I lost the shingles lottery

Healthy, active, 48m. After seeing several “get your shingles vaccine!” posts here, I made an appointment with my PCP. Appointment is Wednesday next week.
Today I woke up to a tingly little rash on my rib cage. Then noticed some on my back on the same side. And then my clavicle on the same side. Urgent care doctor confirmed it’s shingles. Wrote me an Rx and I guess this is my lot in life for the next however long, until it clears up.
It’s already profoundly uncomfortable and I’m mad at myself for delaying getting the vaccine. I heard that THC helps numb the pain. I shall be putting this to the test tonight, for science.
SevereIdea@reddit
I’m just finishing up an outbreak. His damn this shit sucked!!
Lu10ntDn@reddit
Personally, I’d rather deal with the mild symptoms and taking an anti-viral medication than taking the vaccine(s). Single shingles vaccines have a 56.9% efficacy rate and two doses are still only around 70%.
And yes, I’ve had shingles before and this is what I did. The symptoms were only a pain to deal with for a couple days.
EastAd7676@reddit
From what source are you getting these efficacy rates because they’re nowhere near multiple, credentialed, reputable sources.

Wot? According to the CDC:
In adults ages 50–69 with healthy immune systems, it was about 97% effective at preventing shingles
In adults 70 and older, it was about 91% effective.
It was also about 89–91% effective at preventing PHN, the lingering nerve pain that can follow shingles.

