Debit Cards, CC, your ID

Do you carry physical debit, cc cards? And use them at POS?
Another post has me thinking…I haven’t used an actual physical card in a….long time. Couple of years?!?!
I use Venmo, Apply Pay and the like. My ID is also in Apple Pay. I do take that to travel.
I just realized I don’t really have an official “wallet” anymore.
Nothing earth shattering. Just an interesting transition from the days I had a whole wallet with cash, frequent buyer cards AND a checkbook and register (and people’s little wallet size professional pics) lol
I_defend_witches@reddit
I try to use cash as much as possible and do not put any cards on my apple wallet. My CC HSA Debt are actually cards kept separately in a wallet that can be hacked.
Nagadavida@reddit
I don't even have a debit card anymore. They canceled for lack of use and I would never use my debit card for anything other then getting cash from an ATM. If I use my CC and it gets compromised I still have my money and the bank has to deal with the fraud. Buy something with a debit card and it immediately gets debited from your account and any fraud is like pulling teeth to get the money back in there. Also with a CC I can dispute charges and disputed charges don't gain interest or require payment until the dispute is worked out.
leaping_lions@reddit
My spouse got into an accident. They were in the hospital for 21 hours and the phone battery drained because it turns out you didn’t go on a bike ride with a charging cable or cube. The hospital required his ID and health insurance card. Additionally, the ambulance required $200 in cash before they’d leave him at the ER. Thank goodness the wallet stayed in his pocket. His friend retrieved his phone from the side of the road.
HLLAuntClaire@reddit
Don’t lose or break your phone. That’s just crazy to me
leaping_lions@reddit
Found a young woman freaking out at a train kiosk in SFO a few weeks ago. She left Canada without any physical cards and the machine didn’t recognize anything else besides a card or cash. (Which she also did not bring.) She needed to get to San Jose.
Phones batteries die. Screens get busted. Phones get stolen. Phones die. Service can be lost. So many scenarios I won’t even name. Someone did this young person a disservice.
Anyway I paid for her train card and asked if this was her first time leaving home.
Previous_Feature_200@reddit
I pay in gold. One gram bars are worth almost exactly $150, which covers most tabs plus a decent tip.
Brilliant-Onion2129@reddit
Sounds like an intricate scam to me.
Necessary_Giraffe_66@reddit
My bank doesn’t support Apple Pay so I can’t add my debit card to it or use it to reload my Apple Cash balance. It’s a mix of some places take Apple Pay and some don’t. Kroger just recently started taking it and most gas stations around here don’t do it. I have to use their app.
Necessary_Giraffe_66@reddit
Which I do so I don’t get my card skimmed and for the rewards
AnUnexpectedUnicorn@reddit
I used to work in bank fraud. I do not use ApplePay, GooglePay, digital IDs, or anything like that because of what I saw. I do use Venmo but only with people I know. I have my ID, 2 credit cards, and roughly $100 in cash in my wallet. I keep the debit card and other credit cards safely at home.
Ok_Still_3571@reddit
I had a Pay Pal account that was immediately hacked upon opening it.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
So, you immediately reported it and shut it down right? Like when a paper check or CC is stolen.
Ok_Still_3571@reddit
No. My bank called me to say that somebody was “tapping” my account with small charges for things like parking, a gallon of milk, etc. They put a hold on it, and then I closed my account and opened a new one. I use a small local bank that knows me very well. They once called me while I was traveling, wondering why there was a debit transaction on my account. It was actually me, trying to pay for a meal. Love that about them.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Yeah, Visa often calls me when I’m traveling as well. To make sure a charge is authorized.
You could have done the same exact thing with your PayPal account. Your small bank doesn’t have any magic powers or anything. Surely you’re checking your transactions on the regular.
Ok_Still_3571@reddit
I check the account about once per week. Back then (maybe 15 years ago), I was far more trusting, and reviewed the account about three times per month. Mind you, there wasn’t the same online monitoring then as there is now.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
I worked in banking for a long time and have seen it all.
I find this all so fascinating. If something can be used and stolen it’s going to be used and stolen no matter what it is…an online account, bank account, credit card, check.
I like the digital ID option because otherwise my actual physical id can be floating around out there anyone using it for anything.
nmacInCT@reddit
I use my febit card at least 12 times a month at POS. I get benefits of i do that - interest on my checking and refund of any ATM fees. And while i do carry cards with me, i more often opt to use google pay.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Interesting. I really mean that.
I get the same features/benefits no matter how I use my debit or cc.
Is there an agreement that states you only receive those benefits if you use the physical card at POS?
I’m genuinely curious.
nmacInCT@reddit
No. I could use it virtually. And i do sometimes online. But amex is my default for Google pay and i find it easier to pull out the card the few times i want to use it than scroll through my Google pay app.
Ginger630@reddit
I only use credit cards or debit cards. I always carry my ID and cards on me.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
But if your wallet is stolen, everything is gone all at once and you physically have to do something with all your cards, get a new idea, etc.
Just for conversation. That seems like a way bigger nuisance than not having a way to pay for something. And that can be easily rectified.
I think I must shop different than most people too. I’m rarely using an in-store point of sale.
tultommy@reddit
Why are all of your comments trying to combat what other people do? You seem to have some need to convince people that your way is the correct way... I use apps but also carry my cards and ID. You never know when someone won't accept tap 2 pay (lots of places still don't), or end up at a store where it's not working at the moment. You can lose your phone a lot more easily than you will a wallet in your pocket. And it's just as annoying when you lose phone. Plus there are lots of states and lots of businesses where a digital ID is not accepted. Sounds like you live in a place where that is less of a problem.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Says the one who says something “combatful” in an anonymous platform such as Reddit. I’ve said several many times that I really find it interesting.
You get all up in my own business. Lol just like someone who loses their phone easily.
I also don’t live in a world that losing a phone is easier than losing a wallet or purse. I find it very interesting that people have all these times where digital pay is not accepted. I find that fascinating because it’s 2026 and that is just not my reality.
Or that people still use cash on the regular. And that people write checks is insane sounding to me. I just don’t see any reason ever to write a check. And I haven’t had someone try to pay me for something with a paper check. In forever.
So I ask for more detail.
Sorry you don’t like it. Damn.
tultommy@reddit
Asking you about what your motivations are as you try and tell everyone they are wrong isn't being combative. I'm also not sure how using the information you provided to form a response to you is "getting all up in your business."
I think this is actually the point you're missing. It's not your reality. My entire point was that you fail to see that your opinion is based on your own experience, but you fail to realize that most people are not going to have the same experience as you. As I said you clearly live in an area where digital payments and digital ID's are considered acceptable. As you can see from the plethora of other comments that you try to belittle for doing things in a different way than you, that it's not the experience for most people. It's disingenuous at best to pretend like you never find a business that doesn't have tap to pay considering the largest retailer in the world doesn't use it. Also if you find it harder to lose your phone than your purse or a wallet in your pocket that really just sounds like a you issue. The difference in what you are saying versus what I am saying, is that I'm simply acknowledging that there is more than one correct way, and you are simply laughing at people for being old fashioned and that you can't believe they would dare to do things they way they've done them their entire lives. It comes across as condescending and just kind of informs people on the kind of person you are.
Clearly you are easily offended when someone tries to point out that you aren't as right as you think you are. You should probably get some help with that.
SparklyRoniPony@reddit
I carry my cards, but only because not every store accepts Apple pay and other types of payments. If they did, I would only carry my ID. I have always embraced tech though.
Phobos1982@reddit
Mainly force of habit for me.
MyldExcitement@reddit
Phone dies or is stolen and you're broke.
Sudden_Office8710@reddit
That’s what the watch is for. When you’re at the beach, paddle boarding or surfing are you going to have your phone with you or your wallet? No you’re not. Almost no one takes cash at these places because it’s hard to pocket it when it gets registered in square cash is there is less theft.
Just_Another_Day_926@reddit
Same reason I have paper boarding passes for flying. You only need it to glitch once and ruin your day.
I mean if you drive you need your physical license with you. And don't tell me you only have that on a phone that you will hand to someone unlocked if you get a ticket or in an accident.
CalOkie6250@reddit
But your phone isn’t truly unlocked while using Apple wallet. Only the items visible in your wallet are unlocked. The rest of your phone is still locked, and if the person backs out of Apple wallet, you have to scan your face to get back into it.
cl8855@reddit
at least with boarding pass you can print one at the airport
ambientdiscord@reddit
Not with United. You can, but you have to ask for one and it’s a pain in the butt.
Magerimoje@reddit
Right?! Oh, here officer, have my entire unlocked phone that'll give you access to absolutely everything! Hell fucking NO
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
What’s on your phone that police would be interested in? Lol
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
There are states that accept digital IDs. Even if you get pulled over. Mine is one. Not all though.
You remind me of the Progressive commercials.
I don’t think I’ve printed anything in a long time.
MountainRoll29@reddit
Once in awhile a merchant doesn’t have a functioning tap to pay machine so I still carry physical cards and a little cash.
No_Act_2773@reddit
no. apple pay. has all cc's, dc on it.
also phone has the loyalty card apps.
I do have a wallet, but rarely bother with it, unless I am going somewhere and not wearing the apple watch.
as I am UK, we have no requirement to carry id, or driving license.
posaune123@reddit
I always carry a credit card, the cash back and points start to add up.
My only issue with people that pay with there phone is that it's never ready and frequently doesn't work the first and sometimes 2nd time.
virtualadept@reddit
I do, yes. The number of stores around where I live that aren't taking cash for anything other than tips (where applicable) is pretty high. Even the Target out here gives you a hard time if you try to pay in cash.
Lewdubs@reddit
I have the availability to use my phone for payments and have a couple of times, but mostly I just forget to use it.
MamaPajamaMama@reddit
This is me. I just find it easier to slip the card out of the holder attached to my phone than find the app and figure out how to use it.
Breklin76@reddit
Yes. Only a couple of my cards, though. I use ApplePay a lot.
New_Discussion_6692@reddit
I use my cards for everything. It helps with impulse spending.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Do you have to use actual physical cards to help with impulse spending?
New_Discussion_6692@reddit
No, but it definitely helps. I have one grandchild. (Probably the only one I'll ever have.) I spoil her rotten! This little trick keeps her mom happy because I don't go crazy whenever we're at the store. Saying no to your kids is very different than saying no to your grandbaby.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
That makes perfect sense!! I can see that happening.
New_Discussion_6692@reddit
I'm an awful spoiler! My daughter appreciates it, but at the same time it annoys her too. (I can't tell you how many times I've been told, "she doesn't need that" and have gotten " the look" 😆) The majority of the time, I just go along to keep them company, not to actually shop for myself. So, I carry cash to give to my granddaughter. Then my granddaughter either makes a purchase for herself, or gives her mom the cash to make the purchase on her phone.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Both of my teenagers got cash from the grandparents this weekend. And immediately gave it to me to transfer to Venmo.
