How do you do your music these days? Albums, playlists, radio?

Just curious how everyone listens to music these days.
Me personally I listen still to mostly albums and some playlists on Apple Music. Occasionally I’ll flip over to Sirius when the mood strikes…Classic Rewind, 1st Wave and Hair Nation mainly.
tbodillia@reddit
FM radio. New music comes on, I check them out on youtube and download what I like. Stores removed CDs but added LPs.

But albums or playlists?
TheRealCabbageJack@reddit
Playlists. Digital music was a game changer for me - I usually only like one or two songs on an album
Onyx_Lat@reddit
Same. My playlist is like 13 hours long and contains everything from Abba to Metallica lol
Big_Statement_3337@reddit
I am an album person on my streaming services. What do you guys do with those giant playlists? Just hit shuffle every time and hope you get something different?
Kal-Roy@reddit
Yeah I just hit shuffle. Everything is different. If it plays 2 of the same genre in a row I’m surprised. If it plays three then I know it’s just fooling with me.
Kal-Roy@reddit
My main playlist is 118hrs long with about every type of music.
apollemis1014@reddit
Child's play! Mine is close to 280 hours. 🤣 I've been loving the hell out of the smart shuffle. It's turned me onto so many more songs.
Kal-Roy@reddit
Nice!

I'm an Albums guy.

Daylight. Surrender to the algorithm. It's quite fun to compare what you have been offered with others.

A mix. Playlists for newer stuff. Classic albums I still stream the album. I might skip around but no more so than I did on CDs.
jamatosoup@reddit
I do Spotify as well, my library is chock full of different playlists depending on mood etc.

Apple Music Playlists. I synced a very large mp3 collection to it a few years ago via the music match thing. Took like 5 days on a 1 gig fiber line.

Spotify with a membership. Everything's at my fingertips especially with the crazy data package I have now. I play it all day at work on a speaker everyday.

Still the odd cd if I feel like a treat, usually just Cure - disintegration other than that whatever catches my ear on soundcloud downloaded to a stick and played through a usb on a dvd player with an old yamaha reciever with big speakers.
This streaming soundbar thing is shit.

ChrisBourbon27@reddit
YouTube at home. CD's in the car.
MienaLovesCats@reddit
Me too; also U-tube music when exercising and working ( I work alone as a janitor) Do you use YouTube or YouTube music?
ChrisBourbon27@reddit
Regular YouTube
MienaLovesCats@reddit
Have you tried u-tube music? I really like it; for when I'm just listening. It saves battery and plays songs automatically that; it's easy to skip to another song.
AddLightness1@reddit
Transferred all the cds to digital long ego, then continued to buy digital. Have copies of entire collection on micro sd card in the phone, on pc hard drive, and in my nas that I can access from anywhere. Expanded the collection a lot when I discovered The Internet Archive. Don't always have internet or cell service, and I despise commercials. Refuse to pay subscription fees.

CDs, Bandcamp and Prime Music because it’s free. Occasionally Sirius because my wife still gets it for $5.99 a month.

earthican-earthican@reddit
My town has not one but two, yes two, awesome independent radio stations. I listen mostly to those because each one has tons of different (volunteer) djs and each dj has tons of interesting music that they bring in, so I basically hear every song I’ve ever liked, plus new stuff, plus stuff from genres I’ve never listened to on purpose but am happy to listen to if someone else (aka a volunteer dj) is like, “Hey! This is music I want to share with people!”
Love my local independent radio stations. (KRVM and KWVA.) (and I also still listen to “iTunes” - it’s not called that anymore, but I still use it the same way I have since whenever we started ripping cds into iTunes. Haven’t switched to streaming music.
Queasy-Extension6465@reddit
Radio, I'm too worried about our nation and want to be able to hear when tragedy is happening. I always think when listening to canned music I'll miss something important.
abbys_alibi@reddit
Pink Floyd, Moody Blues and Fleetwood Mac are albums - usually vinyl. But I did upload them, way back in the day, to my music app.
Everything else is in a specific mood/activity playlist.
AlanStanwick1986@reddit
I still have albums at home but listen to Spotify at work or the Sirius app. FM radio is dead to me.
Accomplished_Exit_30@reddit
I still buy CDs . But I like to rip them to MP3.
MTkenshi@reddit
Same. I've got hours and hours of music saved on a card in my phone.
Accomplished_Exit_30@reddit
I was wanting something independent from my phone.
fedexmess@reddit
Same. What are you using to rip and play? I recently discovered Media Monkey. Paid Windows app (android version to) but it's what Windows Media player should be. WinAmp was resurrected for a brief period, but it went kapoot again. Foobar2000 can't seem to not screw up displaying album art for me, so gave up on that. I want to migrate to Linux at some point because of the direction Windows is going and rythmnbox is about the only thing I can stomach and it's not great.
I also miss the prevalence of good, dedicated mp3 players. Sandisk made some nice ones at one point. Everything sold on Amazon now is....
Accomplished_Exit_30@reddit
Just Windows Media Player. I was using iTunes on an older computer.
Rungi500@reddit
FLAC is the only way to go.
MyriVerse2@reddit
I find FLAC wasteful. There's no real advantage past MP3 320kbps.
WishieWashie12@reddit
Same. There is just something about listening to the songs in order on an album. The way some leads into others, or tell a story when listened as a whole.
Accomplished_Exit_30@reddit
I have an Innioasis G3 MP3 player with close to 6,000 tracks on it. I like to put it on shuffle when I'm mowing or driving.

