Can you still put your socks on while standing up?

No one told me this would be such a struggle. 😅 At least it has me stretching daily!

Hell yes and turning 70 in August I also put my foot on shower wall abovemywaist to shave my legs

I can, and do.

Yes, and in fact I use it as a sort of daily ritual to keep myself going
View on Reddit #60341734

And I also challenge myself to stand from the chair without using my hands to push myself up. Being over 50 is great fun!

That’s one good prep for anyone who will someday have open heart surgery.

Yes, this and standing up without using the help of your arms. I can stand from a crossed legged position on the floor using only my legs. I can stand from a couch using only 1 leg. These small things keep us strong and flexible.
View on Reddit #60355630

yourworkmom@reddit

Smart. I tell people to get on the floor daily. When my Dad was old, he couldn't get up when he fell, which he sometimes did after his stroke. Had to wear a necklace call button thing.
View on Reddit #60400345

Dangerous_Abalone528@reddit

I sit on the floor regularly partly to maintain my ability to get off the floor unassisted.

Me too. I’ve seen so many older relatives and some younger ones have serious injuries that require surgery, from poor balance. I make sure my balance is something I work on daily.

I’ve got a list of PT exercises keeping me going. Balance is life now.
View on Reddit #60345965

thumpngroove@reddit

I do, too. In fact, I have a more advanced routine. Stand and put one sock on, and while still balancing, reach down and put that shoe on. Then, repeat on the other side. I’ve found balancing on the shoe foot is harder. I used to be able to complete this about 90% of the time without touching the other foot down, but, sadly, it has gone down to less than 50% or even worse, as I’ve aged. But I keep trying!
View on Reddit #60345126

WinGoose1015@reddit

Yes! I do the same thing. I feel like it’s a barometer for balance and strength. I lift 3-4 days a week because I’m determined to be strong and independent for as long as possible (barring accidents or other injuries) I also do the ‘cross legged on the floor to standing with no hands’ regularly. Another good test to measure how I’m doing.
View on Reddit #60354802

itsmebrian@reddit

Exactly. And every so often, I'll challenge myself by putting on a sock and a shoe (and tiny it up) without putting my for down followed by a repeat for the other side.
View on Reddit #60352217

cbrworm@reddit

Me too. A few times a week I'll put my shoes and socks on while standing just to do it. My kids think I'm goofy.

No, but I get a new hip in two days.
View on Reddit #60341747

LarrySDonald@reddit

I’ve replaced a hip, and can now put my socks on standing up. I usually don’t, but I can. I couldn’t prior to replacing, and a month or so after, I couldn’t put my socks on at all (wife did it). Hopefully you have similar results.
View on Reddit #60388321

Expensive-Function16@reddit

Thanks! I hope so as well. The pain right now is horrible, so I am looking forward to having that go away.
View on Reddit #60407945

LarrySDonald@reddit

Yeah. Honestly, the surgery seems extreme, but the most painful part was really before the surgery. I understand this is typical. I wouldn’t say there’s *zero* pain, nor 100% mobility, but lightyears better than going in.
View on Reddit #60429376

Expensive-Function16@reddit

Doc just came in for my pre-op. They did a full waist x-ray and he said my other hip looks worse. Good news is that it doesn’t hurt yet, so I have some time, but eventually it will need replacing as well. Getting old is fun
View on Reddit #60524779

LarrySDonald@reddit

They said the same thing about my it hip. It became a lot better after doing one though (prob offloading it a bit). Then my heart stopped, so after that I put it off some, and then I lost insurance.

View on Reddit #60566697

Jebgogh@reddit

Putting on socks was the final straw that made me get my hip done. The strain and pain was like a religious experience - I would be out of breath and light headed by the time I got them on. Go into the surgery with a good attitude and know it will suck for about 2 weeks. I am so much better Definitely take the PT serious- start walking and moving as soon as you can. Good luck

Well that’s why I do it, I don’t want my old age life to be harder than it has to be. Balance is everything when you get old. It’s part of staying upright healthy. You have good balance, you’re much less likely to fall. You don’t fall, you don’t break hips and legs and stuff. Breaking bones, especially hips, is a quick slide to a difficult old age.
View on Reddit #60351992

DuckyDoodleDandy@reddit

Just FYI, you don’t “fall and break your hip”; it’s the reverse. You break your hip and then fall because you broke your hip. Balance is so good for helping keep bones strong tho.
View on Reddit #60409929

Sothdargaard@reddit

I work in surgery. After 65 the life expectancy of someone who fell and broke a hip is 1.5 more years. That's even if they get hip replacement surgery. Work on your balance fellow GenXers.
View on Reddit #60376709

T_Noctambulist@reddit

I still have more than 20 years to meet your requirement and have never broken a hip but this really scares me. Blowing an acl in my late 20s was devastating, I'm not invincible anymore. Seeing is a stat that says do this = dead in a year is so much worse

Balance is important.
View on Reddit #60383757

cricket_bacon@reddit

> Balance is important. Sure. But it isn't easy for everyone. I had asthma, bad allergies, and ear infections as a kid... all that impacts the ability to balance. Unfortunately I have never had very good balance. I do exercise, I run 10Ks, I eat a healthy and balanced diet. The last time I tried to put my socks on while standing was back in 2003 in a shower trailer in Kuwaiti desert a few days before the invasion. Had to lean my back against the wall. Got the job done, but, all things being equal, I would rather focus on other challenges.

