspaper you'd get would just be a depressing insult to what the newspaper used to be.

When my sister father & I would meet in the kitchen on Sunday morning. Dad would cook breakfast or just listen to us joke/complain about our individual nights. I worked at a radio station and had weird callers Sat nights. Sister worked at a gas station and had weirdos come in. We'd laugh have breakfast and watch him smile. I could tell he looked forward to those Sunday mornings. Those were better days.

$3.35! Same at my first jobs. I remember my first 40-hour week at that rate (at Toys R Us) when I was on Christmas break from college. It was a great incentive to not quit school at the time because even at 19 years old, that sure didn’t seem worth it!

I miss getting to chat with my mom about everything. She was great and just listened without interjection or advice unless I asked. She had the best stories and advice when I asked. Sure I'm not a 'nostalgia is so much better' person...but I'll bite there was something about the way that an old school sports box score could paint a picture in your mind before every minute or inning of sports was televised.
