Is £30 compensation reasonable for finding an exposed blade and mould in product box from John Lewis?

Unless you're going to be handing the controls of the AC unit to your baby, I don't think it being for their nursery is particularly relevant. I'd be more bothered by the mould than the blade, to be honest. Why is it mouldy? Sort of implies that the AC unit might have already been used and returned.

I would guess the someone at the factory accidentally left the blade in the box, and the mould was caused by a damp patch. I think the £30 (in effect a £30 discount) is quite generous and would take it. The alternative is to return it for a refund which takes time and effect, which means the whole process of ordering and returning the air con is a complete waste of time and money.

I mean, it's that or ask for a refund? If you turn down the £30 and wanna keep the unit, they may offer you a bit more, or they may just say "thanks bye!" then your recourse is pretty much never shopping with them again and blowing up social media to try and harm their rep. It's up to you really, if you've got new kids do you really wanna be wasting a load of time arguing with John Lewis? It doesn't seem like you're actually any worse off after this whole thing. If it's any consolation, that's not a "shank" it's a pretty standard warehouse box cutter. Probably just got forgot when someone was packing the unit.

That doesn't look like a standard warehouse box cutter that the company would issue - you wouldn't have an exposed blade that long. Usually it'd be some auto retracting knife. However warehouse operatives are very creative and will often make their own more efficient but more dangerous knives. Did a few knife audits for h&s in warehouses and the amount of homemade knives I found was a bit shocking

Better than nothing. I bought a pack of spoons from JL, ate my cereal with one and sliced two perfect cuts on my upper lip. The edges of the spoons were razor sharp. I got £100. Could have kicked up more of a fuss but 100 quid is 100 quid.

Yes. Let's not try to make the UK the same litigious nation as the US, where people look at every thing like it could be a 6 or 7 digit payday. Unless you actually got hurt, make them aware, take the offer, and move on.

It sounds more than reasonable to me. You haven’t actually suffered at all? You aren’t out of pocket. Take your free money, free knife and move on with your life.

I think they should return the mould though, someone might need that.

I think 30 is about right, no-one actually got hurt, you the product you have works fine, just don’t buy anything from them again

Were you injured? Have you suffered a loss? If not they don’t really owe you anything. Either return it or accept the offer.