Roanaward-2022@reddit
Had a colleague that had it in her eye and was very painful and uncomfortable. Then had to work from home for another week or two because we have staff & a significant number of guests (children's museum) that may be pregnant.
While shingles itself cannot be caught from someone, the underlying virus can be spread through direct contact with exposed rash blisters. If a pregnant woman catches it, she will develop chickenpox, which carries serious health risks for the unborn baby
Emotional_Mess261@reddit
My first bout with shingles was my right ribs and I was pregnant. I’d had two episodes of chicken pox as a kid. I had no complications fortunately but I was worried
I am a medical social worker and witnessed the extreme nerve pain that can result from shingles, fears of blindness if on the face. One man had it on top of his head and he suffered with severe nerve pain. I don’t want that
LayerNo3634@reddit
I've known people with Shingles that were down for a month or had serious complications. A coworker had scarring from the rash. I got my vaccine.
OP, don't read that! Praying for speedy healing and comfort.
Lu10ntDn@reddit
They didn’t catch it early enough
Mr_Writes@reddit
Thanks for the reminder. I've been putting it off and really need to get it.
eggs_erroneous@reddit
Can you just go to Walgreens and get the vaccine or do you have to go to the doctor?
BuilderAcceptable@reddit
I got mine at Walgreens
FriendlyDisorder@reddit
Good! I'm glad you're old enough to know better. 😄
Be ready for a strong reaction on the second dose. It. Sucked. 😞 But at least I'm theoretically immune now.
Mr_Writes@reddit
Thanks. Last thing I need is shingles.
CrampyPanda@reddit
Reactions to the vaccine are wildly individual - I had zero reaction to either.
DiamondHandsDarrell@reddit
I've been asking my PCP for the shingles vaccine and he says I don't need it 😮💨
NemoHere@reddit
I think it might be aged related. Also, if you never had chicken pox, you might not get shingles. I'm just guessing, though.
DiamondHandsDarrell@reddit
I've had chicken pox so that's why I want it. I'm pretty sure I'm have to live through the horror of shingles at some point 😬
RevolCisum@reddit
No, but you can get chicken pox from someone who has shingles. And, it's way more dangerous to have chicken pox as an adult. And then, you also carry the trigger for shingles too.
Doridar@reddit
Indeed. And that's why my son got the chick6pix vaccine
needlenozened@reddit
If you are of age, just go to your local pharmacy and get it. I got my first dose at Kroger and my second at Fred Meyer
Active-Confidence-25@reddit
Go to any Walmart and they can give it to you. The CDC recommends the shingles vaccine (Shingrix) for all adults aged 50 and older. It is also recommended for adults aged 19 and older who have weakened immune systems or are immunocompromised
Charmcityvapeguy@reddit
Just got my vaccine, along with Pneumonia vaccine, just know the combo had me stuck in bed all the next day.
SecretMiddle1234@reddit
I have autoimmune disorder so specialist doesn’t recommend vaccine. Especially since vaccine gave me my autoimmune disorder.
ASDPenguin@reddit
Same here. There are ingredients in them I'm highly allergic to.
theateroffinanciers@reddit
I'm actually afraid to get the vaccine because I hear it's a hard one. I heard it really knocks you over. And I had a reaction to the covid vaccine booster so I'm afraid to get it. But then I don't want to get shingles either. It's a tough call
CoDaDeyLove@reddit
I have severe reactions to most vaccines. Even a flu shot puts me in bed for a day. But I definitely got the shingles vaccine. Yes, I had a welt on my arm for days, but it's way better than shingles.
theateroffinanciers@reddit
I have severe reaction to vaccines too. Which is why I'm reticent to get it. It's a problem. I really would love to get all the vaccines all the time.
LaLunaMama75@reddit
What kind of reactions do you have? Maybe they’re something that could be offset?
theateroffinanciers@reddit
It's more than just muscle soreness or feeling sick. I get POTS, heart rate fluctuations, I'm down for about a month. The covid booster was more serious. It has affected me for life.
journeyingmomma@reddit
If you had a reaction to other vaccines that is a sign from your body. I would listen up if I were you…
journeyingmomma@reddit
They prescribe the same for shingles as for herpes
SuzQP@reddit
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Not only does the shingles vaccine prevent shingles, new research shows it's also impressively effective in reducing the likelihood of Alzheimer's and vascular dementia. Considering the devastating effects of dementia, a few days of misery is absolutely worth it.
https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2025/03/shingles-vaccination-dementia.html
theateroffinanciers@reddit
Wow that's incredible.
SuzQP@reddit
Yup. Get your shot before you forget! 😆
Current-Scallion-825@reddit
The vaccine side effects don't come close to the devastation of having shingles. Drink a ton of water both before and after the shot, take ibuprofen afterwards, plan to rest the rest of the day and the next day.
kten1974@reddit
I was fine, just a sore arm for both, but my doctor told me to space them 5-6 months apart! I got 1st in October, second in March.
globehoppr@reddit
Both of my shingles shots were nothing- just a little soreness. Everybody is different.
Wolfman1961@reddit
I would get the vaccine, really I would.
DerangedRhinoceras@reddit
I got pretty sick for a couple days, fever, aches, all of it. Due to go get my second shot now. I hear that’s worse. lol. Better than shingles though!
AuntieMRocks@reddit
The shots are bad but shingles is way worse. Get the shots.
stormcarver1@reddit
I got shingles and flu vaccines the same day. I was down for about a day and then my arm hurt for two more. I blame it all on the flu vaccine.
snoopykiss@reddit
I got shingles at the end of April. Yesterday was the first day that I felt human. Trust me, you’d rather the vaccine over a month of extreme pain and lack of sleep from it.
TJH99x@reddit
But the vax reaction lasts maybe a couple days and then is gone whereas Shingles goes on and on and on, and is very painful and can affect your eyes even.
Beachrockgatherer@reddit
I only got one shingles vaccine because it made me so sick. I didn’t go back for the second that was over a year ago. Wondering if I should go back for another shingles vaccine
journeyingmomma@reddit
Umm…I think you answered your own question
Beachrockgatherer@reddit
Well you are supposed to get two, so I’ve always wondered if I should go back for the second one and suck it up.
journeyingmomma@reddit
I’m not you, of course, but any chance I’d ever get another vaccine after the Covid scam is long gone. I’m never getting another vax of any kind ever. Our govt and the pharmaceutical companies cannot be trusted. That’s crystal clear to me. But to each his own!!
slanderpanther@reddit
Got my first shot a month and a half ago and it was less sore than the covid vaccine. Hope you’re feeling better soon!
curiousengineer601@reddit
Not going to lie the shingles vaccine made me miss a half day of work both times
slanderpanther@reddit
That sucks! I'm sorry to hear that. The pneumonia vaccine does that to me.
Outside_Simple_217@reddit
Shouldn’t you get your second shot one month from the first? Or has the protocol changed? Not trying to call you out, I just need to know.
TollyVonTheDruth@reddit
I was told between 2 to 6 months, but if you go past it, you can still get it but waiting longer puts you at a higher risk of getting shingles. If you wait past 6 months. I got my second shot 2 months after my first, and it put me out for a full 24 hours. I was weak, sore, and felt like I had the flu. The doctor advised to simply take some Tylenol. I guess it worked, but it made me sweat like I was in a heavy downpour with no umbrella followed by the chills. It all blew over after 24 hours, but it was not fun.
slanderpanther@reddit
No worries! My second one is in two weeks. IIRC it’s a two month window to get both shots. I wonder if it depends on which company’s vaccine we get.
quilt-here@reddit
I had a terrible case of chicken pox at 16. It was so bad. I've always told myself that I probably wouldn't get shingles because I had to fight the pox so bad. Does anyone know if this is true? Or the opposite?
Laara2008@reddit
The severity of the case of chickenpox has no bearing you're likelihood of getting shingles. Get the vaccine.
Lugknots@reddit
The vax is recommended at 50, I think. So, you were not late in getting it. Just bad luck.
AlienRosie3667@reddit
I wasn't allowed to get the vaccines till I turned 50 and I got shingles 6 months before. I don't know if thats the universal rule or just my insurance, though.
Chance-Night3198@reddit
I asked my doctor to give me all the vaccines she could last year (I was 47) and the only over 50 she could give me was pneumonia and covid (during that time period when you had get a prescription for it) because I have asthma. She said shingles had to wait till I'm 50.
BuzzFabbs@reddit
I had shingles in my 30s (58 now). As soon as there was a vaccine, I signed up. They were down my face and inside my cheek. Misery! And had to stay away from department admin who was pregnant.
-forbiddenkitty-@reddit
I had it in my 30s also, along my bra line. Couldn't wear a bra for a week, which was uncomfortable in a different way.
mom2artists@reddit
The supplement lysine helps and you can look up low arginine diet, or low arginine foods. Do your own research by using pubmed and not just random internet sites. Also, acyclovir can knock a breakout out, but isn’t great for your liver. Between acyclovir and lysine, I don’t get many breakouts, like 3 in maybe 4 years now? So little that when I start to break out, I think I have a zit. Then it starts hurting and I smh darn it, it’s shingles trying to rear up its ugly head. 🙄🤦🏻♀️🙂
FromGreat2Good@reddit
If you’re getting shingles 3/4x a year, you are doing something extremely wrong in your life. It’s definitely herpes/cold sore break out which is different.
Current-Scallion-825@reddit
I think you are talking about herpes (which is what acyclovir is prescribed for). It's very unusual to have multiple shingles episodes in a year. Fewer than 10% of people get shingles even a second time in their life.
FrenchFrySpongeBob@reddit
I had shingles a few months ago at age 47. It started on my head and neck and quickly spread to my brain. I spent 9 days in the hospital on IV meds which led to acute kidney injury and got me close to needing temporary dialysis. The only symptom I had before I developed meningitis was a really sore neck and a rash under my hair that went undetected. In my opinion a vaccine that will lower your risk is of experiencing what I went through absolutely worth it.
All_Damn_Day@reddit
That sounds terrible, glad you made it through! Yes, Shingles is my prime defense for ALL vaccinations.
All_Damn_Day@reddit
I also had the “shingles tingle”, but it was more like an untreated sunburn on my shoulders, painful to the touch, constant nerve pain. My GP gave me Valtrex (Herpes Medication) for 5 days, it went away without getting full-blown. But that “tingle” experience made me not EVER want to get it fully. Chicken pox is Herpes Zoster(?), and that is why I would rather have been vaccinated and never experience the initial viral illness, because some viruses just stay in your body and it’s better not to have them at all.
Hot-Butterfly-8024@reddit
Welp. In the words of our poet laureate, Trent Reznor: “I was up above it. Now I’m down there n it.”
Ashaliedoll@reddit
Got it at fucking 35. Lidocaine is very helpful 😭
LaLunaMama75@reddit
Yes! I haven’t had shingles so far but I have trigeminal neuralgia. Nothing they prescribed helps the nerve pain at all but somehow slathering my scalp and face with lidocaine takes the edge off. I wish I had known that sooner.
Proprietor@reddit
I thought you had to be 50 to even get it?
imbize@reddit
That was my understanding as well. I have a reminder on my calendar to book an appointment right before my 50th birthday.
GreatRimuru51@reddit
You don't HAVE to be 50 to get the vaccine..
That's just the age they determined the vaccine would last long enough to not be needed again during your lifetime.
I've seen posts on here from people in their 30s getting it.
Basically, if you had chicken pox as a child, the virus is still in you, its just dormant.
Something triggers it later on in life and it mutates into shingles.
That's my understanding of the situation at least.
Pye-@reddit
I think it depends on the health insurance you have. Mine refused the shingles vaccine until I was over 50
GreatRimuru51@reddit
That makes sense... I was 52 before I even thought about the vaccine... was at the pharmacy picking up a prescription when they asked me if I wanted to get it... I was like... well my Doctor thinks I should get it... so I did.. i think it was the best thing... with my circumstances now, I shudder to think what effect all this im going through would have had if I hadn't gotten the vaccine.
After being diagnosed with stage 4 rectal cancer.. 6 prescription pills, 4 non prescribed... plus the 3 or 4 treatment medicines I get every 2 weeks.
Just a taste: I have a rash that has been here since February to 1 degree or another.. its a side effect of a treatment.. the worse the rash, the better you respond to the treatment.... so my chest and back looks like a severe acne outbreak that won't go completely away. I'll probably have that for another year at least.. one dose stays in your system for months.. its called vectibix..
Minor fatigue here and there. Not a big deal.
Constipation.. countering it as much as I can.
Haven't had to deal with the nausea very much... that's usually just the evening I get the infusions. I get an anti nausea there at the start of it.
Cold sensitivity.. when I drink or eat something cold.. a fountain drink, ice cream, cold water... it feels like I'm swallowing needles... it can literally hurt swallowing... and if I grab something out of the refrigerator or freezer, it feels like I'm grabbing a handful of needles.. if I don't wear gloves now, it can be painful just getting a bottle out of the fridge.
And now, I'm starting to get hand and foot syndrome... ( this is not related to or is anything like hand foot mouth disease kids get) its red spots that develop on you hands and feet.. various sized spots... I have like 6 or 7 tiny red dots on my left palm and have seen mid sized ones on my feet.
I'm sorry for rambling so long and getting on such a side tangent here.... it just occurred to me that things could be very different for me right now if I hadn't gotten the shingles jabs when I did.
Anna_Lemming@reddit
This is the GenX sub. Ramble on..,
GreatRimuru51@reddit
Thank you!!!!
Active-Confidence-25@reddit
The CDC recommends the shingles vaccine (Shingrix) for all adults aged 50 and older. It is also recommended for adults aged 19 and older who have weakened immune systems or are immunocompromised
13maven@reddit
SCIENCE!!! Puff puff pass!
FantasticStooge@reddit
You validate all of my instincts, thank you
Sir_UlrichVonL@reddit
Geez, I’m so sorry. Lukewarm baths with baking soda help with the pain. I hope you recover quickly.
I turn 50 next month and I’m looking forward to finally getting my vaccine. My dr wouldn’t write a script for it bc it’s against their policy for under 50s.
Denverdogmama@reddit
I got my vaccine right after I turned 50. My mom and my BIL both got shingles, and I think it was BIL (I live far away from my family) who had them in his eyes. So I was extra cautious and paranoid.
Sir_UlrichVonL@reddit
Understandable. I can’t even imagine it on the eyes. Hope they’re both doing well now.
I had chicken pox twice as a kid and got shingles at 21 so I can’t wait to get the vaccine. I don’t ever want to go through that again. I was super annoyed that my dr wouldn’t write a rx for it when I was 48. I even offered to pay for it out of pocket. Nope.
No_Couth_1177@reddit
The only person I know over the age of 50 that got shingles was my mom. Everyone else, including me was under. They really should lower the age for the vaccine to 45 at least.
Sorry you’re going through it. Get the anti-viral if you can. It helped me a ton.
Odd_Location7231@reddit
I got it at 12.
LittleMamaScooking@reddit
I think it should be lower than 45. Hubs had it in his 30's twice, in both eyes. Yeah that was fun times. Thankfully he didn't loose vision. Still haven't hit the age where they will give it to him, so we just hope for no more flare ups.
Chibi-Skyler@reddit
Yikes! I'm so glad his eyesight wasn't affected.
I've dealt with eye issues all my life, the worst being a terrible infection in my late 40s that led to major sight loss. When I turned 50, my eye doctor said, "The first thing you need to do is get your shingles vaccine. You can't afford getting the virus and possibly it affecting your eye."
No_Couth_1177@reddit
Mine was by my eye and I was TERRIFIED!
USMCLee@reddit
An old friend got it in her 20's.
Head_Effect3728@reddit
My wife got it at 37.
droneupuk@reddit
My partner got shingles a few years ago at around 47 but here we can't get the vax until you are 70 or 80
HollygoLightly1970@reddit
Where do you live? Drive over a state line somewhere and get it. That’s obnoxious that anyone would prevent you from the vaccine until you’re 70 or 80. Is this a free country or not? If you want the shingles vaccine, you should be allowed to have it.
droneupuk@reddit
I'm in the UK I'm sure we can get it if you pay for it but on the NHS you have to be a lot older
FuggaDucker@reddit
You know the 70-80 vaccine schedule is based on a drug that is no longer used?
You are not allowed to get a drug that was updated over a decade ago and much of the world uses.
While government fights over stupid stuff.. stuff like this sits.
HollygoLightly1970@reddit
I had it about 10 years ago. It’s horrible. But I did get the vaccine last fall.
I took lukewarm oatmeal baths when I had it. The heat and humidity of summer weather will make it harder so you might need to stay indoors for a bit of time. Don’t wear anything synthetic, plain loose cotton is your friend till this is over. Cannabis helped me as well so give it a whirl. Good luck and I’m sorry!
Frequent-Secret6486@reddit
Sound like you got shingles from the vaccine
shedwyn2019@reddit
You mean got shingles from the thought of the vaccine? Given OP had not taken the vaccine?
RubeHalfwit@reddit
OMG can I get shingles from reading this??
shedwyn2019@reddit
Yes. Most definitely unless you take immediate action:
Take a cold shower using saddle soap, then walk backwards around a Methodist church 4 times. Then you need to eat an entire key lime pie and watch Gilligan’s Island reruns for 4 hours. That should prevent you from getting shingles from this post.
Sir_UlrichVonL@reddit
cracksbacks@reddit
Sounds like you don't know how to read very well
call-me-the-seeker@reddit
Well, those are the ones that are primed to fall hardest for the antivax clownery, probably.
BitterQueen17@reddit
That's not how a shingles vaccine works, but OP got shingles before their appointment to receive the vaccine. Try to be more observant when reading a post.
OkNeedleworker8554@reddit
Well he said his appointment for the shingles vaccine is next Wednesday, so I don't think he's had the vaccine yet.
Pure_Explorer3821@reddit
Classic Gen X reading comprehension
VardisFisher@reddit
Cite where you read that. Its a recombinant vaccine so it isnt even possible. How much Ivermectin did you use during COVID?
Few-Might2630@reddit
Curious- I had chicken pox as a kid around 10, then shingles at 15. I can’t seem to get a solid answer if I need the vaccine or if I’m immune. No two doctors have said the same thing. SHINGLES SUX! It hurt worse than childbirth and lasted weeks and weeks.
Sir_UlrichVonL@reddit
I’m not a dr but that’s crazy that you can’t get an answer. I would get the vaccine. The virus is in your system, even though it’s dormant right now.
I had chicken pox twice as a kid & shingles at 21, and I’m terrified to get it again. It sucks so bad.
Current-Scallion-825@reddit
You need the vaccine. It's rare for people to get it twice (fewer than 10% do), but as you know, it's terrible. I would not risk it. If you are over 50 now, just get the vaccine. Not sure if you can get it if you are under 50.
CoDaDeyLove@reddit
Once this has cleared up, get the vaccine. Something similar happened to me, and my doctor said that if I had shingles once, I was at much higher risk to get it again. I work in nursing homes, and I see people who were healthy and independent until they got shingles. It was so debilitating that they ended up in a nursing home and some never got better.
Current-Scallion-825@reddit
It's actually pretty rare to get it a second time--fewer than 10% of people do. But definitely get the vaccine because anyone who has had it once does not want to risk getting it again even if the risk is low!
dillaq@reddit
You can get shingles more than once. You need the vaccine.
mouse_attack@reddit
Well, if it helps, my husband got shingles at 49 and I (48) immediately made a vaccination appointment — only to be told I can’t get it until I’m 50.
Sir_UlrichVonL@reddit
Same. I even offered to pay for it out of pocket but “the policy is 50+.” Dumb.
PaleEmpress414@reddit
Same thing- my brother got it at 48, and I was just shy of 50, but Walgreens turned me away and said come back after your birthday!!
kimmeshelter@reddit
I just scheduled my first shot thanks to this post. Take care of yourself.
PikkiNarker@reddit
Idk how anyone can take THC for pain. If I have something that hurts and I get even a wee bit high the hurting thing just went into overdrive
writergal75@reddit
Oh wow; it totally takes pain away for me but I have to be really high.
PikkiNarker@reddit
Maybe that’s what I’m doing wrong. I need to take a high dose
DimSumGweilo@reddit
Sounds like you’re using the wrong kind of strain. Some will enhance the connection to the pain for sure but strains that help with inflammation can greatly reduce pain. I recently dealt with a broke bone, cannabis was one of the few things giving me relief at night so I could get some sleep while waiting on surgery.
PikkiNarker@reddit
I only take indica as sativa gives me major anxiety. But even a hangnail throbs harder when I’m high
Less_Tacos@reddit
The vaccine kicked my ass.
UntitledGooseDame@reddit
Dude, I could feel every individual muscle in my body hurting. It was brutal. I was terrified of the second shot, which also wasn't fun but nothing close to that first one.
Anna_Lemming@reddit
But you did it!
UntitledGooseDame@reddit
I did! Yay!! 🥳
Som12H8@reddit
First shot I was down for a week. Wes dreading the second shot, which I got 10 days ago. Not at all as bad. My idiot cousin who doesn't believe in vaccines or the moon landing got shingles last month. Insane pain in his whole left side.
iareagenius@reddit
Me too!
Anna_Lemming@reddit
I'm the weirdo that has zero effects from any vaccine. Including, a bunch of 3rd-world vaccines. But I have heard the shingles vax can knock people out for a few days.
Still worth it!
jimheim@reddit
Shingrix is no joke. I rarely have much reaction to vaccines. Second shot was like a bad flu for a couple days.
zunzarella@reddit
I was fully prepared to be knocked on my ass and nada, other than a sore arm.
mandyj0306@reddit
Same here. Just a sore arm and nothing else.
HerbertRTarlekJr@reddit
Same here, but shingles is worse, and lasts much longer.
Diligent-Touch-5456@reddit
The second dose of the vaccine almost killed me, but still better than getting shingles. I watched my mom suffer from shingles and didn't want that to happen to me.
Anna_Lemming@reddit
Jesus. I agree though. Probably better than than 'the' shingles. Human bodies are so interesting. I just was not willing to test the waters. Got the Shingrix ASAP.
HappyJoie@reddit
I had to wait until I was 50 to get the shot. Luckily, I never got Shingles.
You can get Shingles more than once, so be sure to get vaccinated as soon as you're able.
I hope you get over it soon!
webbulous@reddit
My husband is 55 and got the shots earlier this year. I tried to do the same, but the pharmacist said I have to wait until I’m 50. I’m counting down the days!
Feeling-Republic-477@reddit
I got mine before 50 through Walmart Pharmacy.
globehoppr@reddit
Did you pay out of pocket?
SeeCopperpot@reddit
I got it when I was in a high-stress situation in my late thirties, dealing with the physical shingles pain during that high stress just about finished me mentally, greetings to your pharmacist 😾
OwslyOwl@reddit
I am pretty sure my provider won’t give the vaccine until I’m 50 because they won’t give a colonoscopy until that age either.
Senior_Bad_6381@reddit
They absolutely will. I got my first at 45.
OwslyOwl@reddit
I asked my provider about getting a colonoscopy and she said no unless the prescreen fecal test came back with positive or inconclusive results. Mine came back with no issues. I’m with Kaiser, which overall I’m happy with.
globehoppr@reddit
Your doctor is wrong- that guidance has now changed as others have mentioned. Please go get a colonoscopy now.
scottwsx96@reddit
Your doctor seems to be following old information. 45 is the standard now and it’s when I got mine. Most doctors want insurance companies to cover them as early as 35 because there is a rise in colon cancer cases and it’s hitting people younger and younger.
Intelligent-Exit724@reddit
I’d get another doctor. I got my first at 45. It came back clean with no issues. Doctor said “I’ll see you in ten years.” I went back in five. They found and removed a benign polyp. Who knows what it would have become in another five years.
Feeling-Republic-477@reddit
Same here!
mundanenoodles@reddit
It’s officially recommended at 45 now
comicsnerd@reddit
And if you have bowel cancer in the family, do it ASAP and every 5 years (as is the standard in the Netherlands)
FuggaDucker@reddit
FOR SCIENCE!
IloveEvyJune@reddit
I was so terrified of shingles after my mom had it that I got a prescription from my pcp to get the shot at 35. It’s a good thing I did. I no longer qualify for it because of autoimmune diseases.
Winter-Macaroon-4296@reddit
I started the new year with Shingles. It took two trips to urgent care to finally get the correct diagnosis. (The first PA was insistent that it was dry skin. I explained that dry skin usually isn't painful and doesn't spread...). Mine started on my scalp and moved its way down my face, and on to my eyelid. Fortunately I didn't get it in my eye. I have a lovely souvenir/scar on my forehead and eyelid to remember.
mom2artists@reddit
Wow, I broke out above my eye and doc I was in office for (neurologist seeing my husband!) immediately made me a patient and wrote me a script for acyclovir because he didn’t want it to spread to my eye.
Sandover5252@reddit
I had it on the quadrant around my eye, too. The scars went away. I had the worst resident who took an extra day to diagnose it, despite my PCP having sent me to Opthamology with the Dx, costing me a day on Valtrex. She tried to send me home with no pain meds and told me I was putting my contacts in improperly. Fortunately her attending came in and read her the riot act.

