You were younger than the primary youth audience for most of those movies. Those born about 1966-1976 were the heart of the age demographic represented in the John Hughes movies, for example.

Gen Z is Not Drinking, But Are You?

Never was a big drinker though I could enjoy everything from a cold Budweiser to a nutty dark stout to a sweet and sour Belgian ale. But I went to a meditation retreat in 2017 and somehow just stopped drinking all alcohol from then on. Didn't really even think about it. Sorta just happened and it took me probably six months to realize it. Alcohol served a flavor purpose in my diet by supplying the range of bitter taste. I've replaced it with coffee, which until around the same time I never consumed more than a couple times a week. Now I have coffee every day.

Did Gen X largely skip Woodstock '99?

Posted by RSVPno@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 157 comments

printerdsw1968@reddit

The explosion of GenX-driven music scenes of the early 90s, lots of creativity along with streaks of idealism, were devolving by the later 90s. You could feel it. Everything was taking a cynical turn, including that final disastrous attempt at branding Woodstock. Enough people could see it coming to know it wasn't the place to be, leaving attendance to clueless dudes looking for a free for all.

Most people are surprised that I've only had two birthday parties in my life. Never really celebrated as a kid. The first was a surprise party when I turned 22. The second was a gathering for my 50th. Other than that, it's always only been a quiet birthday dinner.

Never had a problem reaction with any vax until my second shingles shot. Was knocked out for a day with a fever and aches. Slept it off, not a big deal. And once assimilated, the ill reaction vanished very quickly. My cousin never got the shots and got shingles. I'll spare you those details but just know her case was enough to motivate me to get the shots.

Our kid is a special needs adult child, mostly independent day to day but will need a safety net of an inheritance. So yes, we're planning on leaving her a substantial bit of savings, and probably a house, too. And depending on her as lightly as possible for our care.

I've been listening to Gerry Rafferty's great album City to City a lot lately. Many would put the album's two big hits, Right Down the Line and Baker Street, in with a yacht rock playlist. The whole album is terrific, the deep cuts included.

I'm high right now. 10mg cookie. Not much smoking anymore. I first got into cannabis in college in the 80s. Smoked a lot. Then almost nothing until after 30. Became an every other day user by 45 but with long breaks, like a year at a time. And now I'm using more than ever, usually six nights a week.

For me the funny thing is I do not remember ever seeing another York Steak House. This was in Michigan. I think even at the time I wondered if it was a chain. Of course the faux-Tudor stylings were pure magic for a little kid in the 1970s.

I loved York Steak House! The one we used to go to was a cafeteria style tray-service deal. By the time you got to end of the line, you'd see the grill master finishing your steak with the flame broiling. Add mushroom sauce for the extra savory touch.

About $2.5m net worth at 57. Sounds like a lot, and it is for daily comfort abd security. But we have a special needs adult child who will need some support for a lifetime. So we’re planning for that.

Media literacy, financial literacy, historical literacy..... and general literacy gone down the tubes. My experience with Gen Zs is limited but mostly positive. Often way more responsible than I was at their age. And kind, courteous, and sensitive. Good people. But the grasp of cultural and political history is really wanting. And in the end that may be the downfall of the society, maybe even of the human species.
