Texting in full sentences

Who else only uses full sentences with punctuation when texting? I can use & understand the text slang I just never use it. My kids tease me for hating the stupid thumbs up emoji and absolutely refusing to use it.
genghis_Sean3@reddit
Not only that, I am also a frequent user of ellipsis…
Apparently that’s very passive aggressive and that’s why some younger coworkers are hesitant to text me.
ANTICONSPIRATORIAL@reddit
Oh boy, I use ellipsis on a daily basis...
TheSwedishEagle@reddit
They better be afraid

I do sentences but also slang. Feel what I’m putting down?
Labcorgilab@reddit
I'm picking up what you are putting down
Euphoric-Anxiety-623@reddit
It took me over a decade to not space twice after the period, but I still proofread for the dreaded comma splice. I don't think I'll ever stop using complete, grammatically correct sentences with proper punctuation in my texts. When I discover an error after I've already sent the text, it's all I can do to not send a follow-up correction. Okay, I do send a correction sometimes if it's a particularly embarrassing error, or I fear the message might be misconstrued as a result. I usually keep these "correction" texts limited to close friends and family.
scratchfury@reddit
I will never stop using two spaces. Never!
Away_Bit_3382@reddit
I think I'm looking into a mirror!
wieldymouse@reddit
I text in full sentences for the most part but sometimes forget the period at the end of the last sentence. I do use some basic abbreviations and the thumbs up emoji as well.

I like speaking in full sentences and using punctuation. I text this way, too. Grammar lovers unite!

My ex wife was Millennial.
The "k" would get me fired up.
omfgwhatever@reddit
Well, potassium to you too.

This made me snort laugh!🤣
siciliana___@reddit
I do this, too, but I put double spaced between wash sentence bc otherwise most people will just skim.
OldGamerX79@reddit
I do. I think it's because I am old and never got into net speak or anything like that. I know it but seldom use it.
rentedlife@reddit
I can’t stand when somebody says “K”. I mean is it really hard to write 2 letters? Plus you can use the microphone. Haha
Mallev@reddit
Kk
Creaulx@reddit
I've accepted this, but still wonder why it exists... 🤔
Complex-League3400@reddit
I always write "okay". It's just a quirk.
What I don't understand is why people leave major autocorrect/ predictive text errors to the point where their message makes no sense.
Joethebassplayer@reddit
came here to say the exact same thing
winterboo@reddit
I have an ex that used to respond with only “k” to everything I’d say when he was mad at me so I am 100% with you on that.
Creaulx@reddit
I spend almost as much time correcting typos that no one cares about as I do texting. When things get too text-heavy, we call each other. Carpal tunnel will let me know when it's time to switch.

My of my texts are talk to text and Siri throws punctuation in wherever it wants
psiprez@reddit
Full sentenes are expected for work texts, so I never broke out of that. Using an FYI, BTW, or OMG is about as fancy as I get. If I am feeling saucy, I might throw in a TY.
And K is most definitely not OK.

Rambling-Holiday1998@reddit
Yeah. My texts are very long and detailed, and in proper English with punctuation. My kids hate it. I just can't do the slang except for quick little answers to their texts. If I'm trying to communicate something meaningful, it will read like a five-paragraph essay on your phone screen. Sorry to my kids, probably never going to change. ( I just remind them that their grandmother would not text at all and expected them to actually listen to her voicemails and at least I don't do that! LOL)
Harold_Spoomanndorf@reddit
I've got no problem with emoji's, they're handy. I also use a good number of acronyms to save time...but I just can't bring myself to use text slang
emryldmyst@reddit
I do and when anyone has anything to say about it I tell them I refuse to dumb myself down for others
Admirl_Ossim06@reddit
I had someone use 'ud' in a text. Come on! (Instead of you'd)
Terrible-Horse-6200@reddit
I would have no idea what "ud" stands for. I'd probably waste a good 10 minutes trying to make sense of it before giving up.
5150-gotadaypass@reddit
Wow! I hope you slapped them upside the head.
Terrible-Horse-6200@reddit
I always text in full sentences (usually paragraphs) with correct grammar and punctuation.... but I hate texting, so don't do it very often. It honestly takes me longer to decipher a text full of abbreviations than it does for me to read full paragraphs.
Greasystools@reddit
I have dropped my Gen X full sentences and punctuation with my kid, still do it with peers so they won’t think I don’t know grammar good