I have said “you can’t buy her something every time you see her.” To my mom more than once. lol
New_Discussion_6692@reddit
😂 I see my granddaughter every day (we live in a multifamily home and they live upstairs). I can truthfully say, yes, yes we can buy them something every time we see them! It brings me such joy to be able to say yes to her. As the mom, I had to instill limits and discipline in my kids. As the grandma I get to spoil her rotten and be perfectly content!
Ajstross@reddit
I have a leather iPhone case that has a crossbody strap and a small pocket on the back where I can stash my license and some essential cards. I usually use Apple Wallet, but I have the cards for when I need them.
BusterBus75@reddit
Yes, I still carry cards. I don't trust payment apps.
Key_Concentrate_5558@reddit
I didn’t even realize that a photo of my ID was acceptable anywhere.
ChicagoBoyStuckinDen@reddit
I do carry them, but primarily try to use my watch. Not everyplace (Walmart) takes apply pay so I need the card. Banks won't take the digital ID so I need that. IAny other places I can use a digital ID for I do. I have an Ekster wallet with 5 cards in it which is greatly smaller than the Costanza one I carried for years.
beef-hed@reddit
I use my card, and I’m even getting tired of that and want to go back to using cash more often. With everything being electronic, “they” can just take your money from you whenever they please. Same with all entertainment like music, movies, and TV being streaming or digital…..if there’s ever a major internet outage (which seems more realistic every day) people will still wish they had physical copies of albums and movies.
justa33@reddit
Had to go to Walmart yesterday. Had to go back to the car and get a physical card to pay because they don’t take Apple Pay
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
One of the zillion reasons I don’t go to Walmart but I get your point. Thanks!
justa33@reddit
I usually avoid it at all costs !
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Same.
curiousme123456@reddit
I carry cash, use debi card some Venmo. I tell my girls and friends who don’t believe me….if ur a jam, need favor …Venmo probably isn’t working at 2 am ….hey could even be as simple as someone helping push ur car to side of road, get gas, get food when the restaurant is closing and u haven’t eaten in 12 hours. Call me crazy …don’t care because I know that cash did help out of jam like things above.
Cash is never going away. Folks lift ur head up and start to pay attention to how many bars, restaurants, food trucks, gas stations, trades people etc give u a cash price and credit card price
Elliebell1024@reddit
CC, debit and always some cash, what if your phone dies?
curiousme123456@reddit
Exactly. Like I said cash is never going away. It has been slowly dying, however in the last three months, it’s come roaring back because of what’s going on in the world.
Now add an inflation and places, realizing how much more they can do with cash. I think it’s here to stay for a bit more now and more places.
Ok-Shift-908@reddit
I’m 55 F …I made the leap from day one. ID, CC & bank card on my phone. I don’t carry cash. My purse only has my keys, phone, pen, fan & floss. And I only bring my purse when I go to work. When I’m with my hubby I just bring my phone. I pay with Apple Pay. I also have Venmo and now Cash App, because of my brother.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
I love not having a purse!
And I hear you about the fan. Lol
Efficient-Hornet8666@reddit
I only use digital payments if I have no other option, like I’ve forgotten my wallet. I’m fine using my cards, and even my cash.
Arkhamina@reddit
I am... Oof, yeah, I guess I am that mistrustful old person who refuses to make the leap. I do have Venmo, but I rarely use it. No phone pay whatsoever. I only started doing phone banking a couple of years ago.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Interesting. I really mean that. These answers are so crazy. How different. I would think it would be more like 50/50 not this 95/5 thing going on.
And yes…it sounds old man ish or woman-ish.
Arkhamina@reddit
I am training a 21 year old at work, we have a good rapport, and it is crazy how culturally different we are. She barely knows cursive (yes, we need to read it as government clerks!) and has never written a check outside of 1 class. I had to help her address an envelope. On the other hand, she has been typing since she was 4. She's better at troubleshooting our shitty lowest bidder software.
AlmiranteCrujido@reddit
Do you live somewhere you can use your mobile ID as a drivers' license? I thought it was only good for TSA, so I have to carry my license if I'm driving.
I carry two credit cards, an ATM card that is not enabled for debit, my gym membership card, and my drivers license. I use the credit cards daily; I don't use a mobile wallet.
I generally have between $40-60 in cash for emergencies, but really only use it for small amount purchases at the farmer's market every couple of weeks.
I haven't used Venmo since I started working from home, and just had the same $20 that I'd send someone for my share of lunch and then get back the next time I was the one to "lunch-ATM" when that same guy wasn't the one putting it on his card - I never even connected a bank account to it.
Never regularly carried a checkbook; for years, the only checks I've written are to my dentist - usually just once a year for a cleaning although I think this year I've got a filling coming :(
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Yes. My state accepts digital ids. At bars, cops, anywhere I go so far.
I’m surprised by these answers.
I pay almost everything by Venmo.
AlmiranteCrujido@reddit
Venmo has zero consumer protections; I was never willing to give them my bank account. It was OK for paying for lunch back when we were all in office.
Not sure how you'd use it at the supermarket. I could use a mobile wallet (I'm on Android, so it'd be Google's but for the Apple folks, Apple Pay is the same) to not carry a credit card, but it's still going to just charge back to the card. Not sure what I'd gain indirecting that through Venmo.
You're still getting carded in bars? I get asked if I want the senior discount :D
Round_Ad8947@reddit
I ditched the wallet for a Hartford Gear card bag. One card for point of sale (can scan without removing, two cards don’t work) some cash, ID, insurance card and my DNR medical directive with the phone number of my lawyer.
At this age, I’m thinking more about making it easier if I keel over.
Genny415@reddit
I have tried my best to opt out of data tracking as much as practically and reasonably possible
Therefore I don't use a digital wallet at all and pay for everything with a physical card except for a couple of things that I pay with Zelle.
And there's even a couple of things (like quarterly pest control, other home services) that I still write physical cheques for. The providers like them because they can digitally deposit them remotely without paying processing fees.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
But…the same information is on your card if you use it on your phone or not.
Genny415@reddit
But if I use my physical card, my transaction details aren't being also sent to Apple or Google or whomever is running whichever digital wallet you are using. And then consolidated with the rest of the data that they also try to collect, then used for whatever purposes suit their profit-based interests.
Are you paying a service fee for using the digital wallet? Oh no, it's free? Do you have to watch an ad to make your payment go through? No? Then you and your data are the product. That's how it works.
If you choose to trade your privacy for convenience, that is your choice. I am choosing differently. It's still leaky and very far from perfect but that doesn't mean I'm going to give up and just hand everything over.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Yeah. You’re right. No data is being accessed by using your card. lol
What data are you worried about? That you bought a chain saw at Home Depot? Because everyone (card company, Home Depot, the chainsaw company) knows that. That you go to the grocery 1x a week? They know that too.
Not an argument at all but I mean, your data is being collected while you are just sitting in your living room.
What is it you’re afraid of that is going to happen to that/with that data?
Genny415@reddit
The data is used to part you and your money in multiple ways
Why else would it have value?
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
I mean, that’s a stretch.
But I just think it’s interesting that people believe they are fooling someone by using their card. All the same information is used from your phone and physical card.
What do you mean part with my money? Spending on things I like/want? There’s a whole huge marketing and advertising world that affects spending which in turn affects the economy which in turn affects you.
Genny415@reddit
Look, hand over all your data everywhere to the corporate overlords if you like. You clearly have no issues with it.
I'd rather not be a slave to the algorithms
You have clearly been fooled by the illusion of choice they have offered you
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
I mean, it’s not that serious. Lol
Expensive-Vanilla-16@reddit
I carry cash and my discover card. Only digital currency I have is PayPal for online payments because I don't want to use my credit card online. I still write checks too. Just bought a car with a check last month.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
These answers are wild!
Why don’t you want to use your CC online? You get the same protection and rewards for your CC no matter how you use it.
You write a paper check and it’s just floating around for anyone to see your routing number and account number which can be used just like a credit card.
CalOkie6250@reddit
I’m a bit surprised by these answers as well. I always thought GenX was more tech savvy. I would expect answers like this from our parents.
Justdonedil@reddit
I write 2 checks a month now. It was 1.
The space rent for our modular, which includes all utilities. I've been trying for years to get them to switch to some kind of digital service.
And now, the "principle only" payment for my husband's year old truck. If we had a checking account with this bank, I could do it as a transfer, but we don't. They have it set that any payment over the monthly that isn't specifically marked as principle gets put into pay ahead status instead, and that defeats the purpose of paying extra.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Right?! My mom, in her early seventies, gets confused by the tap thing and prefers to swipe. Lol Cute.
But that might not have anything to do with her age.
WimpyZombie@reddit
I always carry my ID, credit card and debit card. Don't remember the last time I carried any cash - although there have been a few times where I wish I was carry a little.
Discovered this year that the Girl Scouts selling cookies outside the supermarket now take plastic....that wasn't good. That was the one thing that kept me safe from those evil little temptresses. It was so easy to just say "oh...I don't have any cash right now, maybe another time". They finally got me this year, and it wasn't a pretty sight.
Evil they are....completely evil.
Justdonedil@reddit
Even the parking lot fruit vendors take venmo.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Yes!!! I used the same excuse “no cash”
My daughter was in GS several years ago and we used plastic at the grocery store sales by getting a Square pay device. Our sales rocked!!!
groundhogcow@reddit
I had to ban using the bank card when card skimmers became a common thing.
We now only buy with the credit cards, because if they get stolen, I can just not pay them. If the bank account gets drained I have to fight for the money back.
I don't use the million different payment apps. I keep fairly tight controls on who has access to money.
I carry a wallet. I have credit cards and ID in it. Also cash. The amish around me don't take venmo and I want home made cookies!!!
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
So funny. There’s an Amish community around me and they all accept card payments. All carry a phone and Square payment device.
I thought they wouldn’t use phones but it’s a “necessity” in their businesses.
groundhogcow@reddit
They do carry them for doing business with us.
I like to buy from the ones who do business with them.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying.
Mountain_Usual521@reddit
I carry cards and cash. I do not use apps on my phone to pay for anything because I don't store financial info on my phone for security reasons.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
But you store financial information at the bank.
Mountain_Usual521@reddit
Yep. If I store it on my phone it will be stored at my bank and on my phone. The attack surface is doubled.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)

