Western Express just assigned me a load that has “chargeback”. If it’s late, they charge the driver (me) $200. Is there any truth to this???

Check your orientation paperwork to see if you gave them permission to claw chargebacks from your pay. If you are a w2 employee, this is illegal unless you gave them permission.

Please give the title, part, and section of this "law". As far as I know, Safehaven has a very specific meaning in the regularions (49 CFR § 397.5(d)(3)) regarding where you can park your Division 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3 Hazmat explosives unattended and nothing to do with HOS.

I used to find sleeping sitting more comfortable than laying down. I typically don't let myself sleep sitting so I don't form the habit. Thanks for highlighting this. I totally agree with you.

Even though the APU exemption was made on the Federal level, it does not require states or DC to allow the exception. CA, DC, KY, NC, and RI do not allow the exception. The APU must be working. You must have a written certificate of the APU weight. The exception is for the weight of your APU up to 400/550 lbs depending on the state, it's not just a blanket 400 lbs.

I have never made less than 60k year trucking. My first year I worked my ass off and stayed out the entire year OTR. I averaged over 3000 mi a week @ $0.38 a mile and I don't really recommend that. I recommend a skilled trade that can benefit from a CDL. There is still money in trucking, you just have to be willing to do what other people won't or can't do.

I had the same thing happen to me. I PC for 14 Miles driving to a TA that had a movie theater and a strip mall near by before going a 48. 4 days later, DOT station in Colorado kept me for two hours looking at my route with Google maps, looking for places I could have stopped. I finally told them to write the ticket or let me go and one of the other DOT officers got me out of there.

I don't understand how you are W-2 and still paying expenses. Assuming that the numbers work out, you are going to be taxed on those expenses, because you can't deduct them as a W2.

Usually don't get detention at meat packer. In my experience, the appointments are set up so that they have 48 hours to load a trailer. Did you get the same trailer you brought? When I was out that way the company I was with had a trailer pool and I had to wait 10-12 hours for my load to be ready. Contract stated I had to drive 400 miles before stopping. So we always left with a fresh clock. Definitely done dirty at 40 hours though.

Recaps

Financial-Prize9691@reddit

It can give you flexibility to maximize your time. Understanding your clock and how to legally work it is one of the most important skills in your job after driving the truck. In a perfect world if you run out your clock every day you can get more miles doing a reset every week. Practically when I was running recaps I could work 8.25 hours a day and never take a day off for reset. Doing long runs at 60 MPH average, that's 3255 miles a week. It gives me plenty of time for p/u and delivery without cutting into my day. Doing long runs working 11.5 hours a day at 60 MPH average I can make 3600 miles a week. The difference is doing recaps I am getting plenty of rest during the week without getting a day off and doing a reset I am constantly rolling only getting time off on my 34. It also allows me to take advantage of opportunities.Let's say make my delivery and see a load for p/u Today and delivery tomorrow, 500 miles total, but I only have 8 hours on my clock. If I have at least 3 hours on my Recap, I have the option of picking up that load as long as I can get my 10 in between p/u and delivery.

This. Make it to the shipper on time log OD check in. PC to resthaven, do a sleeper split. PC back to shipper, go OD. Drive line back to the resthaven and finish split. If you are concerned with DOT, Drive line to shipper and drive line back to finish split.

That is not correct. Some states require a CDL if the GVWR of the combination is over 26,000 lbs or lenght of the combination is over 45 ft. Some states also require a class B non CDL or a special endorsement for RV's if they are over 26,000 or are towing.

If you can swing it, it's awesome. Most of the time we just get to drive by interesting places and never get to see them. You have to make an effort to set yourself up for that. When I was living out of my truck, my company let me take my home time wherever, so I did my sightseeing on my "home" time.

Financial-Prize9691@reddit

If you can run it and the load times work out, it's actually the most efficient use of the truck for a solo driver, why would a company mind? That's 4k miles a week at 60 mph avg. I would try to do this when I was running hard, but it is hard to get that consistent.

I was using my father's house for a while, but if you don't have something like that that, you are supposed to use the home terminal of your company. You are officially classed as a migrant worker when you live in your truck. When I was a company driver, my company told me straight up that they would let me go over doing that, because they can't pay you per diem pay when you are using their address and both of you would have to pay full taxes on your income.
