> this is far from a professional environment, if it was then ... there wouldn't be a 30 year old computer in that spot I would actually argue that professional environments are *more* likely to have old legacy hardware, in fact it's probably why people are making the (incorrect) assumption that you're professional.

You also need to pin the Mozilla deb, otherwise it'll get replaced with a snap on an upgrade since 3rd-party repositories are automatically disabled during an upgrade/

From what I've heard as long you have ethernet for at least one side it should be fine. If you can do ethernet for both it should work really well.

To some degree, answering your question requires a crystal ball. It's kind of impossible to know where prices will be in six months. If you feel like you're going to heavily regret it if prices go up, it might be best to start looking now. With my best guess, I'd say if you're not running into performance issues right now, I'd say waiting is likely best, it's *probably* the case that prices will go down.

Electron audio streams will no longer be named as "Chromium"

I think this applies on the application level, multiple audio streams from the same application will still have the same name. It fixes the issue that electron applications were indistinguishable from each other.

The issue with Battlefield 6 is the Javelin anticheat which doesn't support Linux (and as such will block it). So it's up to EA. There was a job posting about potentially supporting Linux, but until that work is actually done, BF6 will not be able to run. You could always dual-boot if you wanted, but I get that it's a bit more annoying with the anticheat, since you'd have to get secure boot working with both OSes (or disable/enable it frequently).

A new Ubuntu LTS comes out every two years, and is supported for five years, and tend not to get many updates (especially to the DE) during that entire period. The non-LTS Ubuntu releases come out every 6 months, that may be what you're thinking of.

> Copyleft and similar concepts wouldn't even be needed if it wasn't for the decision to make software copyrightable when USA Congress reclassified programs as "Literary Works" in 1980. I don't think that's entirely true. You can already put your code in the public domain, but large corporations could just take it, modify it, and release binaries with no source code, which is why open source organizations utilize copy-left. Removing software copyright is functionally equivalent to forcing open source organizations to put their software into public domain, allowing corporations to use it without giving anything back. Sure, binaries could be legally redistributed, but they already are; all that would change is the legality. Removing copyright would be a disaster for open source collaboration; making binaries legally redistributable is not worth the diminishing of this collaboration.

Current value proposition of the 5070ti against the 9070 xt

> Yeah that’s true but 99% of people use windows so I didn’t really mention it While I don't disagree with your overall point, 99% is probably too high. Even if you exclude Steam Decks, around 4% of English-language* Steam users use Linux ([Almost 6% if you include Steam Decks](https://www.gamingonlinux.com/steam-tracker/#engsplitanchor)). Given that this sub generally caters to more technically inclined users, I wouldn't be surprised if that percentage was even higher here. *Steam users who have their interface set to use English.

No, I've had issues with both Victoria 3 and Trackmania. The issue I think is that both very quickly use a bunch of RAM (10GB+) on launch and the OOM killer can't keep up.

To Windows-to-Linux migrants - What was your breaking point?

Posted by AtomicTaco13@reddit | linux | View on Reddit | 684 comments

visor841@reddit

Honestly it was whole host of things, I made a fairly slow semi-unintentional changeover from probably 2014-2017. I wasn't really trying to full switch, just dual-boot, but I just had less and less reason to use Windows until I hadn't used it in half a year and wanted to reclaim the space. 1. Automatic updates. I was at a decent-sized chess tournament that got delayed a couple hours because the Tournament Director's laptop decided to restart and install updates before the morning pairings had been made. Having that happen with some kind of deadline sounded nightmarish. 2. Paradox games launched faster, I was a modder, and had an HDD at the time. EU4 took 5 minutes to launch on Windows, 1.5 minutes on Linux, and modding required a lot of game launching. This is what had me solidly dual-booting, no way I was waiting all that extra time if I could help it. 3. Drivers. At the time my main controller was a wireless Xbox 360 controller with a knockoff wireless usb adapter. On Linux it was plug and play. Windows wouldn't detect it properly so you'd have to set it manually (I think the default *wired* 360 driver worked), but it was finicky. Getting the adapter working in Windows 7 was annoying, getting it working in Windows 8.1 was a huge pain, and I couldn't get it to work consistently in Windows 10. 4. I had a weird RAM or driver issue that only showed up in Windows 7. Never really figured it out, but that got me "upgrade" to 10, which caused other issues. 5. This might sound dumb, but I couldn't figure out how to get the clock to stay set to the right time in I think Windows 10. Every time I rebooted it would be off until I went into the time setting and unchecked and rechecked the time syncing. IIRC I even tried some registry stuff but couldn't get it working. Just a pain. 6. Alt-tabbing. Alt-tabbing on Windows generally seemed to cause me issues, and took forever, in part because I had a really weak system and so played on really low resolutions, meaning an alt-tab would require a resolution change. Linux at the time gave me no such issues when alt-tabbing except I think with one very old VN (*Clannad*). There's probably some more things I'm forgetting, but it really was a whole host of somewhat minor issues.