Mountain_Usual521@reddit
I do online banking. That does not require storing my credit card information on a portable device.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Oh. Ok.
You’re right. Your CC information stays put!! Since it’s not portable and all.
These answers are crazy. Like we’re all pretty much the same age, right?
Mountain_Usual521@reddit
I was born in the '70s.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Me too. Funny how everyone has different experiences about fairly mundane subjects.
LivingGhost371@reddit
I've never used my phone or venmo to pay for something, haven't used cash in about 10 years. So it's credit cards 100% of the time.
HiOscillation@reddit
I traveled extensively for work, and see how it is possible to be "cashless" in many contexts. That said, I live in a more rural area. Not "middle of nowhere" rural, but about 45 to 90 minutes to a city. We all shoot guns in the back yard, there are working farms, no uber, no doordash, no sidewalks, no police department, no municipal water or sewer, but there's a CVS store 10 minutes away from my house and if I drive just another 20 minutes, I'm in a bustling artsy small city of about 90,000 people. But out here, we're moving in the opposite direction - locally owned "mom and pop" shops have implemented 4 to 5% surcharges for credit cards and/or $10 minimums for any card payments, and all of them heavily encourage cash payments. A few shops have abandoned card payments entirely and gone cash-only.
LivingGhost371@reddit
I live in the Midwest. Figure if they don't want my card, they don't want my money- I'm not going to mess around with the nuisance of carrying cash around like it's 1980 or something just because they don't like my card.
HiOscillation@reddit
That's the thing. "Take my business elsewhere" isn't always realistic.
Example: Yesterday, I needed 4 1/4-20 bolts & 4 1/20 nuts to fix the handle on my lawnmower.
Option 1: Locally owned Hardware store, 9 minute drive, with a 4% charge on card use, or cash with no surcharge.
Option 2: Drive to Lowes - a 27 minute drive, one way. Card works there, no surcharge.
Another example:
I need gas in the car (and this is commonplace everywhere around here, not just locally):
Option 1: Pay an additional 0.10 per gallon to use a card.
Option 2: Don't pay an additional 0.10 per gallon by paying with cash.
The majority of locally-owned food places have a 4-5% upcharge for card use, or a "cash discount." I get it. These places have one location, it's the owner's sole source of income, and they don't have the ability to absorb the fees that are charged to accept cards. They don't have the volume and negotiating power that Taco bell does to lower their fees.
LivingGhost371@reddit
So, I pay the 4% surcharge. No big deal. Worth it to get that bolt without having to either drive to Lowes or deal with cash. .,
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
This is really strange. I’m in small rural towns often in a small rural state and I’ve never experienced this. Interesting.
I’ve had way more times that cash isn’t accepted than cards. Even though it’s legal tender…but I’m not going to make a deal about it.
HiOscillation@reddit
I think that it may be that the small businesses are being crushed by a lot of things such as rent, and the 7 to 8% net cost of a credit card transaction is just another slice they can't afford. I know the guy who owns the hardware store and he told me that he typically made $0 profit on sales under $10, now, with him pushing the cost of the credit card processing to the customer, he makes about 4%. You can't pay yourself a reasonable salary inclusive of your own health care expenses on a 4% profit margin from a single-location store that grosses under 1 million a year and has 3 part-time employees. He's constantly on the verge of closing. The surcharge decision made a lot of customers angry.
Here is some potentially interesting info for you:
"In Philadelphia, roughly a quarter of the population is “underbanked” or “unbanked,” according to the city’s Prosperity Now Scorecard, meaning they have little to no relationship with a financial institution, making cash a main form of payment for them." (Source)

"WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), America’s largest private sector union representing 1.2 million workers in meatpacking, food processing, grocery, retail, and other essential industries across North America, celebrated the passage of Assembly Bill A7929A in New York, which bans grocery stores and other retail outlets from refusing cash payments. The state of New York now joins New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York City, San Francisco, and Philadelphia in banning cashless stores. "

