RX-8. Incredible chassis. Well balanced, rigid, perfect for going sideways. But the Renesis is such a dud motor compared to the older 13B that it makes me only want to buy an RX-8 if I immediately plan to motor swap it. Which isn't a cheap endeavor.
A Subaru. So I can repeatedly destroy engines and transmissions simply to prove a point that after 30 years they still canāt figure out how to make them both reliable, and a sports car. I hate Subarus.
āā (ā Ā ā āµā Ā ā )ā ā I put 187k on my 2011 Forrester before having any major repairs. Twas my first and so far only Subaru. Sold it at 211k miles, still running. Maybe I got lucky?
Really? Been through many Subarus in my group of friends. Outback, Forester, nothing wrong with em. My girlfriend has a 15 year old outback with like 160k on the odo never in the shop aside from maintenance. This isnāt uncommon either. Wonder if itās just the BRZ or WRX that youāre referring to.
I donāt get the hate. My 2015 XV Crosstrek has been the best car Iāve owned. Transmission slipping slightly but it doesnāt even feel like it has 120k miles on it besides that.
Brz is reliable too just as long as you dont turbo it. I have 120k on mine so far. Tracked it last year and it didnt burn a drop of oil. Definitely couldn't say that about my Honda before it.
Iām over here with an Ascent with almost 115k and not one issue so far. I do keep up with all basic maintenance.
After posting this, Iāll probably end up with a blown transmission the next time I turn the car on. My luck.
I got an old Chevy Silverado with about 190K miles and it leaks like an old Harley. It will, take about a quart of oil every 2 weeks.....i just did an oil change and put Lucas in it ....so far so good . The only thing is that since i put in the Lucas, it pops up a check engine code (turns on and then turns off) that says my O2 sensor needs to be replaced.
I need to replace the gaskets .
...probably like all of them. I got some UV fluid that I am gonna drop in the oil and and get a blacklight....to see where it is leaking from the most and start from there .
Its a GM, its gonna eat oil. If it were a Ford, it'd leave it on the road, and a Dodge it would eat the transmission and then leave *that* on the road.
Is there any reason not to use Restore and Protect on a newer car? I have to believe that if it can remove buildup it should be fairly effective at preventing it as well?
I met a guy who within 20 seconds of knowing him made a joke about his ex wife, compared it to not being as bad as herpes on his member, because thats for life. I chuckled. He responded "why are you laughing, it is for life."
2010 xt forester with built motor. Itās on its 3 block lol itās a sickness. 240000kms on the chassis too so thatās also rooted. The e85 is nice at the moment being the cheapest thing at the pump.
had 5k miles on it when i bought it, sold it with 85k miles on it. this was a 2018 impreza with the upper trim, that had been a loaner car at a dealership prior to me buying it.
Most likley, drive style also plays into that, if your dailying it like a grandma itās more than likely gonna last, they are still pretty bad in general, but if you are beating on it, itāll definitely break.
i mean, it was an impreza, not sure i couldve driven it hard if i tried :P but yes it was pretty much just a commuter what id try to have fun in once in a while after a big snow fall
Impreza, Outback, Forrester, and Crosstrek all have good and bad years with a lot of good ones. BRZ and WRX have more bad than good, in my opinion.
However I think a lot of that is down to the average buyer and their tendencies to perform scheduled maintenance and make repairs in a thorough and timely manner.
People who take good care of cars simply have less problems. A lot of the people who have problems with their cars don't maintain them well and defer minor repairs until they become major, and then blame the car.
Nah you didn't get lucky it's just confirmation bias. People who's things work as they should don't talk about it. Subaru beat Toyota last year for most reliable manufacturer and came in second the previous 4 or so years. They used to be unreliable pieces of garbage but have since turned that around.
Most people dont have those problems. And im not sure which electronics you're talking about. What'd they say when you brought it in for warranty work?
Yeah I ended up with an Impreza. Not a fan. It handled well enough after I added an STI rear sway bar. But the CVT drove like ass, it responded slowly and only returned 28mpg. Never broke on me but what a disappointing driving experience
Well itās decent for scooter designs, okay for the more sedate bulky quads, and SxS models that are basically just oversized quads, but all those cvtās share a very important distinction from the automotive designs. They are all serviceable, tunable, and can be modified or replaced easily, and for reasonable prices.
Those vehicles also donāt push 200+ hp through them while driving on well maintained surfaces with sticky tires. Except for the occasional overpriced SxS with a ridiculous sound system ācruising the stripā for some reason. Cvts are unavoidably limited to ~200whp on high traction vehicles, by the physical strength/durability of currently available materials.
so why does Nissan get a bad reputation?? They make good cars and they get singled out for cvt. Pretty sure the Ford 500 with a cvt was much more unreliable. have not seen a 500 in 20 years
Not saying that mazda makes a bad car and 30 years ago they were outstanding ,I was commenting on how Mazda 3s seemed to rust prematurely. All japanese cars are good cars and a brand shouldnāt be judged by one model that had issues.
Iām in Florida so no salt on the roads. My 20 year old Toyota had not a spot of rust on it when lost it last year when it got totaled. You donāt see rust buckets down here much anymore. So I canāt comment on that issue for any brand.
Because they were overly ambitious about pushing the limits of whatās possible in a cvt without rapid wear and inconsistent service life. They actually invested more than share into the r&d, and published thorough test results estimating 200hp was maximum realistic expectation for a cvt with our currently available materials⦠and then they mass produced 250-320hp models equipped with cvtās.
I guess the assumed consumers would carefully evaluate boring, hard to find research studies, and accept responsibility for overtaxing their transmissions?
