Is trucking a “last resort” career?

I was using my father's house for a while, but if you don't have something like that that, you are supposed to use the home terminal of your company. You are officially classed as a migrant worker when you live in your truck. When I was a company driver, my company told me straight up that they would let me go over doing that, because they can't pay you per diem pay when you are using their address and both of you would have to pay full taxes on your income.

Would you count this as tanker experience, without the trailer part?

Owner-Operators: how much $$ are you losing to pay detention because of blank BOL?

Posted by Elegant-Aide-8850@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 10 comments

Financial-Prize9691@reddit

If detention is on my rate con. I notify the broker before I go into detention, write the time in and out on my bol and get my broker to send me a corrected rate con with detention listed before sending POD. The rate con is a contract between you and the broker not the shipper/receiver. Most decent brokers don't mind. It all depends on how your master contract with the broker is written, you know, the carrier packet you set up.

Dude, I tried to keep my truck clean with a dog. I had no idea how bad he shed. Under my bunk in the toolbox it looked like I had a carpet. I sold one of my trucks and the guy that bought it from me and I had to completely take the interior apart to clean all the dog hair out. It worked out because he wanted to put some insulation in and got me to help.

I wish I had gotten into it sooner. I would have been retired by now. Too many people I trusted talked me out of it. I finally did it as a last resort, but it was a good fit for me. I was approaching 40 with 2 degrees I hadn't used in a decade, I was a restaurant GM with degrees in computer science. Company got acquired, I got downsized and couldn't find anything close to what I was making. Within 3 years I paid off over 100k in debt and helped my adult child through college. I was single and lived on the road that whole time, but it gave me the financial freedom I hadn't had in a while.

Just for fun. Does anyone else absolutely hate air ride seats or is it just me?

I'm 6' I can't use my sun visor on the driver's side or I can't see far enough down the road. It allows me to keep my legs less at a sharp angle. I'm at that age where I am worried about circulation.

I'm pretty sure that the EU truckers don't speak the language of every country they drive through, yet somehow they manage. The German version of the Class A is given in 12 other languages. English, French, Greek, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Croatian, Spanish, Turkish, and Arabic.

Somebody broke my trailer seal…

Posted by bigballsdeluxe@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 57 comments

Financial-Prize9691@reddit

Depends on the receiver and what's being shipped. Some absolutely won't unload it. Some will ask you what your seal number is without checking it. Some don't care if there is a seal or not.

I have prescription hearing aids that connect to my phone, it is marked on my medical card that I need them to drive. I don't really use them to talk on the phone as I don't have a company policy about headsets and I use a blue parrot for that.

They don't have parking around here, but they'll hire you from around here, and then you park the truck at home. Has anyone worked for a company like this?

Backing in a day cab is so much easier than backing a sleeper. It'll help with your confidence but they might not count it as experience just depends on how hot your market is.

Dry van drivers , are we supposed to check on the load and make sure it is secured ?

Posted by East_Indication_7816@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 24 comments

Financial-Prize9691@reddit

I run my own authority and I check every single time because a Freight claim can cost me more than I make off the load. The last company I drove for had me sign a piece of paper that said I would pay $1,000 for any insurance payout that was deemed driver error. Even as a company driver having to deal with a restack or reload is costing me hours and miles. Most loads can be checked in less than 5 minutes.

What kind of driver are you?

Experienced O/O. Apart from Repair Cost, what should I expect to pay to start a company and start driving Intrastate with a daycab?

Financial-Prize9691@reddit

40k after all your down payments, even then you are left with your balls swinging in the wind. I know some guys that have made it on a wing and a prayer, but 50% of new trucking companies fail in the first 18 months and 80% fail in the first 5 years. They fail mainly because of underestimating operating expenses. You have to remember you have to pay your bills even when the truck's not moving. Let's say that I'm down for a 15k repair. That's at least 2 weeks down. That's another 12k lost revenue and the expenses don't stop. I just blew a transmission on my oldest truck and it's not worth dropping a new one in it. I bought another used truck that I have already put in the shop. I am still waiting to haul because I bought the truck out of state and Florida makes you jump through hoops to get it registered, 4 weeks down. That's at least 24k in lost revenue, 7k for the down payment, 3k for shop work and 1.5 k for the tow. I only keep 40k cash on hand in the business account and I have almost burned through it. After I start hauling again, I'll have to work on building the reserve back up.