I spent most of my career in banking. Specifically in overdrafts and the unbanked.
The unbanked still use cards. Not debit or CC. But there is a whole big entire (very profitable) world of prepaid cards that are utilized by those that don’t have bank/credit accounts.
A lot of unbanked are unbanked because of previous credit issues. So they had accounts at one time but will no longer qualify.
HiOscillation@reddit
Prepaid cards. So many prepaid cards. And I wonder where CashApp and stuff fall into that ecosystem - still technically "a bank account" but...you know what I mean, it's not a bank account in the classic sense.
Capable-Historian392@reddit
CC only. (Protection).
I pay off my weekly spending every Friday.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
But you can still do that on your phone.
Paying your CCs has nothing to do with how you used them.
Capable-Historian392@reddit
Phones can be stolen.
Paying off a CC weekly is functionally the same as using a debit card, debt wise. No interest is accrued.
CalOkie6250@reddit
I have just one purse, that forever hangs next to the front door…just in case I ever find myself in need of it, I know where it is. I do not carry my wallet anymore either, it stays in the glove box of my car. I keep my main debit card in the cubby next to the shifter in my car, for the few places that don’t accept Apple Pay. Otherwise, everything is on my phone. The freedom is exhilarating!
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
I love this! I have a “purse bowl” that sits on my counter. I saw it on Tik Tok. Lol Everything that used to be in my purse.
The older I get the more purses annoy me. I love not having one on the regular.
tunaman808@reddit
Yes, I do. For one thing, my state doesn't do digital licenses yet (they've been "working on it" for... 6 years now?) Regardless, it'll be a cold day in hell before I hand my unlocked phone to a cop.
Also, I do most of my shopping at my town's "nice Walmart", which famously doesn't do tap-to-pay with Google OR Apple. So I have to use a card there.
I otherwise use tap-to-pay just about everywhere else.
I go to a lot of concerts, and I use a tiny binder clip to carry my license, a spare credit card just in case (my primary card is Amex, which I use for tap-to-pay, and while 99% of places take it these days, some don't). I also keep my hotel room key in the binder, if I'm traveling.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Thanks for that. I get everything you are saying though my experiences are so different. Crazy how we can be so close but so far away, if you know.
No_Button_1750@reddit
I don’t use a digital wallet so cards in wallet all the at for me (46F).
ArcticPangolin3@reddit
Yep. A couple months ago, I went out to run errands and realized I left my wallet at home. I was about to drive 20 minutes back to get it and realized I have a CC in Google Pay. Game changer.
I still carry cards and stuff, but it's good to know I always have a backup in my phone.
Seawolfe665@reddit
Ive had phones run out of battery at inopportune times, Ive had phones die or fall into deep water. Ive had a lot of places not take phone payments. I use credit cards.
Are there states that allow electronic ID? I have one for CA, but its beta and not officially accepted yet. Does that count for real ID for travel? What about passport?
CheezyGoodness55@reddit
Other than the very practical reasons stated by others, this is one that people don't seem to consider when taking their finances completely digital. While a complete failure of the worldwide network might seem unlikely it's very common for devices to lose charge, get lost or broken, and/or get stolen. I know I wouldn't want to be in a scenario where I was suddenly without any form of ID or payment. F that noise and call me a Luddite.
Mindless-Amount-5966@reddit
Apple Pay doesn’t support my state ID yet, so I carry a ridge wallet with my ID and a few cards. I would go full digital if I didn’t need to carry my ID.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
I love it. My husband lost his physical ID one night out and someone attempted to use it to open several loan accounts. You can’t really “close” an ID. But the barcodes are super helpful when people use them.
No idea what else they might have done with that ID.

Yes and it's not touch less either I won't own one.

I use card and apple pay, whatever is accepted/more convenient for the store.
I have started using my card more since I got one of those stupidly cool magic wand things you put your card in and tap to pay. If I'm going to spend money, I'm going to at least try to make it magical.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Wand? Tell me more? It makes it easier to…tap?
tragedyann1214@reddit
Oh, it absolutely does not make anything easier, but it's fun!

I have them all in my digital wallet. I haven't been stopped by a cop yet to see what they'd do with my digital DL though.
Atlanta_Q_Ball@reddit
They can't do anything with it. They don't have the equipment to read a digital drivers license in your phone. This could result in a citation for not having your driver's license on you.
For Georgia, obviously varies based on your State, your digital license is acceptable for traffic stops but law enforcement may not have the necessary equipment to read the license until July 2027. DMV still states that drivers are required to carry their physical license.

I carry my Magpul wallet,id. $100, business and personal debit cards, Cash app card and 1 credit card.
djsmurphy@reddit
I have all my cards in an electronic wallet but I also worked as credit card customer service for many years and I know the kinds of problems that can arise. So, in addition I always take at least one physical credit card, a debit card from a different bank than the cc, and cash.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
What kind of issues?
I was in banking for a long time and I know the data they get just from your card. But what kind of issues?
djsmurphy@reddit
Electrictonic wallet not working, banking system down, computer systems just not talking to each other, fraud on card necessitating shut down and replacement, merchant doesn't accept credit cards, late payment put a hold on the card, over limit, the bank closed the card and you were unaware ( those last three are usually for people who don't manage credit well but you never know)
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
I mean, all of that can happen if you just have a physical card.
djsmurphy@reddit
That's why I have the electronic wallet with all cards, two different physical backups, and cash, even if I'm just going up to the corner store. You never know. I spoke to so many people on long trips who only had one card and that card had a problem.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
I guess 90% of the time I’m not far from home. I figure if I don’t have a way to pay for it, I don’t need it. Or if I do I’ll just try again later.
I haven’t had any problems traveling personally but could see that might be an issue. Especially according to these answers.
djsmurphy@reddit
I talked to a woman once who was two weeks into a seven month cruise and we had her to close her card for fraud. It was the only card she took with her! Frickin nightmare, but I found her a solution in the end. I've got that one in my pocket for the next job interview where they ask "Tell me about a time you went above and beyond for a customer"
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
lol
I get your point but I’m never going to be on a cruise for 7 months.
I have several cards in my digital wallet. Including all my insurance cards, ID, gift cards, etc.
Atlanta_Q_Ball@reddit
I have a MagSafe wallet that I keep insurance cards, DL, Costco CC, and a small amount of cash in. I carry it at all times.
There are very few places where the digital ID in your phones digital wallet can be used to verify identity or age. Mainly just the TSA.
It depends on where I am whether I use Apple Pay or a physical card.
Cash is reserved for emergencies or the dispensary.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
lol
My Cosco requires you use your app for membership scanning. At the door and check out.
There’s a whole process if you can’t do that. Have to go to customer service where there is always a long line of people to make returns.
I can use my digital id everywhere I’ve needed it so far.
Atlanta_Q_Ball@reddit
That's weird. I have a physical Costco card that I rarely carry because my membership details/barcode are on my branded Costco card. That's all I use there.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
I don’t even get a card anymore.
But I guess you’re talking about a cosco branded CC and I’m speaking of the membership card. That is probably different.
Ineffable7980x@reddit
I still use physical cards. I'll use Google Pay sometimes (yes, I'm an Android guy). I only use Venmo/Cash App to send money to friends/family. I've never used it to pay for something.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
So interesting. There are several services that prefer Venmo. I guess they would take a check or cash but since I never have that on hand I haven’t tried.
Just got my dishwasher fixed and the appliance guy had his OMR code ready to pay by Venmo.
Apprehensive-Log8333@reddit
Not only do I use physical cards, I just recently figured out how to tap my card
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Yeah!!!
whiskeywomyn@reddit
I use both physical cards and Apple Pay. There’s still a fair amount of places that don’t do apple or any tap and pay. Mainly smaller businesses and bars and restaurants. I still carry cash and use it a lot at breweries and bars. I refuse to do Venmo or pay pal. I never leave home without my physical drivers license.
asyouwish@reddit
We use the same cards for everything. We even pay it off weekly.
Cash back is king.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
But you can do that with your phone. I use the same CCs on my phone as I would if I used a physical card.
Paying your CCs has nothing to do with how you use them.
asyouwish@reddit
That wasn't my interpretation of the question.
But my phone won't do tap to pay. It has never worked so I have given up trying.
Ok-Conversation-7292@reddit
Yup, every bill possible that does not charge a processing fee is put on a CC and paid off every week.
Cat_the_Great@reddit
I'm reviewing my systems, so if you don't mind...Do you pay every week? Do you have set to an auto pay or do you reconcile manually? Is it truly every week? Tia
Ok-Conversation-7292@reddit
I keep a monthly spreadsheet/ budget that my husband started back in 2001. Log all the purchases, receipts, income, gave hyperlinks for all the banking institutions we do any business and it's like second naure to us. And yes, every week. It helps we're just the two of us working our of the house.