Meanwhile Subaru has received decent reviews by limiting the majority of their cvts to <170hp motor pairings, and even the small percentage of performance trims in the 200-220ish hp range only achieve that power level at the top of the rpm range, and the vehicle programming doesnāt make it easy for a driver to spend much time in that range no matter how determined they are to grenade their transmission. Itās still not going to provide the wide variety of reliable used vehicles for 2nd and 3rd owners, and certainly wonāt lead to a vintage Subaru enthusiast scene like their older models did.
I explained one aspect of the Nissan vs Subaru.
I donāt even remember the ford 500, but it was at todayās realistic power limit for cvtās with 203hp⦠on a cvt designed 30yrs ago.
Well to be fair a snowmobile has next to no hours put on it in its lifetime compared to a car.
The surface and the slipping helps a sled cvt last. It is nothing like pushing on ground with tires.
Comparing a seasonal form of transportation that might see 2000 hours in its entire life to a car is silly. A normal commute and driving is well north of 700 hours per year or more than a third of that sleds life.
They sucked to drive back before they had CVTs too. When I was younger, my mother bought a new Impreza with a five speed. We all hated that car. She usually drove her cars into the ground, that one was gone in three years.
Never had any trouble with it (except for the clearcoat turning hazy) but it was miserable to drive.
I had a 7 year old forester with 110k miles, just rebuilt the entire engine, and 3 months later it just starts knocking and sends a rod through the engine before I could even pull over
Damn, yall must just have those American Subaru's,
My jdm subaru has 250 thousand kilometres on it.
I don't get it. I boost all the time, no legit mechanical issues yet .
I bought an 06 Forester and even doing all the work myself it's a bitch. I'd probably have double into it then what I bought it for if I had to have a shop do it
In 1988 I purchased an 83 GL wagon to get me through the last three years of college in New England. Though underpowered, that thing proved to be the most indestructible vehicle. No snowstorm ever stopped it, tackled dirt roads in the boondocks then right back onto the pavement for tens of thousands of miles. Itās on the fly 4WD never failed to get me out of a jam. Rust took her from me in the end. My family has had several Outbacks and Foresters since, and theyāve all proven to be just as reliable and durable.
I have a 17 outback 2.5 we've had since new (170k on it now) and there are tons of little things I hate, but I do all my own mechanical work and it's been the easiest car I've owned to work on (cv axle replacement, for example), and no major issues so far beyond a new windshield and battery approximately every 2 years since new
Had mine for 8 months and I'm getting rid of it, obviously, for a loss. Its an awful car. I loved my early 2000s subie. Ive never gotten rid of a car in less than 5 years
CVT so far so good, but after only 33k kms driven gently it has developed a clunky sound from breaking pads when hitting road cracks . Pretty unacceptable for a new car.
Had an 06 Legacy I bought with 11000 miles and traded it in with 107,000 miles when I bought my Accord. It was a great car and I had zero issues with it
I drove the unicorn Subaru for 14 years with not a single penny spent on anything but standard maintenance. The unicorn Subaru is a 2010 to 2014 Outback with the flat six and the 5-speed automatic transmission. As close to bulletproof as Subaru ever got and never will be again. Mine was a 2011 model and selling it was the dumbest thing I've ever done.
I have two Subarus. One with over 175k (Outback) and another closer to 100k (Forrester). Both have been maintained and have had ZERO problems. Will definitely buy another when the time comes.
My GF drives one, somehow has managed to keep it alive but she does a shit job of taking it to maintenance. Mostly does it when something breaks. I try to help out iwth any quick YT guides and first time i did it it was just a bunch of videos of things that break in subarus and people being like "oh yeah that's normal, here's my trick to fix it".
Her window just never seems to go down. gets stuck half the time. Ive reset that thing so many times and it just goes back to not working.
We've had two Subarus with over 150k on them and they were some of the most reliable cars we've ever owned. I don't think we ever had a major repair on either of them. Just kept up the maintenance schedule and drove them. My sister in law is still driving one of them with over 200k on it.
They became famous for being one of the first to have a 200k mile car in the 90s, and somehow havent improved since then.
Theyre not terrible, just inline with everyone else that makes a 150k car now.
They beat Toyota last year for most reliable manufacturer and came in second like the previous 4 years. They have completely turned their reliability around.
Not sure where that info comes from though. Toyota has been building shit cars after the pandemic, and Subaru has always made shit cars. Source- I'm a mechanic, and nearly all of the "reliable" cars are now shit. Even Honda is guilty of it and their newer turbo engines are turds.
Also just to throw Toyota some more shade, they've built really reliable cars in the past, but they built them out of the worst materials possible so working on one with ANY age or rust will make you hate your life
We had a 2005 Outback that was the bane of my existence. I hate that damn car to this day. Developed a coolant leak that I spent hours and hours trying to fix/find. Head gaskets, thermostat replacement, leak down checks, on and on. Never went away and even the damn Subaru mechanic couldnāt find it. Then it developed an emission issue and I decided I was done with it. Thankfully I live in Colorado where people will pay out the nose for Subarus. Sold it for like $5K after telling the guy that it had a coolant leak that nobody could find, and it struggled with emissions. He didnāt care at all and walked out smiling like he had just robbed me. That car can fāing rot in hell.
Iām a dad and donāt give two shits about quick acceleration. The CVT in my 2015 cross track is still going strong after 155k miles. Just had the valve body replaced, but other than A/C and burning oil, thatās about it for major repairs. And it still burns oil.
I really want to buy a wrx sti or a brz (wrx being more practical) but I'm terrified of the unreliability. Just gunna keep driving my civic till death.
Never had an issue with my 6mt Crosstrek. 90k miles and itās only needed the usual maintenance. Thing is the slowest thing Iāve ever driven, but it gets from point a to b just fine. That said Iām hesitant to pick up an old wrx wagon just based on lottery of if the cars were abused or just accepting that theyāre going to all need preventative maintenance at the higher mileage.
