High house numbers?

Sometimes, here, the numbers get very high. Like 35421 or even 327506. Strangely enough, we lived in this particular area from the nineties, lived in 3 different houses and each had a one-number street address.

What makes Volkswagen rank so low and why don’t more people buy them?

markmakesfun@reddit

Yeah, I’m not restricting my knowledge only to the car we owned. Your car experiences are anecdotal as most are. Read the comments here if you want a more rounded opinion. My opinion was added because people began (as they always seem to) preaching how great VW was if people would just do maintenance to the car. That’s a bullshit position. No “regular maintenance” will prevent parts just falling off the car. The premise is just dumb. I’m far from the only one with past problems.

Nah, sorry. That’s just “excuse creation.” I don’t care who built it, cars that fall apart of their own volition are poorly constructed. I don’t believe that “It’s the owner’s fault!” Bullshit. VW’s were (I don’t have one now) built poorly. Parts fell off the car. Rubber rotted. Electrical systems would just quit for no reason. The folding top developed holes in it. One brake caliper stopped working. How are those the owner’s fault? Answer: they aren’t. German car fan repeat this hogwash over and over. “German carmakers just expect maintenance to be done on time!” Great strategy! When someone’s car falls apart blame them for the problem. “Well, if you had done regular maintenance the chrome trim wouldn’t have fallen off the car!” Anyone who believes them deserves what they get.

VW=death from a thousand papercuts. Blaming it on the owner is bullshit. On my wife’s car, the trim fell off the side of it driving down the street. What deferred maintenance produced that? The gas pedal stopped working because a rubber grommet rotted away and fell off. How was that my wife’s fault? I could give a half dozen more, but it’s too depressing to remember.

Any car driven more slowly improves gas mileage. It is absolutely nothing to do with it being a Prius. Prius drivers don’t drive “extra slowly” to save gas. Prius’s already get 2To three times the mileage of trucks and SUV’s. There is no case where a truck or suv gets better mileage than a Prius. That’s a wives tale.

May I ask an elementary question about hybrids?

Posted by BlebNevus@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 124 comments

markmakesfun@reddit

I’m not sure why people presume that hybrids get “low average” mileage from highway driving. On freeway driving, with a tailwind, I got 65mpg during highway driving with a Prius. How is a standard ICE truck getting “comparable” mileage? Answer: they don’t. I guess it makes people feel better that their vehicle gets less than 30 in highway driving? But it lacks reality. Just like ICE cars, hybrids get a better mileage figure on “easy” trips and a lower mileage figure on “difficult” trips. It’s not mysterious. It’s not “opposite of ICE vehicles.”

My landlord had a Doberman that was given to him. It was large and untrained. It was either running loose in the yard snapping and leaping all over people walking into the house or barking in the back yard if anyone dare pass the back window of the apartment. One day I passed the back window and the dog “lit up” again like he always did. A few minutes later I walked past the window expecting the violent act, but the dog wasn’t paying attention. For some reason, it pissed me off and I smacked the window and the dog let loose again, growling and barking violently. A light bulb appeared over my head. From then on, every time I went near the back of the house I made absolutely sure to go to the window and make enough noise to get the dog churned up and barking. Every time. After a couple of weeks the dog went back to his old owners and we heard nothing further about it. Bye bye you stupid pain-in-the-ass animal!

Another “I can’t stand this” option: instead of stopping their barking, see if you can keep them barking ceaselessly, day and night? After a relatively short time, something will happen.

Do you personally call it the Emergency Brake or the Parking Brake?

Posted by ian9921@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 580 comments

markmakesfun@reddit

Sure they do. An electronic brake doesn’t require power to keep it applied. You can disconnect the battery and it still stays applied. Instead of thinking that applying power to the brake “turns it on” and removing power “turns it off”, think of it this way: the brake mechanism is a two position lever. When you press the button under power, it flips the lever from one position to another. If the power is off, you can’t flip the lever either way, brake or no brake. If the power goes off, the brake stays in the position it was in when you set it last. So powered brakes aren’t questionable about how they work. It’s pretty straight-forward.

I did. I was renting within an over-55 condo complex. I found it very enjoyable. The people who lived there had a personal goal to meet people and have contact with the other folks who lived there. They were some of the nicest people I’ve ever shared space with. People often presume older people are inherently unhappy. I suppose some are. But I saw little of that. I would move back there tomorrow if I could. I still have friends there. Great people and amazingly easy-going.

Why would a “knockoff” pair of underwear have the actual name but an altered logo? It makes zero sense. Fruit of the Loom was never so “exclusive” that anyone would make a “knockoff” for the US market. Plus the timeline absolutely fails. People are claiming they saw the logo for 30-40 years! It’s freaking hilarious!

Fruit of the loom controversy

The Cornucopia existed much longer than an underwear company. It was a common image for Thanksgiving every year, from the time I was in first grade. That was in the early sixties. Fruit of the Loom never used one. If you remember differently, your memory isn’t working well in this case. People are being silly. If a bad company wanted to “fake” a counterfeit underwear brand, why would they keep the name identical, but change the logo to something else? The concept contains no logic. The company that owns Fruit of the Loom says the brand never used a cornucopia in their logo. What possible reason would they have to lie about it? It wasn’t illegal, it wasn’t immoral and it wasn’t criminal. They could have done it if they wanted to. But they never wanted to. Answer resolved. -30-

Shazam was real. It was a character formerly named “Captain Marvel” now owned by DC. Red costume, secret identity was a kid who shouted SHAZAM to change into the hero. The letters in SHAZAM denoted the “gods” that provide the power to the boy. That is real, actual media. DC never let some lowball movie producers use a trademark for free that they paid for. There was never a movie named “Shazam” starring Sinbad, the comedian. It never happened. Lots of people claimed they can “prove it”, but no one ever has, because it is a fantasy. Not reality.
