Do you guys wear your seatbelts?

Posted by thedailyworkwr@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 201 comments

Dumb question, but I've been noticing a lot of drivers not use their seatbelt. Ive heard some people get annoyed of it, and its an ego thing. Any thoughts

How tiny does one's cock have to be, that they see not wearing a seatbelt as "badass"? That ego is gonna be more than bruised when they go through the fuckin windshield. And it's honestly very hard to feel any sympathy.

I know the stereotype is that Americans are fat, but I don't think even C. Paul McCheeseburger Jnr in his ~~heavy duty lardarsemobile~~ mobility scooter is going to cause you to go flying through the windscreen if you hit him with a semi.

Don’t even have to be a pedestrian. I hit a Heave on an expressway at night, and if I had not been strapped in I would have be thrown completely out of the seat and had zero chance of maintaining control of the truck.

Have experienced that. Drove a school bus while in high school ( mid 80's). Swerved hard to avoid a car and ended up in first row of seats on passenger side. Bus ended up in a stand of trees. The school district didn't think I should drive a bus anymore. Go figure. At least I didn't have any students onboard.

I wear my seatbelt anytime the truck is moving. Even at slow speeds shit can happen. I CYA everything possible. I've been in incidents where something was out of my control but because the videos leading up to them all showed me fallowing all the laws/company requirements I actually have 2 non preventable accidents and 0 preventable accidents. I wish those 2 didn't exist but I couldn't change stupid. 1 Had a truck passing me on the left speeding I was doing 55 in a 55 and slowed down to 52 when they were passing and a cop ahead turned on their lights and the truck merged into me he got a ticket for speeding going 15 over and making an unsafe lane change hitting me. the 2nd one I was going 40 in a 45 and a car ran a stop sign. I was already on my breaks before he even crossed into the intersection but I couldn't stop before hitting him. Which he was lucky if I was going the speed limit and never slowed down he would have hit the underside of the side of my trailer.

A friend of mine at my carrier was let go because he got a seatbelt warning. With older trucks, black seatbelt and black shirt it was a little harder to allege. With orange seatbelts its a gimme in states that seatbelt is a primary offense. I've worn my seatbelt since my teens in 1984.

I do produce delivery and I'm constantly in and out of my truck, so I always forget to wear it. However, once I'm on the highway I always put it back on. Funny enough, I was with a co driver the other day during a storm and I put my seatbelt on. He immediately looked over and said "uh oh, must've got nervous" 😂😂

I got a $220 ticket a few years ago for not properly wearing my seatbelt. The part that goes across the chest, I put it under my arm. I’m short (female) so that part was touching my face. Nowadays I put some slack in it and wear it correctly. I do see driver not wearing their seatbelts though. Super dangerous.

I used to find my seatbelt annoying, I drive a KW T880 2022 model. I have DDs, I cannot raise or lower the seatbelt anchor point, so I would get "rope burns" on my neck from the seatbel because of my chest, it won't sit correctly. I bought a seatbelt cover: https://a.co/d/1s4mpBA Now, no more being accused of making out with someone based on marks on my neck.

I have seen someone say they will crush cars so they don't need a seatbelt. I ask what happens when you hit a tree or bridge support? No answer. I went to Italy and no one wore them, I lasted one journey and I had to put one on, especially with the way they drive over there. Not wearing one does not make you a supertrucker.

Not always, because some of our old trucks don't actually have seat belts (and aren't required to). They don't see much use, because they're old and slow. But they are useful for specific jobs, and cost us nothing to keep around -- hence they survive. If the truck has a seatbelt, I'm wearing it. And so is anybody in the passenger seat.

Australia used to have a problem with people not wearing their seat belts in trucks but then they realised the reason why most people don't wear it is because they're irritated by it. They made a law that the driver's side must have a seat mounted seat belt so it doesn't rub when the seat goes up and down and use went up quite a lot.

I don’t like the idea of losing access to controls in the event I get tossed out of my seat, so of course I wear a seat belt. There has been one occasion that I didn’t, but I made sure it was towards the end of my trip, there was little to no traffic, and I knew the roads. Reason I didn’t was because my nipples were very sensitive that day, and the seat belt irritated my right nipple.

My first time driving with air brakes, in a tow truck, my instructor did not (and still doesn’t) wear his seatbelt and when I panicked because I was not aware of the delay between the brake pedal and drums, I stomped on the pedal and he flew into the windshield. It was the final nail in the safety focused part of me. Always wear that damn seatbelt. Plus, the road nearest our base of operations is so rough (for a maintained, paved road) that I would absolutely bounce out of my air seat if I wasn’t buckled.