View on Reddit #60410296

This is something some physical therapists do for stroke patients. A trainer I follow said her FIL, who had had a stroke, asked her if she could put her socks on standing up and she said, "Of course! Can't everybody?!" And he told her no- that's one of the exercise they have me working on to build up balance and strength. So, I tried to do it and I can, but I do wobble a little bit. I keep meaning to do this more often, too.

I do quite frequently, along with pants or shorts, and either lace up or slip on shoes. The more you use abilities like that the longer you will retain them. If you want to get better with stuff like that look into Yoga classes, or get a balance pad or balance board and start practicing balance at home. Balance is a major issue for a lot of people when they get old and I do not intend to have to deal with a broken hip at any point. I am fighting to retain every last shred of capability I can as long as I can. I plan on running into the cemetery and sliding into my grave after the last attendees for my funeral arrive and take their seat.

I put my socks and shoes on standing up. I like to wear Vans Sk8 hi shoes, and I hate loosening the laces. I slip my socks on, then my shoe as far as it will go. I then have to put the shoe on the floor and press down to get my foot into it. It’s a pain, but I have narrow heels and the ankle height gives me something to tighten around my body to keep the shoe on. My wife laughs at me, wondering why I do it that way. She can’t do, and I use it to see how my balance is holding up.

yes. This is a pretty good test re: balance/flexibility which declines over time if you're not active. it's shocking how fast we can lose balance, flexibility and ultimately, mobility if you continue to live a sedentary life in the golden years.

Sure, no problem. Shoes too. One of the most upsetting things my mom ever told me about aging - perhaps second only to 'what do you mean women bleed every month?!' - was 10 or 11 years ago when she was watching me put on my shoes. "You can still put on your shoe while standing on the other foot? I'm not sure I still could at your age." This was a betrayal by our bodies that I had never contemplated before, and it felt like a bridge too far.

I'm 46. This post made me realize I have never put socks on while SITTING DOWN. It's actually harder for me and feels completely unnatural. My go to move is to bend my knee outward while standing (my legs look like a #4) and then put the sock on with my toes pointing towards the floor. I don't even have to bend down to do this. I have very poor hip and hamstring flexibility and if I try this while sitting, it's extremely uncomfortable.

Generally, it's good to try and keep up our balance, flexibility, core strength, etc. as we age!

Yes, and I do it just to make sure I still can.

Wait until you need compression socks. You’ll barely be able to get the darn things on when sitting down. Good times, getting older, good times.

morrismoses@reddit

I can, but why would I? That is just asking for a faceplant.
View on Reddit #60344453

I wasn't. But yoga gave me this ability back.

No

Yup. It’s a test every morning. Sock, then shoe, then tie it, all on the opposite foot.

scarlettohara1936@reddit

Proudly, yes! I've had some issues with my back in the past but have taken up yoga. The stretching and balancing poses have 100 percent helped my body. I actively go out of my way to put socks on while balancing now and again just to test my core strength. Also, I've learned, starting at 50, you should get down on the floor once a day and get back up without help just to keep those muscles strong and limber

Isn't putting socks on while standing up number 8 on the "Identifying a sociopath checklist?"
View on Reddit #60343822

I can barely put them on sitting down 🤣

Yes, thankfully, and I don’t make the “grandpa grunt” yet when I tie my shoes standing up.

F55. I recently ditched the slide in Skechers for lace up tennies specifically so I could practice this. I broke my knee last fall (while making coffee) and went to PT for rehab. Realized how bad my balance, coordination, and core strength had gotten. It’s important at our age to NOT make things to easy on ourselves.

Yeah but I have to do the figure 4. Leg muscles too strong and gargantuan.
View on Reddit #60343669

Kitchen-Employment14@reddit

Definitely yes! I also practice putting my shoes on and tying them while balancing on one foot without supporting myself. This is a great way to stay strong and flexible. An easy daily practice, like taking the stairs instead of the elevator. (For reference, I’m technically either the oldest millennial or the youngest Gen X)

I try this every morning. Some days it's easier than others, but my bedroom is pretty dark at that point so it gets tricky.
View on Reddit #60343515

beneficialmirror13@reddit

Yes, and I'm making sure to work on my balance and core strength because I don't want to be a little frail old lady who can't do anything. Yoga daily at minimum. And I make aure to get up from the floor regularly without using my hands.
View on Reddit #60343494

BuildingMaleficent11@reddit

I have to wear compression stockings now - ironically, when I was young didn’t get any varicose veins during pregnancy or after having kids - and, that is definitely a sitting down process.

Sounds like excessive effort. Sit down, relax, you deserve a break

To everyone asking why, it's to maintain your ability to balance. Leg strength and balance is what makes the difference in how we age and even life span. Try it. If you can't, it's time to add it to your daily routine. Yoga and other stretching is vital.

Never tried, because I'm not into personal risk like that. FFS, there's never been a time in my life that lasted very long before I snagged a pinky toe by trying to put a sock on too fast *while sitting*. You saying I should have tried doing that while *standing*? Idiocy.

Nope, or shoes anymore. We keep a shoe changing stool in the entryway now (no shoes inside country). But, that's mostly because I'm rocking a prosthetic leg these days which limits how far that knee bends, and my balance never was the greatest.