The first thing I did when I turned 50 (2020) was get my shingles and pneumonia vaccines.
ubermonkey@reddit
Oh, man, that sucks. I lost the same battle b/c while I absolutely DID have the vax appointment on my calendar for the week after my 50th birthday, I turned 50 the weekend COVID hit so everything shut down. Fuck me, right?
Anyway, I never got around to it, and then had some mild irritation on my forehead one day that got worse the next day. I had an ugly feeling so I went to a walk-in clinic.
"So, what brings you in today?"
"I'm afraid this is shingles."
"Oh, it absolutely is." (Writes script.) "Go fill this NOW and get three doses in TODAY. It'll speed things up."
The antivirals were clutch. I was only really uncomfortable for about 36 hours. The lesions were GROSS AS HELL for 10 days after (I wore lots of hats) but the pain was truncated, and for that I'm grateful.
Once clear of the flareup, I got my vax.
Party-Stormer@reddit
It was very smart of governments to shut down the health industry when COVID hit
TrumpTheAntichrist@reddit
Such an ignorant comment.
Celeste_Seasoned_14@reddit
It’s sarcasm, I think…I HOPE.
ubermonkey@reddit
This is a very, very dumb comment. You should delete it.
It suggests a profound misunderstanding of what happened, and of constitutes reasonable steps to manage a global pandemic.
Additionally, it's profoundly disrespectful of the men and women who risked their own health to care for COVID patients in that period, many of whom are dear friends of mine, and who did this work when proper PPE was in short supply.
Party-Stormer@reddit
This shows the level of respect you have for other opinions. Keep the shingles then
OnlyCommentWhenTipsy@reddit
Keep your immune system boosted with vitamin D. Works for other variants of the virus too.
StuckandTreading@reddit
My PCP pushes me for my flu shot (never had a flu shot yet) and now my tetanus shot (I work in an office), not once has she brought up shingles. 48.
I'm not anti-vax, for the record.
smallermuse@reddit
Where I live it isn't considered until after age 50.
StuckandTreading@reddit
Thanks. I wasn't aware.
Been dealing with Perimenopause, wasn't ready for another (health thing) to be added to my stack of plates I'm already trying to juggle.

Oh, I hear that!!

This perimenopause is such a crappy teaser.

My insurance wouldn't allow Shingles vaccine until I was 50. I didn't know this wasn't unoversal.
vagabondizer@reddit
They can not stop you from getting it, they just wont pay for it. It would cost ~$400 for both doses with no insurance. Not cheap, but worth it if one wanted the peace of mind.
LawrenceSpiveyR@reddit
Same here, I asked to get the vaccine at 48 and was told to wait until 50.
Opak03@reddit
I can confirm that THC provides a little relief. I pretty much didn't care that I had shingles when I took some.
imgrendel@reddit
I had my first case of shingles at 42. It was in my optic nerve. I could have gone blind in that eye if not for my ophthalmologist who put me on antiviral eye drops every two hours from when I woke until I slept. I ended up having it in that same eye twice.
The original shingles vaccine was released in 2006, but only to those 60 years old or older. I had to play the shingles roulette until I was able to get an exception to get the shot at 45 years old. My insurance wouldn’t pay for it was the recommendation by the CDC had only been lowered to 50 years old. I gladly forked over $250. Since I have had the shot and now the new two-shot vaccine, I have not had shingles again.
Once you are cleared, get the shots. I could have been blinded. I know a person who got it on their junk. I can’t vouch for how it feels in other sensitive places, but my eye felt like it had a piece of fiberglass in it for weeks.
azchocolatelover@reddit
My godfather had shingles inside his throat. He was unable to eat but didn't go to see a doc because he was caring for my godmother, who had Alzheimer's. The shingles played a major part in his ultimate passing

