What flavours do you hate, but you like the real thing?

I love cherries, but hate cherry flavoured stuff.
It's the same with bananas. I'll eat a banana, but can't stand a banana flavoured milk shake.
Am I alone?
Rik_Whitaker@reddit
Bananas. Love banana flavoured stuff but I hate bananas
Forward-Fan2680@reddit
Love milk. Hate milk shake.
Love salted peanuts, and peanut butter. Don’t like anything else that has nuts in it.
Like ketchup. Hate tomatos
red_Rog@reddit
Haha, I'm the opposite. I love cherry-flavoured anything, but don't particularly love cherries themselves.
fuckinyaldi@reddit
Love bananas hate banana flavoured everything. Love all things strawberry flavour but don't like actual strawberries.
Vequihellin@reddit
I'm kind of the opposite tbh. Blackcurrant in particular is one that springs to mind. I like Ribena but dislike blackcurrants in basically anything. I also quite like raspberry flavoured stuff but I'm not fussed on raspberries.
Apple is one I prefer the real thing in though. Apple flavour anything never tastes right and it always has a weird metallic quality. Chocolate flavour stuff is always gross too - chocolate milkshake powders always taste weird compared to proper chocolate (We're brits so our chocolate doesn't have the vomit compound butyric acid in it, so proper chocolate always tastes better than chocolate flavoured anything).
quentinia@reddit
Watermelon.
Watermelon flavoured stuff always tastes weirdly chemical.
Watermelon itself is refreshing and a mouthful of summer.
ShortShortStori@reddit
I love peanuts but hate peanut butter / peanut flavoured anything.
rabidrob42@reddit
Cheese and onion crisps, I love everything else cheese and onion flavour, but despise the crisps.
iffyClyro@reddit
The flavours are often based on artificial compound devised decades ago when things actually tasted different.
Electric-aura3000@reddit
But why don't they just make a modern day banana flavour?
Zealousideal_Pop3121@reddit
Banana flavoured stuff is 🤮 I wonder if my hate for it is connected to kiddies amoxicillin which has a nasty banana flavour.
runrunrudolf@reddit
Ohhh I used to love amoxicillin
Electric-aura3000@reddit
Me too! They made it taste a bit too nice!
EepyPrincessKitten@reddit
Definitely Bananas. I absolutely HATE actual bananas , but love that fake banana milkshake flavour. Meanwhile Blackberries I love actual blackberries but hate the fake flavour

WATERMELON. Vapes… sweets. Nah.
ARobertNotABob@reddit
Coconut.
Manospondylus_gigas@reddit
I only have the reverse of this, I like artificial blueberry, raspberry, and strawberry flavours but I hate fruit
giantrubbersquid@reddit
Chocolate flavoured stuff, watermelon flavoured stuff
Timely-Trick8467@reddit
Smoked bacon/ bacon. I love the real stuff cannot stomach anything flavoured bacon.
The__Pope_@reddit
Same, it will be repeating on me all day if I have bacon crisps
MoleWhackSupreme@reddit
Strawberry.
Can’t get enough actual strawberries, but I find anything strawberry flavoured absolutely vile
Norman_Small_Esquire@reddit
I used to have a coffee van that we would take to festivals, among many other things we would sell real fruit milkshakes made with vanilla ice cream. Obviously strawberries can be a bit hit and miss with how flavourful they are, but we used to have to put strawberry syrup in for certain customers. They loved it.
Upstairs-Quail5709@reddit
🍓 chopped into four and marinaded in balsamic vinegar - it's the future
Proper_North_5382@reddit
Same! I could never stand strawberry ice cream or anything strawberry flavoured but if you give me a tub of strawberries I'm all for it.
anabsentfriend@reddit
As a child I needed nose drops. They were awful. I was probably around five years old.
I was visiting an auntie's house and it was time for the drops. I remember becoming very upset about it.
The auntie was not someone I knew (dad's side after divorce). She said she had a lovely treat for me if I had my drops.
I was still crying but had the drops.
I awaited my treat. Auntie went into kitchen and brought up big bowl of strawberry Angel Delight.
I was inconsolable and had to be taken home.
This was 50 years ago. I still hate strawberry flavoured slop.
Dapper_Otters@reddit
Berry flavoured things in general.
Specialist-Prior-213@reddit
Berry flavour in general I'm usually down with, but specifically strawberry flavour that's a no go for me
mynameisjodie@reddit
I had morning sickness and ocuksbt eat strawberries haven't eaten one in 7 years but love strawberry milkshakes
JayR_97@reddit
Yep, I love strawberry's but I really don't like strawberry ice cream
Ok_Isopod9990@reddit
Even strawberry pencils? They don’t even taste like strawberries, they’re just .. good
JonnoFleming@reddit
Amen. Strawberry flavoured anything is just manky as!
AleonaLuts@reddit
And I have it in reverse, after Covid I started to like the flavouring itself, but the real thing is too sour for some reason. Not berries themselves, but when they get added to a yoghurt, for example 😅
TankFoster@reddit
I'm the other way round. 😄

