You find yourself standing in front of a Brach’s pick-a-mix, what is your go to candy?
Posted by thewiremother@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 466 comments
It’s caramels all day for me, occasionally one of those butterscotch things. My mom is turning 85 in a few days and someone gave her a Whitman’s sampler. Got me thinking about old school candy. Like See’s, I think they’re still around.
How’s your A1C?
hedibet@reddit
Didn’t brachs get sold? I bought some Jelly beans from them. Those used to be the good kind. The formula had changed. Blech. Especially the pink ones. Ruined.
Singular_Plurality@reddit
Brach’s got sold to a European company called Jacob’s Suchard (maker of Milka chocolate and Toblerone) back in the mid 80s, which then in turn got sold to Philip Morris in 1990 or thereabouts. Brach’s was excluded from that sale and was eventually sold to or merged with Brock’s Candy, based in Chattanooga, and became Brach & Brock’s Confections, which in turn was acquired by Farley & Sathers in 2007. In 2012 Farley merged with Ferrara Pan Candy Co. to become Ferrara Candy Company.
Fun fact: Gotham Hospital in “The Dark Knight” was actually the old Brach’s factory and administrative building in Chicago, which was closed in 2001. They blew it up for real when they made that movie (watch clips on YouTube). It’s always fun when I point at a window in the third floor and show my daughter where I used to work… 🙂
hedibet@reddit
Wow! That’s quite the candyland adventure! How do you know such wonderful and interesting facts?
Singular_Plurality@reddit
My first job after college was at Brach’s. First at their Oakbrook Terrace office and then at the factory on Cicero Ave in Chicago. Hence why they blew up my office for the movie.
It was fun while it lasted…
AveryRedlance@reddit
I wondered why the jelly beans disappeared. For a while I was able to get them at Easter, but now I can't find them at all.
Away-Equipment4869@reddit
Yeah and then the company it was sold to got rid of the best ones! Dumb!
thatsmypurseidku@reddit
IDK what they were called, but they were perfectly round suck on candies.
BattleSwallow@reddit
Red? Gum inside?
thatsmypurseidku@reddit
No, just a solid ball like a small sucker without a stick. Very basic, but the flavors were good. 😊
thatsmypurseidku@reddit
I think these are the ones I'm thinking of.

Neapolitan Coconut!
Arkhamina@reddit
I love Sees, as weirdly they're ALSO the best choice if you have a celiac who loves chocolate. I grew up with Whitmans, but Sees is my go-to know. Order your mom some bridge mix 😄
esoteric_vagabond@reddit
Sees is AMAZING.❤️
AlmaMonarca11@reddit
The nougat with the colorful "fruit" pieces throughout.
Carachama91@reddit
They are very easy to make if you are feeling nostalgic. Search google for fruit nougat and you will find recipes. I recommend chopping up the candy fruit slices instead of using dots.
thewiremother@reddit (OP)
These are surprisingly popular. I don't think I ever tried one. Looked too much like fruitcake.
makeupandchocolate1@reddit
My dad always has Brachs peppermints on him. My grandma always had those chocolate stars.
pomegranatepants99@reddit
Chocolate star?
LizinDC@reddit
Sees is still around and you still get a free piece when you come in, but boy is it expensive
adelec123@reddit
But so much better and more satisfying than most of what you can get at a store 😋😋
PM_meyourGradyWhite@reddit
Raspberry and or caramel.
DoveOnTheInternet@reddit
My girlfriend gets us Sees candy for holidays. Their jelly beans are fantastic! I would go straight for the mallowcreams and the starlight mints (her favorite).
Intermountain-Gal@reddit
I don’t pay attention to the brand, so I’m not 100% certain if these are Brach’s, but I like the butterscotch and the cinnamon discs. I’m not a huge candy eater.
atbowe@reddit
Bridge mix!
worrymon@reddit
Brach's has anything other than caramel? I'm sure you're right, but I never bothered to look because why bother when you can get caramel.

The neoplitan doesn’t exist anymore. It would be my go-to as well. Much sadness.
formerretailwhore@reddit
as close as I can find
These taste pretty similar
jenorama_CA@reddit
I’ve seen those, but they’re so big. I just want the little bite-sized cube. I wonder why Brach’s discontinued them?
formerretailwhore@reddit
Because they take away everything good we love.
They are big, i buy one once every few years, I'll spend a couple days nibbling on one. I'm not a coconut fan, except for these and those girl scout cookies
Photobuff42@reddit
I have to stay away from sugar anyway.

First choice is always rooting around the Royals to pull out the Maple, Butter Rum, and Vanilla Royals. Then square caramels. Cinnamon bears, if they have them. Cinnamon disks and butterscotch disks to top off the bag.
Loadtapchanger@reddit
That Neapolitan coconut chew thing 🤤
AndyWSea@reddit
I make a coffee drink like this. Coconut, strawberry and chocolate. It's delicious.
Pristine-Lawyer-3260@reddit
Recipe?????
AndyWSea@reddit
I just use equal pumps strawberry and coconut syrup and whisk in some cocoa powder to make a sauce and then add espresso shots and milk.
Pristine-Lawyer-3260@reddit
So...I could do this... To make the sauce, thicken a little with confectioners sugar, lol and put over vanilla or 🍫 ice cream!
Holiday-Window2889@reddit
But the fourth segment was caramel, which I would pitch.
FriedaClaxton22@reddit

Iggipolka@reddit
Shout out San Leandro! Gotta love the discounts at that factory.
PoisonPizza24@reddit
Nope - I’m in South San Francisco!
AveryRedlance@reddit
They're still going! There's a store locator on their website (not sure if I'm allowed to post a link). chocolateshops . sees . com
Fritz5678@reddit
See's is definitely still around. I grew up in the bay area. There was always a box of See's assorted at Christmas. On the east coast now, my parents always bring a box when they come to visit. It tastes exactly how I remember it from childhood.
FBS351@reddit
See's had a whole large kiosk at the King of Prussia mall outside Philly at Christmas.
Fritz5678@reddit
They have the holiday kiosks in VA, too. Just not the same, though. Typically, they stock the kiosks with candy from the LA plant. The South San Francisco plant has a whole different taste and IMHO so much better than the stuff from LA. Especially if you do the mail order. It really doesn't ship well.