bradrhine@reddit
My insurance covers the vaccine at age 50. I got shingles at age 49. Horrible experience and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.
My case was “classic” that the urgent care doctor asked to take a picture. The urgent care nurse just kinda gagged and asked me to please put my shirt back on.
Jamie22022@reddit
Just remain hopefully it doesn't spread to your eyes or mouth. Those are by far the worst cases.
MadameMonk@reddit
Once it’s on your torso, I’m pretty certain that’s the nerve branch it stays put on. Depends where it was hiding dormant all those years. But it sticks around that spot. And yes, getting Shingles across your facial/scalp nerve is horrendous. Worst fortnight of my life. Plus the risk of permanent vision loss. So stressful.
Jamie22022@reddit
Yeah, it's a real issue. Had 2 friends who got it on their face and it did affect their vision.
a_youkai@reddit
Ahhh FUCK.. they keep saying you gotta get the vaccine at age 50... but I keep hearing about these early cases. My ex got it in his mid 30's..
MadameMonk@reddit
The vaccine age is just the medicos playing the health budget numbers. In some countries it’s subsidised over a certain age. Nothing to do with when it can strike.
sjk505@reddit
I got the shingles shot when I was at Walmart getting my flu shot. The lady says hey you’re over fifty now want a shingles vaccine? It’s free with your insurance. Well hearing free will get me to do anything and I get any vaccines I can. I’m the opposite of anti vax. Of course being a raging hypochondriac will do that to you.
No_Consequence_6821@reddit
Shingles vaccine isn’t recommended until age 50. You did nothing wrong. You just got unlucky. If it’s soon enough, you can still get the anti-viral to reduce the severity.
I had who BG Les twice before age 50, and I haven’t had post-hermetic neuralgia. I hope you’re equally as fortunate.
96HeelGirl@reddit
I was going to say the same thing, they just got unlucky. I had shingles once in my 30s and once in my 40s. I got the vaccine when I turned 50 last year, so hopefully that's it for me.
hwilliams02@reddit
The CDC has actually changed the guidelines and if you've had shingles you can now get the vaccine 18+.
lady8godiva@reddit
Only if you've already had shingles? Does that make you more likely to get it again?
hwilliams02@reddit
Immunocompromised as well. Adults 50 years and older: Recommended for all adults in this age group to prevent shingles and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), the most common complication.Immunocompromised adults: Recommended for adults 19 years and older who have weakened immune systems due to disease or therapy (e.g., cancer treatments or autoimmune medications).
MissDisplaced@reddit
After you recover get the vaccine! It can and does come back and you don’t want that. Hopefully you have a minor outbreak that clears relatively fast.
I knew at least five people who had it last year and two bad enough for hospital. I finally broke down and got both my shots. It wasn’t as bad as I feared, though it does kinda hurt! At least the second shot hurt like a bugger when given and really made my arm sore for a couple days.
cobrakai15@reddit
Be glad it wasn’t your ear. My doctor said I had an ear ache and sent me home. Next day the minute clinic had me at the ER in case it was in my eyes. Destroyed my vestibular nerve and effectively made me useless at 44. It’s been three years and I’m tired of doctors not caring or knowing how to help me. I just want my life back.
Jontsje@reddit
Shingles in the ear area is called Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) and can be very painful. My husband had this 2 months ago and took Valacyclovir as an antiviral medication and Prednisone to mute the damage to the nerves and take down inflammation. (Within 72 hrs of onset). RHS might be difficult to detect. A strict diet is crucial in order not to ‘feed’ the ongoing shingles ie: no chocolate or nuts and seeds (arginine).
Significant_Leg_7211@reddit
I also had it in the ear nerve and struggle with tinnitus and pain, I did lose hearing on one side but that came back thankfully, but I do get pain from hearing sound now. I agree it is life changing, do you get vertigo and nausea?
cobrakai15@reddit
I’m pretty much in a mild motion sickness state 24/7 the weather has a huge impact on how I feel. I do have vertigo spells and would have a day or two of diarrhea and vomiting once a month (apple cider vinegar and nutropic gummies have helped), I would wake up like that or have a sulfur burp before bed. My hearing is good but I get tinnitus and just non stop mucus inflammation in my head.
Mascaraholic@reddit
Sorry to ask what might be a dumb question but have you seen a physical therapist who specializes in vestibular issues?
cobrakai15@reddit
Yeah and they didn’t bother to see how many visits my insurance allotted and used them up in two months. I’m pretty sure that nerve is just damaged and I’m just gonna be dizzy and feel bad for the rest of my life. My second ent set me up for a VNG test I get the results tomorrow. My first ENT was an Ivy League educated quack or he was old and quit working 30 years ago, I haven’t decided.
crh131@reddit
😭. That’s terrible. I think I was newly 51 when I got shots. Maybe 50.
I want to convince my husband who is four years younger to get them at 47. But he is stickler for following guidelines. He’s also a workaholic and from what I hear of this pain he’d hate not being able to work from shingles more.
So sorry you almost got coverage. I hate medical system and have little faith in so much of it. Ie. Getting a real diagnosis without 10 visits over years. And getting insurance coverage. Minimal over worked staff in all areas.
But I think vaccines are one area we got it right before the medical system broke. I jump at a chance for them.
CLPDX1@reddit
Please get them!! It reduces the risk of Alzheimer’s
justme7256@reddit
I didn’t think you could get the shingles vaccine until you turn 50. I’m also 48 and have been waiting impatiently until the time I can get it.

You can still get the vaccine even after a shingles flair. I was 43 when I got ocular shingles (ouch). My GP made me wait until I hadn’t had an infection in a year and then prescribed the vaccine. That was actually pretty out of date advice and most practitioners will just tell you to either wait until the symptoms clear or wait until a few months after that.
Once I got my vaccine I haven’t had another shingles flair up again.
shinynugget@reddit
Yikes! So sorry, I hope it's not as bad as some of the stories I've been told about shingles. Get well fast.
2ndChanceAtLife@reddit
While it is vastly preferred to get vaccinated before you get shingles, the vaccination afterwards can help with the severity of outbreaks. It can be dialed down from “on my knees from the pain” to mildly annoying.
I get it in my left armpit. I thought it was a heat rash and sprayed it with an antifungal; hence, “on my knees from the pain.” LOL at my bad luck.

WicForever@reddit
Sorry to hear, hope it clears up sooner than later.
A little tip for getting the vaccine, at least in the US, go through a major pharmacy (like Walgreens or CVS) or check local pharmacies. But most will do the vaccine, clear it through your insurance, and a lot of times it can be done same day.
PaintedSilverRiver@reddit
Yes, I admit it - it’s get all of my vaccines through Walgreens. They have an app and you can use it for appointments too. I live in Minneapolis and I can usually get in the very next day. Great advice!
Successful_Nature712@reddit
I got the shingles as a child from my grandma vs. the chicken pox. I’m so sorry. I have had them a few times since then. You should be able to get an anti-viral for it. I’m hoping you feel better soon!
moonbeam127@reddit
i got my vax at CVS, no line, online scheduling, direct bill to insurance vs office co-pay.
DONT FORGET its a 2 shot vax you need the second shot like a month later.
i did NOT have chicken pox as a kid, i am not trying to get shingles. im allergic to everything and have eczema- i do not need shingles!
mrsCommaCausey@reddit

AgentJ0S@reddit

AgentJ0S@reddit
I’m too young for shingles vax and can’t get chickenpox vax without my doctor’s approval. I’ve asked, it’s weird. If I made a stink they’d probably figure it out but I haven’t bothered
mrsCommaCausey@reddit
Yeah, I am too. It’s stupid because half of my friends got shingles in their early to mid thirties.
sunqueen73@reddit
There is an varicella antibody test to test if you ever ja chicken pox. I took the antibody testbin my 20s and it was negative so I got the chicken pox vaccine.
pilkain@reddit
If you never had chicken pox, isn’t it impossible to get shingles?
BikingAimz@reddit
If you’ve never had it, you can still contract chicken pox, and it’s a lot worse than when you were a kid. My husband got chicken pox when he was in his 20s, described the pain as more like shingles than the itching I remember as a kid.
SouthOfOz@reddit
I think you actually get chicken pox instead.
I got my chicken pox titers checked about five years ago because my mom doesn't remember me having it. I didn't have the titers for it, so I got the chicken pox vaccine and then had my first shingles shot about a month ago.

Despises_the_dishes@reddit
I had it last year. Started as excruciating shoulder pain to the point I went to urgent care for an X-ray, could barely move my arm with out crying and screaming. Had an mRI the next day.
Nothing showed up. Literally 24 hrs later I had the shingles rash in the exact same spot as the where the pain originated from.
Started valtrex the same day.
Shingles covered my entire arm, hand and palm. Across my shoulder, chest and started on my back and crossed to the other side.
Apparently it’s not good if it crosses center and jumps to another meridian and I had to take daily photos of my shingles and send them to my PCP.
I had to sleep sitting up, yay bed wedge from Amazon! I couldn’t wear a bra, all fine. Had to wear long sleeves and a cotton glove since it was all over my hand. It was 100+ degree heat wave and here I am long sleeves and a gloves.
For pain, topical lidocaine IS MAGIC! Alternating Tylenol and Aleve was what saved me though. JUST DONT LET IT LAPSE!
Oatmeal soap for bathing and oatmeal lotion for helping healing.
ALSO DONT SCRATCH!

thebunhinge@reddit
Absolutely 100% recommend the vaccine, just be aware that you can still get shingles after receiving it, albeit a MUCH milder case. I’ve had them twice in a very small area under my chin since the vaccine. Not fun, but not nearly as miserable as it would be.
aztochicagogirl@reddit
Can the vax trigger shingles or did they not mention this?
thebunhinge@reddit
It does not trigger them. I’d also had them even as a kid, so it doesn’t appear to prevent them entirely but in my case they don’t spread like wildfire since the vaccine.
thatFATALlady@reddit
I was the same as you…caught it three weeks ago and I’m still dealing with it…I’m immunosuppressed 😫 took my antibiotics and they gave me a two day supply of Percs. The most excruciating pain I’ve ever felt in my life!! Sending love and light to you fellow shinglite! 💙

Don't feel bad. I'm 52 now and had them when I was 22. I'm always worried they will strike again. I will never forget how it made me instantly hit the floor crying when I discovered I had "something" going on around my chest/side/back. The owner of my company expected me to shake it off since it was "just a rash" and get back to work. I went home and made a Dr. appointment instead. He sent me to a dermatologist because he assumed it wasn't shingles since I was so young. The dermatologist took almost two weeks to get into so by the time he saw me he said there wasn't much we could do other than ride it out with some pain management. God that was a horrible month. Shingles is no joke.

john-bkk@reddit
I had a shingles outbreak last year and was out of the country, in one sense, and about to move back to Thailand from being in the US. So I waited most of a week for treatment, and a moderately unpleasant skin condition changed to be much worse, on to back pain, then leg pain. Even though it was a relatively advanced case, and I kind of needed to go on a different range of pain killer, it wasn't as bad as people make out. I spent 24+ hours travelling internationally with it, flying for 17 or so in total, and it was just not so nice.
Obviously letting it go isn't the right call, although getting treatment in a place you don't have good treatment options set up is a problem. If you do let it progress it can take a month or longer to get over it, so even if you see they symptoms as no big deal the duration is pretty annoying.
notevenapro@reddit
Yes. Sativa gummies take my pain away for about 3 hours, 10mg.

