What's a car that is 100% driven by the most timid, like stop at yellow light drivers?

Minivans
Cookenbauer@reddit
Minivans are driven with a Momma protecting her infants. They are also driven with punk ass kids in the back that didnt get their bag packed after told 50 times and are late to soccer practice
doesnotexist2@reddit
Yet 90% of the time I’m in traffic behind one going slow, there’s no kids???
Cookenbauer@reddit
Probably maximizing their peace and quiet time and delaying the inevitable chaos awaiting
doesnotexist2@reddit
Then go sit in a parking lot. You don’t need to cause trouble for everyone else.

Preaching to the choir my friend.
Oldjamesdean@reddit
There are 2 types of minivan drivers, timid and completely insane.
sahara654@reddit
Not gonna lie, I drive a minivan and I have places to be, lol. Got a V6 under the hood and I will use every ounce of horsepower I have available.
Comfortable-Study-69@reddit
I think it has to do with 3 wildly different groups that drive minivans: one group is new parents, on the opposite end there’s kids that just inherited their mom’s 15-year-old Sienna that shares a powertrain with the ES350, and then there’s crackheads living out of their cars. The former drives like they have 3 kids in the car (because they do) and the latter two have weirdly fast vehicles and don’t quite understand that death exists.
StudSnoo@reddit
Right. For example a 2018 sienna has 296 horsepower, and is quicker than pretty much every soccer mom crossover, and sedan on the market.
Cow_Man32@reddit
Seriously, yesterday I was driving up highway 285 and then down deckers rd in Colorado (super curvy mountain road) and this Chrysler minivan was going like 60+ through the turns, I was drifting and banging gears just to try and keep up and eventually just gave up and went like 35-40 cause I didn't want to completely wear out my tires
robgee23@reddit
Agree a 100%. Just encountered an insane this afternoon.somehow most crazy drivers i encounter on road are in either an Odyssey and a Sienna.
idownvoteanimalpics@reddit
I have a Honda j in my minivan...in prefer to go nuts
naterpotater246@reddit
I swear, it's always minivan drivers. They're always either competing for the reputation of the nissan altima, or driving like they have a bucket of water in the passenger seat, and there's no in-between.

Cars that have the words "student driver" written on them
Harrymcmarry@reddit
I have a theory on this. I seriously think people that have "student driver" plastered all over the back of the car just do that so that they don't get honked at. Where I live has an unusually large percentage of cars with student driver decals on them, and I have a very hard time believing that everyone is a student driver, especially after pulling up next to middle-aged people behind the wheel more so than teenagers learning to drive.
Disclaimer - this is rooted purely in my own empirical observations and nothing more.
AudieCowboy@reddit
I still honk at them, helps them learn better if other people are telling them they're doing it wrong too
Xyzzydude@reddit
You see this in communities with a lot of immigrants, especially from India. These are people who either didn’t drive or had drivers in their home country.
TheCouncilOfPete@reddit
Most "student driver" stickers actually mean "this car may be driven by my underage child". People never use things correctly.
Drunktraveler99@reddit
They are very common by me too, makes me laugh how many are faded and peeling. How long you gonna be a student driver?
Mr_MacGrubber@reddit
Never stop learning
Mr_MacGrubber@reddit
A lot of people put them on their vehicle when their kid has a learners permit only or just got licensed.
Stock-Lobster-303@reddit
I was more referring to the cars that are used by driving schools and instructors that also have that thing on the top of them like a taxi
mckenzie_keith@reddit
I have the same theory with the same caveats. I see an awful lot of cars with "student driver" stickers on them being driven in an overly cautious fashion with only one person in the car.
Xdaveyy1775@reddit
I routinely get stuck behind one of these in my neighborhood at 5am with no one on the road. We must have the same commute to work time. 10 -15mph on a regular 30mph suburban side road.

