Sick of people driving at night with high beams on. Do you think it’s a good idea to cover the back of my car with reflective tape? Is it legal, obviously asking for a friend.

The problem is 1)they are carrying a load and squatting the back to raise the beam 2) they're putting hid/led replacement bulbs into light housings that aren't designed for them and don't have the correct focus 3) some kind of wonky damage caused this When I drove trucks I had to hook my trailer up with a load and then adjust my headlights. Without my trailer my lights were pointing down. There's road eddicate that you never use your brights if you see any car in front of you, whether going in your direction or the opposite

1. I had a b5.5 passat that would automatically adjust the headlights if I had a load in the back so it wasn’t blinding. How the fuck does a modern truck not have that? That’s a 20+ year old car

Or someone with a truck that tucked with their offset settings and don’t understand there is a specific legal way to set the throw properly. My younger sisters boyfriend did this cause he thought “they were set wrong at factory and would work much better/longer distance if he angled them upwards”.

Yeah fk those people. Should be a law that headlights cannot be higher than X inches from the road

Slightly less stupid looking alternative: If you get your windows tinted, you will almost never be blinded by high beams again. Even at 30%, it will help drastically.

To be fair most of the newer vehicles have such bright lights from the factory it looks like high beams when it’s not. But regardless I know how bad it sucks to see the sun in your rear view, both side view mirrors and the shadow of your vehicle in front of you.

Haha I know the feeling. Most trucks (like mine either no lift) are so high from the factory that people can’t tell the difference and flash their brights at me. People don’t realize that if fog lights are on high beams are not on (unless you have a programmer than changes this)
View on Reddit #13295438

PacketFiend@reddit

It's irrelevant. If people are flashing their high beams at you, *your headlights are too bright, high beams or not.*

Short of “registering a complaint” there’s not much you can do if your 100 percent stock car is blinding someone.
View on Reddit #13301394

SoManySNs@reddit

You can adjust the height of your headlights
View on Reddit #13302564

RunninOnMT@reddit

If your car is stock, they come adjusted according to government regulations from the factory. If you raise your ride height you need to get them adjusted. If it’s stock ride height, you may be better about blinding other people if you adjust them, but it’s really the Wild West at that point. You are disregarding regulations about where they SHOULD be pointed.
View on Reddit #13306827

Confident_Season1207@reddit

I'm pretty sure they're not aiming them. Supposedly there was a study that proved that
View on Reddit #13320407

Tesla's are notorious for having insanely bright headlights that are pointed too high from the factory. I got pulled over for it when my brights weren't on.
View on Reddit #13358484

Wigberht_Eadweard@reddit

Something I just learned about teslas recently is that the high beams are put on automatically when autopilot is used, and I believe you have to go through a menu to turn them off, so that’s why so many people driving teslas always have their high beams on
View on Reddit #13412982

rideincircles@reddit

Not exactly Yes, they are automatic when using autopilot but you can turn it off easily with the stalk. I usually disable auto brights if I am in the city. This is not the issue. It does sound like tesla's headlights are aimed too high out of the factory. They is a setting to adjust in the menus.

Right? The problem is your factory solar flair headlights are dangerously bright. Oncoming traffic cannot see the road or lane markers. They adjust for a reason.
View on Reddit #13330386

dunncrew@reddit

You can adjust them down a bit.
View on Reddit #13310723

RunninOnMT@reddit

Adjusting them down from where they came from the factory (with a stock ride height) sounds dangerous for different reasons. There’s a spec for these things for a reason. Lift your car and they will be out of spec and you will need to re-aim them.
View on Reddit #13315412

dunncrew@reddit

Our Hyundai came with them too low. Could barely see anything, so I raised them up a bit. Can't assume they were set correctly at the factory every time.
View on Reddit #13316864

PacketFiend@reddit

While I agree that there's not much most people can do, flashing high beams at overly bright headlights is the only way to tell people their headlights are too bright. It's not that I'm getting angry with the driver - it's more that I'm communicating to them that their headlights are dangerously bright and blinding other drivers. If people buying these cars complain enough to the manufacturers, then maybe, just maybe, something will get done. If a "100% stock" vehicle blinds other drivers with its headlights, it is an unsafe vehicle and should not be road legal. Agreed though that the blame lies with the manufacturers, not purchasers.
View on Reddit #13302386