I’m a writer. I’m also a former teacher of English, and I once received a paper written in “text speech.” My student didn’t see the problem. I almost lost it. I refuse to give up on the written language. So I will text in sentences until the day I die.
Ok_Industry3016@reddit
MBA going for my PhD drives me batshit.
Tberd771@reddit
I am a firm believer, that every single line text, bad grammar usage, and internet contraction, brings us one step closer, to the film Idiocracy.
AdhesiveSeaMonkey@reddit
These are facts. And I'm not comfortable with our speed at this point.
AdhesiveSeaMonkey@reddit
I'm a math teacher and when students email me questions/requests written like a text, I tell them I don't respond to emails written like that. Then I wait for the next 5 revisions until they have a correctly formatted and grammatically correct email. I get nit-picky about it. I think it's a lot more fun for me than it is for them, but after a couple of emails, they come in correctly on the first attempt.
wisemonkey101@reddit
I don’t think it’s out of line to tell someone you don’t understand what they are trying to communicate.
Key-Low-3896@reddit
A former supervisor, maybe 12-ish years ago, had told me that at a different company, he had received a job application in “text speak.” Needless to say, that applicant was not hired. I don’t recall if they provided any feedback or not.
Times-New-WHOA_man@reddit
Exactly. As a teacher I always told my students I wouldn’t lower my standards to their expectations. They needed to come up and meet mine. They almost always did, and were grateful in the end. That’s something I see lacking in education these days but unfortunately our hands are tied by “policy.”
spider_speller@reddit
Depends. I usually do with a few emojis and abbreviations thrown in if it's friends and family. Everyone else gets full sentences. With my husband, it's a mix because we enjoy sending each other long strings of increasingly threatening emojis. Were that kind of couple.
CrowsSayCawCaw@reddit
I mainly text in full sentences with punctuation. I don't have kids and rarely text with any of my nieces or nephew these days, so I am texting with fellow middle aged people for the most part. Sometimes I will use an emoticon or two in a conversation.
I occasionally use basic shorthand like TYYL, but can't with one sibling who knows zero texting shorthand. I made the mistake of referring to something as a PITA once in a text conversation with her and she was confused why I brought up pita bread.
No-Jump-9601@reddit
I normally use sentences, they’re short but they’re full sentences. I’d rather get my point across in a couple of texts than the back and forth texting, if it’s something more intense, I’ll call. I’ll use emojis for certain people and I’m also guilty of using just a thumb emoji, up or down.
greatvow@reddit
I do both depending on who I am texting with close folks might be some emoji etc. often shorter precise comments. The less close we are the more sentences and less emoji
Joethebassplayer@reddit
I get annoyed when people reply in the affirmative by just sending "k"... Which is already from the abbreviate "ok" which is another abbreviation of "okay" which is derived from "all correct" (oll korrect - 1830s old English form)...
GrumpySnarf@reddit
Now I want to use oll korrect just to be difficult.
Greasystools@reddit
That would be oll korrect though
Own-Lemon8708@reddit
Common misconception about the meaning. "k" is actually derived from "fucK you" and is commonly used a short hand reply meaning as such.
jawshoeaw@reddit
When you already have carpal tunnel syndrome, any abbreviation is an improvement. I use Teams at work a ton and ‘k’ has been a godsend.
YonKro22@reddit
Recommend speech to text saying the punctuation and proofreading it when you're done. Keep it short so you can proofread the whole thing without scrolling. Typing on a tiny screen it's so so archaic.
CrankyCrabbyCrunchy@reddit
Full sentences here too.
Given how many frustrated college professors I hear about how their students can’t write or read more than a few pages(let alone an entire book), it’s not something they should be proud of.
johntwoods@reddit
It feels as though there are so many new acronyms being used by knuckleheads.
rly, rn, tbh, nvm, smth.
I hate it. I hate all of it so much because they are all lazy, forced, unearned, and unnecessary.
It would have been acceptable if we were without unlimited plans and paying by the text message. But we are not.
Sure, I'm old and grumpy. But I'm also correct.
jawshoeaw@reddit
I’m with you. But most people are terrible writers at baseline so I don’t know why we expect texting to improve the situation
morts73@reddit
I write in sentences and paragraphs and occasionally use atm, tbf or smh.
The_Lloyd_Dobler@reddit
I don’t write text messages like Abraham Lincoln would (although maybe I should I try) but I definitely use sentences and punctuation. I abbreviated more when it was T9 based texting.