Tesla owners as a whole, not any one particular model.
Equivalent_Thievery@reddit
My experience is that they're either the new iteration of a prius driver or an absolute road hazard out there being overly agressive, little inbetween.
edwbuck@reddit
If you think Tesla owners are the newer Prius owners, then you just define the group by "they're the newer group of people I stereotype and hate." Hybrid and electric ownership are not the same, nor are the assurances that Toyota gives in build quality (which is very good, even if diminishing) and those of Tesla (which were never existent).
The only commonality is the appeal to use less gas, but if I offered you 10 more MPH, you'd take it too, so that's a universal (among non-AH people) appeal.
Equivalent_Thievery@reddit
Weird leaps.
A lot of prius owners are hypermilers, some tesla owners behave similarly because battery range is limited.
Calm down.
PuzzledEnergy4426@reddit
In my experience Tesla drivers are extremely reckless.
CDsDontBurn@reddit
I agree with you, on occasion. And typically the Model 3 owner fits the bill.
But on an overall scheme, no. Tesla owners are left lane camping, stop at yellow light, put on the blinker to make a lane change and don't because the 6 car lengths of space is "too tight of a space" and abort their lane change mid lane change.
zenFyre1@reddit
Yep, as soon as I see one in the rear view mirror, I can expect it to be riding my ass within a few seconds.

Subaru. I’ve seen them actively slow down approaching green lights to see if it might turn yellow for them to stop…
tads73@reddit (OP)
Exactly
mostlygray@reddit
I drive a complete POS Dodge Caravan from 2007. I stop at yellow lights and never break the law. I often drive slightly under the speed limit. I obey all traffic controls.
If you see me, I'm stopping on the yellow if I can. I am often mocked for my driving.
The thing is, I used to drive very fast. Right on the ragged edge of control. I'm talking 125 miles in 75 minutes fast on the twisties on back roads on snowy roads. That's 75 mph average with 50 miles of that not safe to drive over 40 so you really have to make it up on the straights.
But I was a kid and was unsafe in all respects. 26 years later, I slowed down and now I drive like a grandma going to church. It works for me and I don't care.
I would like to drive fast again though. Hitting 105 on the straights was fun. 105 on the straight, hard brake for the chicane at 20, then full throttle, hard brake for the next at 30, then flat out again for half a mile, hard break to 15 hold, and then catch the next straight and the flat out again. I miss driving like that so much.
But it's not for me any more. But give me $5 and the promise of a good chocolate malt, and I'll do it again. I just need a good car with a 5 speed and a stretch of road that's full of twisties.
tads73@reddit (OP)
That's black and white thinking. You don't understand there are safe in-between points. Because 75 in a 55 isnt safe, 40 in a 55 isn't safer.
Time_Many6155@reddit