sebastianrileyt2@reddit
I will go one step further, I prefer cash. But otherwise I still use cards.
For me its mostly budgeting. I still go off of the old - when the wallet is empty, you stop buying. Its too easy for me to lose track of spending using cards etc. Plus, I just like the security of physically having it. Machines can go down, power outage etc. Most stores still keep some amount of cash on hand, although its significantly less than years ago.
Historical_Project86@reddit
I'm still tied to a physical card. I'll get my phone out to scan my store loyalty card, then put it away and use a physical card to pay. :-)
starksfergie@reddit
I have my wallet with me at all times still, but my wallet only exists to fit my passports, though I do have IDs and credit cards in it too - and I do have the same card on my phone wallet which gets used much more overseas than it does here for some reason (US), but it's just habit and I'm very, very careful, so never had any accidents or lost anything (really ever, not official documents anyway). that being said, one thing I almost never have these days, is cash. I think the last two international vacations we had to Canada and Scandinavia, oh and the UK, I didn't take any cash for the entire trips and never needed to get any out at a cashpoint either - that was odd
Biblio-Kate@reddit
For those of you saying you never use a physical card, what do you do in a restaurant when the bill comes? Do you let the server take your unlocked phone with them to the register to run the information?
Atlanta_Q_Ball@reddit
Every restaurant I've been to that accepts Apple Pay or similar, the server brings a wireless payment terminal to the table for you to present your payment method. Works for Apple and Google Pay or tap to pay with your credit card. The terminal can instantly print a receipt if desired.
ExtremeCod2999@reddit
And what about gas pumps? I use a major brand station and they don't have tap to pay at the pump, let alone a way to pay with your digital wallet. I've been places where people with a cart full of stuff have walked out empty handed because they didn't take digital payments.
Temporary_View_3303@reddit
I still use physical cards only because I’ve never really took the time to know who uses apple pay. Since I haven’t done that, the cards are still in my wallet and habit takes over.

Wait until y’all are caught up in a data breach and you answer a call from your banks fraud dept re your joint bank account and wind up in the circle of hell I’m now in. This is after tens of texts a day from said companies about your ‘account’.

You are right to point out that nothing is without risk. However, I don't like the idea of having all my eggs in one basket. By doing everything with your phone you create a single point of failure. I manage a lot of box offices for live theater productions and we only take physical cards. People sometimes get irritated but so far it hasn’t prevented anyone from getting in.
Converesly, I always, constantly have people with mobile tickets approach the box office window to ask for paper tickets instead, so they can keep them a souvenirs.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Interesting. That’s not my experience in 2026 but I guess that’s still a thing in some places.
mnbvcxz1052@reddit
24,000 patrons a week come through our doors during productions, and believe me, it’s still a big thing. There was definitely a phase right after mobile ticketing when the folks who would ask were always my age or older, but now it’s the nostalgia thing, and younger gens wanting more tangible reminders of big moments. Sometimes it won’t be until an hour into pre-show, and a person in line will ask, the person behind them overhears and goes “Ooh that’s a good idea!” and the next thing we know a domino effect. I sometimes have to dedicate one of our windows for just “ticket reprints.”
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)

Just an FYI: For people who use credit responsibly, credit cards are safer to use than debit cards, especially online or while traveling, because credit cards offer stronger fraud protection and don't directly expose your bank account.
SpreadsheetSiren@reddit
This exactly. We have two credit cards. One is used for regularly occurring and generally predictable payments to keep the house running: electric bill, heating oil monthly payment, EZPass, internet, car insurance, etc. The other is gas, groceries, Lowe’s/Home Depot/Target/Walmart, the occasional pizza or Chinese takeout, travel, etc.
Both are paid off in full each month with a bank transfer, but we have to initiate it. We keep getting pressured to do “autopay” but there is no way in hell I’m giving any large entity direct access to my bank accounts.
And no credit cards are linked to our phones. We use physical cards. You’re damned right I’m over 50. Old enough to have seen some shit happen to people that I don’t want happening to me.
Oh, and our water company charges a ridiculous fee for online credit card payments. Fortunately, their office is right around the corner from our house, so I take a hellish glee in dropping off a paper check in their lockbox. You’re gonna charge me money for the privilege of paying you? F- off and go cash my damn check, you thieves.
wolf19d@reddit
Exactly. Credit cards are a firewall for your finances.
Pay the statement balance every month and you are golden… even better if you are getting rewards.
spkingwordzofwizdom@reddit
Typical GenX - a foot in each world.
Carry some physical CCs in my wallet and carry it everyday to have ID - but use all the tap, ApplePay, non-physical cards available.
Older folks I know “won’t use their credit cards on the Internet” not realizing that ApplePay creates a new card# for every transaction. Super secure.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
I’m surprised by these answers from people my own age. Lol
As if your cards don’t have a ton of personal information. It’s like your phone is some secret vessel of secrets that only you can access.
I think it’s because I have Gen Alphas at home so I live in that world right now. Cash? No. Change? They think it’s funny. Checks? What are those? Physical cards? If they absolutely have to but they also don’t carry things to carry them in. Like purses and such. So they just carry a card around until they set it down and forget it.
sunfish99@reddit
Same here.
In the wallet: Cash for small expenses ($5 or less), or sometimes when going out to eat with friends (our usual restaurant doesn't takes CC). A couple of CCs. Debit card in the event I need to withdraw cash, but I do this more often when I travel. (Got low on cash once when my trip home was delayed, and it sucked having to find an open branch of my bank on a Saturday and write a check to myself at the teller window.) DL because my state doesn't have digital ID.
I use Venmo to send money to nephew, who has no idea what to do with a check. ApplePay for mass transit and some small transactions.
I never carried my checkbook with me, even when that was more common. Now virtually the only check I write is for monthly maintenance to my building management.
I don't know if I'd ever feel comfortable just carrying my phone, no wallet. A couple years ago I lost my phone, and it took 4 days to get the replacement. In just those few days, I was hamstrung repeatedly by not having it for all the multi-factor authentications that I couldn't do. If I was traveling and didn't have access to any form of payment either, I'd have been royally screwed.
Waesrdtfyg0987@reddit
The only check I write is the older guy who does some yard work once or twice a year.
Tess47@reddit
I do not have any pay mechanisms on my phone. We have a business and I do not want to be the weak link who let's in the hamburgler.
I also do not have any debit cards because debit cards are not protected like a cc is covered. Also normal bank accounts are insured to 250k, business accounts are not insured.
So. No. Everything is breakable, everything will be broken into or has been broken into.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Including your purse/pocket.
Tess47@reddit
Not equivalent but nice try.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Why?
AshDenver@reddit
My ID, health insurance card, at least 2 credit cards and I rarely use Apple Pay. I’ve never used Venmo. I use PayPal for some online shopping. And I write about 6 checks per year.
Kestrel_Iolani@reddit
Exactly, except i write six checks a month. (My accomplishment is not insisting on keeping the returned checks like my grandmother did.)
D05wtt@reddit
Same. Except I haven’t written a check in a few years now and I have way more credit cards in my wallet. I also carry a hundred dollar bill as an emergency situation.