Wild_Read9062@reddit
I text in full sentences with punctuation, but when speaking, I go extra heavy on the punctuation.
platypusandpibble@reddit
Ah, I see you went to the William Shatner school of communications.
amsurette@reddit
I always use full sentences. I understand some of the lingo but it got out of hand. What’s wrong with just typing what you mean?! Why are people in such a hurry that they have to abbreviate everything, or make up new words?
amyteresad@reddit
Full sentences are more clear and leave less to misinterpretation. Also, Gen Z needs to get over themselves about the thumbs up emoji. It's not passive aggressive.. just means, "I got it" . They will realize when they get I the work place, that you need to be skilled in forming full sentences for communicating.

My son was texting me and some kids in his class saw it and said, "how cute, he uses spelling and grammer and everything". I told him and he laughed. He said he does that with me but not with his friends. He code switches texting based on the audience.
Bartlaus@reddit
I do and so do my kids. Even the 8-year-old.
I do use the thumbs up thing though. Semi-ironically.
thecardshark555@reddit
I do use full sentences and punctuation for the most part. So do my kids, and my close friends.
I hate a MFing thumbs up. I will sometimes use abbreviations like LMK (let me know) but I will not type things like b4 and u.
Bob_12_Pack@reddit
Yep, and proper punctuation too.
Substantial_Cow7628@reddit
Most of my friends are younger than me and some of them say my use of punctuation means I'm "angry" with them.
Kids are weird.
Nice-Track4271@reddit
I still remember a reply from my son asking if I was mad at him or just old (for using punctuation).
Substantial_Cow7628@reddit
I genuinely can not put "angry" and "correct punctuation" together. And when I ask it's never explained to me either.
RemyJe@reddit
I hate it too, but from their perspective it makes a kind of sense. PERIODT.
We even call it a Full Stop. It’s like literally saying “Full Stop” out loud as a stressor, just the text based version of that.
Substantial_Cow7628@reddit
No, their perspective is silly. Sentences start with a capital letter and end with punctuation. Having an emotional reaction to that is just weird.
RemyJe@reddit
I’m not endorsing it, I’m understanding it. I agree it’s silly, but from a linguistic perspective it makes a weird kind of sense.
If someone said (as one does) Full Stop at the end of a sentence, they’re emphasizing what was said.
Because they DON’T use punctuation, they see it the same way as someone saying “Full Stop.”
PERIODT:

vinegar@reddit
It’s like your mom calling you by your first, middle and last name. It’s ‘too proper’.
Dramatic_Reporter_66@reddit
I frequently use sentence fragments and/or no punctuation in texts. If I happen to write a longer text with multiple sentences, I will use proper capitalization and punctuation.
However, not using to proper form of their/there/they're, your/you're, too/to, etc. bothers me way more.
Clarification: Sentence fragments are OK as a single text. A jumble of words with no punctuation that should be expressed in multiple sentences also drives me crazy.
SAMixedUp311@reddit
I text in full sentences and words... nothing else grinds my gears more than getting "txts lik this n hav it not b writtn evn halfway decent."
DesertDaddyPHXAZ@reddit
I use full sentences and punctuation. But, I’m a dinosaur, so there’s that …
Admirable-Status-290@reddit
Even worse—I use semi-colons and em-dashes correctly in texts. And correct punctuation in and around quotes.
I’m a monster.
Salt-Woodpecker-6280@reddit
..that being said, it could be worse. I (or you) could be so dated and sign each text with a closing like, “love, blah blah blah”, like my father does. 🤣
Admirable-Status-290@reddit
You mean “‘love, blah blah blah,’ like [your] father does.”
Gr8Diva71@reddit
I literally use voice to text dictation. I try to always use correct grammar and corrected punctuation. I dislike “text speak“ and refuse to converse in emojis. In fact, I dictated this post.
chabs1965@reddit
I can't not use full sentences with punctuation. I never understood using letters to replace words. And if there isn't punctuation, I'm gonna read it as a run on sentence which will drive me crazy.
u35828@reddit

I don’t text in full words or sentences. I don’t like predictive text or autocorrect, so they’re turned off on my phone. I use text shortcuts & abbreviations, don’t worry about capitalization or punctuation. I love emojis and often communicate solely with gifs, memes, or photos.
Husband and daughter (zillenial) use full sentences with all the proper grammar etc.

