Did you go to preschool?

OP coming back to note how interesting it is that's a pretty even split between the "no preschool" and the "some preschool/nursery school" crowd. I also think it's interesting that a lot of you could read at age 3 or 4 like me. We were smart. Thanks, Mr. Rogers. I never had kids, but among my friends' kids all went to preschool. Every single one of them, even the few friends I had who were SAHMs.

My mom stayed at home until I started kindergarten, and then she took a part-time job. I guess that may have something to do with why I didn't go to preschool/nursery school. Funny how I never put two and two together. I assumed I didn't go because my parents didn't want to pay for it (yes, I was already conscious of money being tight at that age).

Ha.. they never knew what to do with me. And it got even better. I got tested as having a college reading level when I was in second grade... but I couldn't do math to save my life, so bumping me up a few grades wasn't an option. It was awful.

Man, I think I would have been delighted. I would have been able to test out for sure. I was already an introvert by the time I started kindergarten, so I wasn't a fan of the classroom.

I was in a medium-sized town in Maine, and I lived on the poorer side of town. None of the kids in my neighborhood went to preschool. Maybe the Richie Rich kids on the other side of town did.

What is a small pleasure from the past that you miss?

Yeah, that was a good time. I was definitely using the Internet then but it all felt new and exciting still. I was fascinated by discussion groups and the fact that you could make "friends" with strangers on the Internet, and it was all pretty innocent then.

I miss delayed gratification. Hoping you might hear a favorite song on the radio. Hoping the local TV station will replay a movie you like-- and being so excited when this happened. Now you can just access these kinds of things any time you want them, which is nice in its own way. But it does make everything a bit less special.

Do you feel invisible as a GenX because of your age, gender or both? Or is it just outright age discrimination? Or you just couldn't care less anymore?

That hasn't happened to me yet, and I'm 54. I feel people's eyes on me a lot. Earlier today I went out for a walk and some guy gave me a sidelong look and said "Nice!" as he walked past. Still being objectified at my advanced age, I guess.

You're 49, not 99. Chances are you still have many decades ahead of you. You'll hopefully live to enjoy retirement and do more of things you like. So no, this is not all there is. Sorry about the sex thing though.

Yeah, no friends. Moved to a new city/state seven years ago. Quit drinking, so bars and parties are no fun anymore. I work remotely and have no kids. I'm introverted by nature, so making new friends would be challenging even in the best of conditions-- and people around my age just don't seem to be seeking out new friends. I do have a boyfriend, so there's that!

I always text in full sentences (usually paragraphs) with correct grammar and punctuation.... but I hate texting, so don't do it very often. It honestly takes me longer to decipher a text full of abbreviations than it does for me to read full paragraphs.

Where my ex-smokers at?

Terrible-Horse-6200@reddit

I didn't quit smoking until 2018. Both my parents smoked, and I went to art school where everybody smoked. Some of the best conversations I've had in my life took place over cigarettes. I miss that part of my identity. Both my parents died of lung cancer, though, so I guess it's for the best that I stopped.

I was into punk in high school, but Neil Diamond was my mom's favorite singer, and Neil Diamond records are basically the sound of my childhood. I love the man's early music. No shame.

Weirdly, I have only begun to recognize the greatness of Steely Dan in more recent years. My boyfriend plays their records often. Their work is so complex and interesting, and they don't sound like anyone else in the world. Great stuff.

I think David Gates's voice was just unearthly. Such an underrated singer. I agree... I'm well rounded! "Bread" immediately popped into mind when I saw this question because a few years ago, I posted a picture of my cat on Facebook, not realizing that my "Best of Bread" album was visible on a table in the background. My eagle-eyed Facebook friends spotted it right away. Man, did I get some flak for that.

Maybe I’m too old to understand this, but what the hell is an “influencer” and do any of my fellow Gen X care what they say or do?

"Influencer" is such a stupid word. You know what influences me? Art. Writing. Cinema. Things that make me think. I'm influenced by artists, not some twit shilling makeup on a Youtube channel.

What was something a teacher did or said when you were in school that they would be fired for today?

I had a teacher who was a Vietnam vet. He clearly had PTSD issues and once flipped a seventh-grade kid to the ground because he came up behind this teacher and tapped him on the shoulder. "DON'T EVER APPROACH ME FROM BEHIND!" the teacher screamed to the stunned kid who lay splayed out on the floor. Another time, he threw a desk at a kid in History class.
