wtf is going on over at prime?
Saw this on fb and the person asked if it was industry standard. I knew prime did some fucked up shit but wow. Hopefully it’s fake?

I knew a guy who worked for prime and he said they keep that deposit no matter what. They will find something it could be literally a tiny scratch or mark and they will say they need to keep it

I worked for them for 5.5 years, and they never did that. They had a pet deposit for company drivers, but not just a general deposit. This is exactly how the pet deposit worked. Also, they gave me my pet deposit back when I turned in my truck.

I work here currently, and I've also worked for other megas, and I have had no issues here. I was even on my lunch, skys were getting dark, so I checked the weather. Just north of me (in my path) was predicted to have some violent storms, possibly tornadoes. So I contacted my manager, he told me to just shut down for the night and if needed, he would get my ETA updated, didn't even try to grief me. Even if this were true, at the last place I worked, I helped grab abandoned trucks and loads (small 70 truck outfit), and the way some people left their trucks were absolutely gnarly. Like, could be considered hazmat with the tractor itself, just disgusting. I have not heard of this policy or any mention of it, if I do, I will come back and admit that I'm wrong. But, for everyone hating, idk. I've been treated well, I've made decent money, facilities (not a fan of Pittston) are nice, as far as a mega, it would really be tough to beat.

We should just not work for these companies. As soon as they say “oh we take X amount of money from each paycheck until we reach X amount of dollars”, we should just hung up the call right there and call another company. From all of the drivers I know that worked for companies that took escrow from their paycheck, only 1 of them got his money back after leaving. All of The others just lost their money. But the problem is that there is always the new drivers that are still learning the industry, and the drivers that didn’t take care of their license and don’t have many options.

Well if a company is this petty then wouldn't work for them. I mean I get it there is slobs out there, but deal with them on their last check. No way 1k cost to clean a truck.

Pet deposit. Used to not be that way but some nasty mfs left some trucks that literally needed hazmat crew to clean. I was once sent to recover one in FL and it was so bad that they towed it back to Missouri instead.

Dude, I tried to keep my truck clean with a dog. I had no idea how bad he shed. Under my bunk in the toolbox it looked like I had a carpet. I sold one of my trucks and the guy that bought it from me and I had to completely take the interior apart to clean all the dog hair out. It worked out because he wanted to put some insulation in and got me to help.

Uh... what the hell? Jobs try this shit all the time. They cannot legally do this. They can FIRE you for damage you cause to the vehicle, and they can absolutely take you to civil court over damage you may have done to their vehicle, but holy shit do not ever let an employer pre-fine you. View on Reddit #79625417

Oh, so you’re actually almost so close. I’m sure you could get it if you try just a little bit harder. You see if the chef is doing all of that, that is when you fire them or go after them civilly for damages! You don’t then tell every other chef you hire they need to pre-pay in case they also start pissing everywhere and destroying property. You see the difference? And why, you envious? Clearly I was raised to have a bit of a backbone. Might seem odd when you spend your working day with your tongue on someone else’s boot, but it does help in the long run.

View on Reddit #79598797

ToyotaYaristotle@reddit

It’s not illegal but it’s not common or anything like a security deposit. You could utterly wreck a Swift truck and smear shit on the interior for good measure. They still aren’t going to withhold your wages because it’s illegal.
View on Reddit #79635269

Ornery_Ads@reddit

Can you give a source for that? Prime Inc is based out of Missouri, so let's use that as our point of reference (that is most likely, but not always, the state whose laws will apply to a driver for them anyway). Missouri allows employers to deduct wages from W2 employees to cover losses caused by the employee (damage to equipment, parking fines, etc) provided that the wage after deduction doesn't violate flsa. Deposits are legal, and common, in cases where just getting a job provides the employee with substantial benefit and/or substantial cost to the employer. A common example would be immigrants coming in on an employer sponsored visa or people that need training/licensureb to do a job (such as a CDL). It's legal and common for trucking companies to put in your new hire documents that you owe a few thousand for training if you leave before 1 year. You are contracting to return the truck relatively clean. How is this different? Also, how is a deposit upfront different from after a violation?
View on Reddit #79601766

ToyotaYaristotle@reddit

Keeping/withholding employee wages for damage to equipment is not the same as a paid training contract, not at all common, and in plenty of states this would be illegal. Missouri is an outlier in permitting this.
View on Reddit #79603732

SamuraiJono@reddit

View on Reddit #79634865

Oh ffs... Its no longer illegal. The limitations on deductions were removed in the BBB. As long as it doesn't reduce earnings below fed min wage, its now legal. So I am wrong. Good to know now, but goddamned.

Their particular charge should be on every company truck. So that the moron drivers don't treat it like well, not their equipment. Because they can just destroy the interior of a truck. I'll give a damn when they turn it in.So yeah like a deposit in an apartment. You get it back if the apartment is in the same condition it was when given to you. Can confirm. But a little story time.. When I first got assigned a truck after training, they put me in a 22 Pete with like 330k miles. Didn’t mention that the lease they had on it was up in a month. So that month went by, I had a load deliver near the terminal. They were like bring that truck by the terminal, the lease is up on it, we’re putting you into a different truck.. When I returned it back to them I cleaned it up better than how I got it to my abilities. They tried charging me a $200 cleaning fee for the carpet in the sleeper being dirty. I told them hell naw. I was in that truck for about a month, the truck has around 340k miles on it, I cleaned that truck up better than how I received it, and that the carpet was dirty when I got in it so I put a little rug down to not get my socks dirty since I couldn’t clean the carpet cause it was so saturated. They ended up refunding me back the charge thankfully. On top of that, they charge you for everything they can. Including all the necessary stuff to do the job that they require. Load locks, door locks, air cuff locks, detention stamp, tire chains etc. IMO, as company driver making .50¢/mi that shit should all be provided. I recently also learned that if you go company flatbed, they charge you roughly $5k for all the supplies to do that job also. Like tarps, bungees, straps, chains, coil bunks, binders etc.
View on Reddit #79634074

Kershaws_Tasty_Ruben@reddit

The reason why you were charged for the cleaning is a feature not a flaw in their system. It’s a feature because the staff in that department gets a percentage of the fees charged to the driver returning the tractor. It benefits both Prime and the staff because the staff is more inclined to nitpick about what is and isn’t chargeable. I’m convinced that the business model has a component of hitting each driver for a few dollars each month as an added revenue stream. Good on you for fighting for the money. But, if you stayed on at Prime for any length of time they got their money out of you somehow.

I get why a company would take a deposit on their equipment. But what bugs me is the $250 per check. $250 is a big chunk of change, even more so when it is four weeks in a row. Since they are already gonna do it, they should at least make it a more tolerable dollar amount for the deduction.

The deposit is legal, what they consider "excessive detailing" is debatable. It's company equipment that an employee is using. It's going to have "wear and tear" and it's going to get dirty, that's common. It's no different than giving an office area to an office employee. The office employee doesn't empty trash, dust their space, or detail the office. To expect another employee to do more without compensation is ridiculous, as it always has been.

I would not be surprised if this was sent by someone who hacked their system or another driver on a tablet figured out how to send fleet wide.