My last Impreza had over 400k miles. Original engine and trans. I've owned 6 of them, all different models. Dislike the cars all you want, but if you maintain them, they run.
Dammit I wanted this answer. Yes they are kinda not reliable after a certain amount of miles. And any hardxore subie fan will tell you different... lol
That's not helping my case š
But FWFW, mine doesn't consume anything even with 6k intervals. I know turbo boxers like to burn oil, but with that much consumption I'd probably look into it lol
In danger of sounding like a Subaru fanboy(I am), but they ranked 1 in consumer reliability last year. BRZ and WRX are what gives Subaru the unreliable rep
Itās fine, love your car. I can just tell you my experience having been a Subaru owner 17 years, a Subaru tech, and also ran one of the largest Subaru clubs in North America. They are not great and poorly engineered with parts much cheaper quality than they once were.
Like how the fuck do you make a 2.5L non turbo or turbo engine with between 140 and 200nsome horsepower unreliable? I love the way Subarus look and sound but my god.Ā
My score: 2 Subarus = 2 blown head gaskets + 1 failed CVT
Decided to give Subaru another chance and bought a new Forester Wilderness (my 3rd). Couldnt stand it and sold it after about 6 months.
My wife has a 2019 outback
Mom has an 2014 outbackĀ
Mother in law has an old legacy with 250k 2013 outback with 200k and a 2025 forester.
Their leather is trash, power windows break often, they all have bad road noise.
Otherwise they are cars for librarians.
I am huge guy and just dont fit. Not a bad car but nothing magical
They are "reliable" in the sense that generally the NA models make it to 100k without massive issues and then everything falls apart. So they get good reliability scores when new.
Pretty much every Subaru ever has a massive failure point around 100k. Headgasket then cam shaft seals then CVT detonation.
Ha, I bought a 2009 Forester with 125k miles on it for 5k. Ended up spending 13k total on it before selling it, and didnāt even get to drive it 5k miles. Will never trust a Subaru again, unless I sell it before 50k.
I bought 2010 back in 2012 with about 20k miles on it. It was already falling apart and it was such poor build quality I got rid of it after about 3 weeks. Took a $5k loss on it. Absolutely hated it
I have to say that no other brand divides so powerfully between love and hate. I've known folks who would have nothing else, and others who would have anything but. It's weird. (I'm a Nissan Frontier guy, so no horse in the race)
Audis are reliable. I drove one for 6.5 years. Not one issue. Except for coolant hose that needed to be changed at 80k miles. Other than that, it was a dream to drive. I got rid of it because I wanted a bigger suv. Otherwise, Iād still be driving it. It was a Q5, btw.
I leased one brand new. Still probably the best BMW Iāve ever had. Would 100% get another if they made them new. Definitely wouldnāt want one without a warranty though. š
I'm in love with (the thought of) the E93. Convertible when it's nice out, coupe when it isn't.
Not only does it eat rod bearings, but I've seen many horror stories of just how much a hard top convertible is to fix if something goes wrong...
I've had one for 7 years. If you do the preventative stuff and fluid changes every 5k miles or so, they are actually extremely reliable considering what an amazing machine it is. Parts and maintenance are expensive though. It's not my daily but it's one of the most reliable cars I've owned. a snapped shock left me stranded once but other than that it's been pretty good.
Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid Wagon, 2026 RS 6 Avant or Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo. I like wagons and if these aren't a death sentence on my wallet it means I have the money to buy anything I want (I don't).
As someone who owns a 15 year old Aston Martin, as long as you have a good independent mechanic and cross reference some part numbers. Itās not nearly as bad as youād think.
I own a 20 year old Bentley.
Guess what? Itās in the garage, NOT running because I canāt find the parts I need to fix it and if Iām able to, it will cost me a bloody fortune.
I inherited the paperweight, I didnāt buy it.
What parts? Most of them hem are generic VW part numbers. At best, Audi for a small fraction of the cost. Generally just pretend that your Bentley is an Audi A8 and your RR Ghost is a BMW 760Li and you canāt go far wrong. Parts will be cheap and plentiful.
I've seen 20 year old Bentlys come up for and have thought about buying one but I don't think I could afford to keep gas in it let alone keep it running.
There are so many great/cool cars that are maintenance nightmares. Itād be hard to choose just one, Iād want a Land Rover discovery, Ferrari, Austin Martin, Mercedes or Bentleyā¦
I think the Range Rover Evoque has got to be one of the best looking vehicles out there. Priced pretty decently in the used market as well.
Donāt think they get too much praise for being reliable lol.
The new Tundras fall into the same category for me. Would love to get rid of my 3/4 ton GM and into a Tundra, the Hollywood sliding rear window is one of the best features in them. Wouldnāt touch them because of the potential engine failures
Maserati Quattroporte! Second gen though refined with more reliable transmission still has expensive maintenance given the Ferrari engine and luxury car maintenance cost.
Car? Never really thought of it. Don't need something crazy like a Lambo. Tesla Roadster would be sick. Anything super sporty really.
But I travel a lot for work, so I mean....I would get one of those buses that bands use for touring and just live in that damn thing for life, work, travel etc...but it'd be a top of the line one. Just needs internet! StarLink! Oh yeah. Life would be incredible.
