I would bet a good number of us can even smell this.

Forget Gen X: I remember hating dodgeball when we were made to play it in gym class in the 1960s.
DeaditeQueen@reddit
I remember how it smells when it slams into your face
humble_cyrus@reddit
Used to love playing kickball!! And then they have a smaller one and if it's deflated you can peg people in dodgeball!! Good times!!
BlueFeathered1@reddit
You had smaller deflated ones for dodgeball??
humble_cyrus@reddit
They WEREN'T INTENTIONALLY deflated. I just think the PE teachers never got around to removing them. It was an advantage for me - small hands.
BlueFeathered1@reddit
Ahhh. Now that you mention it, I recall a couple of those, too. But at first I thought you meant you had a deliberately merciful gym teacher and was astonished. š
Capt_Cyral@reddit

acutomanzia@reddit

WRXRated@reddit
Ahhh yes the dodge ball (or as we called it at our school, the German ball). That ball was my great equalizer. All the assholes that poked fun at me and all the little bitches that teased me always wanted me on their team because whomever was on the other side knew that ball was going into their face or buttholes.
I once clocked Natasha IN THE FUCKING FACE. She never said shit to me after that... DID YOU!? DID YOU!?
Hey Chris... why you jumping around for like that? I'll make you jump motherfucker.
This was the early 80's.
It was grand.
lchristaylor@reddit
Growing up in the late 70s and early 80s, this was THE dodgeball. We played dodgeball at school (or poisonball in the neighborhood, which was essentially dodgeball without a centerline and sides where players can roam the entire area) all the time and there were only 2 types of people.
Those who loved dodgeball and those who hated dodgeball.
Which were you?
KeyRelative1774@reddit
My favorite was prisonball. I was small and wiry, but could also catch. Grab a badly-thrown ball and toss it to the bruiser in the prison area and take the win.

Cryo_Dave@reddit
Fair enough that they existed, but were you allowed (perhaps even encouraged) by your gym teacher to inflict as many welts as possible on your classmates? Serious question...
cubecasts@reddit
I mean, we used them for dodgeball at recess in elementary school if that's what you mean? We also used them for kickball where throwing them at the runner was encouraged.
Cryo_Dave@reddit
Okay, you were still permitted to play rough. My kids' schools (they graduated between '11 and '20) were not generally supportive of the general populous (meaning anyone who wasn't participating on an organized team with a waiver) doing anything that could potentially end in injury (or even hurt feelings half the time).

Tinkeybird@reddit
I remember dodgeball vividly. We had a young, male PE teacher in Jr. High and he obviously had a blast picking off every Jr. High boy. He had quite an arm and he would knock the daylights out of some them. Because he never threw a ball at the girls it was easy to laugh. It was a right of passage.

1questions@reddit
What about wally ball?
gneiss_chick@reddit
Wally ball????? Ok remind me please. How did you play that. Is it like handball? We bounced that thing against a wall or in a racquetball court.
1questions@reddit
It was a stupid game, not even sure why we played it. We had a small wall against a portable. Bunch of kids stood with their backs to the wall. One kid has the ball and throws it and tries to hit someone in the wall. If youāre standing against the wall you can only move sideways so you canāt leave the wall. Basically person throwing would try and make it look like they are throwing to the left but then would throw to the right etc and kids on the wall tried to move left it right to avoid the ball. Like I said pretty stupid game.
gneiss_chick@reddit
Canāt be stupid as buttās up haha! We played this one too but I didnāt think any one would know it. It was like handball but if you missed, you had to bend down facing the wall and then the opponent would throw the ball at your butt as hard as they could. It hurt more when they used a racquet ball.
1questions@reddit
Thatās funny. I remember once we didnāt have a red ball available and we used a basketball. I got hot in the face with it, really hurt.

