Does my job hate me?? 😭
Please tell me I'm not tripping, I'm still relatively new to this, only 5 weeks on the job so far but something just doesn't sit right with this Also there's a bit of a lie, I didn't HAVE to restack the pallets, I offered to do so because they said they would pay me extra, and only afterward did I find out it was $25 each.

It's illegal to begin with, work without pay is federally illegal. Then on top of that they are pushing you close to below minimum wage, which is itself illegal. Find a new company that doesn't try to treat you like slave labor.

robexib@reddit

See, that only applies to jobs under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Guess which job happens to not fall under that?

Negative1Positive2@reddit

If you mean Motor Carrier Exemption in FLSA Section 13(b)(1) that only applies to us not getting overtime. We are still guaranteed pay, if even only minimum wage for every minute we are working, including on duty time per https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/29/785.16?hl=en-US We get paid for driving https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/29/785.38?hl=en-US Only exception that matters is if he is 1099. If he has a W2 he's covered.

Plenty of drivers here who work for well under minimum wage when you factor in they work 70/week. The law is toothless for drivers.
View on Reddit #71633646

Negative1Positive2@reddit

Your right. Most drivers don't know the law and most companies bank on that. One simple complaint with the Department of Labor via dol.gov/agencies/whd/contact/complaints and the federal government is legally required to investigate and make right the situation for free. Companies know they are breaking the law, but they save more money each year doing it than they do if they are caught. Even though repeatedly breaking this labor law gives employees DOUBLE what they are legally entitled. I'm a trucker, not a lawyer but there is a reason I know all this and have a history of telling people on this sub about it.

Trump's administration seems intent on gimping that. Again, the law is toothless.

If the company has been treating you right otherwise, ask for extra compensation and if not, just take the hit. Sometimes you have to eat a bad load, but don’t be the go to guy for getting fucked over.

In what world do you take a hit for a company? They won't take a hit for you. That is hours of unpaid labor. Wake up dude.

I honestly don't disagree with him, it's my first trucking job, I'm just here for experience right now. Yeah I like money but I knew shit like this would come up, just don't know how exactly to deal with it

Look up Don Hummer Trucking and see if they're hiring. That was my last job before I switched to a daily to be with family. They pay .60 a mile but I almost always had 2.2-3k miles per week. Bonuses every quarter, only one camera facing the front of the truck, and they don't micromanage anything. I had a great time there and actually miss it. 1k a week isn't the best paying, but it sounds a hell of a lot better than what you're making. They also dispatch from home, so while you may have to drive to Cedar Rapids to do orientation and shit, you take the truck home with you every time you go home.

You also get paid for all miles. I had to pull an empty from Albuquerque to DFW area and it was fully paid.

Right now you're experiencing an assfucking. Start looking for other jobs. Explain to recruiters what you've outlined here. Try to start with one of the bigger carriers. Even swift will be better than this.

As I said, if they’re otherwise a great company and they go out of their way to look out for him, do it. Sometimes you should cover a bad load. That many unpaid miles is really pushing it for a 90 mile load though. I’d ask to be compensated more or have a fantastic next load to make up for it. It doesn’t sound like they are a good company to me though, because a good company wouldn’t ask you to do this without offering extra pay in my opinion.

Yeah my company has sent me deadhead 300+ miles if they need to. Always get paid.
View on Reddit #71607685

I don't *technically* get paid deadhead, but I get a metric fuckton for loaded rate enough that it works out. Tbf deadheading is common in my business since I'm not hauling vans/flatbeds.

It sounds like he isn’t getting paid deadhead from the texts. I wouldn’t want that load even if all miles paid, I don’t get out of bed for 330 miles.
View on Reddit #71553530

I saw the paid 90 miles part but it didn't register. I wouldn't do it either and be looking for someone that pays all miles, which should be anywhere else.

How to tell them no? First you say “no” then you say “I quit” and hand them the keys
View on Reddit #71596850

onlyBotsdownvote-me@reddit

> How do I tell them no The best way to tell them "no," is to place the tip of your tongue against the forward roof of your mouth. Parse your lips slightly, and this will produce the "N" sound. Ensure that your lips are shaped in an "O" position. Now, release the tongue from the roof of your mouth, and this should create the vowel, "O". When put together, this will create the sound of *Nnnooo.*

The question is... What are you average DH and Average loaded Miles a Month? I averaged 150 DH miles per load over the year. Sometimes it was 300 and sometimes it was 5 miles. I am an O/O with my own authority and self dispatch.

This is why I either pay %, hourly, or salary. Mileage pay is the biggest BS of this industry.
View on Reddit #71556478

Tribbis@reddit

Shit I did % otr and I love mileage, granted ltl. My company pays 2 drivers the full mileage if we cushion to pick up another truck at another terminal. I’m sure that’s standard for ltl, but it seems wild to me after hearing stories like this
View on Reddit #71564941

xDoomKitty@reddit

The way I see it, I might want a driver to pick up a 200 miles load because it pays $1,200. Mileage drivers won't wanna do that. % drivers would love it cus it's an easy $300 for them. Salary and hourly won't really care if the load is short or not.

