Who was your Late Night Horror Host?
Posted by PollutionZero@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 259 comments
A lot of people did the whole TNT Monstervision thing, but I was a Commander USA's Groovy Movies enjoyer. I'd also stay up WAY too fucking late and watch Up All Night (Gilbert or Rhonda, didn't matter to me).
Locally, we had Sammie Terry but I think he was off the air by the time I hit Jr. High.
Who'd you watch all night? Were you a Joe Bob fan or a Rhonda enjoyer?

Nice. I lived in St Pete from '80-'93
SarahJaneB17@reddit
I just remembered that the other day I couldn't think of the name of a place on St. Pete beach. It was near the Beach Theater. It was like a huge head shop/hippy paraphernalia shop. I used to get music posters and band buttons there for my jacket.
-Granby-@reddit
I don't know the place but it has to be around Treasure Island, Johns Pass, Pass a Grille maybe?
There were a lot of little shops out that way. I don't know about now. I have not been there in years.
SarahJaneB17@reddit
Me either, unfortunately. I miss the beach.
-Granby-@reddit
I enjoyed the beach foe the water as a young kid but as a teen I enjoyed it for the shops. Mad beach and Johns pass had super cool shops. When I was in high school Clearwater beach was the place to be on the weekends at night. I wish I had video of it.
Everyone would go there from all the different highs schools. Tricked out cars. Low riders. Trucks with hot tubs in the back. Driving down the strip at 2 miles an hour (like Will Smith said). Jumping out or cars to hit a bar or go on the beach to fuck around. So many teens out there. The bars would serve drinks or people would bring their own.
It was like a crazy part every Friday and Saturday
SarahJaneB17@reddit
We cruised Clearwater Beach every weekend.
-Granby-@reddit
You know how it was then. It was crazy wasn't it? Like the biggest party ever. The vehicles too. Some while shit.
SarahJaneB17@reddit
Yes, the usual teenage shenanigans, never ran into any serious trouble. The last time I was there 2010 I think, the city wants it to be like an upscale resort. All of the funky shops and bars are long gone, and of course the lot has been closed at night since way before then.

hehe, surely you had cable by '88!
We actually had the most high tech house on the block. Atari 2600, Cable TV with 45 channels AND HBO! We even had the first automatic car on the block for my mom to drive (clutch killed her knees). Dad was a COBOL Programmer.
Hedonistic_Yinzer@reddit
We lived out in the sticks so actually no, we didn't have cable in 1988. I remember watching twin peaks and China Beach with rabbit ears on the TV.
My grandparents had cable. Funky little box on top of the TV with about a dozen switches. I'm pretty sure it was a stolen box, knowing my grandfather. That the cable company was going to" send a bullet down the line" that would kill illegal boxes. When he heard this was going to happen he would run and unplug the thing. For the most part we weren't allowed to touch it. God forbid we deviate from gunsmoke or other such Western.

I was searching the thread to see if any of my fellow yinzers would mention good ol' Chilly Billy š
My parents would shoo me to bed early on Saturday night (because they'd drag me to church on Sunday) when we would finally get home I'd make some quick lunch & watch the rebroadcast after church. Oddly fitting because later in life I had a teacher in college who worked at channel 11 & she said that as soon as Chiller Theater wrapped up taping they would have to tear the set down & put up the 'church set' to broadcast Sunday mass.
I really miss that show & Mr. Cardille. I remember one of the last horror cons he attended with his daughter was out in Monroeville & he was really nice. They were selling DVDs & other things related to Chiller Theater while reminiscing with fans. Good memories š

The "Creature Feature" was on KSHB-41 for several years (before they became the local NBC affiliate) and was hosted by Crematia Mortem (a.k.a. Roberta Solomon). I remember that show airing classic horror B-movies in 3-D with cardboard glasses available from local 7-Eleven stores, and at one point I think they also had a giant, inflatable King Kong perched on top of the Power & Light building in downtown KC.
On a related note, Roberta Solomon was an accomplished radio and TV broadcast personality by day, and was the voice of the Chiefs Radio Network for a while. You can still hear her on occasion saying, "This Chiefs broadcast is brought to you by..."

In southeast Michigan we had The Ghoul, portrayed by the late Ron Sweed.
There's a kind of tribute website that looks like it was done on Geocities circa 1997.

I'm not sure we had a local one in NYC or Philly. If we did, I didn't watch, so yeah, Caroline/Rhonda/Gilbert for me. Svengoolie now that MeTV exists.

Sivad! (Davis spelled backwards)
Watson Davis was a local TV horror host and "Monster of Ceremonies" for āFantastic Featuresā than ran from 1962 to 1972 featuring classic sci-fi and horror movies.
Basically the same format that was picked up by Elvira and Tales From The Crypt.