I feel like I'm the minority but Sirius Satellite has for me the old school vibe of terrestrial radio with DJ driven channels. I will do Apple music if I want a specific track or album. I'm scared by having lived through album 8-track cassette and CD eras and never ever want physical media anything ever again. To be honest it feels freeing to lose the clutter. Side note Kindle for books no to dead tree media also.

Mostly YouTube and XM radio.
giraffe-zackeffron@reddit
Most of the time, I go to Apple Music—>songs—>shuffle. I listen to so many different genres of music, I like to just let it play randomly. Hank Williams, then slayer. Then Amy Winehouse. Then Mozart, Iron Maiden, Charles Mingus, burning spear, on and on and on. I’ve built a few playlists but rarely listen to them. If I’m in the mood for some, thing specific, I’ll listen to it. But 99% of the time, it’s just song shuffle.
melanybee@reddit
Alexa, play (name of artist) on Spotify or Pandora in the kitchen (Sonos player) and let it continue the vibe. Or play “80’s alternative” which chooses a playlist for me. But lately I’ve been also choosing specific albums and sitting down with the lyrics available on Spotify.
Dramatic_Syllabub837@reddit
I have thousands of physical albums an CD’s and still actively collect. However, I use Apple Music/Spotify for day to day listening. I typically use one of their curated playlists, or pick a specific album/artist I am in the mood for. This is generally so I don’t have to stop what I’m doing to flip a record or grab a different CD.
If I’m specifically sitting down to vibe to tunes, I’m 9/10 playing my records.

Spotify, albums and playlists. CD's, record albums, old iPods that still work. Best of all worlds.
Haunting-Ad-8029@reddit
Mostly SXM / Satellite Radio, primarily 80s and First Wave. Sometimes 70s or 90s or Lithium. For Christmas, I'll listen to some of those channels.
I like the DJ chatter, they'll share what the artists are doing now, maybe a story from back in the day, etc. I've found out about and attended concerts because of that chatter.
proscriptus@reddit
Spotify and SoundCloud. Glitterbox radio is my jam.
PussyFoot2000@reddit

I enjoy watching reaction videos. I'm selective but I enjoy people younger or from different demographics hearing for the first time a song from an artist I love. enosuo@reddit
I usually queue up my entire Plex music library (350+ artists, 10k songs) on random to get a good jump off point when I'm passively putting music on. When I'm actively listening, it's albums all the way.
Spotify to catch new music, and if I like it, I buy the high res version and add to my library.
CuriousPixels7598@reddit
Apple Music! This made me think that the last time I listened to music on the radio was probably 20 years ago.
ILoveLandscapes@reddit
I use Spotify. I have several albums saved that I like to listen to add an album level, and also a few few key playlist. I’ve been curating a 90s playlist over several years that has more or less become perfection. Every time that plays, I’m transported back to high school.

diedforyourzyns@reddit
A mix of both really. Playlists for upcoming festivals or shows. Albums when they drop and a few that I just enjoy front to back.
ZoneWombat99@reddit
I was all about Spotify and streaming, but then I learned how little artists make from Spotify plays.
Also I got tired of Spotify inserting AI-generated music into my playlists (even "hits of the 70s, 80s, and 90s" although it's much worse with jazz, EDM, etc).
Then I learned that Spotify 's TOS and EULA give them full rights to any data you enter on their site or app, including your name and image.
So now YouTube music and/or my own music files ripped from my thousands of CDs one year when I was bored
PrettyFly4Wifi@reddit
Seeing how the majority of us Gen Xers don't listen to terrestrial radio anymore, I feel better having just retired from my 25 year radio DJ career in March.
I'm actually surprised at myself for how little listening to radio I do; and I'm someone who was passionate about it. I went to the very top of the industry and now I can't be bothered by a commercial. Part of me wishes I was still doing it, but radio circles the drain as the companies try to remain relevant.
Effective-Breath-505@reddit

Got my now 15y/o an iPod Classic for their birthday a few years ago and that thing literally never leaves their person. I'm so jealous bc I dreamed of that shit when I was their age, lugging a bunch of mixes everywhere in my lunch box purse so I could be ready for any musical situation.