ProsodyonthePrairie@reddit
I don’t think so—or rather, your 50% decreases daily until it’s zero. Just got my second shot this week after procrastinating a few months. The pharmacist said many people just get the first but when they want to get the second, if it’s been too long they have to start back over at one.
griff_girl@reddit
I learned about a month ago that the recommendation has recently changed, and you don't have to start over. I didn't realize I needed two shots, and once I did, I procrastinated for like a year because the first one knocked me on my ass so hard. When I finally scheduled the series again, the pharmacist saw I'd had the first one a year prior and told me that the recco had changed, which I've confirmed w/my PCP too.

Got shingles when I was about 40. Was standing naked in the bathroom after taking a shower and said to my wife, "what's this?"
My wife is a doctor and had an antiviral prescription in within 5 minutes and I picked it up and took the first dose within 30. My car was mild. The weirdest thing was that for white 6 months it was like somewhere would randomly stick a pin into the side of a voodoo doll of me. Also, I could feel every drop of water as it ran over the rash in the shower
Just got my second shingrix shot today. I feel like shit.
ProsodyonthePrairie@reddit
But also there COULD be someone with a voodoo you sticking needles in. Got enemies?
Melhoney72@reddit
I felt terrible after my second shot as well.

I got shingles when I was 30 and pregnant. I couldn't take anything because I was pregnant, and then breastfeeding. It was a 6 inch band that stretched from my belly button around to my mid-back. It was by far the worst and most painful part of my pregnancy. It took 18 months to clear up. Please do yourself a favor and get the vaccine.

CecilAlucardX@reddit
I had shingles as a child, weirdly enough. I don't remember taking meds but I do remember oatmeal baths; which honestly were not super fun.
Pye-@reddit
I think you had chicken pox as a child, which most of us did before the vaccine came out. Then that virus lives in your spine forever and might manifest as shingles later in life unless you get the shingles vaccine - which I highly recommend. I had chicken pox as a child and it sucked but nothing like shingles I had as an adult.
CecilAlucardX@reddit
It was specifically a irritating, bumpy rash around my chest, back, and armpits; like a handspan band of suck wrapped around my body. And I do not recall having chicken pox (but my memories start at 4 so its possible I couldve had it younger than that.) This cropped up when I was 8 or 9, and the doctor definitely said shingles.
BabyDriver23@reddit
That sounds like shingles to me! So weird and interesting. Thanks for sharing!
Dark-Empath-@reddit
So why did parents have all those chickenpox parties? Let’s make sure the kids get shingles in later life?
stmigo_24@reddit
I’m curious about this too now.
I know for our family, my mom was insistent on making sure both of my siblings got infected once I came down with it. She always tells the story that she would’ve rather do it once with everyone and get it over with than have to deal with each one of us individually getting it at different times. I very much remember oatmeal baths with all 3 of us in the tub together. I have no doubt there’s photographic evidence of this as well. 😂
Aggravating_Bat3618@reddit
Did you at least get to try maple and brown sugar? Or maybe apple cinnamon.

Torandax@reddit
I know quite a few people who got shingles before they hit 50. They really should lower the age for the vaccine (for insurance coverage) to 45.
PipEmmieHarvey@reddit
I got mine for the first time in my twenties.
elvisndsboats@reddit
Agreed! I was 45, sigh.
FAx32@reddit
Tend to agree, but the indication was all about who the studies were done on (studies were designed for those 50 and older only) and that design came from a FINANCIAL analysis of reducing burden of hospitalization, morbidity and mortality from shingles.
I had it when I was about 23. It SUUUUUUUUCKED. A month of misery and oozing painful chest, then itching for another couple of months. But younger than 50 (60 actually, but 50 is aimed at allowing 20 year for capture of more people) is much less likely to get post herpetic neuralgia (chronic nerve pain in that dermatome) or lose their eyesight or other permanent nerve damage from it, die from it.
While I would love to think giving it at 30 or 40 would still provide those lifelong benefits and save a fair number of people from misery and lost work, unfortunately we don't know because those studies haven't been done.
Anna_Lemming@reddit
Sounds like more studies needed.
Torandax@reddit
I got it a few years before 50. They say periods of high emotional and physical stress can activate the virus and I think that’s what happened.
Capybarely@reddit
Yes, changing the age to match when the varicella vaccine became available would make sense at least! Wikipedia says "The vaccine developed by Hilleman was first licensed in the United States in 1995." So that would put us at (oh God) 31. Heck, anyone who didn't get the varicella vaccine should be covered. (Side note, 1995 was like 8 years ago, so I don't understand how this is possible.)
Anna_Lemming@reddit

Weird. My senior dad got shingles and it was super painful for him.

51 M. Went to get one last week and the GP suggested that I hold off as I haven't had measles before. Kinda glad as needles are a weakness of mine ( thanks COVID), but at the same time was a tad disappointed as it took me a while to build up to going for it.
Eternal_instance@reddit
If you had chicken pox, your primed for shingles. Measles has its own vaccine and doesn't have anything to do with shingles.
fethers42@reddit
Chicken pox, that's the one. Knew it was one of them, but haven't had that either. Thanks for the correction
grumpleskinskin@reddit
If you haven't had chicken pox you can get the vaccine for that too. That's what I had to do when 3 people around me got shingles and 2 kids had chicken pox.
fethers42@reddit
Good to know. I am currently trying to find out what I have been vaccinated against but all the documents have gone digital and it only shows COVID. Building up the will to get a blood test and go from there
Doridar@reddit
Same happened to me but luckily, I spotted the very beginning (thanks herpes for drilling me) and was on acyclovir immediately. In my case, it did not hurt but tickled like hell, It was Just next to my sternum below my right breast.
I was supposed to get my first shot 2 months later, and I did.
Grasshopper_pie@reddit
Can anyone here chime in on this? I tested negative for varicella virus, never had chicken pox and don't have the antibodies. I've read that the shingles vaccine only works if you have the antibodies already and that people who test negative actually need the chicken pox vaccine instead.
My current doctor doesn't seem aware of this, and everything I've read on the CDC and other sites basically says, yeah, you had chicken pox so there's no point in checking. They're just dismissing the possibility entirely.
I know many ppl can get it and be mostly asymptomatic (it happened to my mom, who got surprise shingles). But I tested negative. I just want to be sure I never ever get shingles. I want to do the right thing but cannot get a conclusive answer.
WA_State_Buckeye@reddit

I had shingles in my late twenties and oh man did it suck! I’m 44 now but doc says I have to wait until I’m 50 to get the shot even though I’m super immune compromised.
Active-Confidence-25@reddit
You don’t have to wait. The CDC recommends the shingles vaccine (Shingrix) for all adults aged 50 and older. It is also recommended for adults aged 19 and older who have weakened immune systems or are immunocompromised. Head to Walmart/CVS/Walgreens etc.

I got shingles when I was 41 and training for Ironman. That level of training stresses your body like mad and trying to work 2 jobs AND train was too much for me. I thought it was a heat rash from an 80 mile bike ride in the middle of summer in Hawaii! Luckily I had a very mild case (probably due to my health) and didn’t take the meds. It was SO ITCHY but didn’t really hurt. I found direct Hawaiian strength sunlight felt wonderful.
Took 2 weeks off training and successfully completed a full Ironman 4 weeks later.
I felt shot #2 was worse than my actual case of shingles! I was done with chills and fever for 3 days!

I lost the lottery big time- I have recurrent shingles (from Zostavax in the late 90s). If you catch it early enough, antivirals make a huge difference in healing time. My go-tos for pain control during flares are ice packs and a TENS unit.

A friend put hydrocolloid dressings (basically a nice thicker gel dressing that sticks to your skin and lasts days) on top of all her shingle spots. Helped immensely with the pain, because it shielded her from anything touching them, and also reduced scarring for her. She changed the dressings if they had drainage. Ask your doc if that's appropriate for you. She researched they could heal this way and not left to open air, but do your own research.

I had shingles on my back in my 40’s. It was really painful. My brother got the vaccine and he had a really bad reaction to the second dose. It scared me a bit but didn’t want to go through shingles again so I got the vaccine anyway. Absolutely no reaction to it. Weird since my brother’s reaction was so bad. I guess it’s a crap’s shoot. Definitely glad I got it though because shingles = pain
solsticesunrise@reddit
Anecdotal data, but I had Shingles and the vaccine was nothing. Like, nothing.
Friends that didn’t have Shingles previously (3 total people) all said it was the worst vaccine they ever got. My husband maintains that he’d rather have 2 awful vaccine reactions than shingles (after seeing me with shingles).
I caught it within 16 hours of symptoms, got antivirals, and was miserable for a week, followed by uncomfortable for about 3 weeks.
OP - cold sore medication helped the pain a bit. Cost a bleeding fortune, but was worth it.
LeisureSuiteLarry@reddit
I guess I got lucky. When I got shingles it was just some itchy as fuck welts on my right ribs. Not painful just annoying.
StatusNerve5@reddit
I got shingles at 35. Luckily, it wasn't too bad, just a little uncomfortable. I definitely was not expecting it.
comma_space_erase@reddit
I'm sorry, that happened to me too. I got it on my scalp above my ear and all along the side of my head while I was putting off the shots, but thank goodness shingles didn't go in my eyes.
It's still important to get the shingles vaccine after you recover (I think my doc recommended 6 months) because you can absolutely get it again. The shots aren't that bad. I actually noticed an improvement in my health after my vaccines (I used to get fever blisters frequently). Good luck, I hope you recover quickly.