MarcusBattle527@reddit

Irrelevant or not this is YOUR OPINION and that’s ok. But there is no way in hell I would expect anyone to try (not possible on most modern and newer vehicle) to modify their headlights to make them dimmer. One new (not a pair) headlamp assembly can run north of $1k. So of someone has OEM headlamps that are too bright that’s too bad in my book.
View on Reddit #13304038

dunncrew@reddit

Headlights should be adjustable. Our car has a phillips head screw adjustment. Shine them against a wall and turn the screw to make them go down. You will see the liggt beam move.
View on Reddit #13310916

MarcusBattle527@reddit

Man modern cars do not have manually adjustable headlights. Many newer vehicles have auto leveling suspension and auto leveling lamps.
View on Reddit #13311024

PacketFiend@reddit

And therein lies the problem - people who think it's acceptable to blind other drivers. It isn't. Not for any reason. Not ever. That said, I do agree that it's not realistic to expect everyone who buys a vehicle like this to then spend $1k on adjusting their headlights. The problem is the manufacturers and a lack of regulation. (Also my opinion). I do wish people getting told their lights are too bright would complain to whomever they bought the car from. That might help.

People that lower their car too. Most cars sit a little higher in the rear than the front, and most lowering kits lower the rear more than the front, something like 1” lower in front, and 1.5” lower in the rear. Now the headlights are pointed more upward, aka, blinding people.

There’s a lot of people driving with their high beams on though, it’s not just brighter factory lights. There’s still a lot of cars on the road with separate headlights for low beam and high beam, two totally different bulbs in different spots, so it’s pretty obvious if it’s high beams or not, and there’s a lot of people with their high beams on. My car is a 2019 and has separate highs and lows, so it’s plenty of newer-ish cars, not just old cars.
View on Reddit #13322297

tunerguy137@reddit

Absolutely^^ from personal experience, most high beam bulbs are closer to the grille and the low beam bulbs are on the fender side of the assembly. Always easy to tell when someone has their brights on in these cars. Few, yet some, share a single bulb for both high and low beam, assuming it's a change in voltage that switches the brightness. Little trickier there, wondering if their lights are super bright or if theyre running the hi beams. OR, something I haven't seen in the thread yet, the dash symbols. The blue symbol is the high beams and green is low. Fairly positive this is also standardized across all vehicles, but curious how common this knowledge is..
View on Reddit #40649392

You can adjust your headlights yourself with nothing but a screwdriver and a piece of cardboard for most cars. Look up how to adjust them on your car on YouTube, it’s very simple.

You assume they're incorrectly adjusted, or that it's even that simple. Many new cars it's complicated and difficult to adjust, and some like Tesla, cannot be adjusted at home afaik, and are EXTREMELY bright. Mad assumptions over here.

View on Reddit #13320347

I look at things a different way. Let me explain. Within the United States, there is not a uniform law or rule on the color of emergency vehicle lights. It should be that police is blue. Fire and EMS is red etc. I also can't think of any uniform law that has minimum and maximums for low and high beam headlights. From conventional bulbs to LEDs to projector type headlights, there's a wide variance and there are light bulbs that are marketed like Sylvania SilverStar and others that base their sales purely on the intensity and the amount of lumens that the light has. And people buy those in a free market capitalist economy. Maybe that is a better solution.
View on Reddit #13314825

PetroVMondo@reddit

We used to have this. There was once only two kinds of standardized sealed-beam lights that were legal. Some people cheated with airplane landing lights, and you still could aim them wrong.. but it was much better than what we have now, with us getting blinded all the time.

Trucks like yours make it impossible for some people to see if pedestrians are in the road, in some cases to see if they can safely merge, sometimes even to see the road. If everybody is flashing you get more reasonable, less bright bulbs and aim them down- you're blinding them. This is assuming you care about other people in the first place, of course.

What do you propose the solution is? Should we purposely fuck up our headlights to dim them? What’s your solution, scuff them up with sandpaper and ruin them? Should we purposely aim them at the ground and cause an accident because now we can’t see? Should we get some shitty smoked covers or spray some transparent tinted shit on them and risk getting tickets just because you’re sensitive? Every driver’s ed class teaches that when oncoming headlights are bright, you should look down at the road in the direction of the fog line away from the oncoming car. I took driver’s ed 30 years ago and I still remember that key learning, and I still use it, and it works for me no matter how bright the oncoming lights are. Bright headlights don’t bother me. Maybe you should go back and retake drivers ed. You have obviously forgotten some basic shit.

See this thread: https://reddit.com/r/Truckers/comments/qyulfy/apologies_i_am_not_a_trucker_but_i_figure_you/ Also consider if you might have astigmatism. Everyone sees those stars. Some see it worse than others. There's no good way to quantify it. Also, astigmatism just means the lens in the eye isn't perfectly symmetrical, so technically all eyes have it at least a little bit, just some don't have a measurable/correctable amount.

