I have a box of Dixie cups in my classroom. It's perfect for when the students share drinks. I don't allow "waterfalls" in my classroom and give them a cup instead. I also use them for portion control- like I bring in a bag of pretzels for trail mix or whatever, a Dixie cup is the perfect size

They are another disposable item in a landfill that could be a washable cup. Each person in the bathroom gets a cup. You wash them regularly. Low cost, no waste.

My parents were too frugal for Dixie cups, but I think my mom also thought they were tacky. Other bathroom things she thought were tacky: toilet paper in different colors or with designs, toilet seat covers and floor mats that hugged the toilet, weird crochet toilet paper or Kleenex box covers.

My son has some issues and one was he would only drink water out of 3 oz paper bathroom cups. I refused to buy the disposable plastic kind because he went through so many of them. Then the pandemic happened, and I could not find the the 3 oz paper cups for love nor money. I finally bought a stack of cheap plastic cups from Target, and he drank out of those, putting those he used in the dishwasher. So it’s possible that people got used to not being able to buy them and switched to something else.

I got the popup dispensed 25 years ago and still have it in the medicine cabinet. It was super handy when the kids were little to measure out doses of medicine when they were sick and not worrying about cross contamination on the cup that came with the bottle. I still have a nearly full pack of cups too. The youngest is 23 this month so they haven't gotten a lot of use in the last 10-15 years 😄

The 3 oz size I like, in paper is hard to find where I live. Finally had to order some from Amazon, in a bigger quantity than I wanted, but it worked for me. I have lots of house guests, so I like to keep them in the bathrooms and they do get used

I never had growing up. Got them when my kids were little as that is when I first saw them. Now I have the mini solo cups and I just keep one for myself and covering my toothbrush. I get rid of it couple times a year. I've used several different brands and styles over the years. I use them in the summer to put apple cider vinegar for the fruit flies to "swim" in. No soap needed.

I found a couple of dispensers at the thrift store that sit on the counter. If you turn it one way, it uses the tiny 3oz cups but if you turn it over it uses the larger 5oz cups. I got it after a glass was broken in the bathroom (by my husband, not a child). In the 70s, I remember we had the dispensers that stuck to the tile next to the sink.

They are getting hard to find. I ordered 600 on Amazon but they had a sticky film in them so sometimes two would stick together. I don’t remember if these came from Kroger. One of my chores as a young kid was to burn our paper trash in the “burning barrel” in the back yard. Later we had trash pick up weekly, no recycling. There was a deposit on soda bottles and cans, so we did take those back to the store to get our deposit back, and those were recycled.

Loved them as a kid. They even had different designs and themes. Y’all really need to stop with the plastic cups though. Microplastics in you and 20-500 years for each cup to break down in the landfill. I started saving plastics for recycling a few years ago and it’s shocking just how much a household generates in plastic waste each month.

What do you suggest for the bathroom for people who do not want to do the cup the hands? Ceramic or glass can break and a lot of people are barefoot or only in socks in the bathroom. Paper cups use natural resources of trees. What are your suggestions?

I don’t think most people use cups when brushing teeth. After brushing, run water on the toothbrush and brush with just water a few times to rinse the excess toothpaste out of your mouth. It works much better and no mess or germy cup to worry about

We never had them because my mom was super environmentally conscious, even before it was a thing. My sandwiches came wrapped in wax paper instead of a baggie, and she always used cloth diapers instead of disposable. I have memories of going with her to the recycling center and separating the brown from the green glass, and her yelling at me for throwing the bottles in rather than gently dropping them.

Both of my grandmothers had them, and all us kids LOVED them. The cups were thin plastic and matched the bathroom decor color. One grandma had a wall mounted dispenser, and we thought it was the epitome of awesome. I try to avoid spending money on future trash when I can. If I'm buying something that ends up in the trash, I don't need it. (Exceptions are things like dental floss) I phased stuff like this out when I was under the poverty line. I just never went back to using stuff like this. Besides saving money it also saves the environment to not use them. I however do have dispensers because I don't wish to "trash" then they're not recycleble - and I keep trying to think of ideas to repurpose them. Lol

I’m from a huge family, we used Dixie cups for everything. My mom said it was the only way to keep kids from passing germs from one kid to another. They were already falling out of style in the 80s because they weren’t really recyclable but she felt the trade off was worth it.

I never stopped using them. My grocery store sells the cups, a different brand though. I've seen Dixie brand ones in different places. Use them every day. Honestly what else do you use to rinse when brushing your teeth? And if people have a glass or other non disposable cup, you should be washing & sanitizing that EVERY DAY or the germs and bacteria will get you! Gross!

We did... for a while. We got rid of them after I decided to use one and then flush it down the toilet. Not sure why I did that; on that I was a kid and kids do stupid things sometimes. I was there when the plumber pulled it out and my mom and he both looked at me in one of those slow-motion head pivots when the realization both hit them. That dispenser was removed soon after.

I wanted paper cups in my bathroom like what my family had when I was growing up. I had to buy a 5 ounce wall dispenser through ebay. THEN my local Kroger and Walmart stopped selling 5 ounce cups. So once a month ortho I have to buy vintage 5 ounce cups on ebay. When I found a second dispenser at a thrift store, I installed it in the kitchen for quick water drinks. I don't know why they're not sold new.

