How many of you drive vehicles that are 20 years old or older?

2007 Honda and same year Tacoma, so almost. Our newest car is a 2013… I refuse to pay current gouged prices. If one of our cars dies we’ll probably pick up a 6-7 yo Highlander.

Would you pay $3k to fix a car thats worth $8k?

I'm 6ft 200+ and the Fit is fine, it’s deceptively big inside. I actually have three across narrow car seats in the back for my kids 😂 we tested a lot of other compacts when we bought this thing new, and it had an order of magnitude better space management inside. My wife and I can be in the front and fit two BIG adults in the back without them hitting their knees, I think they figured out the Harry Potter expansion charm with this thing. That being said, I do prefer my Tacoma unless I'm in town or doing errands/parking lots, haha.

Exactly. Would I drop $3k on a 10yo Explorer with 180k? lol no But I did just drop $2k on a 20yo Honda Fit with 250k for a bunch of cumulative stuff it needed (brakes, water pump, belt, etc). Still shifts good and doesn’t lose fluids so 🤷‍♂️

Does putting the parking brake on before putting the car in park do anything?

WA here…these real summers are killing me. And we went from a season when wildfires “could” happen, to a season when the whole f*+cking state is on fire and you have to run homemade box fan air filters in your house for clean air. SUPER FUN. Seriously miss having a mild 2 week summer.

Started doing 8-10k steps a day (2+ miles tracked walks in addition to normal steps), regained this ability in less than 6 months. I can also tie a shoe standing on one leg now as well 😂

I lost a bunch of weight and my back pain changed. It didn’t go away, it just changed. On a related note, starting to budget for bifocals…be nice if I could find my actual glasses though. Oh, they were on my head. Probably shouldn’t have any water after dinner, don’t want to have to get up and pee tonight.

What's a car from any point in history, you wish they still sold brand new today, that you would scoop one up right away if they did? What makes that car so special?

I had an ‘82 Mazda B2200 5spd. It had a fairly long bed, and most importantly a Perkins diesel engine. To be clear, it was not “fast”, but it would do highway speed no problem and got 40mpg and had a fairly large tank (forget size, but it would go 500-600 on a tank). Also towed an AE86 like 30 miles on a car dolly with that thing once.

Things we had to learn in school that are completely useless now

You have to drive from Alaska to Argentina in order to save the world, which car are you choosing?

InfiniteBoops@reddit

I was going to say 1988 4Runner with a 22RE but you might have to outrun some people or power through stuff quickly….so a newer Tacoma with the 4.0 and an Automatic, canopy and a few spare tires on wheels in the back. With high end full synthetic should be able to make the entire trip with zero maintenance. Let’s add on an auxiliary fuel tank where the spare usually goes, I think you can get them with like 30gal capacity, that will give like 600-700+ range.

You can assemble your dream garage for free. But you’re limited to 16 total cylinders/pistons. What are you filling it with?

InfiniteBoops@reddit

All the rotarys. Rotary swap a bunch of things 😂 I’m thinking a 4 Rotor Tacoma X-Runner drift truck among other things… Once those loophole exploits are all in place… new Lexus TX PHEV for the misses, Tacoma Trail-hunter Hybrid for myself, a Focus RS, and a little Kei truck (pretty sure those are often 2cyl).

For those without children, do you worry about the future?

Seriously. If I’m on the verge of going into an expensive care home, me and the cheapest car in my stable are taking a long drive off a short cliff 😂 Mostly kidding, but the thought of giving a lifetimes worth of work and earnings to a for profit care network owned by equity bros so that I can spend a few years shitting myself and bring visited once or twice disgusts me.

I was able to afford for myself and my fiancé to live making well under $20/hr 20 or so years ago. You need to make $25-30/hr just to pay *rent* now. And it’s not “normal inflation”, it’s 100% corporate greed and funds maximizing profits in previously private sectors (homes, construction/maintenance companies, vets, healthcare in general, etc).

Fellow Xennials: in general, do you prefer talking on the phone or would you rather text?

Yep. Sometimes I’ll get halfway into typing out a text and realize not only is it going to be longer than I thought, but any follow up replies will probably be long as well. At that point, I call 😂

I've been driving for over 40 years and just realized that I have never run out of gas. When was the last time you ran out of gas if ever?

One time, old 80’s Camaro. Was able to coast into the far end of a gas station parking lot, buddy and I pushed it to a pump. Had $10 between us, so we were nearly able to fill it up 😄

What car is the biggest disappointment performance-wise compared to its styling? i.e. cars that look like performance cars but are not.

Honda Fit…underpowered tiny people move, way worse MPG than the much faster (in comparison) Corolla and Civic. Sidenote, those two also get better mileage than those tiny smartcars.