The digital world is limited by connectivity. In central Mexico I have trouble getting a signal.
I also have trouble getting a signal in West Virginia.
I carry cash, cards and my digital wallet everywhere.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I guess if I had regular issues with location and connectivity then I’d need to carry my physical cards. It doesn’t happen often enough (if any) that I’ve needed to so far.
S1nnah2@reddit
I don't use a digital wallet. It's bad enough that visa have to know every transaction I make. No need to let Google know it too.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Oh, Google knows. Lol

Totally agree with you. After reading a bunch of comments it’s almost as if the Boomers have infiltrated our sub.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
I know, right. I’m old and only marginally tech-ish.
People are talking about data on your phone. Like, banks aren’t collecting data from you know…your card?
I love having everything all in one place. So convenient.
I still have Gen Alphas at home. They think pennies are funny. Anytime they get cash they just hand it to me to transfer to their Venmo. Then I have cash I don’t know what to do with laying around.
I also don’t understand why people don’t want to be paperless. Good for the earth.
Poetdebra@reddit
Boomer here. Lol. Barely though. 8 months from genX. But I haven't used anything but the internet to pay for anything in a few years. I buy almost every line. I haven't touched cash in a while.
JMPolisena@reddit
I still carry a wallet and my cards. Something about using my phone--which has way too much personal info on it--to tap random devices for data exchanges makes me uncomfortable. At least if they steal my card swipe it is only my card swipe. I just don't trust big tech enough to give them access to my whole phone at a gas station.
anyoutlookuser@reddit
I feel the same. No digital stored cards on my devices but I do use a hidden door on my phone case that will hold two cards and my DL. So I’m still not carrying a wallet anymore. I do also keep a small amount of cash on me for tips or small stuff.
JMPolisena@reddit
Same. Always have cash for tips!
bigjimnm@reddit
I would never store this critical information on my phone. And I despise Venmo, and would never use it.
Phone batteries always die at the most inconvenient time, and my work does not allow me to carry my phone for security reasons -- i have to leave it in my car all day.
So, of course I carry physical cards and ID, and will not change this until I die, and nothing would convince me otherwise.
Altruistic_Relief189@reddit
I was going to slowly migrate to Google wallet but I keep hearing about a data breach at Google that they haven't owned up to. I have used Venmo once to receive money. I am happy with my huge bulky RFID wallet at this time.
wrenchedups@reddit
Credit cards 100% of the time. I like my cash back. 4% on gas and groceries. 3% on everything else.
I use Apple Pay 99% of the time. I still carry the cards in a thin wallet with my id.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Right. You still get all the benefits of your CC (like cash back) no matter how you use the card.
I get carrying them too but I’ve never had an instance where I was stranded without something vital.
I guess I suppose if someone won’t accept one of the several ways I have to pay them then I don’t need that thing anyway.

dcamnc4143@reddit

sfdsquid@reddit
My daughter uses Apple Pay a lot. This is how I know that for some crazy reason Walmart doesn't take Apple Pay.
Not everywhere does.
I use cards and cash. My bank doesn't allow G-Pay for some reason anyway.
And how does one only carry their ID on their phone? Does that fly if you get pulled over? Cops usually want to see your license.

Good point. I guess I’m not a tourist in those locations.
HighSeasArchivist@reddit
I don't do tap with my phone for lack of trust of billion dollar corporations not fucking something up. Tap on my card I love vs the strips that would wear out, and the chips that were even worse somehow. I carry a thin wallet with a debit card, credit card, drivers license, carry permit, Costco card, and usually about $1k in cash just in case. Thin wallets are much easier on my hip.
Ms-Anthrop@reddit

From a practical standpoint there are a ton of places that don’t accept Apple Pay; restaurants in particular. If Apple Pay is an option I use it, but carry a card for the places that don’t accept it. I never carry cash unless I’m traveling and need some small bills for tipping.

Full digital over here. Been a couple of years. Ohio is a digital ID state, so that was the last piece for me. I keep my “wallet” in the truck in case I wander into a place that might not be digital-wallet-friendly. I tend to know or recognize all my regular spots and how they take payment. Even Walmart, as I use Walmart Pay through the app. It’s kinda handy in that it captures all of my receipts electronically. Are they tracking me? Hell yes. Do I give a shit? No. So they know I like white bread and Speed Stick. Big deal. Privacy is an illusion, especially with a phone in your pocket.

Mundane-Cabinet9883@reddit
Oh thank god. I was beginning to think I was only one who didn’t to use Venmo and all the others. I don’t have any of my cards stored in my phone. I use a physical check for any payments over $250 (property taxes, medical bills, contractors). And - I balk at paying any surcharge when I use my debit card - cause it violates every single merchant processor rules. So I’ll pay with cash or check. Debit cards are processed at a lower percentage and all the fees are tax deductible anyhow. It’s just a way for merchants to increase cash flow and gross income on 3% of those sales.
buckeyegurl1313@reddit

I have a card carrier with a money clip. I usually carry $100 in cash until it’s gone (usually 6 months to a year). I do carry cards (debit and several credit cards, license in the card carrier).
That said, I do have official ID from the state government that’s in my phone. I have ApplePay and Zelle set up so can and do use those.
ApplePay is just tied to one card because I have a lack of trust with ApplePay. I have a card I trust won’t be a hassle if it comes to fraud and that’s what I have tied to it. I also get points for different kinds of spending. I’m not sure how that’s perceived by the card when I run it through ApplePay.
The latter is the real thing keeping me from converting.

Physical cards, ID, and I still keep emergency cash and one check in my wallet. I’ve had to use the emergency cash more frequently than the check, but I have had to replace the check. I have two physical cards which I both use. I still have my CC physical as well, but also on the phone. So for shopping or going out in a restaurant I'll just tap my debit card. I have no digital wallet. I use a debit card — almost everywhere near me takes tap. But lots of farm stands here take cash for eggs, fresh veg, firewood, etc. I also prefer to use cash at places that expect a tip. Some places like the liquor store, have a tip screen that automatically shows up with tap to pay and if you use cash, there is no tip screen to deal with. I am a coward and if there is a tip screen and a cashier watching me, I will always tip even if I don’t want to. Infuriating. So cash works best for that. On the other hand, at the hair salon, I give the hairdresser a large cash tip so that I know she is getting it. She is very young and I asked her how she would prefer her tip. She told me she prefers a cash tip. Perfect!

copperfrog42@reddit
Everything is a physical card, I don't know how to set up a digital wallet. And some places won't take a digital id.
21stNow@reddit
I jumped on Tap to Pay (with phone) when it was first available, but it wasn't widespread since Apple Pay hadn't come out yet. I could do it at CVS, Walgreens, and a few other places. Then my bank pulled out of Google Wallet and tried to do their own thing that never worked right for me. I lost patience with it at that point and never set it up again (I assume that my bank rejoined the 21st century and came back to Google Wallet or whatever it's called now).
JudgeJuryEx78@reddit
I found out the hard way that phone pay doesn't work everywhere when I lost my wallet while on the road for work a year ago.
I carry.
punkwalrus@reddit
Same. I'd say alot of places still don't take payment without a physical card. And a few more rare ones only take cash. I was at a Shell just a few months ago when their internet was down. I could only pay by cash for gas.
NotEasilyConfused@reddit
Remember when half of Spain lost internet a couple of years ago? Chaos in about 4 hours. Phones didn't work, people couldn't pay to get on a bus or buy a meal.
It was interesting to watch how a western society broke down so completely so quickly, and a lot of it was because businesses couldn't make transactions -- even for cash -- without the internet. We should maintain a way to use cash.

LiveLoudWithPride@reddit
I’m old enough to remember going to the bank drive thru writing a check to cash and sending it through the flute to get cash because debit cards didn’t exist.
I don’t carry cash anymore, but I don’t put my information online like that. I am that GenX’r that checks my account verifying Netflix and Amazon only took what they were supposed to take. 😏
CSILalaAnn@reddit
We have a couple if restaurants locally who do not accept Apple Pay or digital wallet payments. Cash or card. So I still carry cards.
wanderingdev@reddit
An ID in apple pay is generally not going to be legal. You should have your ID on you. And what is your plan if something happens to your phone?
DeaddyRuxpin@reddit
There are a couple of states that allow a digital drivers license now. My state of NJ passed a law last year allowing it but has yet to actually implement it. Not that I would ever use it with a cop because there isn’t a shot in hell I’m handing my phone over to a cop. But I’d be willing to use it for buying alcohol or similar civilian uses.

TheSwedishEagle@reddit
That's crazy.
Next_Engineer_8230@reddit
Why?
TheSwedishEagle@reddit
Even my 80+ year old parents, who are the only people I know who still write checks and often pay for things in cash, will use a credit card now and again.
Next_Engineer_8230@reddit
Sometimes you have to.
Hotel/rental car deposits, hair appt deposits, etc.
I didn't say I never used them. By and large, though, I don't.
I pull my paycheck out of the bank, so does my fiance, and we leave enough to cover things if we have to use the card and to cover the checks. Then, the cash goes in one of our safes.
TheSwedishEagle@reddit
That's... unusual
Next_Engineer_8230@reddit
It's different, sure.
We just cover all of our bases.

Must be an engineer thing because I do that too. I mainly write the checks out of pettiness to the gas company because they added a service charge for using a credit or debit card.
Cash because the number of discounts I've gotten when I pull out cash is worth it.
Next_Engineer_8230@reddit
Oh paying cash is very much worth the savings on gas, stores that charge you a fee to use your card, utility (and other) companies charging you to pay by phone or on their website, etc.
Nice to meet you fellow engineer!
Cat_the_Great@reddit
To whom / what do you write checks? To mail in utility bills, etc. or? I have only one check I'm required to write per month, but kind of miss it. Cheers!