Firm_Mycologist9319@reddit

Prius
Mr-Zappy@reddit
Prius drivers drive slow (partly because they’re slo and partly because driving them slower improves efficiency), but choosing not to go through a yellow doesn’t really help that.
switchblade_sal@reddit
Prius quicker than it typically gets credit for, it’s actually fairly nimble but doesn’t feel like it drives well at high speeds.
The new Prius is a completely different story. There are a couple different versions of the 2026 but the baseline 2026 Prius is awd and has 196 hp. The “Plug in hybrid” variant has 220 hp and a 0-60 or 6.9 seconds.
It also looks way sportier.
2026 PHV Prius
HoldingThunder@reddit
A new Prius has a 0-60 in 6.4 seconds. That would about be on par with a 1970 boss 302 mustang.
DistrictObjective680@reddit
Wow a car is faster than another car that is 50+ years old?
HoldingThunder@reddit
The point isn't that it's faster, it's that it is mechanically capable to adequate speeds. It's the drivers that are slow, not the cars
WizeAdz@reddit
Back when we had our 2004 Prius, the thing was as fast as any 4-cylinder car.
But the engine was tuned so that WOT sounded like you were stepping on a kitten.
The car had plenty of power, but I figured that one of the dozens of fuel-efficiency features that are baked into the car was this way of discouraging the driver from using all of that power unless it’s truly necessary. That thing used every trick in the book to maximize the utility extracted from a gallon of gasoline, so I don’t see why tuning the NVH would be any different.
I drive an EV now and jackrabbit starts are par for the course. The car doesn’t complain about it, so a little distance between me and the slow traffic feels like a good thing. Those hints matter!
edwbuck@reddit
The Prius gives live gas consumption details. It features as prominently as the speedometer.
So you really start to understand that the harder you accelerate, the less miles you get from your tank. But everyone has to accelerate from a stop. So there's the electric drive for that, and it is also incredibly clear about how little electric "assist" is available.
Hybrid cars are wonderful because they give you the electric assist right when you need it the most, when you're accelerating the most and your gas mileage is the least. If gas cars could avoid the first second of acceleration, I'd imagine that their MPG would jump by 10 MPG.
HoldingThunder@reddit
That's really not the problem. Because Prius drivers are oblivious to everything and are bad for more ways than just driving slow.
Driving is a skill. People who enjoy cars appreciate that driving is a skill and look to improve. People who don't, just try to get from point A to B and not crash and that's a win. Noone who enjoys cars or appreciates the skill of driving or enjoyment of driving will ever drive a Prius, because they are lifeless cars. So the entire population of people who buy them or similar cars don't can't about the intricacies of driving or trying to get better - so they don't.
edwbuck@reddit
Sorry, but you lost me there. I know full and well how to preload my suspension to get an extra ten seconds on a lap time at a raceway. If you give me a crew and a budge, I can even wedge and weight the car to give me more.
I drove a Prius. Much of the hate for people that drive them is just typical (not even interesting) driving hatred, directed to the most popular car model for years, probably due to a combination of factors (car shape, GM fostering of non-American car hate, it's not burning gas so they're not supporting the economy, etc.)
How do we know this? People still hate the Prius, long after all the Prius drivers switched over to Toyota Corolla Hybrid drivers.
MaleficentExtent1777@reddit
They LOVE to hypermile in the left lane. 😞
el-art-seam@reddit

TesticleMeElmo@reddit
“What’s the rush? I’m certainly going to make it through this green arrow”
markmakesfun@reddit
Any car driven more slowly improves gas mileage. It is absolutely nothing to do with it being a Prius. Prius drivers don’t drive “extra slowly” to save gas. Prius’s already get 2To three times the mileage of trucks and SUV’s. There is no case where a truck or suv gets better mileage than a Prius. That’s a wives tale.
CuriousDude493@reddit
People who drives Prius are more conscious about gas mileage and the environment. The car already has good gas mileage is why they bought them, not so that they can drive aggressive and be ok with it. They can still maximize what they already have.
Willing-Cucumber-595@reddit
Not all owners of Prii are that way. I had a gen2 prius for over 10 years and drove it no different than I drove any of my other cars (like a maniac), including manual trans hot hatches. There is a theory of prius enlightenment somewhere online that noted levels of:
Watching the power display to try and keep it charging the battery as much as possible
The hypermiling state wherein one becomes enjoined with the accelerator pedal to maximize MPGs
The state where one just treats it like any other car and drives without concerning themselves with MPGs or any other contrived ideals.
Still wish I had that car back, was still great with nearly 200,000 miles... Stupid Jeep Cherokee, driven by a mechanic on a 'test drive' tried to zoom through a yellow on a left turn. Both cars totaled but the Prius stayed rubber side down, Jeep did Jeep things and ended up like an upside down turtle, rolling into a Kia on its way over...
el-art-seam@reddit
I wonder what will happen if gas hits $8 regular. Will we all drive slow? I don’t think so. I think we’ll drive even faster and be even more angry that we’re spending so much on gas passing the slow moron.

Prius drivers in a nutshell
IWillEvadeReddit@reddit
Honestly I think it’s cause it’s the most popular rideshare/ delvery driver vehicle, most of these dudes are distracted by the apps so they’ll stop at a yellow to decide if they wanna accept or decline orders.
edwbuck@reddit
I think it's because it was the first car with an Eco agenda, and it looked really different.
People used to ask me if I was worried that all that "new / modern" technology would fail me. Keep in mind I was driving a 3rd gen Prius, 20 years after the first Prius (which didn't ship to the USA) was built.
I learned, by driving the Prius, that whipping around the car in front of me really wasn't going to get me there 10 minutes earlier, on a 45 minute drive; but, it would make my MPG drop from 50 to 39. So I stared just sitting in my lane, and maybe doing 3 lane changes on the freeway every 15 miles, instead of 3 per mile. People would get all aggressive and angry I was driving slow, but their behavior could not be explained because to drive faster, I'd have to ram the car in front of me.
It sort of is the default car to hate on, but it's a great car.
Individual-Stand1560@reddit