For real, WE FOUND JONATHAN!!
iftheygivinitaway@reddit
Sorry that happened to you. For me it was 7th grade playing mat ball (kickball with gym mats as bases), during gym and the moose-like Joe Dougherty hitting me so hard in the head while rounding third that it knocked me off my feet, and off the base. Definitely a minor concussion as I don't remember getting hit, and came to a few seconds later, seeing stars for an hour, and puking a few minutes after coming to. Didn't even get a visit to the school nurse. I had the pattern imprinted in the side of my face as a bruise for a day or two.
Some things from childhood I don't miss. Being a scrawny, gawky, uncoordinated kid was often not fun. Somehow managed to grow into my body and looks in my late 20s.
maledicte720@reddit
Yikes!! I definitely donāt miss the āwalk it offā era.
iftheygivinitaway@reddit
Yeah. And Joe sort of stopped being a douchebag to me in high school, but I wasn't really in much of a forgive-and-forget kind of phase back then.
The other Joe in our class was also a meathead, but for whatever reason was always very nice to me. He actually ended up marrying a girl from our class, and seem to have had a nice life. She was a real looker, and also always nice to me. People who know me now would probably have a hard time picturing me as a kid. I work in construction.

I kicked one as hard as I could at the wall.. it curved and hit Katie RIGHT in the back of the head. I'm pretty sure she got a concussion and minor whiplash, the gym teachers were with her for like 20 minutes and then the school nurse came and she missed the rest of classes for the day.
No one saw who kicked it and I didn't confess. I'm so sorry Katie, I did not expect the ball to fly like that.

swallowflyer47143@reddit
We always them kickballs which ironically is a lot of balls but these rubber textured balls were always "kickballs"
northshorehermit@reddit
Yeah, we called him that too. I was trying to figure out though, if you were gonna buy one what you would call them. Like whatās the brand name?
swallowflyer47143@reddit
Seems like anything else there is a lot of brands that make them, but searching rubber playground ball or kickball gave a bunch of options. Just something to be mindful of I remember even back then there were knockoffs that felt cheaper and were like a harder more plasticized rubber, often those ones the textured pattern was always bigger on those ones. Just briefly looking waka looks like one of the better ones and it's sold from sporting goods store so more likely to be authentic style.

InternationalEagle60@reddit
I loved 4 square! It was my main experience with that ball. Iād play till my knuckles bled. We had to go outside no matter how cold it was. The ball got wet from snow and sleet, which really chapped your hands. Hitting that ball hundreds of times at recess took a toll. But the satisfaction of a well placed hit at an other kids feet, not just getting them out, but causing them to fall (usually on the ball itself, so no injuries) made it all worth it.

Meh, dodgeball was for the soft kids. I was waaay more terrified of the trampoline!
Not only did you have to climb up to this big as contraption without a step ladder or help at like 6-7yo. But one wrong bounce off the mat and you end up off the trampoline or worst face plant into the metal framing cuz there was no padding in the 80ās. I know first hand on the face plant and all I got was a towel for my bloody nose while the next kid jump on and bounce right the fuck off the trampoline.
Itās amazing the shit that was allowed in elementary school without your parents permission.

That was my first experience meeting a woman who was different -- you just knew that she wasn't typical, and I think the kids liked her more for her uncommon way of speaking to kids (more like a cool uncle than a typical teacher). She never had kids, but I feel like we were her kids in a way.
Teachers are truly wonderful people, and always deserve more credit than they receive. Out of all of the teachers I had, she's the one I remember the most, and I liked Gym class during those years because of her. Once I moved on to Middle School, I found ways to not go to Gym anymore.

Let us all not forget the ending of any dodge ball game where one poor soul was left and was facing down at least 6-7 of these all at once from the opposing team in the final kill to win. More often than not, it was always the weaker/smaller kid who spent the entire game just trying to survive the game and not be noticed only to be the main focus in the end.

On the last day of jr high (1979) the athletics class was playing dodgeball in the gym and just going nuts for the last day of school. I caught a ball and came running to the line and unleashed the hardest throw of my life. It slipped out of my hand sideways and went straight toward the sideline into our meanest coachās face. I freaked out and ran back into the crowd to hide. I saw the coach trying to discern who threw the ball and it looked like I was safe. Then I heard my best friend on the other team yelling my name and laughing. Luckily the coach didnāt figure it out. That was the last dodgeball I threw in jr high.
