I guess asking for advice makes me a terrible driver

Posted by Sada_Yukinaga_2@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 59 comments

If you're 20 years of experience is to talk down on someone for asking about a issue with a truck you probably never driven because you stand by 379 or W900 all the way then you're a jackass. At the end of the day a mechanic had to tell me my engine locked up because of freightliner making a plastic oil pickup tube and it wasn't my fault

Dude's just angry he picked a career he taught himself to hate. I've been in this field for 18 years and I'm still loving every minute. If you ever have questions feel free to ask. That dude is just an asshole.

Don't let encountering these type of shit stains deter you from asking questions. If you don't know something, ASK. Always ask questions and ask them twice.

Reddit is just the new cb radio for yall “truckers” to cry about shit. Stfu and get down the road. No one really cares 😊

Every time I’ve had to interact with that dude, it’s been negatively. He’s the evil version of 12 inch pickle.

WilyNGA@reddit

Let's see, you didn't provide what he actually responded to, and you seem to have your posts hidden, so we can't check. Then you instigate it all by calling him a derogatory term. Then you come and post all this - and no, I did not read past the first picture because this is Reddit, and it is almost a given to get this kind of response.

Comes with the territory of being a trucker, the low entry point makes it so that absolute dumbasses like this can weigh in. Look on the bright side, as bad as it is, this sub isn't nearly as bad as the other trucker forums 😂

That dude claiming peak drive time is before 5pm is a idiot 🙄. Old timer got to much time on they hands glad he got down voted trash ass trucker right there

"I own my knowledge" what an idiotic thing to even contemplate. Seriously, how do you defend that?

damato1218@reddit

Wtf does that even mean?
View on Reddit #72943451

ObeyMyStrapOn@reddit

it means he's a gatekeeper of knowledge until someone pays him. He's an asshole. And there are plenty of assholes who think just like this.
View on Reddit #72944967

MarkFinancial8027@reddit

That just seems so... Idiotic. I thought we were supposed to share our knowledge.
View on Reddit #72985249

homucifer666@reddit

In today's hustle grind mindset, knowledge you share for free is knowledge you can't charge desperate people $10-20 a month to gain access to.
View on Reddit #72987344

MarkFinancial8027@reddit

You don't have to grind if you have a budget and live within your means.
View on Reddit #72987540

homucifer666@reddit

That's the trouble; corporations are actively trying to stiff the working class in order to post ever bigger gains for shareholders. People are having to work 2-3 jobs just to make ends meet. Having a budget isn't enough to cover the growing disparity between work performed and earnings received. It's also why young people are trying so hard to start a YouTube/TikTok/etc channel that goes viral and can get sponsorships or at least enough fans to support them via memberships, because the alternative is getting dragged back to the rat race.

Ever stop and think… you could’ve been arguing with a AI bot? Most social media platforms are full of them and are getting pretty difficult to distinguish from actual people. I’ve noticed on Reddit, the overly aggressive negative comments are usually bots. If they’re not bots, it’s a true dumb ass that doesn’t deserve a second thought.

I've been driving for over 30 years now. I can tell you that those who gave you grief should have left the industry day 2 after they entered it. As a former driver trainer, the one thing EVERY trainee has always had access to is a way to reach out to me personally. Back when I started it was all payphones and pagers. I thought pagers were the best thing ever lol. My very first trainee still calls me and we chat about things during his last 20 yrs since I trained him. As far as a tight community, yes this industry has gone in a horrible direction. The reasoning is much broader than any 1 person has addressed here. Find a few good people and build a tight circle driver. Dont let the masses of asses discourage you.

I guess trucking is different. In sailing we say "there is noone that would love to talk and explain sailing more than an experienced sailor. The biggest risk for you to ask them is that you may get stuck for 4 hours listening to sailing stories and tips&tricks

Dude, yes that guy was an ass. I'm out here over a decade and I'm still new. The problem isn't old hands, it's just people being people, especially when they are anonymous. There have been so many times I have just gone up to a driver with an older truck and just asked for help or information about something and gotten that information or help, I can not count. The problem is that with the current JIT inventory systems and tight micromanaged schedules, drivers don't have the time to help out other drivers anymore IRL. No more sitting at the diner soaking up stories from the old hands. Most of the people that have the knowledge we need aren't on reddit, they are doing their 45 minute pre trip or working on their truck. We are just learning from each other, newbies helping newbies.

I love how people will say "Hah... These new guys don't know nothing! They're so stupid, they won't make it!" and leave it at that instead of actually teaching the next generation like they should. This goes for regular life just as much as it does trucking or any other job.
View on Reddit #72936351

wallyslambanger@reddit

I do both lol, I bitch and moan at the state of the industry and new drivers while I sit upon my bouncing throne (drivers seat) because it is cathartic. I also am extremely willing and eager to help drivers out whenever I can because I remember what it was like when I first started out.
View on Reddit #72958190

You have to realize, about half the posters in this sub are trolls. There are people who play some kind of trucking simulation game that pose in here as real truckers.
View on Reddit #72936685

MarkFinancial8027@reddit

The other half love to say, "I retired 5 years ago, I'm glad I did because the industry went to hell because of these new drivers" I got into this industry in 2018. I heard all this stuff about "trucking brotherhood" it was all a damn lie. If there was "brotherhood" it seems as if it was more like a white hood type shit, because all I see from old photographs are tons of white dudes, barely any minorities at all. "Trucking is ruined" is code for... Hell, you know damn well what it's code for.
View on Reddit #72940036

Justin_92@reddit

To be fair, I had a black guy spit on me on my way into the truck stop a couple of weeks back because I’m a bald white guy (I guess?). I can’t help it I started balding prematurely at 17.. :( I get what you’re saying though. There is *a lot* of hatred in this industry towards ethnic drivers, whether it be brown, black, or otherwise. It makes my skin crawl when another white driver just nonchalantly starts talking to me about some racist shit because he assumes I’m a racist just like him.

I'm an experienced driver and only call out new drivers if they are putting other drivers down. There is a hard core karma farming bunch that do that here and most of them I believe are trolls. Ya know, I am hard core OVR but also older with grown children. I have a great job at a family owned company. I also have cheap housing expenses because I built my house in 1999. So I am doing really good financially because my housing expenses are low. I am in the position, where we run loads east to e=west semi dedicated and do true long haul, from Miami Florida to the West Coast of the US. Running loads for cruise ships. We run the open market to come back. I could make more money running other places, but I love what I do. During the summer, we service the ships going to Alaska out of the PNW. I usually have 7 days to make my run and can run from Miami to LA in 4 and a half days and the PNW in 5. We do have to hump the freight to the back of the trailer last the ports, but I get 250 bucks for doing that, with an electric pallet jack. Best 30 minutes pay for work I have ever done.
View on Reddit #72939556

Troubador222@reddit

I get 150 bucks for driving into CA! 200 for HAZMAT. 250 humping the freight, usually a 2000 dollar Christmas bonus. Life is good!