Capricorn75@reddit
I used to have a serious wintergreen lifesaver addiction. I would go through a couple of bags of the individually wrapped large ones a week. After a year or so my teeth started chipping, the crown work began, my bank account rebelled, and I had to give up my precious.

Caramels, even better cow tails, and Turkish delight
Capricorn75@reddit
The individually wrapped caramels. As a six year old I would casually browse in front of the Brachs display while my mom shopped in Walgreens, and pocketed a bunch of those bad boys. It was very clearly in sight of the cashier. I had a crappy home life, and my mom was not someone whose bad side you wanted to be on. But those caramels were worth every risk. Did this about 2-3 times and never got caught.

Seriously why does this question keep coming up? You can search this sub for "brachs" and find that it's been discussed as infinitum
Some subs have moderators that remove repetitive posts, but i guess the mods over here are just uber nostalgic or something sigh
GenX-ModTeam@reddit
If you have a question or concern, contact the mod team directly and do not post in the sub.
qriousqestioner@reddit
It's always more efficient to complain than to scroll by...
RealCrazySwordGirl@reddit
I mention it because you'd think that if anyone has been reading this sub for more than a month or two, they've seen this question asked, and i might suggest that the people who are actually contributing members of a supposed community might have something to say about the community content and not be told to stfu.
But hey, i see, all the gen x people downvoting me here are so busy being stuck in the past (you know, when they were the mean girls in junior high) that they haven't yet grokked that in 2026, everyone is entitled to express a thought on a public forum.
It wasn't even an opinion. It was an actual fact. If you really want to know what everyone's favorite brachs picamix was back in the day, well, dude, you can look it the fuck up. You don't have to ask again and again and again (and again) 🤷🏼♀️

send_it_431@reddit
Where? Id kill to know
HildaTheChickenGirl@reddit
They're Seattle based. So there's still stores in Washington. I know they ship too.
ExquisitePreamble@reddit
They are based in LA, I believe
9trystan9@reddit
Sees is Chicago based. And most candy is Chicago based
HildaTheChickenGirl@reddit
Definitely not
HildaTheChickenGirl@reddit
You're probably right. We were always told they were local 🤷♀️

OkAd8714@reddit
Yes! These are exactly what came to my mind. I used to cut them up and use them as “food” for my Barbies. God, those things were so delicious.
ClassicOutrageous447@reddit
They are very easy to make. Made some at Christmas for my niece. She said they were spot on.

I'm with you on the discs. Butterscotch, cinnamon, COFFEE!
The bears I don't recall at all. You must be younger.
iwantmy-2dollars@reddit
We still have plenty of Sees in California, just down the street actually. They no longer sell bonbons which is sad, but a Bordeaux bar will do.
Neapolitans all day from Brach tho.
theodorathecat@reddit
No Tipperary Bonbons???
Remote_Hour_841@reddit
Yeah it’s always gonna be Sees for my family too. Also, great user name! 😂

See’s is definitely still around. My Dad buys me a 2lb box every year for my Bday. 🤦🏻♀️
qriousqestioner@reddit
I went to outpatient rehab in Oakland when I lived in San Francisco in the aughts. First stop out of BART home from rehab was right by a See's. My sugar cravings caused me to stop by and leave with the big, white, plastic shipping bags full of delights.
Toffee and chocolate can make beer seem quaint. Oh how I love See's candy!
CrazyBitchCatLady@reddit
Caramels. All day, every day.

qriousqestioner@reddit
Those strawberry ones were so good!
I liked the white and brown striated ones a lot.
I feel like the social contract was broken when I could no longer grab the Brach's assortment as I wish. (When did they go away?)
Cflottisme@reddit
I think they were called Sparklers? It was an assortment of hard fruit candy. At least that’s what my mom called them.
Pitiful_Palpitation9@reddit
Anything but Brach's.
the_Snowmannn@reddit
I thought this thread was going to be about mix a six pack of beer. The title didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. at first. But now I rememeber.
My mom would sometimes give me a nickel to pick one. ONLY ONE. And I'd always just get a caramel.. I knew that I liked them. And I could only have ONE.
Mixed six pack of beer is much more interesting these days though. I love trying new beers all the time. And I can have SIX, all different. And, yeah. Sometimes there's still Caramel involved.

MiddleKlutzy8211@reddit
Peppermint! Love them. And? You know with Brachs that they will be good. I ordered a 2 lb bag? 3 lb? I don't remember now back in the winter and they are almost gone. I did give some away, though.

Newsman1977@reddit
We have a See’s Candies in Tucson, at least I think it is still open. Maybe two of them. Still some of the best camel treats around.
But for the Brach’s, I am going with a bag of the Neapolitans every single time.

Future-Ruin9770@reddit
They were called Gum Dingers in the 1980s.
There were a couple of enterprising guys in junior high that would buy pounds of them and sell them in class for 25 cents each. The less entrepreneurial among us didn't think to go buy our own in bulk.

Chocolate stars so I can make the peanut butter blossom cookies the right way! The stars can go in the oven on the cookies, still hold their form, but the inside of the chocolate will remain soft even after they cool. Hershey kisses just don’t cut it because the tips burn.
Lickford@reddit
They supposedly still make them seasonally but I have not been able to find them for a few years.