Strawberry / banana, it's always a very fake flavour
CozJeez85@reddit
Bananas. I like the smell, the taste and the dried ones, but fresh normal banana is like eating mashed potato in a tube.
wroclad@reddit
Oddly, I dislike cherries but cherry flavour anything is my favourite.
funkyg73@reddit
Banana or coffee for me.
BananaHomunculus@reddit
I don't like most flavored things. So I'm gonna go with my most detested. Chocolate. Chocolate flavored stuff is absolutely disgusting.
Electrical-Tea6966@reddit

TheRegularBelt@reddit
Grape. Blegh.
feesh_face@reddit
Probably the least like the real thing too.
Mental_Body_5496@reddit
Americans - its based on the concord grape i think not a European green grape - they commercialised grapes because commercial blackcurrents are/were banned !
The commercial cultivation of blackcurrants was banned federally in the United States in 1911 to protect the domestic timber industry. The plants were found to act as a host for white pine blister rust, a destructive fungus that threatened valuable white pine forests.
ThisIsMyRedditAcct20@reddit
I don’t get blackcurrant at all. Redcurrant maybe. Blackcurrant is just not my thing
-You_Cant_Stop_Me-@reddit
It's based on an American variety, not the European grapes we eat and make wine from.
ThisIsMyRedditAcct20@reddit
As a dual citizen, no it is not. It’s still the same swill and American grapes aren’t always M&S level, they aren’t rank.
duke_of_germany_5@reddit
Japanese grape flavoured stuff is even worse
Inkyyy98@reddit
My partner is giving up tobacco and he’s bought this dried herb mix called Dutch Mix to smoke as the theory behind it is to condition your brain into realising it’s not getting nicotine when you smoke it, so it helps with not wanting tobacco.
Well it’s artificial grape flavour and I cannot stand the smell of it. Bleh
iamsheena@reddit
On the other end of things, I hate watermelon but love "watermelon-flavoured" things (because it tastes nothing like watermelon).
Specialist-Web7854@reddit
Grape. Anything that’s supposed to be grape scented or grape flavour makes me gag. I once bought hair conditioner that turned out to be ‘grape’ scented and I had to bin it. Actual grapes have absolutely no similarity and are delicious.
TunedOutPlugDin@reddit
Crab. I don't like crabsticks but I do like real crab.
Status_Intention6832@reddit
At least where I’m from crab sticks aren’t actually made of crab.
antmakka@reddit
Crisps flavoured with onion. Pickled onion, cheese and onion, etc. Love them.
I hate real onions.
AirBiscuitBarrel@reddit
I love cheese and I love onions, but cheese and onion crisps make me want to hurl.
TheClnl@reddit
Anything cheese flavoured can get in the bin tbh but I adore cheese.
Double_Double7407@reddit
Coffee. Love coffee; hate coffee-flavoured *stuff*
Florence_Nightgerbil@reddit
Love coffee. Love an espresso martini. Love tiramisu. HATE coffee and walnut cake. HATE coffee creams.
Gatecrasher1234@reddit (OP)
Does that include tiramisu?
DinkyPrincess@reddit
Love coffee. Hate tiramisu.
Dad was an Italian chef. Yes I’ve had many good ones.
Double_Double7407@reddit
I don't mind tiramisu; but that's made with actual coffee anyway. Still not my favourite - coffee belongs in a cup
grey_canvas_@reddit
I mean ... Tiramisu is made with actual coffee.
Coffee flavored candy however tastes like sweaty remnants from the bottom of a long forgotten hand bag.
JayMak78@reddit
Oddly specific.
_FreddieLovesDelilah@reddit
Never realised but yeh you’re right.
iffyClyro@reddit
Tiramisu should be made with real coffee, not coffee flavouring.
Lickonmydick@reddit
for me, yes.
Zealousideal_Pop3121@reddit
I’m the opposite. Hate coffee to drink but love coffee ice cream, cake etc.
StardustOasis@reddit
I don't like coffee anything, except for beer.
Evening-Tomatillo-47@reddit
Coffee beer?
StardustOasis@reddit
Yeah, either beers that have coffee flavours from the malt bill, or beers that have been brewed with coffee. There are many coffee stouts and porters out there.
Peachk1n@reddit
I’m the same with cherry. No way on earth I’m drinking a cherry coke but I’ll demolish a bowl of cherries.
TheRancidOne@reddit
Chocolate. I lov ethe real thing but there's a particular chocolate flavouringused today, that goes all the way back to my childhood, which I find revolting.
doraisexploring27@reddit
I’m the opposite with bananas. I like banana milkshake/ice cream or bananas in a smoothie, but I hate the texture of actual bananas
360Saturn@reddit
I'm the opposite with watermelon! The flavour is refreshing but the melon itself is too sticky and messy!
benoirdo@reddit
Banana flavouring is what bananas used to taste like. The Gros Michel was the dominant commercial variety until it was virtually wiped out by disease. The dominant commercial bananas nowadays are less tasty but immune to the fungus that kills the old bananas. Banana flavouring was derived from the old-school bananas.
Fancy_Toe1451@reddit
Also many of us eat bananas when they are not ripe enough. To be ripe enough to be flavourful, the banana skin should be blemished and the banana starting to go squishy. Yellow, or yellow-green, overly firm bananas haven't hat the starches start to breakdown into sugar yet.
DrMoneybeard@reddit
I like them much better when they’re still starchy, with a bit of bite too the. Too sweet and mushy for me when they’re actually ripe. But then they go in the freezer for banana bread. Love that bananas are useful in every state!
benoirdo@reddit
Definitely. I dont eat my bananas until the skin starts to turn brown/black. 100% tastier. People who are eating green bananas need to give their head a wobble.
Forever-A@reddit
I’m the same with Raspberries
MasticatedBrain@reddit
There's no actual 'cherry' involved in any cherry flavouring - it's actually almond so thats what you don't like!
DNDJ-1208@reddit
Mint. Love it when fresh, can't stand After Eights and Mind drinks !!
But maybe we could argue that the flavoured items are only flavoured, maybe using anything but the item (mint here) and instead some chemicals ?
Standard_Bus3101@reddit
Chocolate
Individual_Ad_974@reddit
Fully agree with you about the cherries, love the fruit and can eat a load of them but hate anything cherry flavoured or the smell of fake cherries 🤮
BigRonWood@reddit
Coffee. I get through like 9 cups a day, but I can't stand coffee cake or anything that's not a cup of coffee tasting like coffee.
bluefox9er@reddit
Chocolate
Cheese-n-Opinion@reddit
Most chocolate flavoured stuff just uses the cocoa solids, and not the cocoa butter. A chocolate cake for example is usually just flavoured with cocoa powder.
I wouldn't say I hate it, but I definitely miss the depth and texture you get from the cocoa butter.
3507341C@reddit
Chocolate without a doubt. Even chocolate is now just chocolate flavoured fat. But I cannot stand; choc mousse, ice-cream, milkshake, cake, cheesecake or cookies.
flakylibra@reddit