What’s the most “redneck engineering” thing you’ve ever done to fix your car?

Posted by SnooChocolates6278@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 528 comments

InfiniteBoops@reddit

You can fix nearly any exhaust hanger problem with a metal coat hanger and a pair of pliers. The best part is if you do it properly, it will probably last the life of the car if it’s an older beater. I always had a small spool of wire and pliers in my little trunk tool kit, and used wire or hangers to fix quite a few exhausts on my fiends and my cars in my younger years.

Did you play on one of these as a kid?

Posted by coloradotaxguy@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 728 comments

InfiniteBoops@reddit

Not only when I was a kid, but there was one across the street from our current house at the school. They tore it down like a year after we had our first kid because they couldn’t “maintain it”. Having it across the street was legit on our Pro’s list for the house when we bought it. Big sad.

Pandemic as a Demarcation Point

The pandemic shown a spotlight on how effed up and corrupt the people in power are. Further, unregulated (let’s be real, they run the government) corporate overlords used it as an excuse to price gauge to a level we’ve never seen before. People that went into the pandemic middle class and still have decent jobs can’t afford rent, they can’t afford food, I think things are going to come a head sooner than later here. I also feel like I’ve aged a decade, but then again we’ve had three kids since 2019 so 🤷‍♂️😂

Me a finance major only reading the title: Yeah I haven’t had to dip into them yet, was able to make it through the holidays just having to shave a bit off the money market accou… oh, music. Yeah, still have them. My not-new Tacoma actually has a multi disc cd player so I have that full of my favorites.

Anyone just resentful?

Posted by No_Historian718@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 444 comments

InfiniteBoops@reddit

Super resentful. The boomers literally ruined the economy, continue to do so (elected officials), and to an extent kind of ruined the world. Of all the living generations from Greatest to Alpha, they are far and above the most egocentric on average. That being said, you can’t stop playing the game. I lucked out by finding my now wife of over 15 years early on. She had drive, I had a bit, but that was it. Now we’re kind of good. House, savings, 3 under 4 (I said kind of 😆).

Sick of people driving at night with high beams on. Do you think it’s a good idea to cover the back of my car with reflective tape? Is it legal, obviously asking for a friend.

I had a light bar on my old Toyota 4x4. One of the KC Daylighters was pointed backwards a few car lengths behind the truck. They were very bright, that’s all I’m saying.

What is a car you've owned that you liked so much you'd buy the same car again?

Posted by Blu_yello_husky@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 3747 comments

InfiniteBoops@reddit

I had an old Toyota 4x4 for like 15 years. Completely impractical with kids, but I loved it. 5 speed, good vantage point, not fast enough to get in trouble, went for 400k before selling it to someone that’s still bombing around in it. Currently have an ‘07 Taco and it is not even close to the same feeling.

Opinion: I've owned a Plaid for 6 months now, it's the best and worst car I've ever owned

My old 87’ Toyota 4x4 5spd with a carbureted 22R was a hoot. It was loud, had like 130ftlb, and was geared well for town. It felt ‘quick’ up until about 35-40, which was enough for commuting and city. My new Tacoma has more than twice as much power, and I can tell it’s in another class, but it’s not nearly as fun.

Stellantis and GM Paid $363 Million For Not Hitting U.S. Fuel Economy Requirements

Posted by besselfunctions@reddit | cars | View on Reddit | 381 comments

InfiniteBoops@reddit

Everyone stopped making cars in favor of SUVs and CUVs. Trucks that were selling for $30-35k 5 years ago (base) have essentially a metal canopy welded on, and about $3-5k in fancier materials/seats, and a $20-40k increase in price. They only need an extra $10k in margin on 35,000 vehicles to pay that fine. All total napkin math, but seriously, margins on these SUVs and trucks are insane. Add: just googled it, totally on point, 10k or more per truck, probably more for SUVs. Why sell a Fiesta that gets 35-40mpg and make a few grand tops when you can get idiots to pay $80k for a decked out half ton pickup or Suburban?

Any car enthusiasts here driving a basic economy car?

I’ve got an ‘07 Fit auto with over 200k. Last was a 30 yo Toyota 4x4 22R 5spd. I love cars, used to have an AE86 and a Camaro. I’ve watched all 20+ seasons of Top Gear multiple times, really racing, etc. Follow a dozen or more auto related YT channels, read Jalopnik and a handful of other car related sites. I just have other priorities that don’t allow for cars as a $$$ hobby. Kids, house, dogs, saving for retirement, none would be better facilitated by one of those new GR Toyotas or an Ariel Atom in the garage.
