What are the less obvious things in someone's upbringing or background that can limit their opportunities later in life?

Self esteem and emotional regulation is often learned at home. Despite growing up poor, spending time in care and enduring lots of adverse childhood experiences my outcomes as an adult have been significantly better than most care experienced people. Despite her shortcomings my mum did manage to encourage us to get an education and did instil a great sense of self esteem in us amongst other things. It’s hard to explain but that’s definitely something kind of unquantifiable that makes a big difference.

Which store’s shopping bags are least likely to be targeted by thieves?

Doubt they go out to target shopping bags when phones are so easy to snatch. Doesn’t matter what the bag says on it, nothing to say that’s what’s being carried. My grandpa used to carry cash around in a Farmfoods bag.

Do you think mortgages are predatory, if so what is the alternative?

Posted by AvailableCricket3633@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 42 comments

iffyClyro@reddit

Nope. Mortgages democratise home ownership. Lenders should be pushed to lend 95% LTV again. I’m in a position where I started with nothing and now have a £300k with a 50% mortgage and a good sum of money saved. All because I was able to borrow 95% on a £60k purchase. Yeah the flat was utterly dreadful and in a dreadful part of town but under no circumstances would I ever have had the £57k I needed to buy the place if it wasn’t for a mortgage.

Yes, social media and podcasts have replaced print media as most people’s source of “news”. Unless you’re in the older demographic.

If your local shopping centre has anything like craft trader stall day then there is likely someone selling 3D printed axolotls and probably magnets.

If somebody is acquitted of GBH on the grounds of self-defence, but the victim later dies, does the accused have to be retried?

Posted by yourforestlass@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 11 comments

iffyClyro@reddit

There’s no such thing as GBH in Scotland however there are some similar/equivalent offences and I can say with a fair degree of certainty the answer would be no. If the defence of self defence is accepted then that’s it.