mrafinch@reddit
Orange.
Orange squash is like vomit, but I’ll eat a whole net of oranges in one bite

WBB3-World@reddit
I love tomatoes, tomato soup, and tomato purée but can’t stand even the smell of ketchup, and fried tomatoes are a no go for me.
DinkyPrincess@reddit
I’m the same. Love cherries hate that synthetic cherry taste.
Same for coffee.
LazySilverSquid@reddit
Strawberries. I like the fruit themselves, especially as a jam or in a smoothie, but the artificial flavour just tastes wrong.
On the other hand though, I hate eating blueberries except when they're in something like muffins or cakes. Idk what it it, but the texture just doesn't work for me.
I've not had much with artificial blueberry flavour, so I don't know about that.
PengyLi@reddit
Same with banana flavouring. Hate it. Love a banana!
sarahlovesjourney@reddit
Almond. The essence or extract should be banned. My sister and brother agree. Perhaps it's genetic. Ground almonds in a cake are lovely though, as are stollen bites.
External-Praline-451@reddit
Me too, it's vile. My brother also agrees, so perhaps it's a genetic thing. I can't even do ground almonds to be fair, so stollen and almond cakes still taste gross to me and marzipan can get in the bin 🤮
But whole almonds are fine for some reason!
sarahlovesjourney@reddit
The ground almonds and small amounts of marzipan have only been in the last few years, before that I was in agreement.
isve99@reddit
almonds and almond milk is 👌🏼👌🏼 but almond essence/extract is disgusting 🤢
Smug010@reddit