View on Reddit #13289990

VibrantPianoNetwork@reddit

There's reflective and there's reflective. The reflective surfaces I see on most vehicles wouldn't make any difference to me, either. They only help to see the vehicle. They do pretty much nothing to bounce glare back. What's needed is **retro**\-reflective surfaces, which bounce light back to its source. And the best kind of that is so-called **prismatic** retro-reflective tape, which you can find. (So far, I've found it only in white, but I really don't care about the colour.) I believe there is also paint you can get with the same properties.
View on Reddit #13360505

chrisk365@reddit

We just say “reflective.” It means retro-reflective. Like when you say “microwave” and no one goes “ackshually you mean microwave *oven*.”
View on Reddit #13464414

VibrantPianoNetwork@reddit

To explain a little more fully, 'reflective' only means that the surface reflects light. A mirror is an example of a very highly reflective surface, but a mirror, like most reflective surfaces, reflects at an opposite angle to the vector of the incoming ray. It does not reflect it back towards the source, unless the ray comes in at an angle tight (acute) enough to have that result. Scattering will still make the surface visible, but most of the incoming light goes off in directions other than the incoming vector. A **retro**\-reflective surface reflects back at many or all angles, such that a higher proportion of the incoming light is reflected back at the source.

You must live in the city. It's super important where I live to drive with high beams on at night so you can see deer on the side of the road or coming out of the woods before they suicide run out in front of you. Obviously you shut them off if another vehicle is in front of you or coming towards you. I can't drive down my road this time of year without slowing down at least 5 times because deer run out in front of me.

View on Reddit #13467109

Helpinmontana@reddit

Do you mean anyone who needs high beams at all? If you don’t, ignore this. If you do- High beams aren’t necessarily brighter (though usually are), they’re aimed higher to project further down the road. At 60ish MPH (depending on your lights and vehicle) your stopping distance is far greater than the distance illuminated by your low beams. You *need* high beams to drive fast at night safely. This is why numerous western states have high speed limits (70-85mph) but lower night time speed limits, because even with decent high beams, 80mph stopping distances are greater than your headlight projection distance, so if you see something you’re basically guaranteed to hit it.

On an old Porsche 944 I had years ago, I had Cibie H4 reflectors replacing the stock sealed beams, and a 12AWG relay harness wired direct to the back of the alternator, and a Transpo voltage regulator that was adjusted to \~13.7V (why German cars of that era ran their alternators at such low voltage I do not know.) I installed some 60/100W off-road bulbs in them (a regular, legal-in-Europe bulb would be 55 watt low beam, 60 watt high beam) which was the only part of this modification that would have been illegal in a European country (the headlights themselves are only legal for motorcycles in the US because of reasons that make sense to nobody.) The main reason for this mod was a) the stock wiring was causing over 1V drop from the alternator to the headlights and b) at the time, part of my commute was on a completely unlit, windy 2-lane road. After finishing this work, I was no longer limited by how far I could see, because I could never not see to the next corner. This is the only car I've ever driven where a quick flick of the high beams would encourage an oncoming Maryland driver to dip their headlights. However, on low beam, they were less glaring than the old sealed beams because of the sharp cutoff of the ECE beam pattern. Really a nice setup and because I wasn't a douche and didn't deploy the brights in public, I never got hassled for it in the \~7 years I drove that car daily.

You have to dim them; according to law. “High beams must be dimmed when approaching traffic is within 500 feet. High beams must be dimmed when following within 200 feet of another vehicle.” Florida Statute 316.238 covers the rules of high beam use. Under this statute, it is illegal to drive with your high beams on. Other states have similar laws to Florida but all states follow the dimming rules when there's other vehicles around. While people driving with high beams on is super annoying, it isn’t always the case, and attempting to “retaliate” isn’t helpful when someone can’t control it. First example I have is when I owned a Range Rover. Something about their light setup made people think I had my brights on all the time. Usually I would get high beams flashed at me, I would flash mine back and that would be the end of it. Another example is Tesla, especially the Model Y (we have one too and never noticed while driving it). I believe it has something to do with their crap quality control at the factory but the lights tend to have more likelihood of being angled a little high which makes them appear like brights. Being aggressive or trying to blind someone is never a good idea. Doing it to someone who has no control over the situation in that moment is much worse. Your response to an annoyance could cause an accident with a much worse outcome.