Last year my wife's 2015 Forester needed new control arms at 56K miles. Since I had worked as a Lexus associate for 30 years I found that unacceptable. I had driven Lexus since I started working with them and never had issues. The control arms on Lexus would last about 150k (from my memories). One time the drivers seat on my 2008 GS350 started groaning when adjusting and I had the seat track replaced under warranty It didn't fail, it just made noise.. Besides that nothing. Not even a check engine light. I was provided a new car every year and only drove about 20K annually, Before the Forester we had been leasing other Lexus models for my wife and we never had any issues on those vehicles either. I Between the both of us we have had about 30 Lexus over the years. I was a Finance guy and would offer extended warranties. I wish I had a nickel (maybe a quarter these days) for every time I heard a prior owner decline coverage as their old one never had any issues. Even thought they cost more upfront, if you kept the car a long time and factored in repair costs and resale value Lexus would pencil out to be a better cost per mile investment than other brands. Just ask other Lexus owners. That being said I'm gonna be leasing for the rest of my life just to keep up on new tech with minimal maintenance.
For a "marvel of engineering," the voodoo has a reputation for breaking crankshafts. If you like flat plane crank domestic V8's, the LT6 in the Z06 is the answer. Most powerful production NA V8 in the world.
Had 4 subbys.....
2 95 legacy wagons with 5 speed. Bought at 210,000....sold two years later at 242,000 with many not engine or trans issues.
02 outback wagon with 189,000 and sold 4 years later 8000 miles short of 300,000 miles.
Lots of small issues that was not worth fixing.
07 impressive wagon with stick. 149,000 and sold at 175,000.
Freind did timing belt...fucked up and locked motor up...was not doing a motor swap.
Whatās so expensive on them? Drivetrain is solid, besides that I would mostly expect typical old car things. My E46 M3 was pretty dead reliable for 30k miles while I owned it, definitely had to spend less on maintenance than a lot of commuter cars.
They are expensive if you don't do the work yourself. They also depreciated so fast that people who couldn't afford to maintain them, bought them, ran them into the ground and sold them on.
Its a German luxury sports car, so the the only way is to pay premium up front to get one that has be well maintained. It will pay off in the long run. The same logic applies to any car that is a quarter century old.
Pretty much all quality parts for them are becoming more expensive, and even a lot of the trusted German parts brands are starting to outsource things to China and quality has dropped leading to the need for more frequent replacement.
There are several items on these that wear out the fast even with good parts, namely the front suspension thrust arm bushings, front window regulators, and the thermostat (never seen one last more than 2 years).
At the age they are at you will need to be thinking about very expensive preventative maintenance like replacing the timing chains guides (which some OE parts are NLA) and VANOS rebuilds along with resealing everything on the engine. There are a fair number of small hoses under the intake plenum that can cost over $80/each.
Suspension components are expensive and most E39s are to the age that they will need complete rebuilds including subframe bushings. It's not hard to work on but it does take a lot of time. If you can't do all that sort of stuff yourself it will get really expensive really quickly.
But I will keep this car as long as parts exist. IMO it's probably the best sedan ever made.
Ahh makes a lot of sense. I got my E55 after my M3 and Iām having the same issues. Reputable brands like Lemforder are coming out with crap quality parts now and I feel like a fool for paying all that money for sub-par suspension components. Not much else is available unless you go OEM, which if available at all, is often stupid expensive.
But I feel the same way about my car, Iād like to keep it forever and I have it at the top of my list of best sedans of all time right alongside the E39 M5.
Funny enough, I almost got an M5 instead of my M3 back in the day but I had never owned a coupe and thought it would be a cool change. Little did I know that the M5 would absolutely skyrocket in price shortly after.
I would budget for $5k/ear minimum. I've probably averaged closer to $4k/year with my current one but I do all my own maintenance and it's been shocking reliable. Very few things have "broken" over the 12 years I've had it, only wear items(seals, hoses, bushings, suspension, etc).
Any Mercedes from the early/mid 2000ās with the BiTurbo V12 (M275). The cost of fuelā¦.eventual repairs would be back breaking. The sound and power they make is unlike anything though. Even the starter sounds like a mini turbine spooling up as it tries to turn the beast over.
Yeah. It took longer than I expected to find this comment. I had one under warranty and loved it. Would buy again but Iām not prepared for the inevitable problems.
Probably a used Maserati. Any of them, really. They're beautiful cars, great performance, luxury appointments, and they lose resale value quickly so they're pretty cheap used.
But the cost quickly skyrockets for maintenance and reliability. So if reliability and cost to maintain wasn't an issue, I would get a used Maserati. Of course, if reliability and maintenance costs were less of an issue, the resale value would increase exponentially accordingly.
Frankly I just bought it. 2021 MachE 4X premium. Most car I have ever owned been wonderful so far. No gas stations to visit etc etc. if I had the money I would have bought a newer one.
Emira. Quadrafolgio. 2013-2016 911. All within my budget to buy, but I know the maintenance and repairs would be murder, quickly exceeding the cost of the cars.
Probably an N54 powered BMW. Used to have one but you have to fix something almost on a monthly basis once theyāre above 110,000 miles. Fast cars though when you tune them.
The nc generation of Miata uses a shortened and lighter version of the same chassis architecture with a reliable 2L engine. It was the best car Iāve ever owned
While maintenance isnāt cheap, I feel like the perception among owners on the forum is that theyāre relatively robust. There are plenty of examples with high 5 figure miles.
I bought mine with 18k miles, drove it to 30k in less than a year. Drives, daily duty, track days. No problems. But I also did all of the major maintenance items as soon as I bought it. All in all the car was rock solid, surprisingly!
Maserati GranTurismo is the most correct answer here. It is the automotive equivalent of you watching the video of a hot chic getting arrested for setting a trash can on fire and hurling it at a playground full of kids muttering to yourself āI can fix herā.
Maserati yes, the GranTurismo no. The GT is hand built, with a robust motor, and strong gearbox (non f1). I get that standard repairs cost more, but overall a very reliable car for what it is.