I write checks to my bills.
Internet Cell phone Car insurance
Most months I get a "check" (net metering) from the power company but when I don't, they get a check, too.
The lady that keeps my house and the gentleman that takes care of my land and animals.
I write checks or give cash for birthdays, weddings, showers, etc etc.
If I dont have cash and I'm out shopping, I'll write a check (if its an option at the establishment).
I don't do a lot of online shopping, not if there's a brick and mortar store near me but I make a lot of my clothes, grow and raise my own food, make my own laundry detergent, etc (homestead and I work full time - lord come save me!).

Debit card, credit card, $300-500 cash, driver’s license, employee ID and permit to carry a concealed pistol in a bifold wallet. Also always have my phone with Apple Pay, Venmo, PayPal and financial institution apps. Typically pay for things with physical credit card or debit card. Still write 5 or 6 checks a year, too.

I still carry cards and ID in a conventional trifold wallet (though it's now one that blocks RFID), and I still feel naked if I don't have around $80-100 in cash on me. That said, I'm honestly shocked at how quickly I got used to just swiping my watch over the POS terminal, and how annoyed I feel when I actually have to take out my wallet and insert my card like a goddamned caveman, lol.
I'm having a lot more trouble getting used to my first car that uses a proximity key and pushbutton start instead of a conventional ignition key.

I’ve used my Apple wallet for so long I forget to grab my wallet when I get out of my car. But fcking Walmart doesn’t do tap to pay and 80% of the time I get to the self checkout, bag my stuff, run to my car for my wallet, and huff it back inside to pay.
Kalena426@reddit

I've been in IT for over 25 years. I use as little tech in my non-work life as possible. I dunno, I can usually have my wallet out and tap my card in about the same amount of time as it takes to get the phone out, unlock the app and tap it. I mostly use a credit card to pay for stuff, but I do use my debit card because my checking account pays 5% APY interest if certain conditions are met. One of them is using the debit card 12 times a month. I usually use it in the break room at work.
JudgeJuryEx78@reddit
My arm grabs my card from my wallet to tap robotically after so many decades on this planet. Phone takes more steps, imo.
hells_cowbells@reddit
Yep. Same reason I still wear a watch. A lot of people just use their phone, but it's easier to just look at my wrist than to pull the phone out of my pocket and check the time.
badtux99@reddit
I am in the United States. I use my phone for purchases almost everywhere, but my state doesn't recognize virtual ID cards so I need a wallet with that in it, as well as my health insurance card in case I am in a wreck and require hospitalization. There are also places where I am required to scan a physical card for entry, e.g. a local warehouse club that has no electronic app. There was a grocery store chain that required a physical card but they recently updated their terminals to accept ApplePay etc. and I've been using that lately. That said, my wallet has slimmed down a *lot* in recent times. A couple of credit cards, drivers license, insurance card, a couple of physical cards for club access, and a bit of cash so I can buy street tacos or such from joints that don't do cards at all, and that's it.

avocadosunflower@reddit

onions-make-me-cry@reddit
I only use Google Pay if I'm on a 5% cash back at Google pay quarter for one of my cards.
I personally like using physical cards.
I never use my debit card ever. It's not as secure with as many protections as my credit cards are.
ofthrees@reddit
it's insane to me that anyone with an option not to do so, uses their debit card at all, especially online.
when my son got his first bank account/debit card, and i learned he was using it to shop online, i immediately told him to use my amex (he was already an authorized user) and just pay me back. "never EVER use your debit card online!"
he didn't listen/didn't want to use my card... until he logged in to his bank account to discover someone had been taking systematic $200 withdrawals every week for six weeks. i helped him report it as fraud and the money was returned, but it took effort and time. he then immediately applied for a separate credit card that he uses exclusively for online purchases. (though now he uses apple pay as well, which has resulted in its own problems, but that's neither here nor there.)
fraud still happens with credit cards, of course, but when it does, it's not only usually quickly resolved, but it's not your ACTUAL CASH MONEY being stolen.
onions-make-me-cry@reddit
Exactly.
In 2017, I was at work in San Francisco when I noticed someone made a large purchase out of my bank account that day at a shoe store in Dublin, Ireland.
The money was returned to me, but it was extremely stressful in the meantime.
Since that day, I've never used my debit card. It sits in a drawer at home.
AmEx is probably the gold standard for protections. I recently had to file $1,000 for fraud on my AmEx, and it was easy peasy lemon squeezy.
Plus, I make a few thousand dollars every year in cashback.
ofthrees@reddit
yeah, i'm a hard and fast amex fan. i have banked so many rewards points over the years that i can't even think of the last time i used my own money at home depot, for instance - any time i need to go there, i cash out some points and get a digital card. my amex points have paid for everything from plants to a dresser to a toilet to painting three rooms to replacing blinds in five rooms to tile/sink/toilet/light fixtures in a reno'd bathroom.
i don't do cash back on my account - i just get points. between 3x at gas stations and certain restaurants (one of which i'm at once a week with never a bill lower than $120), not to mention the standard points on every single other thing i use it for - all shopping, my cell bill, etc. etc. - i currently have over 300K points... and it was 400K till i used 100K of them a week ago to cash out for a $500 amex gift card for my son. when i hosted his baby shower, i cashed out points for gift cards for raffle/game prizes.
as for protections, yes! they've blocked even my legit purchases just because it seemed shady to them based on my history - but because they send the notifications quickly and respond to them just as, i always have time to authorize so it goes through.
the VERY few times i've experienced fraud on my amex that they didn't catch, upon reporting it was immediately credited and i never heard another thing about it. and there have been a few times when authorized parties continued charging me after i cancelled - also quickly resolved.
i love amex. i still just carry a green, because it does what i need it to do, and they are, as you said, the gold standard. i've been telling everyone i know for 20 years to just go with amex.
i will say i also carry an amazon visa for the times a vendor doesn't take amex. also, the cashback with amazon is actually worth more than my points with amex, so i do use that card exclusively for my amazon purchases.
but other than amazon and places that don't accept amex, it's amex for EVERYTHING.
finny_d420@reddit
Where I live if you are buying alcohol, cigarettes or weed you have to produce a scanable ID at most places. Lost my license once and had to be aware of which stores would accept my passport. I'm in a very tourist city so no to phone pay stuff. Too many stories of scammers getting your info.
Azerafael@reddit
Have a cc but only use it for emergencies these days. Very bad life lesson from using them in my distant past.
Mainly pay in cash though. The lesson learned from my past inability to control my expenditures has taught me that its better to have physical cash so i don't overspend impulsively.
ZogemWho@reddit
Amex on everything. Can’t recall the last time I’ve used cash.
ResearcherHeavy9098@reddit
More and more just cash. Use a card at the grocery store and gas station.
redynair1@reddit
I still use cards 95% of the time, mostly debit. The rest, cash.
I don't see the need for more apps, personally. Maybe I just don't know what they can do besides pay back friends for pizza. I used Cash App a couple of times to lend money to a friend but found it kind of sketchy. I also tried Google Pay once years ago to see what the deal was. Very easy, for sure, but it's just something else to keep track of.
I still absolutely use my driver's license. I see no reason to use my phone for that. Never even occurred to me.

Traditional_Fan_2655@reddit
My phone auto locks unless I have a game app open. Then, it stays unlocked for an extremely long time. If I foolishly forget it is an appendage, anyone could access my info.
Having the physical card keeps me more cognizant of what I'm spending.
As a result, I refuse to use ApplePay for payment. I removed my cards for this purpose. I use my credit card, not debit. I saw a guy from work overdraft at a register where the cashier had to key the amount. She accidentally entered it in the thousands instead of hundreds. They reversed the transaction, but it took 3 days to reverse back.
Credit cards give me more power if there is an issue. They also don't drain the bank if misentered or stolen. Having a credit hold amount won't impact me the way a bank fund amount might. As long as I pay it off, it works best for me. I understand why some people prefer debit, but I've chosen credit to reduce my vulnerability where I can, which isn't much today.
Reader47b@reddit
100% physical cards. Never did get into Apple Pay, but I'm one of those people who throws my phone in a basket when I get home and don't pick it up until the morning...I use my phone for text, GPS, and music/Podcasts. I do everything on my laptop in terms of finance, social media, etc.

i use my amex for virtually everything; i never use my debit for purchases, and only carry it for the rare occasions i need to pull out cash.
i am super resistant to cashapps; i have venmo installed but linked to my amex only (i pay the fee), because I don't trust a third party with access to my bank account. i use it exclusively for dinner bill splits and for a few vendors who mandate it. zelle has been used a few times for family who don't have venmo, and once for a temporary apartment rental.
my checks hang out in my junk drawer; the only checks i've written for years are for income/property taxes/home improvement vendors.

