How many people are actually going to be financially OK in retirement?

Retired in 2019, been going fine. We’ve made more than we’ve spent, and when I checked yesterday we hit a big goal of mine. Unfortunately a tax deduction 10 years ago might bite me in the ass, but we’ll still been.

My fellow Americans; do you refer to air-conditioning as "the AC"?

What do we bring to a 4th of July party?

You casually ask ‘can I bring anything?’. A good host will give you an honest answer you with ‘We’re good!”, or a request of something. Often a bottle of wine or something simple. If a friend, I will normally bring a bottle of wine I know they like. The ‘can we bring anything’ request shouldn’t ever be considered rude.

2014. In 2013, work, eat, sleep while living in a house I hated. After positive momentum on our company I started stepping back, and bought the car I never knew I wanted, and condo I never knew I needed (actually criteria was garage with suitable living space). 2014 ended up being a fantastic year.

It depends on where you are. In many states there is a points system, and there are no points for under 10 under. I have, shall we say, a lot of experience at speeding without getting caught. When our are in a traffic flow, just don’t be the fastest one.

Good old doge ball. In probably 6th grade, the gym teacher would join a side. The dude had an arm and was seemingly mad at life, possibly because he was a grade school gym teacher. Having a bunch of 6th graders cowering as far from the centerline as possible must have been a weird power trip. The only thing worse was the square dancing.

In the IRS website, it says you can get an extension to file taxes later but you still have to pay any taxes you owe by today. How are you supposed to know how much you owe if you haven’t filed the taxes?

Posted by SummerN8@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 120 comments

ZogemWho@reddit

We file extensions every year (well, our tax accountant does). You still need to estimate what you may owe and pay that. We’re now in cycle of get refund, apply refund to the next year, repeat.

I aced two years of private high school accounting so balancing wasn’t a problem. I recall going to a grocery story to cash a check for $20 to cover the weekend. I guess $20 went a long way in the mid 80s.

AI should not write Python or C. If humans will no longer write code, programming languages should evolve to the way machines think... not humans.

Posted by SillAlive-Act3@reddit | programming | View on Reddit | 77 comments

ZogemWho@reddit

Lost me when “machines think” entered the room. In its current state, AI copies, not create any new ideas. All the data it needs to crunch just to actually support current vibe coding trends is massive. OpenAI predicts 600b in compute costs by 2030 (https://www.reuters.com/technology/openai-sees-compute-spend-around-600-billion-by-2030-cnbc-reports-2026-02-20/). 600b compute cost for a AI.. it’s mind boggling, and perhaps impossible.

Why I’m ignoring the "Death of the Programmer" hype

Posted by Greedy_Principle5345@reddit | programming | View on Reddit | 270 comments

ZogemWho@reddit

I agree, while retired since 2019, now, I’d use the tools to do the mundane stuff to get the larger objective closer. That larger objective takes thinking out of the box to uniquely solve a problem, AI, in its current state can’t create these unique solutions. I’m talking the creativity that can lead to patent. LLM can’t create anything new, it just regurgitates what’s been done.

He was probably the most cerebral comedian of our time who perfected the art of the dead pan delivery.. ( from memory ) “I have a map of the US.. the scale is 1 to 1… ” long pause “it’s a bitch to fold”.

It would have to be a low rate, and the buyer properly investing delta between the 30 and 50 year. Few people will actually do that, and it will become a life long debt anchor.