The GT and 5th gen quattroporte (with the ZF 6) are absolutely hidden gems. If we let people continue to believe theyāre unreliable, they will stay cheap
Iām pretty sure those V12s are moderately reliable for their class. That doesnāt change the fact that basic maintenance is very expensive though. One of the biggest issues is the coil packs are one per bank, so one bad coil means youāre buying 6, and itās not cheap.
These are perfect examples of this question. I had a buddy with a SL65 AMG. He said it was a rocket ship 100% of the time he owned it: 25% on the road, and 75% of his bank account ever time he repaired it.
Dang, my dad has had good luck with his SL65. Owned 6 between 2004-2018. Keeps them for 2-3 years, trades in/cash for next one. Always got maintenance at dealership. Hardly any downtime. Remember he did put 20k miles in 2 years on his 2011 model. But definitely traded in 2014.
Yep bring on that beautiful sounding Maserati GranTurismo. They sound absolutely amazing and look great too.
The AMG is still really nice too but it won't break the bank like a Maserati would
3 years isn't long enough to say a vehicle is reliable. That's actually the problem. Most people lease new vehicles for 3 years, so manufacturers focus on those 1st 3 years. That's when stuff starts really having issues, especially after the warranty runs out.
There are a lot of vehicles I would lease new, then give back after 3 years. There are few vehicles 5 years old, 60k+ miles that I would buy used!
The 2020 was purchased in fall of 2019, which is about 6.5 years ago. Granted, it only has 60k miles. So weāll see how it holds up over the next few years!
Jump on the train, I got an F-Type to replace my miata, they're much more reliable than people think, but the reputation makes them cheap.
As a disclaimer though, I'm also in the process of hunting down a Range Rover to keep the jag company in the garage. So we may have different views on acceptable reliability metrics.
I keep hearing that! And due to depreciation, they're quite reasonably priced as well. Imo, it's the best looking car ever. Of all time. Definitely my dream car.
And you can get them with a manual 6-speed. I got one and its worth about as much now as what I paid before the pandemic, maybe a little more. I think the depreciation curve has bottomed out.
A CL600. I really want a V12, and these cars are often a fantastic "bargain" except that maintenance and repairs (often the same thing with German cars IME) will destroy the wallet.
For sure. They had a quirky suspension issue, each electronic damper was 2k. And a rear main oil leak, that you had to remove the engine for. And omg. The brakes
There have been several that have sold at auction under 100k. Plus since they were all left hand drive and sold in the US market, you can import from anywhere in the world.
For reliability & economical comfortable daily-
Altis / Camry Hybrid
With money not an object š
For fun-
Ferrari California
Mercedes GLS63
(Top of the lines with all the packages of course)
I still wouldnāt bother.
For me, itās not all about the money; itās also the hassle factor. Dealing with the largely avoidable disruption to my daily life is a dealbreaker.
VW Sportwagen. I had a 2018 manual 4Motion. Great car to drive. The practicality of an SUV but drove like a sports sedan. Unfortunately it was an unreliable POS. Got rid of it at 130k km and 7 years after I dropped $5400 on a major repair for something that should never fail: the drivetrain flex coupling that did a lot of collateral damage when it failed. And it wasnāt the first major issue. Turbo, cracked oil pan, lots of rust and a bunch of minor stuff.
Now I drive a 2024 RAV4. Nowhere near as fun but I need the space to carry awkward things regularly. And so far itās reliable, time will tell.
Jeep Wrangler. I love driving around with the top and doors off. But unfortunately, they've pretty much always been crap, and have gotten way worse in the past 5 years or so. Total garbage!
Toyota, looking to get my get a used four runner after pouring money into f series pickups for the past 35 years. I have had a few good ones but my diesel was the last straw and I have leased for the first time because I need a reliable truck for work. Leased my kid a hornet, stranded him four times and had the motor lock up at 12,000 miles š See a ton of Yotas on FB mplace with 200-300k. I don't think many domestics make it that long on the original engine and transmission
67ā mk1 Jag E Type beautiful car (If you believe Enzo Ferrari) but rust and British quality being what they are Iād rather push a bolder up an fine ramp.
Range Rover. Beautiful inside and out, luxurious, capable⦠out of warranty repairs would absolutely ruin me
Modern Volvo, specially XC90 and V90. Similar to above
Maserati. The forgotten Italian sports car. Ferrari derived engines, Italian leather interiors, beautiful, sound fantastic⦠good luck if you ever need to buy any parts
Alfa Romeo. Actually not that unreasonable, they are a lot better recently than people give them credit for. Dealer and service network doesnāt exist where I live. Closest one is a full day drive from where I am.
My friend recently bought a new to him 2018 Range Rover Supercharged. It is absolutely a pleasure to drive, comfortable. Just gorgeous. Three days after he bought it, it overheated, resulting in an $8000 repair bill. Now it has a suspension fault (but hopefully thatās as simple as a bad sensor). For what itās worth, Iāve had 5 Land Rovers and theyāve been pretty good to me!
Iāve had two RRās and currently own a Defender 110. Absolutely love them! I still miss my old 2008 RRS SC. Iāll have a 2007-2009 supercharged again someday. Theyāre surprisingly reliable in that vintage and fantastic to drive.
I have a 2016 LR4, which has been fairly reliable but has needed a few expensive repairs. I currently have a 110 V8, I love every second of driving it and zero issues
First gen XC90 with the Yamaha tuned V8? I wouldnāt think twice if I was in the market and found a good clean example. I was referring to newer Volvos with 4 cylinder drivetrains
Oh, I think the engine itself is solid and would love to have one to swap into something more nimble, but doing anything to it would bleed a fellow dry. Those engine bays are cramped even with the T5 and T6, the V8s look not unlike a 300zx from a ālabor under the hoodā perspective. Also Iām just bitter because my V70XC recently shit the bed.