🙋🏻♀️ Me. And, I will die on the hill that is two spaces after a period. If someone texts me any abbreviations, I become deliberately obtuse and make them explain it to me even when I know what it means. It's getting rediculous to have to Google something just so I can understand it.
AdhesiveSeaMonkey@reddit
I'm with you on the Oxford comma - it's critical for me.. The two spaces thing, not so much. It's a throwback to days of monospace fonts, before proportional spacing came along, many many years ago. Today, I don't know of any style guide that uses it. APA, MLA, Chicago Manual of Style all require a single space after a period. They don't even offer and exception for monospaced fonts like Courier.
JitteryTurtle@reddit
I’ve been getting into E-books, and this bullscrap about not needing to double space after a period with modern software is completely wrong. “Let’s just jam all the shit together because we’re lazy and can’t be bothered to hit the space bar twice!” What’s next, ignoring the double yellow line?

Tberd771@reddit
I was raised that bad grammar is a reflection of your intelligence. And a constant need for slang, and contractions shows that as well.
A person who needs vulgarity to express himself, lacks the ability to form complex ideas. If you express yourself in short single sentences, you aren't as witty, or intelligent as you think you are. Because I'm a reflection of the society that raised me.
SnooBooks007@reddit
Brevity is the sould of wit.
Tberd771@reddit
Brevity is the tool of an overactive ego, trying to sound witty, or someone trying to portray themselves as someone to be taken as a sage of wisdom.
Genuine907@reddit
As someone who has to sit through shift reports, brevity is a gift and Santa needs to leave more of it under the tree.
Tberd771@reddit
Being concise and to the point, and brevity are not always the same thing. Short single word sentences reflects an inability to express complex thoughts. Especially in the internet age when people try to sound more intelligent, or impactful, than they really are.
HammerMeUp@reddit

While we’re on texting, does any else have friends or family who insist on sending multiple very short messages one after the other on a single subject instead of one longer message?? My mother passed in 2017 at the age of 76. A proper, respectable woman in all respects. Her embrace of text slang and shortcuts were infuriating. This woman would not let me leave the house in just a t shirt. I had to wear a collared shirt always. Any question of "can I?" Was met with " I don't know, can you?". "Me and John" was always, "it's John and I". Having her respond to a text with "K" drove me nuts.
jaynewreck@reddit
My dad was an English professor for 40+ years. He texts like a tween. It makes me insane.
Genuine907@reddit
That is maddening just to read! I cannot imagine my dad texting in abbreviations, but he was an ALL CAPS GUY. When he was diagnosed with glioblastoma, I told him that I now understood his capitalization. 😂
Party_Eye9396@reddit
My mother was the same way with me growing up. I wasn't allowed to say ain't, either. "Stop saying ain't, it isn't a word!" She'd say. "It is, too!" I'd reply, "It's in the dictionary!" "I don't care, stop saying it!" 🤦🏻♀️ To this day, I don't say it very often. Unless it's in song lyrics 😂🤣
HammerMeUp@reddit
I may type with one finger, but not a chance am I not typing real words and using punctuation. Well maybe I leave the last period off sometimes but it does bother me a little
JadedAd6614@reddit
We were taught proper grammar and spelling for a reason- so we could be understood in writing. Therefore, I text in full sentences, full punctuation and proper spelling (when I don’t miss a letter, mistype or don’t catch auto-correct correcting incorrectly-lol). And I was a fashion design major in college, not English, although I thought about minoring in it. Male, 57.
Just_Me_79@reddit
Xennial and I text in full sentences & use punctuation!
xxDailyGrindxx@reddit
I respond with full sentences for anything requiring more than a thumbs up acknowledgement.
ditchdiggergirl@reddit
Always. They don’t get to change the language out from under us. And we were texting before they were born. They can suck it up and deal with my punctuation; they can code switch as easily as we can, and any misunderstanding caused by their failure to do so is on them.
New-Bookkeeper7320@reddit

mediaseth@reddit
I text with ... elipses...
BuckyGoldman@reddit
I use full sentences, with punctuation, and rarely use emoticons. I do use abbr. and acronyms for common words and phrases. 👍
OkAccountant8077@reddit
I do the same, although I will use certain emoji with some frequency (usually thumbs up, smiley face and birthday cake when appropriate).
SpiritualMuffin2623@reddit
My silent generation dad and I text back and forth pretty regularly. My dad writes the most wonderful texts of anyone I know. More like how you write a post card.
Unusual-Ad-6550@reddit
I refuse to post anything, text or social media, that is not in clear, concise English...no short cuts...
Substantial_Layer_79@reddit
I do. I also required my children (all in 30's now) to text in complete sentences to me. They are all working professionals and say they get compliments on using proper sentences. They won't as much as use ok or k...it's always okay.
kafin8ed@reddit
I usually use voice to text so yeah it's basically complete sentences. It's hard to abbreviate or make emojis with V to T.
PopeInThePizza@reddit
My niece tells me I'm literally (used properly I hope) the only person who uses semi-colons in texts.
SmokedPumpkin@reddit
No you’re not.
AuntZilla@reddit
Your niece is so, so wrong.