For a nominal entry fee, I will grant you admittance to each of our three bathrooms, where upon you can gaze at our Dixie cupholders. Your membership in the Dixie cup holder museum is automatically renewable, and for an added fee, you may take a cup from the dispenser, turn on the faucet, and fill it up. ONCE. They make the cups in 3 ounce and 5 ounce sizes, and most of the holders will accommodate either size. I don't like "paper" cups, so we buy the translucent, plastic ones from Walmart. I know, I know, using plastic is bad for the environment, but… DIXIE CUPS! You'll find the 3 ounce version in our bathrooms, and there's a holder with the 5 – ounce cups on the counter next to the fridge with its watered dispenser in my kitchen. Those don't get used as often as they did when all of our kids still live at home, but my husband and I do, still, grab one and get some water out of the dispenser on the front of the fridge for a quick drink.

The last time I bought those I was making Jell-O shots for a party. I used the leftovers for my daughter’s paints. Never cared much for them in the bathroom. Seemed useless. You aren’t supposed to rinse after brushing your teeth. Mouthwash I just pour into my mouth without touching the bottle, and I mean, I only share the bottle with my husband anyway, so ehh. We share fluids quite often, so I’m not exactly worried his germs. I just don’t get the purpose of them. Maybe if you have a large family and need them for mouthwash?

When we were kids, Mom made us use the Dixie cups in the bathroom. Then she didn't have to get up or stop what she was doing every 10 minutes to get us drinks of water, lol. They were convenient and, for a long time, they were paper. But I also remember plastic ones. It was the plastic ones I saw in the garbage in the bathroom that made Mom think it was a waste to be throwing those out. There were three of us so we started keeping them in "our spot" on the vanity each day.

SAME. Plus we could only have nasty-ass crest toothpaste bc it was approved by the ADA. My siblings were indifferent to the taste but to me it tasted like powdered comet with some type of flavor mixed in that was mint or spearmint adjacent but absolutely wasn’t. I made sure mom knew I hated this toothpaste on the reg. When I moved out I was so proud to buy the toothpaste I liked. It was then I found out that MY toothpaste also had ADA approval and “confronted” my mom with proof (the box!) Her position was that crest was the first to obtain this designation, so it had to be the best…my dad and I just looked at each other like we were punked. It was then I realized how marketing really does work on malleable folks. Ps I also never used the cups - just put my mouth to the spigot like the heathen I was. my theory was the cups produced more trash and more trash meant more chores and I was all about not getting sucked into having to empty all the garbage in the entire house bc one bag in a bathroom was full. Now I don’t even rinse with water bc apparently the fluoride needs to stay on the teef. Ion know anymore 😩

Along the way, many people stopped drinking tap water. Bottled, or at least filtered, even in places with decent water. Water at my house is not great. But the city is doing a bunch of work to improve it right now. Looking forward to that. Water in my parents house was from a well, and remains the best Water I have ever tasted. We lived in a housing project in Laguna Hills, a very fancy place. So the neighborhood was safe, but going to school with a bunch of rich kids could be tough. Later we moved to Long Beach, CA. A much tougher area. But that's now what I think of as my home.

They didn’t hold much water. Even as a kid I had to refill it multiple times. Also, we are much more mindful about waste: both paper waste and money wasted.

Yeah, nothing wrong with a glass you wash regularly. My silent gen grandparents were all about conservation and frugality having lived through the great depression. Inherited more of their behavior than my parents waste and shows of decadence to bolster the ego. Growing up the Dixie cups in friends houses signaled wealth to me to afford disposable cups, rather than reusable ones.

We used them for Listerine!!! My mom was afraid we would use too much and apparently it was expensive, so she marked one cup that we would have to compare our cup to when we poured it out 🤣🤣 Frugal & smart!

My sister and I still say we grew up dirt poor. Mostly because our mom would send us to our grandparents in Mexico for summers & they would take us to the family ranch. ‘Family ranch’ should’ve been the first clue, but the fact that they had livestock, no running water or electricity…to us it meant we were poor. Never mind the maid, the ranch hands or the cooks 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I could be nuts but I feel like when water became a sought after beverage and not just the available option (around when bottled water or water bottles became more frequently used) the Dixie cups sorta went by the wayside.

My mom worked for Dixie! We had the dispensers and cups in our bathrooms. It was a very small 2 bedroom apartment but we were lucky enough to have our own bathrooms. Otherwise we wouldn't have been able to afford them. Eventually after a few more moves and a job change we did without the dispenser. We did have the cups for a while.

I still have them in my bathroom. The dispenser is Dixie Cup brand, but I can’t find actual Dixie Cups anymore and have store brand. Dixie Cups and orange juice NOT from concentrate are two of my childhood dreams cone true…

They still exist! We had them for our kids a few years ago, with the pop-up thing and everything. Didn't have them as a kid myself because my parents couldn't afford such "frivolity", but I splurged and bought them before realizing how wasteful it actually is. 😕