Maybe a Giulia Quadrifoglio. Used market is decently attainable and seems to be a very fun daily, but too worried that maintenance would bankrupt my wallet
GMC Sierra , I absolutely love the body styles of the 2025 + ⦠but mechanically they are shit , along with Dodge Rams which I would also buy if it didnāt affect my wallet .
1965 Jaguar XKE convertible, yellow with a black interior. My father owned one. It was beautiful, but if the humidity changed the car wouldnāt start. A Weber carb conversion helped but the car was unreliable as hell. Even as a kid I thought it was the most beautiful car ever made. Enzo Ferrari agreed with my statement as well.
I asked Owen a death sentence to my wallet for reliability-ā89 Vanagon Wolfsburg. š
Kidding. Itās never let me down, just needs constant love.
Iād get a Citroen DS if they werenāt such a nightmare to repair and maintain with hydraulic everything.
Dad bought the original 4995.00 Hyundai in 87 it got a bit shaky at 187k. Guess the timing chain was supposed to be serviced at some point. My buddies and I used it for a rally car around the farm for a bit. Oil changes and brakes all he did. Bought several more of their cars over the years. Nary a problem. Though stepmom crashed one before reaching his general 200k average. He did tell me once. Talked to the service advisor. He told my dad that they buy it and then we never see them again til they have a problem. 50k on the motor and never had an oil change. Now, they reappear wanting warranty work. Iād say his last on was a2011. Solid product for sure. But, heās dead and maybe the brand has died too
Sure, but I've been wanting a hatchback. I'm most definitely gonna go for a mazda3. I've been trying to get away from a monthly car payment, so I'm trying to get something dirt cheap.
The Turbo models in the first generation are decently reliable. They donāt have the Theta II engine, and the 1.6 can be fairly potent for that platform with some mods thrown at it.
It's a shame because the older G4 motors from the mid 90's were amazing. Adequate power with a 140hp 2 litre, however very reliable. Good little motor for a Coupe / Tiburon and other economy cars of the time.
The later Gamma and Theta engines were terrible, massive oil burners and often resulted in catastrophic engine failure, which would economically write the car off because a brand new motor + labour is worth more than the car is and you'd be stupid to put a second hand one in.
I test drove a whole heap of Veloster's when they first came out. The manual and DCT were pretty fun with the turbo motor. I'm glad I didn't commit to one.
I bought a MY 2013 non turbo DCT Veloster new for ~$18k in 2012 with the 10 year warranty. Drove it until late 2021, had 75k miles on it but no issues at all, just normal maintenance. On a whim, plugged into Carvana and they offered me $13.5k for it, even with a dent in the door. I took that so fast. It was a fun car, slow as hell without the turbo but got insane MPGs, and still pretty tossable. But I always lived in fear with all the stories of motors and transmissions catastrophically failing, figured I should get out while the insane covid used car money was still flowing.
Bought a 1991 Mercedes 300TE 4matic wagon after that, my endgame car.
Old Mercedes is where it's at.
My great uncle has a yellow w123. It would have whatever the cheapest engine and trim was available in Australia. So a 2.3 probably.
Considering the old girl is still on the road today as a daily driver says something about old car dependability, outside of regular expected maintenance it's only ever needed a fuel tank and fuel pump due to some rust.
Unfortunately that car didn't get passed along to me, but his brother has been enjoying it for the last 10 years or so.
The oil burning was the main reason why I got rid of my 2016 Veloster (non-turbo) at just 84,000 miles. I got it when it had 50,000 miles, did oil changes every 3,000 miles, and it began burning oil at around 70,000 miles and got worse and worse, and right before I got rid of it, the oil began having glitter in it.
I wanted to get manual, but My sis was between vehicles at the time so I opted for the Dual clutch. Its been solid so far just took some getting used to
Hyundais are interesting. They have had catastrophic problems with motors. I owned two. Both needed new motors, but were done under warranty. Other than that 140k miles and 112k miles and incredibly reliable. I honestly don't know what to think.
2020 Veloster N manual made it 6 years and 108k miles of beating it every single day. Replaced normal things... 6 sets of tires, 5 sets of spark plugs (it was tuned), hpfp (known to fail and generally can't handle a tune), rotors and pads 4x up front, 2x on the rear. It was a fantastic car. One of my favorites of all time. On the Elantra N now. Fingers crossed it treats me the same.
I have one now. Itās a 2012 with 78K, got it last year with 60K on it. It ran rough when I got it, but a new fuel pump and ignition coils completely fixed it. Runs like a champ now. Iām nervous about it breaking but itās honestly been great. Biggest gripe is the heavy 18 inch wheels with 40-series tires getting eaten by potholes. Itās really fun to drive though.
996 911. There are some nice ones in my price range, but bore scoring, ISB etc.
$30k plus to rebuild an engine in a $40k car would make me an unhappy enthusiast.
Any Porsche. My wife loves the Maccan and I've always wanted a 911. We compared a Panamera with the Acura TLX we eventually bought, but reliability ratings stops any Porsche purchases for us.
You made a wise choice. I know Acuras dont have the Porsche badge, which adds 50+ aura points, but pull the badges off, and the Acura is just as nice (and 3x as reliable).
Someone down voted me, nice.
Yeah, the TLX A-spec AWD is a great car. It goes to the shop when I decide, not every few months. Porsche parts pricing just shocks my wallet, so I will never own one.
That is one big reason why I always wanted one. My cousin has an old school 1983 911 in all black. Amazing car.
But the Macan / Cayanne is more the model my wife wants, and that is a hard SUV to buy and care for.
Porsche has been consistently one of the most reliable German brands, and brands in general. Anything that does end up going wrong, Porsche is usually very good and quick to fix things.