Yellow means stop, if safe
reidft@reddit
Nah in current year yellow means green and red also means green
Eagle_1776@reddit
around here, apparently red means MORE green
reidft@reddit
Hell even stop signs are a soft suggestion now. There's one near my work that people will blow through full speed, and it's obvious one's there. They'll go around stopped people or filter through to run it.
Bedbouncer@reddit
In MI you can get ticketed for driving through a yellow. Got pulled over for that once. Turned red after I'd passed it going the speed limit.

My neighbor in the last apartment complex I lived in was in her 80s, and she drove a 90s gold standard transmission Camry. I could always hear her riding the clutch through the parking lot. She could not turn her neck enough to look behind her when reversing, but luckily you could hear her grinding into reverse as a warning to get out of the way. She always parked at least a foot over the line. I hope she’s doing well, and that her license has been revoked.

My God you're right. Almost guaranteed to be going 25 under the limit and switching lanes at snails pace

I knew I’d find it on here. Yes. Never gets a speck of dirt or mud on the custom bronze rims and olive paint job even in the dirt/gravel parking lot of the office building at the end of the 1.7 mile commute to work for the accountant who pays to have someone else do all the work on it and never takes it off city streets to have any fun with it.

PurpleSausage77@reddit
Anything with regen braking. I typically scan traffic lights and can time them all perfectly but with yellow lights I tend play it more safe if I drive a hybrid/EV, the energy added back to the car so no total loss there. With gas I’d want to make it through and make as few stops as possible.
Just when it comes to boring A-B driving I prefer driving with efficiency. Why race just to gain 1-2 car lengths in regular ass traffic lol.
Double_Tap_That_Ass@reddit
Because for some of us, our time is valuable. When would you ever not race?

It’s Rav 4 and they start breaking while the lights still green because the cross walk countdown is at 3.
twoiseight@reddit
I suspect some selection bias at play here since RAV4s are among the top selling mid-sized suvs. It seems like more questionable driving comes from them because there are so many of them in general.

Mitsubishi Mirage and similar subcompacts with glorified lawnmower engines. They aren't plentiful luckily and the limitation is definitely mechanical regardless of skill but if you've ever been stuck behind one, you probably know.

I'm one of those sometimes, so whatever car I'm driving. Which is Honda Accord at the moment. I was in a wreck in the late 90's where I hesitated when the light turned yellow and decided to gun it through. The person I t-boned saw me hesitate and went, but it didn't turn red while going through so it wasn't my fault. But I always felt guilty for that, especially since the guy was so nice about it. So I have a natural impulse now sometimes and I hate it.

Rav4 is the ultimate example of this. Every person I know who is either literally afraid of driving or only drives because they have to, they all buy a Rav4. They are the absolute most timid drivers on the road.
I think they’re attracted to it being the most boring and basic baseline new car for sale. They think “I want cheap, new, reliable, and suv because only suv = safety.”
The people who drive RAV4s are the same people who think I am going to actually roll my BMW by taking a corner a bit too briskly.
I say this as someone with no less than 4 people in my life who fit this profile to a t.
fuck_peeps_not_sheep@reddit
Depends on where you live but here in the uk its not often a car but a type of driver (and anyone with a black box fitted)
Most cars that are popular here are driven by a wide range of people, our last car was a Renault clio, these cars are nutritious for yobs driving them like a bat out of hell through council estates, but they are also a popular cheap family car, and lots of the elderly drive them because they are relatively small and easy to pop to the shops and back in. Same with cars like the vw golf and the ford fiesta, you could see two on the road side by side at some traffic lights and one will take off screaming and the other will take off like theres a pan of soup on each seat that must not spill.