In the truck, 100% of the time I’ll wear my seatbelt. In my car, it’s more like 20% of the time. One winter, almost 11yrs ago, a FedEx truck came into my lane (slow/right lane) and clipped my rear end (basically pit maneuvered me) and sent me sideways down the highway towards the center median. Another semi was cruising in the fast lane trying to pass the fedex driver who was camping the middle lane and I got t-boned by him at 60+mph. The only reason I’m alive is because when I lost control and saw the other semis headlights, I leaped out of my seat onto the center armrest towards my then-gf/now wife who was riding shotgun. The door and side panels got pushed in about a foot and half. I would’ve been crushed if I was wearing my seatbelt and had remained in my seat. Everyone who saw the accident and pulled over to stop and help were shocked and amazed that I walked out of that wreck. I only suffered a few dislocated ribs, crazy whiplash and minor scratches from the impact. The car was a 2004 Ford Taurus if anyone is curious. Which is surprising that it held up to that impact.

Yes I will get fired if I don’t tho. First time not wearing it is 18 month probation then if you don’t again in those 18 months it’s termination. My gig runs a strict program lol.

I didn't forever. I still don't sometimes. But if the weather feels a little dicey I do now. Reason being, I seen a truck get blown over a while back. When I went to help the guy out of truck his right arm and the right side of his face look like hamburger meat where he hit that passenger window and slid across the dirt.

Always while driving, i have cameras facing me, not a lot of money to donate to the police, and it’s obviously the best thing to do. I however will take off my belt while backing, or if I’m moving around on private property I might leave it off. For the former i want it off so i can move about more easily and who knows how many times I’m stopping and stepping out, and the latter i’m just being lazy.

I'm a safety manager for a major trucking company based out of Texas. A year ago I had a driver that noddee off without a seat belt on, ran off the road and down into a ravine where he was launched out of the driver's seat and he broke his back. He ended up on the floor between the driver's seat and the passenger seat and had to lay down there for 2 hours until they could winch the truck out of the ravine and then use the jaws of life to extricate him out of the cab of the truck. So yeah I'm 100% for seat belts.

When I started 30 years ago, and lot of drivers either refused to wear them, or wore the lap belt with the shoulder belt behind them. Then again, it wasn't uncommon back then to see us standing on the top step to back up. I wear mine, but it's because I was an EMT before I became a driver and I've seen the results of not wearing one.

I don't. I'm old enough to have run trucks from before spring brakes were a thing. Guess what happens if you go down a mountain and you run out of air. You don't want a seatbelt to be in your way when you jump. Furthermore, the idea that a seatbelt will save your life isn't true. It just holds you in place or cuts you in half.

Helped clean up an accident where a driver decided to drive off an embankment instead of rolling on the freeway, it was a newer Volvo so it had an airbag in the steering wheel. Mini fridge and lots of other items from the sleeper blew through the windshield of the truck. Driver had his seatbelt on, didn't necessarily walk away, but a back injury, compared to what would've happened without the airbag and seatbelt that's pretty fuckin lucky.

Dump end drivers too often don't while tipping over a load. They usually tip to the right, which you are getting your skull, neck and shoulder suplexed WWE into the passenger window on the ground from 12' up on the turnbuckle. Then get dropkicks to the jaw from your CB and 32 oz monster can.

When I'm plowing for the state (like now) it's mandatory "optional." Basically if the troopers are doing seat belt checks they just call the district office as a "professional courtesy" to ask that we use them 😆. But when I'm hauling private during the summer months, fuck yea I wear my belt. If it's too uncomfortable get yourself one of those yellow clamps that relieve the tension on your shoulder and lap. A seat belt ticket is a lousy way to get an inspection. The less attention, the better.

When we had driver facing cameras installed that was the biggest surprise. Our manager above our account told me 4 drivers just refused after multiple warnings. They were obviously fired. I’ve only been hit twice. One guy who hit me was driving a gravel dump truck, and took the offramp too fast. He went over and slid into me. He was not wearing a seatbelt, and when I and another guy came up to his truck, he was laying against the door that was on the ground with lacerations all over his head with an obvious concussion because he was dazed. I just don’t get it. Just wear the stupid thing.

I am never going to be in an accident, I’m just too fucking good. However, keeping my seat belt on keeps my back straight. I developed a really sore back by first three years not wearing a belt and would be unable to function when I got home. I have a tendency to lean forward when I’m driving and this will fuck up your back.