I believe you can’t get shingles unless you’ve previously had chicken pox. But it is possible to get shingles more than once.
bluealien78@reddit (OP)

24bics@reddit
Same. Maybe old wives tale, but I always understood if you had chicken pox, you are safe from shingles. Now I've seen material that states the virus is still there and could present as shingles. I had CP when I was a teenager. So did my father. He had shingles some years ago and went through hell. I've been fortunate, no issue. I keep thinking about getting the shot or rolling the dice.
hippocampus237@reddit
If you had chicken pox you can get shingles. Shingles is the reawakening of the chicken pox virus that never fully left your system. Not clear what causes the reactivation but stress is thought to play a role in some cases.
The younger generations who were vaccinated against chicken pox will not be susceptible to shingles. It’s a blessing.
24bics@reddit
Basically what I have been hearing/reading. Damn chickenpox looking for a sequel. Ha!
eman_on_1@reddit
That’s right, but a person can get chickenpox from a person that has active shingles if they’ve never had it. That can be from touching the blisters or breathing in virus particles that become airborne from the blisters. Then that person could potentially get shingles later in life.

eman_on_1@reddit
Some people did have chickenpox but didn’t know it or it was missed by the doctor bc it’s possible to be a mild case or be completely asymptomatic.

In that case I really missed out on the lottery, I'm in that "very special" category of getting repeat shingles outbreaks, so I can get anything between 4-12 outbreaks per year.
What I've learned over the years is to use ice packs, ZOVIRAX (cold sore cream - 2 to 3 times a day) and rest is the key as your immune system is in the midst of taking a beating. Be very very aware that shingles can be highly contagious, so be careful with towels, wash your clothes seperately if you're in a shared house hold and use hot water when you do. But also ensure you wash your hands after touching around the sites and keep your hands and fingers contact away from your eyes.
The vaccine may or may not have stopped you having a breakout of shingles but the vaccine would have definitely minimised your symptoms, I really felt the difference before and after my vaccine but I'm sorry to say welcome to the club.

So sorry you’re going through this, OP.
I had a heck of a time getting my shingles outbreak on my arm diagnosed when I was in my 30s because I was “too young”. My PCP thought it might be a blood clot in my arm and sent me for an ultrasound. It was definitely not a blood clot.
By the time it was finally diagnosed by an oral pathologist I worked with, it was too late to start antiviral medication. I am a dental hygienist, and trying to work with that arm was excruciating. It was six months before the deep discomfort finally subsided.

I had shingles in my late 30s. It popped up again later that year and immediately (like same day or next day) went to the doc for an antiviral prescription. What I learned is that the sooner you take the antiviral, the better. It truly minimizes the experience. After that, I didn’t think I really, truly needed the vaccine, but this thread has convinced me otherwise, so thanks!

Had it last summer, got a mild sunburn on my shoulder on Monday, painful itching Wednesday, blisters popped and it was on the way out by the following Monday. Only thing that was really bad was the teeth sensitivity for about three months after.
SnooBooks5315@reddit
I'm sorry you got it. Ask your doctor to call in some lidocaine cream, it will help numb your skin and give you a little relief. Hope you have a speedy recovery
ViolettaQueso@reddit
Shingles requires the big guns of pain meds.
SnooBooks5315@reddit
I agree but applying lidocaine directly helps, in addition to the pain meds.
ViolettaQueso@reddit
For sure. Nerve pain is a special kind of hell and the topical numbing agents and patches help.
Anna_Lemming@reddit
Damn. I'm sincerely sorry to hear that.
As a middle ( female) child I pestered the fuck out of my older and younger brother to get the shots STAT, because I heard shingles is just an unruly pain.
Also because, (worst fear unlocked) I heard you can get shingles IN YOUR FUCKING EYEBALLS.
Signed, Whatever, but get your shingles shots please.
_ItsTheLittleThings_@reddit
I recommend you see a pain specialist to help you through the worst of it.
Odd_Astronomer_8804@reddit
I had it a few years ago, got the antiviral on the first day and the pain was still intense. The post-herpatic pain/numbness went on sporadically for a few years. I wish I'd gotten the vaccine earlier too.
SonnyBonoStoleMyName@reddit
Hi highly recommend buying Abreva cold sore ointment and putting it on the rash two or three times a day, use a q-tip! Maybe doctor can give a prescription for a bigger tube, less money.

Oh no. I’m so sorry.

Vaccine doesn’t work and the side effects of it are horrible. I had shingles 11 times before taking the vaccine. The worst case of shingles I ever had was 11 months to the day AFTER the vaccine. It’s a bunch of crap
Vladd3456@reddit

printerdsw1968@reddit
The shingles vax side effects last a day. A bout of shingles goes on for much longer than that, and can linger for weeks.
1968Chick@reddit
My husband is on his 3rd round of shingles, relatively mild but itchy & annoying each time.
Friend got the Vax after having it once and ended up getting it 1000x worse after the Vax.
I dunno...it seems a gamble.
Pitiful-Visual-4510@reddit
They’re not ready for that conversation.

Happy cake day!
burrmanmartin@reddit
Indeed the shingles vaccine can trigger a flare, most often after the first dose in older adults. Cases tend to be mild and the overall benefit of completing the two-dose series remains clear. Hopefully, this gives your friend protection going forward in that shingles can reoccur as our immune system wanes with age and individual stressors.
SushiGirlRC@reddit
That really sucks. I guess be glad it's not on your face?
Why did you think being healthy/active would keep you from getting it, though? I hear that in the commercials, and shingles literally doesn't care! It's already a virus in your body.
bluealien78@reddit (OP)
I didn’t think that. I’m very pro-vaccinations. I stated it to set the context that I’m not an unhealthy person.
SushiGirlRC@reddit
I just asked because I've only heard that said on the vaccine ads, I've never heard an actual person say it. I was just curious as to the thinking behind it.
What_if_I_fly@reddit
My cousin had it on her face, neck and ribs. Unfortunately it looked like a slap handprint on her face in red, and her husband (very sweet, very supportive of her and basically worships her) got very bad dirty looks when he took her to the doctors office and the pharmacy.
SushiGirlRC@reddit
A coworker, my mom's neighbor, and my stepdad had it on their face. I still think my stepdad's triggered crazy fast growth of a brain tumor he didn't know he had. He died from it about 9 months after the shingles had subsided.
HarmonicShepherd@reddit
I’m sorry that happened to you. If it’s any comfort, many people have to wait until 50 for insurance to cover it.

Lidocaine ointment or patches. It numbs that burning, itching, stinging pain. It's available OTC now, or there's a slightly more potent version of the patches called Lidoderm that's available via prescription.
I've had shingles multiple times in the past 15 years (I'm 50F, the first time I got shingles was at age 36 😱) and those lidocaine products save my sanity every time.
mps_1969@reddit
I use lidocaine for my foot joint pain it deadens the nerve pain signals .

There's no cure for shingles, but topical creams containing things like lidocaine and capsaicin can soothe pain and discomfort caused by shingles. I use it for my foot joint pain it deadens the nerve signals .

I had it twice. The post neural pain was awful too the first time I got it I was in my 30s. Pure hell
JenniferJuniper6@reddit
I got my first shot, mainly thanks to discussions on this sub—so, thanks, guys. Now I’m just crossing my fingers that I make it to the second shot without coming down with it. Generally my immune system will fuck with me whenever possible, so we’ll see. (I had chickenpox twice.)
disgirl4eva@reddit
I’ve heard the shot will take you down for a couple days. Is that true? My husband is 50 and reluctant to get it. But I told him to suck it up and just get it, lol.
IcedBlueberryLemon@reddit
The first shot, which I got around 11 am, depleted my energy and knocked me over within 8 hours. Slept all night and got up the next day totally fine, no pain. Second shot months later didn't knock me over, but my arm hurt for several days. No other symptoms. Note: 61F, pretty healthy (only had two light colds in the last 12 years). Got the shots 2 years ago.
highnumber@reddit
It was bad the day after the first shot. I popped a couple naproxen and went to work. My job is literally walking around outside all day and I was fine.
brianbeck@reddit
I got the second dose two fridays ago. I got it in the morning and started feeling under the weather in the late afternoon. That night and next day I felt horrible. Worse than when I had Covid. By Sunday I was feeling much better. Glad I’m done.
some_dude3645@reddit
I was down for a few days after the 1st shot. But I had several vaccines (dpt, pneumonia, flu) at the same time. I was mostly feeling really tired the day after but bounced back the next day.

Ugh. Have had shingles twice — such an evil virus. I took an antiviral and also went to a Chinese Medicine doctor acupuncturist. Just have to ride it out. I used topical lidocaine. Ultimately asked my doc for some Vicodin. Hang in there!

I got the shingles vaccine the day my friend’s shingles spread to his eye. A welt came up right above an old chickenpox scar on my forehead. All I could think was - “The disease is IN ME.”