Meeeeeeee! But I do use abbreviations and have an unhealthy reliance on emojis.
cab1024@reddit
Proper sentences, capitalization and punctuation midi if the time. I'll use emojis to accent. And extreme brevity. But I'm not using the string of nonsensical letters the later generations use.
wisemonkey101@reddit
I do use emojis. But I have to have real sentences and punctuation. I didn’t learn how to diagram and compose a sentence for nothing.
cab1024@reddit
Darn tootin'!
Correct_Security_742@reddit
I always speak and write in full sentences. For the most part. My closest gf gets some abbreviations like lol or omg.
Pinstripe-Giraffe@reddit
I usually use full sentences, but I don’t generally use punctuation or capitalization unless I’m texting my mom or I need to be absolutely clear. Sometimes for comic effect. I don’t use 1337-speak, but I do use emoticons and older Usenet-era abbreviations (mostly LOL, LMAO, IMO, that kind of thing).
Ibyx@reddit
At least I’ve stopped putting two spaces after a period. Lol.
TeacherLady3@reddit
I still do that. Old teachers die hard
Ibyx@reddit
Only when texting. Emails still get the two spaces.
HeyKrech@reddit
Never
jetpack324@reddit
Always. My mom raised me to use proper grammar and punctuation and I cannot stop doing that now. I have embraced emojis though because I type so slowly. Efficiency for the win, but not at the expense of grammar
Ammortalz@reddit
Don’t do abbreviations, but do tend to leave out the pronoun ‘I’.
Low-Goat-4659@reddit
I do text in full sentences. Something that drives me nuts is using acronyms right out of the gate. I don’t know every single one (I bet no one does). It’s common courtesy to me to type out full words then put the acronym in parentheses for further use in the rest of the text. This is a lag from junior high composition.
bamagurl06@reddit
That’s way too much work. Text are suppose to be simple and to the point.
Low-Goat-4659@reddit
IHAHTAYLW
HCRanchuw@reddit
I use full sentences, punctuation, and emoji’s. But I keep it brief. I’m not typing a novel on my phone, so if you ask me something that requires a complex answer you’d best be prepared for me to use my phone for its intended purpose without warning.
Tberd771@reddit
The absolute worst is "can I ask you sumthn" Drives me up a wall. Just ask the question and be done. And for the love of God, use correct spelling and grammar.
Tampadarlyn@reddit

EverythingScrolling@reddit
9th grade for me. My classroom was the last one to still have electric typewriters, too. The other classrooms in the business wing had gotten Windows desktop computers. Windows 3.1, probably.
Dr_Newton_Fig@reddit
10th grade, but was canceled after the first semester. I appreciate it nonetheless.
shumway74@reddit
I’ve been using the dictation on my phone for a while now, so I text in full sentences because I speak in full sentences. Irritates my kids but I don’t care. I’ll even go back and edit them if the phone gets it wrong.
jonny_mal@reddit
I love that voice to text can do punctuation too
DevilMan17dedZ@reddit
Couple years late to be a gen-xer... early 80's baby. But, I still feel the same way. There's no reason to be a total lazy ass with your text messages. The other thing with texting being a pain in the ass is the complications that can arise when context can't be seen/heard.
HelloThisIsPam@reddit
I do. My Gen Z niece told me that when I use punctuation in texts to her, it makes her scared and hurts her feelings because she thinks I'm angry with her. Because of punctuation.
Key-Low-3896@reddit
Holy shi…that’s a real thing?!? I had thought that was an exaggerated stereotype.
The_Calarg@reddit
Nope, all three of my daughters say the same (32, 25, 24). If their mom leaves off a period they are on the phone with me in minutes asking if she is angry.
Must be a millennial and younger thing.
EyelanderSam@reddit
What are they teaching in school?
bamagurl06@reddit
It has nothing to do with school. They are text messages. No written English assignments.
EverythingScrolling@reddit
I've heard this before and truly don't understand it. All caps? Sure, that comes off as angry. But punctuation? Give me a break.
Barthle@reddit
My daughter told me she thinks I'm mad at her when I put a period at the end of the last sentence.
Bitmush-@reddit
I like to give the impression that I’m engaged with the person - an appropriate emoji can be great as a witticism when several words would be clumsy and verbose. If it’s actual information that’s being exchanged then proper sentences to make the meaning as clear and concise as possible. Writing English using the common rules of grammar is excellent for this and being bothered to make yourself clear for someone else’s benefit shows respect and projects competence. Eschewing formality for its own sake is a pathology. Just type the fucking words properly - either you have and or make time or you don’t, I won’t think what you want me to of you if you half-ass it, Greg.
SmokeyWolf117@reddit