You're missing out. Porsches are pretty reliable and easy to work on. I've had many that I've put obscene amounts of miles on. The macan shouldn't be considered when the cayenne exists, either. Fantastic vehicles. Also, 911's are well regarded as one of the most reliable sports cars ever.
I see 15k Maccans for sale all the time with a 100k miles and some years on them and Iām tempted to pick one up except for the realization that there is probably a good reason they are selling for only $15k.
You could also be one of those lucky ones who have ā100k miles and not one issue so far!ā I think it all depends on luck! You either have it, or you donāt. But in all seriousness, I hear you!
Mazda rx8. Those wankel engines sound beautiful and love to rev high at the drop of a hat in a way a traditional combustion engine cannot compete with. They are a ton of fun to drive and pretty quick. I learned how to drive stick on one. It's what I consider my realistic/attainable dream car once I'm not living paycheck to paycheck. I can't afford to drop money on a blown engine unexpectedly.
Land Rover LR4 (also called the discovery 4 in some places). I loved mine so damn much but it was costing $7k a year on average to keep up with. I have had many other luxury vehicles but none of them cost anywhere near as much or had continual issues like my Land Rover. If I was wealthier Iād consider it worth it. Having a Land Rover is much like owning a horse: Expensive and time consuming⦠but totally worth it if you have the means and can afford to light money on fire.
I love the comparison of basically owning a horse - super on point. I just got my first oil change on the new defender that cost 400 bucks plus tax. Another dealership a few miles away quoted me 600 bucks. I donāt even want to imagine what the maintenance will cost.
Ha! I obsessed over it for 2 years and finally told myself enough was enough⦠and purchased a new 2026 exactly on my birthday as a gift to myself. My husband, knowing all about the risks of owning one was very against it, but ultimately, I made the decision to go for it.
Iād like to think that I m going to be one of those lucky defender owners with 100k miles and no issues. One can hope!
Range Rover Sport ... But, as is well known, you never want to own a Land Rover / Range Rover product that's out of the warranty period, and even then, you need to have a second car as a backup, since the Rover will be spending considerable time in the Service Dept.
I have a very boring 2013 first Cmax hybrid. 178k miles. Nothing but oil changes, air filter replacement, tires. A few light bulbs. 12v battery replaced a few times. $15 plastic radiator plug cracked, cost me a tow, was most expensive so far. Due for transmission fluid change. Still runs great, 38 mpg combined City/ highway driving.
Do I have to use my own money to buy the car and pay for the repairs, just that parts and labor costs are nonconsequential? A 2005 Porsche Boxster S. Iād keep that thing running forever.
Not so bad once you have 3 different lengths of every size Torx and triple square bit. I now assume in advance that things will be 11mm hex instead of 10 or 12. Whatever tool doesn't come in the kit is the one you need.
The RSās are perfectly fine once the head gasket issue is fixed. The 2.3 is a solid engine. Just got put together with the wrong Mustang gasket on the early production cars.
Maserati, TVR, Alfa Romeos, Dodge Hornet GT Track pack and mod it, and do it up retro like an old AMC Hornetā¦
Old Internationals like a Fleetstar, Loadstar and Scoutā¦
Audi V10āsā¦
Aston Martin DBS
Any vehicle with a Rotary engine. I feel the RX-8 is such an under-appreciated and unloved car purely due to the engine. If they werenāt so finicky and required such intensive care, Iād love to own one.
2020+ BMW G30 M550i. Twin turbo V8, 500+ HP, all wheel drive, absolutely amazing car. Except that the N63, even the updated ones, have a bit of a reputation for being failure prone, and also the evap core *will* fail, and thatās a $5-7k repair.
If I can find a CPO with a warranty, maybe. Otherwise, *hell* no.
Ioniq 5.
I absolutely love love love this car. But the odds are 1 in 10 that the ICCU will die on you. And the repair stories are \*nightmares\*. Some people waiting months to get a fix, no loaner car, and dealerships that do not care.
If Hyundai would get their shit together and FIX the thing? I'd buy one tomorrow. But the 26 models are still crapping out.
It's a shame. It's a lovely car otherwise. But no way no how am I buying one until they address this. It's a charging unit, guys! I KNOW YOU CAN MAKE A GOOD ONE. So do it.
The Dodge Avenger is such an awesome looking car but it's a shame it's one of the most unreliable ones here in the EU at least
Also Mazda RX8 but I love thst car so much thst I will probably put aside my concerns about it and buy one one day either way
Since literally every us car maker is going to a turbo charged 4 cylinder i have no idea, but would advise anything made outside the country minus Hyundai
My last forester I drove 225,000 miles and had 18 years. Loved that car. Replaced with a 2025 Hybrid Forester. I am loving it too. You take care of a Subaru and it will take care of you.
If money wasn't an issue, I'd get my wife a Jeep, probably a wrangler. She's always wanted one as she has always been the hiking/camping/explorer type. My argument is always that it'd be a horrible daily driver to work for her (an hour each way) but in reality I've heard enough horror stories from neighbors (as a farmer, that's the enitre county) about Jeep issues that I myself have no desire to ever buy one
Alfa Romeo Giulia every time. These are some of the most elegant cars built in the last 15 years, super comfortable, very sporty and fun to drive but theyāre also VERY demanding in maintenance.
The Lancia Stratos is my dream car. Beautiful to look at, would be so much fun to drive. One of only three cars I can think of that are actively trying to kill the driver. The other two being a 1st Gen Dodge Viper and the āwidowmakerā Porsche 911 š
BMW X5 or BMW M5, I have the money but not the tolerance for paying ridiculous maintenance fees just to keep it running. I love driving so I would easily go over whatever mileage limit they have on their warranty. f I were to lease under warranty no problem but to buy no way.