My MIL had it on her eyeball. I had to take her to the eye doctor every other week for like 4 months and at the end, she can see better than I do.
Artistic_Head_5547@reddit
I’m immunocompromised and had a whole summer dedicated to an ongoing shingles infection that took forever to resolve. Tingles started the week after kids got out of school. Had it from my bra band down to mid thigh from my belly button/midline to my spine on one side. It was awful. I bought dresses 3 sizes too big and didn’t wear underwear for 3 months. We went on a trip a week and a half before school started and the heat still got to me at times.
The best thing I found was to put anything with menthol in the freezer and rub that on. It seemed to disrupt the pain cycle for me. I prob used that stuff 5 times a day. There was one that looked like wide deodorant and that was the easiest to put on.
If you have recurring shingles, insist on seeing an infectious disease doctor. She put me on the medication for something like 2 or 3 months rather than the standard 3 weeks or whatever.
SunGregMoon@reddit
I had it once around 30. Doctor checked me once a week, it lasted about 3-1/2 weeks. Pain was way worse at night, it was on my right shoulder and shoulder blade going a little up my neck. Laying down was brutal so Doc gave me Tylenol3 for nighttime. I've been dvised not to get the vaccine. Good luck OP!

physhgyrl@reddit
I got it in my late 30s. My lymph nodes in my groin were swollen and painful and the rash was on my lower back and I think that I had a fever also. But it wasn't very painful. I remember hearing that it was excruciating and when the urgent care dr told me that I had shingles I thought maybe he had misdiagnosed me. It lasted a few weeks I think. Like 6 weeks. I either have a very high pain tolerance or I had a mild case. My energy levels were fine though. I got bronchitis and had a 103.5 fever also while I had shingles. But I was still drinking, smoking, working and going out. I even got a new boyfriend at the same time.
I've never had painful period cramps , I cracked a tooth in half recently and I don't have a tooth ache yet. The dentist told me that it's really painful. I looked at him and said I didn't know it was supposed to be painful. I asked him for pain meds after me told me that though. But it was pretty obvious that I wasn't feeling any pain. I just like how they make me feel. I think maybe my body doesn't feel pain very well. I'm very sick right now also with some sort of chest and throat infection. I'm coughing up green gunk, my chest feels heavy, and my throat is"sore". But not really. It's like I should have a sore throat because I know that I'm sick. But I don't. I've been sleeping all day though. But I don't feel sick. I feel really great actually. It's been a great day of napping. I have tons of energy still and I've smoked a pack of cigarettes and I should have a really bad hangover. I don't know I guess I don't feel pain. My ex used to say that he's never seen me sick. But he has. I just don't get sick when I'm sick. I stay away from people when I'm sick though. Because what is mild for me is bad for others.
Hope you feel better soon
BeebsMuhQueen@reddit
My husband had it in his late 30s; I think I had something similar triggered in my 20s when I was under severe stress (my scalp broke out and I was soaking it in tea tree oil cotton ball’s) I was in severe pain. My chicken pox when I was 9 was pretty bad, but not as bad as some kids in my class.
imgrendel@reddit
Even if you had a mild case of chicken pox, you can still get shingles. I had the chicken pox when I was 6 months old. I only had a single chicken pox spot. Yet, I had shingles in my eye at the age of 42.

elder millennial/cusp of gen x and I got shingles in a small, very intense patch across my abdomen at 36. my doctor couldn't believe I'd gotten it so young. get the vaccine as soon as you're able - the old wives tale that you'll only get it once is patently false. also get your doctor to give you a standing rx or valtrex and be ready to take it at the slightest sign of that tell tale lightning bolt pain
happyplaceshere@reddit
Profoundly uncomfortable means you beat the worst of the pain. If you get antivirals in the first 24 to 48 hours you can usually avoid the worst side effects
Open_Confidence_9349@reddit
Yeah, OP may get lucky. I certainly did. I ran to urgent care about 4 hours after the bumps started showing up. I was 33 and had no clue what it could be. I thought I might have caught something from my students, I couldn’t figure out why the rash was on my back though.

Get your Shingles Vaccine at you local pharmacy. Any pharmacy. I was 48, my pharmacist at the grocery store said she’d check to see if insurance would cover it before 50 and they did.
Many insurance companies WILL cover the vaccine BEFORE 50. You just need your pharmacy to check.
Super sore arm after both shots, but that’s it for me.
Mountain_Ladder_4906@reddit
Have yall had a hard time with the vaccine? Scared to get it

I had no issues other than a very sore arm and extra tiredness the next day, but I got it on a Friday in case of anything. I took two 600 mg ibuprofen and slept in and I was fine
JoyousZephyr@reddit
Please don't be scared. I had only a very mild case of shingles on one shoulder-blade, and I was miserable for a couple of weeks. With the vaccine, I felt a tired and feverish for 24 hours. No comparison.
Mountain_Ladder_4906@reddit
So you got shingles after getting the vaccine?
JoyousZephyr@reddit
No. Got shingles at age 48. Got the vaccine a few years later.
GreatSaltLiquor@reddit
I went in expecting the worst because I react strongly to the flu and Covid shots. Covid shot, for me, is 2 days of 102-103 fevers and bedridden-level dizziness.
First shot was like having the beginning of a sickness come on, build up for a day, and then subside. I may have had one minor fever for two hours. Second shot, 4 mos later, 36 hours of yick, 12 hours in the middle were 100-101 fever. There were about four hours in the middle there where the discomfort was steady, the rest was distractible. Both days felt like I got punched in the arm. Those lasted about four days ‘til I could sleep on that shoulder again comfortably. For reference Tetanus peaked much more painfully but didn’t linger as long.
Telmak2112@reddit
I got the first shot last Friday morning. I felt like I had the flu all night. But, by midday Saturday I was fine again. I’m a bit worried about the second one though. I’ve heard it is typically worse.
thermal_envelope@reddit
No worse than a flu, and doesn't last as long. Just set aside some time for recovery. Catch up on sleep and Netflix.
JeanneMusickBooker@reddit
It’s two doses, a couple months apart. Have them stab you in your “other” arm, you will be sore for a couple days. I didn’t have negative side effects, just a little tired on day one. They say shingles pain can be debilitating for weeks - the shot is only uncomfortable for a day or two. Be brave!
CommanderSincler@reddit
No, and I highly recommend it. My father got shingles, didn't get it treated in a timely manner and it ended up disrupting his nervous system. The man was in pain for years down one side of his back. Wearing shirts became highly uncomfortable.
Get treatment and advocate for yourself OP. You don't want to live with this shit

I got it last summer at 49. I noticed some spots on my back while trying on a dress at Marshalls. Looked at my back the next morning and saw that they had gotten worse. It was the 4th of July so I had to go to the ER to get meds.
Planned to get the shot right after my 50th in March but my husband was in and out of the hospital. I couldn't risk having a bad reaction to it and be out of commission and not be able to take care of him. He still has some issues so I'll probably have to wait until the fall to get it.

savorie@reddit
Not necessarily, not universally. That is a guideline that some places follow to the letter, and others are more loose about it.
Chemical_Author7880@reddit
FWIW you may not have been able to get it at your age. My husband went through this in his mid-40s. He’d tried to get the vaccine and was denied. They said the insurance would not cover it until 50 without a doctor’s note and his doctor said he wasn’t at risk.
Then he got it. As cases go it seemed not as bad as it could be but he did end up with some long term fatigue problems. It’s been a few years and he’s just now feeling like himself.
He went ahead and got the chickenpox vaccine series after this, hoping it would be enough to prevent another outbreak. He is counting the days until he is 50.
Not sure if it is a state to state issue, but it seems like something that wouldn’t be.
Don’t blame yourself for not getting it at your age.
I wish you a better recovery than he had!❤️

Go to the doctor and get antivirals! They can help shorten the rash and pain and may even help prevent neuralgia after the infection.

100 % antivirals as soon as you feel the tingle. If given eay enough it will shorten duration and decrease severity (a little).

Carbamazepine can help too. Maybe other seizure meds.

When I first got my cat, she was terrified of food, and it turns out she had something called stomatitis, which is basically an autoimmune disease where her body thinks that plaque needs to be attacked, so her mouth was an extreme pain. Other cat was like “this is my lot in life now.”
HanaGirl69@reddit

Rikulf@reddit
If you had received the shingles shot nine years ago, it would be rapidly losing it's effectiveness now. There is no booster shot. That means that if you get the shot when you're 50, you have little to no resistance when you're 70. Shingles will be much harder on you when you're 70.
On the other hand, they may have a booster shot available in 10-20 years. I'm other words, getting the shot when you're young or waiting is a gamble.
acatwithnoname@reddit

Shingles is the reactivation of the chicken pox virus. And it was entirely stress-related reactivation. I had chicken pox when I was 6. Doctor confirmed my thing at 11-12 was shingles, not measles. It was only around my waistline, not all over as it would be with measles.

Tndnr82@reddit
I've heard. I'm already disabled and live with chronic pain. Guess I'll be turning up the volume for a few days in August.
Cold_in_Lifes_Throes@reddit
My second shot wasn’t too bad. I was expecting the horrible things I had been told, but other than a really sore arm and feeling sluggish the next day it wasn’t bad. I hope your second shot is uneventful.
blacfd@reddit
Good luck
Typical-Spinach-6452@reddit
But it sure beats shingles!!
blacfd@reddit
Without question.
No_Alarm_3993@reddit
Amen to that. I'm disabled and already have chronic pain, but after seeing the hell that the disease puts people through I just sucked it up and took extra pain medication for like a week.
mortyella@reddit
Not always. I got the second shot with no problem. However, about a week after the first shot I got Shingles. It was a mild case but still sucked.
GramPam68@reddit
Well you convinced me to stop waffling and get the damn vaccine. I’m mid 50’s and work with kids, so it’s dodging the germ lottery every day. I told my younger coworkers about chicken pox parties back in the day and they seemed horrified. Yes, our parents intentionally exposed us to a disease to “get it over with” but our friends were there and chicken pox party remains one of my few early memories.😂
pumpkindonut123@reddit
I remember that my mom sent me to my friends house to catch chickenpox from her. And then I remember oatmeal bath and lots of them which were fabulous. do you?
jenij730@reddit
You can’t “catch” shingles. The virus that causes shingles is already in you if you have had chicken pox.
Ckc1972@reddit
Definitely get the vaccine. I met someone who had shingles in their eyes and it was brutal.
Spirited_Voice_7191@reddit
I'm not allowed to play that lottery: Guillaume Barre means my doc says, no flu shot to start then shingles. I asked about others: "Thankfully you have all the traditional ones. . . . Maybe if something like a super-covid starts spreading."
pumpkindonut123@reddit
Well that sucks and I'm sorry to hear that. It's like oh you had something terrible so now maybe you're gonna have to get something else terrible. what a double whammy. Hugs
Left_Connection_8476@reddit
Sorry, I left you a comment meant for someone else.
Left_Connection_8476@reddit
I've been loosely planning to get dose #1 next week. Did you have any side effects?
MariaInconnu@reddit
I got shingles in...2019, maybe? You have Mt sympathy.
firedragon1211@reddit
I rawdogged shingles while in India. Doc wouldn’t look at the rash because it was under my sports bra- gave me multi-vitamins and some Tylenol.
Now I have post-herpatic neuralgia. So I’ve got that going for me, which is nice.
VintageFashion4Ever@reddit
Hi. Hello. I had it for eight years and the thing that finally worked was alpha lipoic acid. IANAD and YMMV, but it has been used in Europe for decades to control nerve pain. It was prescribed to me when I had a herniated disc.
firedragon1211@reddit
I’ll see if I can get it prescribed. Thanks for the tip!
Ferrally_Polite@reddit
I’m looking at my husband dying from the pain of a herniated disc rn. Can I buy this or is it prescription only?
VintageFashion4Ever@reddit
It is OTC. It is a supplement. Take 1200 mg of the alpha lipoic acid, but be careful if he is prone to low blood sugars. I ended up having surgery and it was wonderful. I also, highly recommend the Aspercreme with lidocaine. It has 4% lidocaine. Prescription strength is 5%.
Ferrally_Polite@reddit
Tysm!

