How many people actually know what’s in their employment contract?

At a previous company I asked HR for a copy of my contract as I couldn’t find mine. The company was leaking good staff at the time due to a key senior manager leaving and resulting shift in the culture (towards toxic). I got a phone call within an hour of the request, asking if there was any reason why I wanted it and if they could give me any support. Fishing initially. Then a phone call each week fishing again until eventually saying id not had my salary reviewed in a while and they’d organise a sit down with my manager about it. I handed in my notice a few weeks later, before they could get round to it. I’m not sure they ever would have to be honest. Lesson I learned: asking questions about your contract (especially if you haven’t done so before) raises a flag in the HR department. Sometimes that flag could be used as leverage if you play your cards right/time it right. On the other hand it might draw attention you don’t want. Be careful asking questions to HR, particularly if like me, you typically try and avoid any interaction with them.