I don’t have a debit card.
ATM, license, 2 cards, money, clip.
Living_Guess_2845@reddit
Tap my phone to pay when there's no fees and use cash when there are. Card is a last resort for places that don't take tap. Never use debit and pay off credit every month.
IndyColtsFan2020@reddit
I still carry a wallet with my license and a couple of cards. I could use Apple Pay but generally forget I have it.
(Been in IT 30+ years and unlike the other guy, I do have Apple Pay and a smart home devices everywhere. Came in really handy when I broke my foot many years ago and could voice control much of the house.)
Plastic-Sentence9429@reddit
I only just added my debit card and a credit card to my Google wallet - like two weeks ago. It's actually nice because I'm way more likely to leave the house without my cards than my phone. I don't typically carry a wallet in my pocket, it stays in my bag and I just grab the cards I may need and my ID.
It was really just laziness more than anything else - I have square pay set up to take payments for various things - but I found myself at work without any cards the other day, and it took about 2 minutes to set everything up through my banking app.
HermioneMarch@reddit
Not all places take Apple Pay etc and I have to get my license scanned for meds and volunteer work. Also, I’d be worried to get pulled over and not have a physical Id on me.
Cool-Coffee-8949@reddit
Not only are there cash-only businesses where I live, but there are bars etcetera where “virtual” IDs are wholly unacceptable. Also our bank refuses to allow tap to pay or Apple Pay on our debit cards.
kittyshakedown@reddit (OP)
Where are you? Curious.
So your bank still sends out a card that you can’t tap to pay? Does anyone at POS have machines for that?? Like the bank doesn’t do them because no one uses them? Or can use them?
It just seems a modern day bank has modern day things.
Why would they be unacceptable? I’m in the US so maybe it’s completely different.
Cool-Coffee-8949@reddit
I’m in the US too. Greater Boston. I’ve yet to find a place where I couldn’t insert or swipe to pay with my debit card. Not including cash-only businesses of course, but there aren’t that many of those.
People from other parts of the US are often blown away that cash-only businesses even exist here.
PaulClarkLoadletter@reddit
There are occasional instances where I may need to pull out my card but otherwise I pay with my watch or phone.
mr_mxyzptlk21@reddit
Still have a checkbook for BIG expenses and emergencies (maybe write 1-2 a year).
Physical driver's license on me, as others said it, I'm not handing my unlocked phone over to a cop.
I keep aboutt $100 cash at any given time because I prefer tipping in cash (and servers/bartenders ALWAYS prefer it), and it's far more supportive of local businesses to pay in cash.
I have google pay/apple pay, but limit what is on there. I'd rather not give an opportunist a single point of entry to all of my money. Friend found that one out the hard way.
HiOscillation@reddit
Yes, because there are many cards I have that I can't put onto Apple Wallet because the issuer does not allow it. I don't live in New Jersey, but I usually get gas in New Jersey, which means that I don't actually get to put the gas in the car (self-serve is illegal) and I've noticed that the gas dispensers don't have tap-to-pay anyway - they take my card and stick it into the chip reader. In my home state, the nearest gas stations don't have tap-to-pay at the gas dispenser, so you have to insert the card.
I always carry cash, because so many businesses around here have cash discounts (sometimes substantial discounts) and a surprising number of locally-owned companies are "cash-only" now - they dropped credit cards a few years ago. The ATM at the bank does not accept a "soft" debit card. The only place I use Venmo is at carnivals and festivals and farmer's markets - but CashApp is pretty popular in some places too. I rarely see Zelle in the wild. None of the locally-owned stores I shop in accept Venmo etc. for anything.
As far as ID, I live in a state where digital driver's licenses are not legal, and I have other identification (First Responder, and multiple building access cards) that will not work in digital form.
I travel to Canada often, they require my physical Passport card at the border.
robertwadehall@reddit
DL, insurance cards, a couple credit cards and a few $20s and $1s in my wallet. I have Apple Pay set up but rarely ever use it.
souvenirsuitcase@reddit
I solely use a cash back credit card. Tax free money!
ClutterKitty@reddit
Definitely. I have to scan my DL every time I volunteer at my children’s school to get in, so I have to carry that. Its an actual machine we stick the DL into, not just showing it to the office staff. Also, I have ADHD. I don’t trust myself to always have enough phone battery to use Tap to Pay. I’d rather carry a wallet than be out with my kids and not be able to feed them, or buy something we need. Yeah, I use tap most of the time, but I always carry backups.
Roboto33@reddit
I mostly just use 2 cards, one primary and one in case. I possibly should use Apple Pay more but I know some places don't use it and I just revert to pulling a card out. I carry only a little cash in case something fails.
Jumbly_Girl@reddit
I bought a phone case that has a plastic card holder on the back that holds 3 cards. So usually it has my drivers license and a credit card and a debit card. Sometimes I switch out the credit card with a bus pass card, if I'm using public transit that day. It's nice to just grab my phone and know I have everything I could need.
cbatta2025@reddit
I still carry wallet with ids and cards. Cash too for impromptu slot playing.
Left_Connection_8476@reddit
I use my cards and cash. My very old iphone 7 doesn't support the updated wallet apps 😆
My purse has a built in wallet. Cards in it include CCs, license, and insurance card.
jenorama_CA@reddit
The only place that forces me to drag out my physical card is the rare trip to Walmart.
87YoungTed@reddit
I carry debit, cc, cash and dl. Passport if I need it. I minimize phone usage as much as possible. No email. Text or call - I'm not trying to read emails on a tiny ass phone screen with my eyes anymore.
creeva@reddit
I’ll use Apple Pay for restaurants orders, online purchases , and the rare in person - but generally physical cards for everything.
There is also no way I would hand over my phone to use ID. If that ever becomes mandated I’ll buy a burner phone just for that.
gmkrikey@reddit
I carry a physical driver’s license. I am not handing my phone to a police officer unlocked. I do have the virtual DL app if I want to use it myself but no one takes it.
Many times that’s all I have with me. My watch and phone support Apple Pay and that’s usually good enough. I often don’t have my phone.
I do have an ultra slim wallet. One credit card, one debit card, DL, health card.
BarefootMarauder@reddit
I'd prefer to use my phone everywhere, but still run into a lot of places that don't support wireless/tap. So I carry a physical CC. I sell a lot of stuff online too, so I always have cash. I will not accept any form of digital payment for in-person sales - and I check paper money to make sure it's real. lol I carry a debit card for ATM use, but it stays locked until I need it.
RikkiLostMyNumber@reddit
Physical ID, credit and debit cards, and always cash, I like to have about $100 on me all the time.
KitchenNazi@reddit
I have a virtual ID (California) but it constantly asks me to refresh and if I don’t I get completely locked out. I did use it once at the airport!
Maverick-Mav@reddit
I use CC at Walmart since I don't have Walmart pay. My state doesn't allow digital drivers license. I always have a wallet anyway. I have a friend in another state that only carries his phone.
alr12345678@reddit
my state doesn't have a virtual DL, so I have to carry that around. I also tend to use my tap to pay credit card in physical form the most. However, I am grateful to have apply pay set up for when I forget my wallet. I have travelled to Europe multiple times and never gotten any local currency because they have point of sale terminals for everything. I do hate dealing with cash.
EelsEverywhere@reddit
DL, one credit card for places that don’t do tap, transit card for buses that don’t do tap. Everything else is on my phone and I haven’t paid for anything in cash in two years.
Grafakos@reddit
Yes, I carry a slim sleeve wallet with my driver license and a couple of credit cards. I always pay using a physical card if making a purchase in person. Can't be arsed to fiddle with my phone for that.
On the other hand, I never use cash and I haven't used a debit card or an ATM in years.
Mikey317717@reddit
90% of the time I use Google Pay on phone or watch. There are some places I go, however, where they don't accept it and I have to have at least one card on me. All Walmarts in my area... I am looking at you. Same with most gas stations in my area unless I go inside.
Post-Covid, why in the bloody blue blazes do some people refuse to get tap to pay?
