What’s a car modification that instantly makes you think the owner has no idea what they’re doing?

We’ve all seen them, the fake vents, the ridiculously big wings on a FWD grocery getter, the giant “Type R” sticker on a completely stock Civic, or those spinning hubcaps that look like they’re about to fly off.

Pops and bangs tune
Mental-Philosophy3@reddit (OP)
If it comes with a good engine to match the sound then I’m cool with it but there’s no need having 4 plug engine with a pops and bangs tune
Senappi@reddit
That's pretty ignorant considering most rally cars around here are 4 cylinder and they often pop and bang due to the tune. Those cars are tuned for performance and reliability, not for grabbing attention in town or at a car meet
Mental-Philosophy3@reddit (OP)
I agree

Came here to say this one. Also the over-exaggerated exhaust pipe/tip, like 6”-10”, couple that with hood stacks or truck stacks.
And I’ll say to take your dually and put bigger wheels/tires on so they stick out like 6’ from the dually fender.
PublicDragonfruit158@reddit
And the ones that actually take them off road regret it. On a big tyre with plenty of meat to it, the rubber absorbs most of the shock.
Low porfiles....not so much. The rims tend to crack or break entirely.
Munster19@reddit
Teslas found out the hard way that they can't even drive on shitty roads, let alone off roading. Super low profile tires hitting a pothole = blown tire and/or cracked rim.
Like I get it, they're more energy efficient to spin, but there's a reason most tires are beefier.
Akward_Object@reddit
Actually they are less efficient because they are heavier. Smaller rim and tire with more sidewall is better in everything on public roads. It's only on the racetrack that the stiffer& smaller sidewall brings any advantage. It's a looks thing, because there are apparently people who think it looks better (I am not one of them).

Low profile off road tires are the exception to that. I thought it was just someone playing with photoshop until I saw them in real life, and I hate them even more.

Throttle body spacers and air intakes. These do absolutely nothing, if you want an intake for the sound, that perfectly fine. Otherwise don't expect your car to perform any different. Your engine will only take in so much air, there's a reason boost exists.

A cone air filter stuck on the end of an intake hose just sucking in hot engine bay air.
Most stock airboxes flow more than enough air to keep your engine breathing well past the power levels you're achieving naturally aspirated. Many flow well enough to not become a restriction until well north of 500hp.
In many instances, even well-designed aftermarket intakes have shown to actually reduce power under the curve. So yeah, you may pick up 10hp at the top of the rev range, you're losing it where it counts.
Seriously, people got paid a shitload of money to design the air filter housing in your car to optimize airflow into your engine.
FrankCostanzaJr@reddit
i get what you're saying, but sometimes its worth actually HEARING the intake, vs the car being super quiet and stock sounding. like there are PLENTY of cars where you could take off the stock intake plumbing...just to open up the filter from behind sound deadening. sure, maybe SOMETIMES you're giving up 1 or 2 hp, but the car SOUNDS fuckin awesome. I'd give up those 1-2..maybe even 5 hp just to hear my engine better cuz i appreciate the sound of it. it doesn't Always have to just 100% be about winning a race. it's fun to just drive the car around and enjoy the sounds and drive fast. like....not everybody is gonna be driving around every day with racing slicks and a helmet. every day is not a race. your car doesn't have to be a race car every day.
Jerkeyjoe@reddit
Most people simply don’t get this
0peRightBehindYa@reddit
Most of em have plastic silencer cones and chambers that can be removed or blocked off if you're looking for the intake noise. I did that with my 95 Taurus SHO (also added a 73mm MAF) and it was obscenely loud when the secondaries opened.
PurpLe_X1@reddit
That's why you also need to install a heat shield to prevent sucking in hot air. Which comes with the intake kit anyway.
Gobbyer@reddit
I blame video games, because cone air filter is usually the first and chespest thing you can buy to get more POWER!
But seriously, I bet people get them for the sound they make IF they research about them at all.
OlYeller01@reddit
People got paid a shitload of money to design the stock airbox within the manufacturer’s constrictions of packaging, emissions, NVH, and especially, cost. Aftermarket intakes don’t have those restrictions.
While heat soak and “hot engine air” can in fact kill some power, most aftermarket air intakes still draw in outside air from the stock air intake location. Thus the above concerns are truly only concerns in heavy traffic or perhaps while hot lapping at a drag strip.
Besides, anything that can smooth airflow into the engine will increase power even though the gains may be minimal; if that wasn’t the case, the mighty salad bowl wouldn’t increase carbureted horsepower on the dyno.
0peRightBehindYa@reddit
Go check out dyno results from independent testing in YouTube and get back with me.
OlYeller01@reddit
Literally the very first thing that pulled up was from @StreetSpeed717 installing a CAI on a brand new at the time Silverado. They did 3 pulls stock and made around 297, then literally installed the CAI on the dyno. With the CAI it made 311 to 321.
I’m sure we could both find plenty of YouTube videos supporting our opposing positions if we looked hard enough.
Look, I realize that yes, there are probably some cars where you install a CAI and sacrifice low end for peak; that can happen with any intake mod. I also realize that some cars (like S650 Mustangs) don’t really benefit without a matching tune yada yada. CAIs were probably more beneficial to late ‘90s/early ‘00s cars than they are today. But the physics of smoothing airflow into an engine never change, even if there’s not necessarily a restriction with the stock intake. Again: salad bowl.
inaccurateTempedesc@reddit
But I want induction noise
Josey_whalez@reddit
People with turbo cars still do it, even after explaining to them that it will cost you power, because they like to hear the turbo spool noise more when they floor it.
0peRightBehindYa@reddit
Yeah, I mentioned naturally aspirated. But even in boosted applications, unless you're cranking up the boost, replacing the airbox isn't really gonna help. That money would best be spent elsewhere.
pm-me-racecars@reddit
I replaced the airbox on my car.
The stock one was on top of the engine, and I broke tha mounts super easily trying to drive fast on dirt. The bouncing from the airbox caused it to break a coil pack. The aftermarket one sits behind the engine where it's unlikely to break other parts.
0peRightBehindYa@reddit
Okay, but that's a completely different thing. Replacing parts due to factory installed failure points, even if it results in a reduction in power (though that's exceedingly rare), is a smart move.
2fast4usky@reddit
yeah but a stock intake box wont fit the 4 inch inlet of my turbo lol
Sudden-Pangolin6445@reddit
I mean, happy turbo noises do release endorphins.
If I'm honest, I have a K&N kit that includes rudimentary heat shielding and tube because I like the growl that's not obnoxious and never needing to buy an air filter. My truck has enough ponies. I just want a little growl, not a full exhaust drone.
Opening-Ad8300@reddit
Yeah, I mean depending on the person sound/style is more important than a 10hp in the low end.

No, in fact most vents on modern vehicles are not actual vents. It’s been like that for a while.
Unless it’s modified to be something like for example a ram air intake (which was on a few muscle cars back in the day), or airflow for heat management.
It’s also worth noting that many manufacturers put these on from factory, so it’s not always the driver putting it on themselves.

Had to replace the whole tranny. We worked at a dealer as techs, so both did these jobs themselves, but the latter still cost $900 for a used transmission.
I asked them why they do this to themselves. Their responses: "But it looks cool tho"