YouTube premium music on all devices. I use playlists and the custom playlists that YouTube makes for me. To discover new music:
I have an account on YouTube I use only to curate musical playlists. I upvote/like, and add to a playlist anything I come across that I enjoy. I ignore anything which the algorithm wants me to listen to that I've heard before, and I'm careful not to search on anything old on this account.
Over time the algorithm starts feeding me more and more new music (or new to me, music) that I like.
I have a text file in which I then enter anything I really like and go hunting for the mp3.
The mp3 is then added to my archive, which gets burned to a USB stick, which is what I listen to in my car.

I can’t get the mix of genres I like streaming-I like to hear Talking Heads followed by Beyoncé, then maybe Billie Eilish or the Hamilton soundtrack, but if I want to hear current music, streaming has it covered.

Playlists, but often for a single artist so it’s like a greatest hits or general compilation.
I hit up genre specific playlists too, especially for new music, to stay fresh. And I’ll do albums for older stuff that would have been listened to that way when it was new.

I have no respect for the use of streaming radio as it has all but broken the music industry and the reason why seeing a 40 year old band costs hundreds of dollars now.
Being finding cd are practically non existent now. I buy the music I want and throw it on a thumb drive and plug it into my car.
Then I rip a back up cd to store just incase one day I might need it cause media companies like apple and Amazon etc are crooked as fuck.

Apple Music and SiriusXM. I have a bunch of playlists on Apple Music, and I like starting radio with an artist I like. This way, I hear more of that artist, as well as discovering a bunch of other music.
In the past month, I’ve bought two physical media, the first in probably 15 years or so: Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii on Blu-ray, and the Beat set for the concert, as I’ll listen to the albums through Apple Music. I saw Beat live last year, and it was one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen.
Years ago, I had hundreds of records, then moved on to cassette and CDs. I’ve pretty much ditched physical media in favour of streaming. I don’t have a hi-fi set up, and I find streaming to be very convenient, and it does the trick for me.

20yrs ago I had every CD imported, all the album artwork sorted, extra tracks added. Everything. No idea where all that went.
Fun-Fig-7948@reddit
I did the same with my CDs, downloading into iTunes, artwork was a chore, and initially paid that $27 annual fee to have it in the cloud. I have noticed that over time it has deteriorated, some albums have disappeared, tracks got relabelled as a different album and artwork. I have kept some CDs and have tried to delete and add them to my now Apple music library due to this. But some keep glitching after a short time. It’s disappointing but not entirely surprising.

I do a couple of playlists on my phone. I use BandcCamp to find new music. I do not stream music on any platform, since they're designed to rip off a majority of the musicians who use them (you put more money into a musician's pocket by buying one song from them than you would streaming them).
It's tough out there for people who aren't Taylor Swift or Metallica or any of those bigger acts. Shirley Manson has been speaking about this at Garbage shows. There's no way for musicians to make any real money anymore. You can't live off of $12/month from streaming. David Lowery from Camper Van Beethoven has been talking about this since the beginning of the streaming "revolution." There's no money in it, and you the fan are worse off.
So hit up places like BandCamp and the homepages of those bands and musicians and get your music directly from them whenever possible. And if you have to stream (not all of us can afford to buy entire albums, digital or otherwise), go buy just one song. Any platform will do. Seriously. We all love music. Our youth was defined by some of the greatest music out there. Let's support those musicians the best way we can.
Also, BandCamp should pay me for proselytizing for them.

80s hairbands and other stuff I like from that era.

I'm old school. I do have a couple of thousand albums on CD, cassette, or dollar bin vinyl LP record. However, I'm finding in my fifties that the gym is where I have the patience to listen to all of the very subtle background instruments and vocals. My hobby is finding a really CLEAN vinyl rip of an album I already own and adding it to my phone. A few crackles and pops are worth it to get that sweet sweet midrange punch that makes it feel like you are in the same room with the Beatles or Bob Dylan. Finding those 1950's and early 1960's rips even if it's mono can be like hearing the music for the first time. Modern pressings of "newly remastered" vintage tapes are usually a waste of fifty bucks even if it's 180 gram and sped up to 45rpm for detail. If the tapes are degraded, there is just sonic information that isn't there. Paul McCartney's bass guitar is particularly diminished on so called "remastered" albums like Please Please Me and Hard Day's Night.

I used to have a massive vinyl collection, but let go of 90% of it in recent years because I never replaced my old stereo equipment after it gave out 7-8 years ago.
