What's a car from any point in history, you wish they still sold brand new today, that you would scoop one up right away if they did? What makes that car so special?

If it wasn’t discontinued for North America, I would get Honda Fit. What makes it special is how the seats go and r/thingsthatfitinafit

It sucks how the sub compact cars are virtually none existent new these days.

It’s practical cars in general. Somewhat recently I got a ride in a Mitsubishi Expander and was blown away by how much room it had for its footprint.

Europe and Asia still has a market for them though.

You make no margin on them in a market that encourages overspending and normalizes 72 month term auto loans.

While i would give the new model a try because i really like how they’ve updated it, i do not recommend, i repeat! I do not recommend the 2020 model. Ours is falling apart in every direction. All kind of cosmetic issues, some mechanical ones. Homda did nothing for us when we asked about some of the issues. Its safe to say our 2020 is in worst shape than our 2010 which has zero factory issues. Keep in mind the 2010 is a family car and the 2020 is a single person use. Im really hoping, but not enthusiastic, the engine and transmission don’t crap out before it hits 100k. Worst purchase we’ve ever made.
SkylineFTW97@reddit
I didn't learn how good the Fit was until 2 years after it was discontinued when I started working at a Honda dealer. Had I known, I'd have gotten one new back in 2017.
helloitsmehb@reddit
Why do you like them ? I’m looking at a used one
SkylineFTW97@reddit
They're fun to drive, pack more cargo space than cars larger than it, super easy to work on, and get fantastic MPG. Plus being a Honda, it has one of the best manual transmissions out there (I only own stickshifts, so that matters a lot to me).
zeilstar@reddit
I drive an 05 CR-V. The second row reclines about 45 degrees, and the front seats fold all the way back to line up with the seat of the second row. Makes for a fairly comfy set up if you have to hunker down. Good for a nap, not great for regular sleep.

IMHO, I think the sweet spot for cars is 1996-2006, give or take a few years. OBDII helped with diagnostics, but you still had metal engine components, instead of the plastic crap.
MishkaShubaly@reddit
Ha, totally agree, same window for me. I call it at 2006 because those were the last best Chevy trucks and suburbans but my wife has a 2007 Element and I have a ‘95 XJ so we’re a little flexible.

460nanometers@reddit
Holy cow the B2000! Not my vehicle but a work truck (lawn/tree service). Drove it for years, totally indestructible. Massively overloaded, suspension bottomed out and then hook up a trailer? Sure. Boss too cheap to change the oil or do any maintenance? Just keeps going. Still remember the exact feel of the five-speed shifter.
revocer@reddit (OP)
What makes the Mazda version more desirable than the Ford version?
Apostasyisfreedom@reddit
The predecessor to the Mazda B series was the Ford Courier ( I have a '78 Courier which is the clunky (and ugly) old Mazda fitted with Fords excellent 2.3 engine) The B series replaced this ugly flat-glass duckling with a small truck that was Japanese elegant, beautiful in every respect .
illthrowawaysomeday@reddit
Before 1994 they were completely different trucks.
Mazda was a true Japanese light duty truck. Not very fancy or powerful, but economical and does its job well. Ford ranger is just the cheapest option ford is willing to give you.
My dad had an extra cab b2600i. That little truck hauled so many loads of rock/sand/dirt overloaded to the bumpstops up the longest hill in town. It towed literally hundreds of cars with a tow rope when he was helping our mechanic. It went to every single 4wd Beach around here and climbed every mountain with some semblance of a road. I took it to dozens beach parties loaded with all my oversized Polynesian friends, while we carefully drove around all kinds of big lifted Chevy/Ford trucks. Camping trips, weekly beach runs, drunk donuts on the sand, you name it. One of the best vehicles I've ever had the pleasure of "owning" even though it wasn't even mine.

I had an ‘82 Mazda B2200 5spd. It had a fairly long bed, and most importantly a Perkins diesel engine. To be clear, it was not “fast”, but it would do highway speed no problem and got 40mpg and had a fairly large tank (forget size, but it would go 500-600 on a tank). Drove that for a few years then "upgraded" to an LS1 6 speed Camaro that felt slower in every way.
beertruck77@reddit
300 Lb-Ft torque and 2700 pounds makes for a pretty quick car. I just wish Ford had offered them with steeper gearing than a 3.08 rear end. 3.55 from the factory would have made those things Corvette fast.

Interesting.
Where I live GMT800s are a mundanely common sight, I see multiple every time I drive. Lots of them seemingly in good shape, or restored/upgraded, but many of them are definitely clapped out as well. I probably see a GMT400 or older squarebody C/K every time I drive too, but in much lower numbers. I see a decent number of Ford Panther platform cars too, but usually they're Mercuries or Lincolns, not that many people drive surplus police interceptors.

351 Cleveland isn't classified as a big block, it had most of the same dimensions typical of other small blocks. Much like the 350 and 400 Chevies were small blocks as well. Not to be confused with the Pontiac 400, which was a big block. As was the Pontiac 326. The 351C shares a lot more in common with the 302 and 351 Windsor than any of the big blocks.

contrabonum@reddit
The XJ hits a pretty sweet spot in automotive tech especially the 97-99s. The platform is old enough to be mechanically pretty simple, the aesthetics feel pretty timeless, but they have just enough modern features to make them really usable. They have OBD-II and Airbags, but still have great visibility, and are easy to work on.
I wish they made the Comanche with the same, they only made them till 92. Though it is common to essentially update a Comanche to That spec with a donor XJ.
Interesting-Dingo994@reddit
The XJ body style is timeless and wouldn’t look out of place.

The only brand new car that really appeals to me is the Suzuki Jimny, and it’s not sold in the US.
But my answer is the 1st Gen Honda CRV. I own one, but it’s 26 years old (1999). It had low miles when I bought it, and it’s been reliable for me, but still needs little things every now and then. It’s a great car that has some neat design features, is lightweight, fairly spacious, while also being pretty small and nimble. Owning mine, I can really understand why CRVs and other crossover SUVs became so popular. But the modern ones feel watered down, less SUV and more like a tall, slightly shorter station wagon.
90s Hondas are great. I really like simple cars with a minimum of tech and fluff, and this car has everything I want. I can do some light off-roading, I can get almost 30mpg, I can use the folding table for impromptu picnics, it rocks

Underpowered (3cyl), sure, but it didn't matter 'cause it didn't weigh anything and it had 5 speeds and you had to use 'em all. Went like a skate through the snow because it had proper 4wd, the skinny tires and the extreme light weight. It would be a lot harder to do today because it would have to weigh an addition 800lbs (or whatever) due to modern required safety equipment. The doors on those things were thin!