View on Reddit #71566351

Typical-City1455@reddit

I've read through these comments and here's the question I would be asking "what's my load after this one?" Sometimes the shitty load is worth it to get you in the right place for the really good load. If they haven't found you another load or its shifty too, tell them either they pay you percentage on this load or they can find someone else to run it, because the only way they took a 90m load with a 250mile deadhead is if they are making a couple thousand on that load, it aint worth shit for you but theyre not gonna want to scrap that load
View on Reddit #71560627

Obvious-Glove-7253@reddit

It’s line work? Why would it matter? The whole point to driving line haul is for the structure? OTR you can understand. Freight markets change on a dime at times especially when you’re running spots to get back to a good dedicated client etc. Line haul isn’t that, there should be no excuse as to why this driver is getting fucked on empty miles and then shafted on the load.
View on Reddit #71561312

Typical-City1455@reddit

Yea if thats what's going on none of that makes any sense, I didnt know the hired for stuff like that straight out of cdl school. This dude needs to quit this job. I dont say that lightly, the job market is crap rn, and he might have a hard time finding another job depending on his experience level but honestly even the worst company I can think of still pays empty miles.
View on Reddit #71565565

Georgiaboy03@reddit

Sounds like a company guy, if thats the case he should be getting paid DH miles too. If not, he needs to find another company for little bit a mile. As a company driver, you can say no, but they can say bring the truck back and go home too. Most times a short load will lead to a long load. They may be trying to get him to a better area for freight. Otherwise, as a company driver either drive what they tell you or find another job. Forced dispatch is a real thing.
View on Reddit #71565505

The_Vass_76@reddit

I’m of the same reasoning as another commenter here: what company doesn’t pay deadhead miles?? Sure, I understand not paying deadhead for going home (OTR specifically), but if I’m going to pickup said load from said location then I’m getting paid for the miles I drive to pickup said load. Then load pay to live load the freight (speaking in terms of what I haul) if it’s a live load type of load, and then the I’m being paid the miles to deliver the load. Way my company works is for loads less than 300 miles for delivery I get short haul pay instead of cpm because the short haul pay will generally be more pay than cpm for the short miles. But, I’m still paid for ALL miles driven. Whether it’s short or long haul doesn’t really matter as long as I’m paid accordingly. If my company doesn’t pay the empty miles then I don’t move my truck.
View on Reddit #71556414

Q7017@reddit

Depends on the work. If you've got a special trailer that can only haul certain commodities and backhauls are nigh impossible, then you charge like $5-8/mile (more for shorties) to make up for guaranteed deadheading. It works for me, but I can see why it wouldn't in the doorswinging business.
View on Reddit #71562565

The_Vass_76@reddit

Yeah. Not a door swinger myself. Not sure about OP. I haul glass and use 3 different trailer types. A double drop, step deck, and flatbed trailers with conestoga tarp kits. Glass sizes can vary by load and trailers can be switched out as needed depending where they are being stored. If I have to switch to a different trailer for a load and I can get that trailer on my way to the shipper then those miles still count towards my empty miles to swap that trailer out.

Content_Shoulder_635@reddit (OP)

I see, I wasn't aware of this, but there's plenty of things I'm still not aware of due to this being my first trucking job. All things considered I may just take the hit. It's honestly the first time a load has been this bad, but it would have to be my absolute last time
View on Reddit #71557216

The_Vass_76@reddit

🤔 I’m cpm as well and I’m at $0.71/mile. The empty miles you posted were 250. That’s $175.00 (before taxes) that you’re willing to part with? I know I wouldn’t part way with that amount. No matter how much it looks like you’re taking it for the team or whatever way you want to rationalize it. Sorry boss. This truck isn’t going anywhere in regards to a load unless I’m paid. It’s literally that simple. There are other companies out there that don’t do this shit. If it becomes a regular occurrence I would bounce.
View on Reddit #71557715

Socketz11@reddit

This is called a "Charity Run" and you make it abundantly clear that you are doing them a favor, and in return you want a 1200 to 2500 mile run for helping them out of a bind. I have right of refusal, but before I flat out tell dispatch to Fuck Off, I will negotiate a good run, or some extra home time. Dont ever let them get away with this, without standing up for yourself and telling them, " I can be home in my own bed and flipping burgers if I wanted to make $50 a day, pay me, or make it right. By tomorrow I want a run to Hawaii"
View on Reddit #71561841

Obvious-Glove-7253@reddit

I don’t know many people who don’t pay empty miles, that’s fucking wrong. Something ain’t right especially if you’re linehaul like you shouldnt be getting fucked on empty miles and shafted on loaded. This whole thing is a red neon flashing light.