Imagine having a Hemi āCuda ( not Barracuda ) convertible , 426 Hemi , 4 speed , all matching s# and not feeling like you can thrash it to 10/10ths because when you throw a rod youāve destroyed something that can be replaced.
Any newer Ferrari, but when ceramic brakes are $30,000 and tires are $10,000 ea and only make it one track day it becomes a big nope.
So I bought a used Jaguar XKR 2007 and I can get parts and work on it cheap.
And it is beautiful.
My wallet could handle it but why be bothered ? Iāve heard that there is only one man in American that really is the best working on the 1961 Lincoln Continental convertible ( I think it was very similar thru 1965) to make the top work perfect. To have a 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz convertible & a 1961 Lincoln Continental Convertible would satisfy the itch . I can afford it but I canāt justify it . Plus likely I like the idea of having more than the reality of keeping it spotless
Modern? Mercedes AMG GT Coupe. Powerful, fun, oozes class and intrigue. Do not trust it as far as I can throw it reliability wise - it being a modern Mercedes, after all.
Classic? Saab 900 Turbo. Maybe 15 years ago one of these wouldāve been feasible to daily, but now parts and maintenance must be a nightmare - even if they arenāt particularly unreliable for what they are.
I would rebuy my E65 Alpina B7.
Sold it for $9000 because I realized I just didnāt have the means to work on it myself or pay someone else to work on it when it inevitably would need service.
If you get the right Maserati model, you can see all the pretty lights come up on your dash all at once. All within 1 year of driving it off the lot. Also, maintenance is freaky expensive?? My old neighbor got one to celebrate his retirement and told me came back one day with a $4000 maintenance bill. This was like 2018 lmao
What is nice with your choice is that there's no Maserati that can pretend to be reliable or not a wallet death-trap.
I'd choose a 3200gt to kill my wallet, or maybe a biturbo 224.
I have zero interest in any new car. I would like to have a fully restored Jeep J10 with a fuel injected 401, modern air conditioning, and an overdrive transmission.
U mean what unreliable car would I buy if money/time to fix it or reliability became a non issue?
Probably a brand new Chevy truck. But thats both money/reliability. 6.2 w 10spd is an expensive repair trap. And I love that brand. But truth hurts.
The rest is long read or move on if u want.
A lot of the newer vehicles have their poison pills.
A new chevy truck w a reliable 6.2 no recall on bearings and oil viscosity figured out.
Ford overall is transmissions. Mainly all the new 10 speeds and I believe the CDF drum?
Chevy 10 spd not great either but ford is company wide.
Stellantis/Chrysler...make Evap sys easier to work with. Not as familiar w their newer struggles.
Every automaker that runs a turbo, or non with direct injection.
Educating customers in sales and service that oil levels and changes are king to keeping your engine healthy.
5k oil changes need regular oil level checks.
I test drove a Stealth TT and almost bought it about 10 years ago. Glad I didn't, repairs are nutty expensive just in labour alone. They really jammed everything in there under the hood.
My biggest car regret story is not spending $30K on a perfectly restored and running Kaiser Darrin, because it is definitely not that price now. The divorce would cost me a lot more than the $130K it goes for now. š¢
1972 Citroen DS 19 Cabriolet. I've dreamed of owning one of these since I was just a boy. And it would take everything I have to keep it on the road for a few years. Everthing.
I would get the rocker panels fully rebuilt on my shitbox. But I can probably get like 3-4 new shitboxes for the same cost considering how much fucking work that is.
Land Rover Defender. The 90, two door.
I think it's beautiful and I love the size and proportions.
Being an Acura owner and having no problems with my 11 year old vehicle , going to a Defender would be an unwise decision.
In my current price range?
A 2002 Cadillac Seville STS. It is as reliable as a BMW, it needs an engine overhaul every 100k, it needs the transaxle built to withstand 500hp to handle the factory 300, But I really like the design, the FWD power train and how distinct by that time is was from the Deville.
Any Soviet car. Yes they are cheap, Yes, the parts are cheap. Yes, the worst Western car is better than the best Soviet car. But it is weird and retro. And somebody will constantly have to be wrenching on it to keep it on the road.
1999 BMW M3
Although these were far more reliable past 100,000 miles than modern BMWs, the amount of old plastic, worn parts and expensive labor would mean that it spent more time on the lift than on the pavement.
The time and aggregation dealing with it is also an issue, otherwise Iād have a Radical instead of an Atom. I have never seen a Radical make a full session without some sort of issue.
A Mazdaspeed 3ā¦. Iām a Mazda junkie but Iām a reporter with a reporterās salary and I need my daily to start every time. So I rock a 2011 2.5L 6mt Mazda 3 hatch but yearn for the SPEED!
A long wheelbase L405 Range Rover with the Supercharged 5.0L. And I already own one, so I know how bad it is, but itās an amazing machine when it works.
You know, now that I think about it I actually went through a semi-serious examination of this question years ago, during a time when you could get a Ferrari 400/412 in decent driver condition for high $20Ks - low $30Ks. I actually started looking.
But I quickly determined I couldn't afford to keep one on the road. The care and feeding of an older Ferrari is not for the faint-hearted or light-walleted. Plus, I'm no mechanic but I am a decent D-I-Y wrencher, but there was no joy there either. YouTube isn't exactly full of videos to help a D-I-Yer service a car they built only a few hundred of. Worse, all of the stuff that seemed most likely to require attention required knowledge I couldn't plausibly teach myself.
An Alfa Guilia Quadrifoglio. Absolute shit reliability and build quality, but damn is it beautiful. I have a feeling it would break my heart and leave me stranded more than once.