I like most flavoured things but raspberry gives me a psychosomatic nausea reaction because I used to get terrible travel sickness as a child and used to take these tablets called Joy Rides before a long journey but they had a really strong artificial raspberry taste and now I can't stand it.
mentaldriver1581@reddit
Watermelon and pineapple flavoured anything. Especially the pineapple flavoured colonoscopy preparation.
denelibar@reddit
I'm with you on cherry and banana flavour, also almond flavour! Blackcurrant flavour tastes like washing up liquid 😂
ghoulquartz@reddit
Orange
amzlrr@reddit

I also love raspberry flavoured stuff but an actual raspberry makes me want to throw up
Upstairs-Quail5709@reddit
Nearly everything chocolate flavoured - cake, cereal, milk shake
Able_While_974@reddit
I'll make allowances for a really good, gooey chocolate cake. But all the rest, including chocolate ice cream and chocolate mousse are yuk.
Upstairs-Quail5709@reddit
Yes, to find such a cake using high quality ingredients is like finding an honest politician - a rarity!
Gloomy_Custard_3914@reddit

pandabearrose@reddit

jasobaka@reddit
Orange. I love oranges & especially orange juice, but hate anything orange flavoured. In a pack of sweets(skittles/fruit pastiles etc) I eat all except orange ones, they can literally go in a bin😹
spynie55@reddit
I'm the same. I think it's because 'orange flavoured' often means 'orange peel flavoured' - or at least that's what it tastes like to me.
jasobaka@reddit
You’re so right! Unnecessarily bitter
yourefunny@reddit
Some cherry sweets are lovely but loads are absolutely horrible. No idea what the manufacturers are doing. I'm guessing a lot of American influence on the shite stuff. The same with grape!
jami05pearson@reddit
Peach flavoring is gross, peaches are good.
Xenozip3371Alpha@reddit
Bananas are the only one I can think of.
Usually it's the other way around, I don't like strawberries, but I love strawberry flavour for instance.
Erivandi@reddit
Tomatoes. Tomato paste, puree and sauce are excellent and I love sun-dried tomatoes, but unprocessed tomatoes are disgusting. They have the worst texture. The skin is like plastic and the inside is thin and watery with a few seeds mixed in. It's like munching on a water balloon.
I also hate it when there's slices of tomato in a sandwich or on a pizza. I can't bite all the way through the plasticy skin so I end up pulling the tomato out of the sandwich along with half the other fillings and ruining the whole thing, or pulling the slice of tomato off the pizza and making a mess.

Erivandi@reddit
Yeah, it's a similar situation to banana. Both are mild flavours, so banana or watermelon flavoured stuff ends up having a flavour that's way too strong and doesn't taste right.
Queasy_Difference_96@reddit
Me too! Watermelon flavouring is absolutely disgusting 🤢
ImTheChastainNow@reddit

Most cherry flavoured stuff tastes of almonds !
Banana flavouring is based on what bananas used to taste like before the strain we mainly ate in the uk was wiped out - In the 1950s, a devastating outbreak of Panama Disease (Fusarium wilt) decimated the global commercial banana industry. Caused by the soil-borne fungus Fusarium oxysporum, this epidemic wiped out massive plantations of the dominant Gros Michel banana! The ones we mainly eat now are generally Cavendish!
MasticatedBrain@reddit
All cherry flavouring is actually almond that's why it tastes like it!
Mental_Body_5496@reddit
Sort of its because the original flavouring used the stones not just the pulp!
seawood1974@reddit

It's an acetate that's found in high quantities in all bananas, including in Cavendish bananas. It also occurs in other foods and in fermentation, hence wheat beers sometimes having a banana-y smell. Commercial banana flavouring comes from the processed byproducts of the brewing or fermentation industries.
Mental_Body_5496@reddit

That's because many artificial food flavourings only use a few different chemicals to provide the taste, whereas fresh food can have dozens or hundreds of different chemicals in different proportions that stimulate both your senses of taste and smell.
So the artificial ones taste bland, less complex, less varied, or too strongly of just one single flavour, and so yes, artificial.
Colour plays an important part in taste too, too uniform a colour also subconciously indicates a simple, artificial composition.

Banana flavoured things carry a high risk of making me throw up, so I just don't have them anymore. Used to have them all the time as a kid until the dots were finally connected. Had them once or twice as an adult thinking "I'll have grown out of that or something" and same thing happens.
Bananas and things actually made with banana, though, like homemade milkshakes or banoffe pie? Absolutely fine with.
The flavouring in "banana flavoured" stuff likely still comes from actual bananas and banana is probably still in there, but any processed supermarket banana crap will either have me feeling sick or outright expelling it violently. There must be an extra thing they put in banana flavoured products as this just doesn't happen with anything else.