I’ve had shingles twice in my life…first time I was 21 and the second time I was 47. I’m so sorry you got it and I hope the science helps!
Suitable-Lawyer-9397@reddit
This happened to me as well. The good news is it was a Sunday, I went to Urgent Care and whatever they prescribed cleared it up immediately! I believe I still got the vaccine later that year. But I only had one tiny cluster on my rib cage when I caught it.
123123000123@reddit
I’m 36 with post geriatric neuralgia from shingles. I’m in this sub because of a shingles post lol.
I have pain up and down the left side of my body, including my face. My ear hole swells up every once in a while. It’s been 7 months. Sucks.
Get ur shots! They won’t let me get it.
Hour-Weather7962@reddit
I'm almost 2 years (August) with the PHN. Take gabapentin daily and my rib cage and left breast are still numb to touch. Stabbing pain often inside. This shit is no joke
Miss_Interociter@reddit
Definitely confirm with your doctor if this is wise but mine had me get the shingles vaccine to help with the PHN after I had shingles in my early 40s. It definitely helped; I no longer have to take gabapentin for it.
Fitz_2112b@reddit
Wow, that is awful. Hope that clears up!
Realistic-Bass2107@reddit
Getting my second shot Wednesday
Appropriate_Oven_292@reddit
I had it before I really knew what it was. Hurt to sit down for a week. Lol
Sore_Wa_Himitsu_Desu@reddit
Oh man. I’m sorry. I got it as soon as they would let me get it. In 57 now and whatever else’s goes wrong at least I don’t have to deal with that mess.
Narrow-Research-5730@reddit
I had shingles. I thought it was pretty mellow; some itchy warm red spots. I went to work for the first week with it because I thought it was allergy rashes. Once the doctor finally diagnosed, it was too late to prescribe anything. Maybe you’ll get lucky in it too.
SinoSoul@reddit
So sorry to hear. I got my shot(s) at 50 and I laughed at my PCP for being so worried… jokes on me.
Whatnowgoddammit@reddit
I got mine last year at 59 after the doc kept bugging me..lucked out I guess (cept that 2nd shot was a MF)
SinoSoul@reddit
It was indeed. F’d me up I thought I caught the flu.
lpan000@reddit
Had shingles. By chance, was chatting casually with a doctor, and she said, that looks like shingles. She prescribed antivirals, helped make it last just two weeks.
mollymarie123@reddit
Look into taking Lysine as a supplement to help you get over shingles. I first got shingles at 37 and since then get it every few years even though I have had the vaccine. This happens to a small percentage of people. Lysine helps as well as red light therapy. Plus get the prescription.
SKBGrey@reddit
Sorry to hear it. 50 and just got both my shingles and pneumococcal vaccines yesterday. Not sure which one laid me out but pretty fatigued with a little headache. Still better than shingles, I'd imagine - Hope you recover quickly and let us know if the THC helps!
sisypheanist@reddit
I had it in my 30s, felt like I was walking around with a knife stuck in my side. Awful!
I-used2B-a-Valkyrie@reddit
Gabapentin or pregalbin for pain, I also had to use tramadol (I’m allergic to Gabapentin and I didn’t tolerate the pregalbin very well). Mine was “rashless” at age 48, so by the time we figured out what it was, it was too late for antivirals and I was rawdogging it for SIX WEEKS. I do not recommend this at all!
I had a double mastectomy for my 50th birthday 2 months ago, but I finally got cleared to get the shot. As soon as we get back from the beach, I’m doing it. We leave in 3 days and I don’t want to be miserable if I have a bad reaction to the shot.
HistoricalStatus5577@reddit
I got my first shot a week before 50 and insurance made me pay but oh well - several friends at work have had it. If it makes you feel better they range in age from 25 up, all well under 50 so don’t take it as an age thing. Somehow it always happens on work travel so I’ve seen it twice when the person was debating whether to get help. Take care and good luck.
Crafty_Ish1973@reddit
I got shingles back in my 30s. It was a small rash on my right side along my ribs. It lasted just over a week. It was excruciating. I hated every second of it.
I got the vaccine as soon as I could after that. It hurt far less than the shingles.
moneypenny88@reddit
Same. Got it when I was 30. Such fun.
Pattyannlu@reddit
Oh no! I just had my second shot on Sunday. Thank goodness no bad reactions to either. Sore arm for a few days and super tired the first days. Had shingles in my late twenties. Had mild chicken pox as a kid and then came in contact with someone just getting over it while I was under an unbelievable amount of stress. Last year a friend’s mom got it on her face and it was horrible. We all went for our vaccination after that. Get in with your primary doctor to follow up. They may be able to prescribe something for you. I remember some sort of prescription cream that really helped. 🩷
MiserableCancel8749@reddit
I took the vaccine when I became eligible for it. The first shot was misery for several days. The second wasn't so bad.
It may be true that the only thing worse than the vaccine is NOT having the vaccine.
Capital-Meringue-164@reddit
It is 100 percent true.
UnderwhelmingAF@reddit
I just turned 50 and got shingles last week before I could get the vaccine. Fortunately it’s only in my right arm right now and I got on the anti-viral pretty quickly, but it hurts like hell.

Try Gabapentin. I had lingering burning in my abdomen, but Gabapentin took care of it

I 58F have had shingles twice in my 50’s. The first time was a light rash on my flank (I actually felt it pop up-Crazy). The second time was deep in my armpit area and along my back shoulder both on the skin and under the skin or under the bone it was very painful. I had no idea what was going on for days and then finally the rash popped up!! After some investigating, I read that you can get shingles multiple times and they will probably get worse and worse~so by golly I better get those shots!
Less_Than_Average1@reddit
Got shingles when I went on a bender in Costa Rica. My mom was at the end of her life after being sick for 10 months.
I was in my early 30’s. Went to a sports bar in Costa Rica with my buddy to watch a game. Ended up taking copious amounts of shots. Alcohol mixed with grief caused me to have a nervous breakdown. I’m convinced the stress I was under after taking care of my mom and watching her deteriorate - along with the drinking was a perfect recipe to whack my immune system.
Got home and developed a rash on my side that felt like someone was taking a cheese grater to my skin. Doctor said it was shingles. I haven’t had a reaction since and that was over 10 years ago.
Human_Evidence_1887@reddit
Totally plausible that this ordeal precipitated shingles. Sorry for your loss.
Less_Than_Average1@reddit
Appreciate ya. Thankfully, I’ve matured and discovered therapy instead of drinking myself to oblivion.

I had my first outbreak in my 20's. 27 years old. I thought it was a rash that wouldn't go away. Dr. said it's rare, stress induced shingles outbreaks so young. There was medication but he wouldn't prescribe it to me due to the possibility of imaginary future children that I never wanted or had.
MsAdventuresBus@reddit
My doc won’t give it to me until I turn 50. I went to see him 10 days before I turned 50 and he told me to come back next year AFTER I turned 50. I probably should go see him.
Las_Vegan@reddit
You don’t need a prescription just go to a local pharmacy that has a shots clinic like CVS. You’ll feel better knowing you got the shots and it’s a lifetime dose.
Numerous_Bad1961@reddit
Go to Walgreens, CVS, Safeway, etc and they will give it to you today.

No idea if you can get the vaccine while actively experiencing shingles but don’t forget to get the second shot. I don’t remember how long the blisters persisted but I remember keeping a bowl of cold water by my bed for compresses
Competitive_Long_190@reddit
On my third bout of eye shingles at 47. 2012 was the first time. I can’t get the vaccine and I risk blindness each time!

This. I had shingles in my 20s. Miserable -- and that is the time in life when you can probably best tolerate the pain, itching and oozing.
I got a COVID shot and second shingles on the same day. Had pretty strong reactions to every COVID shot I took but was overjoyed to get them (I'm in healthcare, saw way too many deaths that first year including a couple people my age who were not that unhealthy otherwise). Was a bad day but 1% as bad as the actual best case scenario with the disease shingles.

You didn't lose the shingles lottery. You got screwed by the CDC, which doesn't allow the shot for most people until age 50, even though the age of first shingles has been getting younger and younger and the recommendation needs to be changed.

MacabreMori113@reddit
Hubby got it at 49. Honestly didn't know what to make of the rash because it was small. Then all of a sudden the pain started. Went to urgent care but didn't mention the rash. Sent him home with muscle relaxers. Later that night he looked at me and said "babe I think I'm dying please take me to the ER." This man has stabbed himself, broken bones etc and not even winced. When we got there and waited a light bulb went off and I googled shingles. In triage we told them hey there's this rash and they confirmed it.
The punchline is after that whole ordeal he was still "too young" to get the vaccine. Go figure

That sucks! I hope you feel better soon. For what it's worth in my country (USA) they would not give it to me before 50. I got it at 48 same age as you, but only because I was taking a drug that increased the risk of shingles. So you might not have been able to get it anyway, maybe that will make you feel a little better.
killerwithasharpie@reddit
Interestingly the rash you get shows up where your chicken pox first manifested in your body. So sorry you are going through this. Unfair sequel to chicken pox!

Sorry that sucks! My wife and I were talking about the shots a few years ago and she had already had them. Told me I really needed to make an appointment. I had it a couple of years ago. It usually takes five weeks to run its course but getting on meds early should help lessen the severity and possibly duration. Good luck and get your vaccine in a few months.