Financial-Prize9691@reddit

I just purchased my 4th used truck and every single one of them has had mechanical issues the first year. My average has been about 25k in repairs the first year. I don't know if I'm a good source on recommendations for buying a truck. I've even had a mechanic with me and still got stuck with a shop Queen. Maybe someone else out here has some good advice.

I'm heavier than that empty. If I'm doing dry van in Wyoming and there's the wind advisory for empty and light high profile vehicle. I don't chance it if I'm under 30k Freight.

From my understanding, Short haul operations give an exception to having a RODS on the driver. [FMCSA Record of duty status.](https://csa.fmcsa.dot.gov/safetyplanner/MyFiles/SubSections.aspx?ch=23&sec=69&sub=178) [FMCSA Scope of Rules under 395.1. Short haul is defined in e (1)](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/subtitle-B/chapter-III/subchapter-B/part-395/subpart-A/section-395.1) I've been bitten before by rules being written in a way that overrides an exception so I'm not 100% guaranteeing this is correct.

Financial-Prize9691@reddit

Dude, yes that guy was an ass. I'm out here over a decade and I'm still new. The problem isn't old hands, it's just people being people, especially when they are anonymous. There have been so many times I have just gone up to a driver with an older truck and just asked for help or information about something and gotten that information or help, I can not count. The problem is that with the current JIT inventory systems and tight micromanaged schedules, drivers don't have the time to help out other drivers anymore IRL. No more sitting at the diner soaking up stories from the old hands. Most of the people that have the knowledge we need aren't on reddit, they are doing their 45 minute pre trip or working on their truck. We are just learning from each other, newbies helping newbies.

Do you guys wear your seatbelts?

OMG 15 years and I just found out about the slack adjuster thing on the seatbelt. I broke my collar bone in my 20's In a motorcycle accident and the seatbelt causes me physical pain when I drive even with the seatbelt pad. Whelp, I'm a convert, I have no excuses now. Thank you!

I’m only in my first week trucking and winter storm baptized me . Should I quit now ? What to do in this situation ?

Posted by East_Indication_7816@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 142 comments

Financial-Prize9691@reddit

I remember driving in Wyoming when a surprise winter storm hit. It was blowing snow and foggy at night on a back State road in the middle of nowhere and the only way I could tell where the road was cuz it was the place where there wasn't trees, no where to pull off and I knew if I stopped that I would get stuck. I was waiting when the customer opened the next morning and they told me that the pass I went through was supposed to be closed, but the police couldn't get up there to close it off at the turn out. I was too green to know any better.

So im bout due for a set of drive tires...awhile back a guy on here said he got 250k miles out of a set of Yokohamas. Can anyone confirm they've gotten anything close to 250k from a set of tires. Any brand.

Posted by bigpierider@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 32 comments

Financial-Prize9691@reddit

I got 360k on an axle of Bridgestone Ecopia and 300K on the other axle. I'm running Yokohama now and I moved them to my trailer at 230k with approximately 6/32 left. Mainly interstate driving in Southeast.

Financial-Prize9691@reddit

So someone disagreed with you and your first response is to immediately make a personal attack against someone with a different opinion. I run a small fleet. I pay a local service to detail my trucks between drivers. My drivers sign a piece of paper that says I can charge them back for any additional fees if the detail clean is billed for more than 3 hours.

How long do you usually go without stopping?

Posted by Bonerjamz_666@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 179 comments

Financial-Prize9691@reddit

I like to drive as long as possible if I'm driving a long day. It's not super trucker BS it's because when I do that the last 3 hours fly by. It also lets me decide if I'm going to call an early day if I'm trying to save time on a tight schedule. Some times drive 8 and 10 off followed by drive 8 and 10 off can cut an hour out of your trip time. My body tells me I need to stop every 2-3 hours to get some light exercise to get my heart rate up for 10-20 minutes. I do whatever I feel, as long as I'm saving my deliveries on time.

Can employer request I put cargo in sleeper?

Transporting your own non-hazardous product to your own facility does not require a BOL. Most Amazon trucks are third party and a BOL is required if any outside of your company is involved.

I don't know what they are doing now, but 13 years ago, that's about what I was making on 2,000 mi a week. Rate per mile wasn't super high, but they paid decent for accessorial. Extra stop, extra hoses, border crossing, going over GWB, layover and detention. That was before they went public.