They aren’t driving with their high beams on. LED lights are just that much brighter. If they’re coming from behind, you need to adjust your rear view mirror. Most mirrors have a position that dims the lights coming from the rear, or has the ability to do so electronically . If you have the manual kind, rotate it vertically up or down and you should feel it snap into position. Brighter images for daytime, dimmer for night. If they’re coming toward you, you can try flashing your lights, but you’ll probably get flashed back because they’re actually using their low beams. Best thing to do is divert your gaze to the right and down (looking at the edge of the road or lane markings temporarily to avoid getting blinded A lot of cars have an automatic high beam setting that will dim their lights when they are within certain distances of other cars or reflective surfaces; or if their speed drops below 15-20 mph

So long as your reflective tape doesn't impress your vision or endanger other drivers in any way I see no issue here. They put reflective material on the back of all sorts of commercial vehicles to improve visibility of their bumper.

Flip the rear view mirror so it dims everything. If you’re getting bright lights in your eye from your side mirrors by a car in your lane behind you then those mirrors aren’t set up right to begin with, adjust them outwards so you see the lanes beside you, not directly behind you. The reflective tape will affect people who are driving even with normal lights, especially on hills and such.
View on Reddit #13313919

Danger_Dave4G63@reddit

Yes exactly, most people adjust their mirrors incorrectly. There is no such thing as a blind spot. Your mirrors are just not adjusted correctly. You shouldn't be able to see any part of the side of the vehicle in your mirror.

So your vehicles not have that nifty night time flip the switch mirror thingy? Why is this such an issue for people. A car with bright lights is behind you flip the little doohickey and keep driving. If a car is behind you and you are being blinded with your side mirrors then your mirrors are adjusted wrong. You shouldn't see lights in that mirror until that car has switched lanes to pass you hopefully on the left because you wouldn't be getting passes in the right because your driving slow in a left lane.

I have an old low sports car too and have stopped driving at night because it’s not fun anymore. 20+ years ago I had no problem driving around all night with friends, but these new LEDs just suck to the point where I can’t even see where I’m driving if a tall enough car is right behind me and their bright lights are reflecting off my mirrors and illuminating my cabin which makes it even harder to see ahead of me. My headlights aren’t especially bright either. Love driving my baby at daytime though!

View on Reddit #13333762

Tea-Usual@reddit

Keep a very bright flash light with a long throw and let them go in front of you then light up their rear view. If they're in front of you then you want to flash them directly in the face. Both of these techniques are just to let them know their high beams are on for safety reasons of course.
View on Reddit #13332562

crazyhamsales@reddit

The headlights on most modern vehicles seem to be so bright that people think you're using the high beams when you're not. Been there, though ok I should check and make sure it's aimed right and had it checked out by a shop that has a computer aiming system for headlights, it was a body shop and the tech was a stickler for accuracy. He said they were within spec but he made them the best he could. Regardless two days later I had someone oncoming flash their brights, so I flashed mine back as a hey I'm already on low beams... Completely stock, OEM bulbs, nothing modified etc. I think a lot of people are too used to the old yellow headlights we used to have, but the modern cool white lights look super bright by comparison.
View on Reddit #13331644

soup_cow@reddit

My rear view mirror has a "night mode" just for that purpose. It's just a little tab you pull forward. I also will adjust my side mirrors to reflect back if they won't turn their brights off.
View on Reddit #13330804

thebigbrog@reddit

I leave my rear view mirror and side mirrors slightly out of alignment deliberately so that those knuckleheads with the brights behind me don’t get in my eyes. I just have to raise my head slightly or slightly look extra right or left when I want to look in my mirror. Now I only have to deal with high beams from the front.
View on Reddit #13329057

FortunateSuns@reddit

There is a quick pivot function in the rear view mirror for a reason. It's designed that way so if you flip it the position should show you a "reduced light" rear image. It's more of the reflection of the lights rather than the direct light itself. Try it 👍

The vast majority of the time people think others are driving around with high beams on they are not, the people just are not used to cars with modern lighting. Ive have had auto on/off high beams in my vehicles since 2015. Many moons ago I had a '69 Cutlass that had 4 headlights. Two were high and two were low beam, until I got my hands on it anyway. I managed to get 4 reflectors that would fit and were DESIGNED to accept/properly reflect hi/low beam bulbs. I aimed the outer pair of lights normally, the inner pair I aimed a little bit down and slightly to the right. All four operated as normal, except I ran the control wires to trigger a set of relays that put battery directly to the lamps.
