How to act at a corporate job?

Don't get involved in the office bitching. If they'll talk about someone behind their back, they'll do the same to you, and if it all comes out in the wash that crowd will often throw you under the bus along with them.

It's not about the aesthetics, it's about a cohort of men targeting teens and filling their heads with dangerous rethoric about their place in the world and their attitudes to women. What is the best board/card game to get two singleton talking?

Posted by doejanedoedoedoe@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 62 comments

IpromithiusI@reddit

Are they already established board gamers? Some of the suggestions here just don't work if they are not familiar with modern games. For my pick, Just One. It is my gateway game at every event I have ran, and a great ice breaker. Give a clue to help someone guess a word, but if anyone puts the same clue the get deleted before the guesser sees them. Hitster is great too, guess the year for music, people very quickly start reminiscing about the songs and open up. Ignore the rules, just make a big timeline as a group. Trio is a great little card game about making sets and stealing cards from other people. Roll For It, if you can find a copy, is a good quick push your luck dice game. You want quick, easy to learn games to get people talking. Don't go in with anything with an actual board is my rule, people spend too much time in their own heads figuring out rules and strategies. You also don't want Warewolf or Hitler because people are not going to talk casually for fear of being 'accused' in game.

Quite often buy tech and electrical components from AliExpress. I think there's 3 or 4 phones and half a dozen tablets in the family now from there, lots of zigbee smart home sensors, lots of ESP32 boards and individual components for custom sensors etc.

Labs don't have the inbuilt prey drive you recognise in your own animal. Your arrogance is staggering. Turn the tables, if someone had an XL Bully off lead and it slaughtered your dog, you'd be beside yourself and calling for the owner the be strung up. Just because it's a cat doesn't make it any less loved. 'it's never done it befote' is the argument all the Bully owners give when they have killed people. Your partner is right and you need a good long look in a mirror.

Bought a rubbish TCL tv because it was cheap... doesn't have an app for freeview and have to use an aerial for it (no chance of that working where I am) - what's the best option to get freeview these days? Firestick?

What are the unspoken rules of workplace etiquette in the UK that newcomers often miss?

The correct answer to 'How's things?' is 'Not bad, you?', knowing they will say the same back. You could have just lost your entire family, or won the lottery, the answer is always 'Not bad'. In the case of a lottery win I'd also accept 'All good'.

What do I do if my neighbour is harassing me about parking?

Posted by Burnatheburner@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 453 comments

IpromithiusI@reddit

Next time she knocks you need to be firm, clear and authoritative that you will park where you are able to legally, and that you do not want her back complaining or leaving you notes. Make it clear that it's bordering harassment and whilst she may mean well, it's unwanted. If it continues, involve the police. As tedious as it sounds for them, they'll attend and give her a talking to.

Someone stole money from me, will the police do anything?

Posted by Ok_Explanation_8111@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 77 comments

IpromithiusI@reddit

There is absolutely zero chance that for £880 with a whiff of civil case involvement that any UK police force is going to spend anything other than logging a crime reference number for this. Frauds worth thousands that are entirely UK based are being routinely NFA'd. Thats the practical state of things currently, there are not the resources to investigate and prosecute this level of crime.

Can High Court Enforcement require someone to prove a car does not belong to them or they will seize it? Ownership of a vehicle seems like it should be easy enough for the government to prove.

Posted by warrensussex@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 49 comments

IpromithiusI@reddit

There is no database of who owns cars. There is the Registered Keeper, but this isn't always the owner; the V5C form for the Registered Keeper states as much in big bold text across the top. It's like any other possession, the gov doesn't know who owns each xbox for instance.

how will min wage work when i turn 18?

Posted by LetterheadMassive598@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 17 comments

IpromithiusI@reddit

Others are incorrect here, you don't automatically get it from the day you turn 18. Minimum wage rises and birthday breaks apply beginning on the next pay cycle after the anniversary. If you were paid on the 31st of Jan and broke an age bracket on the 1st of Feb, and you were paid monthly, Febs pay would be at the old rate. If you were paid weekly then the first week would be at the old rate. Annoyingly they seem to have amended my usual .gov link on this to drop this tidbit, but it's how it has always worked, a lot of people get paid on say the 25th March so when the NMW goes up in 1st April, they dont actually see that rate kick in until the 25th April. Your boss can chose to ignore this and pay you more form your birthday, but doesn't have to until after your next pay period.

I think it'd be the top story on BBC for 6 hours before some more earthly drama overtakes it. Nobody would stop what they are doing, there would be no mass watching of anything. The world is too disillusioned with everything. I'm 38 and I've lived through what, 5 once in a lifetime events now? 95% of people would give it a mild read at best.

What's your experience with cheap plug-in solar panels?

Posted by rosetoesnose@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 54 comments

IpromithiusI@reddit

In theory I don't see why not at a core level, however I believe the micro inverters need power coming in to let them know the 'grid' is up and it's safe to feed power. If the grid is down and they continued feeding power, it would flow up stream and give anyone working on the lines a nice surprise as I understand it, maybe not past your house, but definitely within your own. It's why full solar setups have to go through a twist isolator, so anyone working on the home electrics can isolate the power input. The theory with the plug in inverters is someone is bound to forget and not unplug them, or someone will bodge them direct into a power ring and shock the electrician. Requiring in input voltage to enable export in theory should stop this happening.

You need extra hardware for that, even a sta daed solar/battery system won't work in a power cut without the extra kit with isn't installed as standard. Ems I think it's called?

IpromithiusI@reddit

You just plug them in to any available 3 pin socket, like any other appliance. It is a bit of a bizarre thought sending in through a route that has always been out, but power flows both ways. As I understand it the micro inverter in the panels can detect if there is a power cut and stop feeding in if there is one.

I think there is nuance though, there's little tangible benefit I can see from slinging a few round the moon again. What is there new to learn that couldn't be achieved with a much simpler, cheaper non manned mission? Surely that's what half the point of all the advancements have meant? What's the actual, tangible benefit of a moon or Mars base, that again you couldn't do remote? We are chucking hundreds of billions after vanity projects and 'saving mankind as a species' instead of spending it here, fixing the problems we have created and actually improving mankinds lot. That money could be plowed into renewable research, cancer research etc. And yes, I know some of those subjects are researched in a space setting, I hold a huge interest inphysics and space. But right now man, it's a tough pill to swallow pissing a bunch of people on a dick waving flight when that money could be going into fusion or other clean energy and actually having some prospect of helping. But no, instead they want to shove it up Elons arse so he can pretend he's going to put AI data centres in orbit..

The vast majority of people wouldn't give a shit if they were landing on mars let alone the moon. With the state of the world and the price of everything currently it's a hard pill to swallow, billions spent on something that will have no bearing on the lives of anyone here currently, doubly so if it's a spaceX venture and further lining that twats pockets.