Apparently the thumbs up is taken as condescending and a pink heart should be used instead. So I use the thumbs up now. 👍
bamagurl06@reddit

sodascouts@reddit
I tend to use full sentences for the sake of clarity, but they're concise. No "thru" or things like that, but I'll let the old school abbreviations like "lol" sneak in. I like emojis and gifs, but I use them with discretion. And sometimes I'll even write them out. ;-)
New-Sheepherder2239@reddit
I do, can’t change
SushiGirlRC@reddit
Sometimes I get really crazy & not end my sentence with a period. Living on the edge!
The_Calarg@reddit
My wife does this and within minutes I will get a call or text from one of my daughters, sometimes all three, asking me if Mom is angry.
rottenbox@reddit
Generally full sentences. Or at least mostly full, sometimes I hit send too soon and there is an immediate follow up.
Unless a 1-2 word reply is all that's required. "Running late, can you pick up the boys?". Sure or yep or thumbs up.
My mom who is almost 80 texts regularly. But not just a sentence, they tend to be a full formal paragraph. "Hi dear, are you ..." But she has discovered the thumbs up.
Top_Management7550@reddit
They make fun of you because you added one more letter in the word to spell it correctly
lazytiger40@reddit
I text sentences cause I want my replies or thoughts to be clear to the other person. Even if it's a one sentence reply. And I agree if it's going to take a long text or many texts back and forth I just call the other person. As for spelling, it is how I was taught and I prefer to not use autocorrect.
Most_Pea_246@reddit
And I see you correctly using two spaces after your sentences.
Ok_Key_4731@reddit
My millennial and Gen Z coworkers used to think I was mad if I replied to a teams ping with “OK.”

Brilliant-Onion2129@reddit

myopicpickle@reddit
I only use an emoji if all I'm doing is an OK something. My husband throws them in everywhere, sometimes to emphasize the word he just wrote. I hate it.
The_Calarg@reddit
Always. I tend to be accused of being an AI often as I do so online as well, along with proper use of eclipses and Oxford comma's.
My kids have always told me that my texts can easily be misconstrued as angry, as their generation understands abbreviation as informal and kind.
EverythingScrolling@reddit
This! A few years ago, I volunteered at a crisis line where the majority of people we helped was via text. People would text, and us volunteers used a platform supervised by mental health professionals. Per our training, I used complete sentences with punctuation. We were specifically trained not to be overly casual.
I bowed out after a couple of years because I burned out after several texters got abusive with me.
PirateJim68@reddit
Being a networking and telecommunications major and speaking to people from all over the world, I have had to text and email without slang and without commonly used abbreviations. Many things don't translate well so using correct grammar is a must. It is and has been a part of my life for years so it won't change now. My kids despise it, but will text in full when they talk to me. (All in their 30s)
Quirky_Commission_56@reddit
I majored in English Literature, so of course I text using full sentences with the appropriate punctuation. However, I have to admit that it’s incredibly annoying when an app “suggests” an incorrect spelling of a word and I have to correct it or it drives me batty.
ErNz77@reddit
I get annoyed when autocorrect makes a word for multiple things possessive.
Independent_Tough_81@reddit

I tell mine he has to send a complete thought. Otherwise it's
"Hey mom, what are we doing tomorrow?

We saw this new Ramen place..."
Like, please, just one text of "do we have plans tomorrow? If not, I'd like to go to the Ramen place with friends. My phone doesnt need to ping 5 times, especially at work. But LOL, even my mom (late 70s) does the thumbs up now.
GlobalTapeHead@reddit
It depends on who I am texting, but I do trend towards using full sentences. Sometimes, when the response is appropriate, I might use emojis or other text slang. But like I said, it’s only under the circumstances where it truly is called for.
Independent_Tough_81@reddit
Most of the time I use full words, sentences, paragraph breaks, etc. I do use shorthand, abbreviations, etc. but only about as much as I would in a verbal conversation.
Turbulent-Bother8748@reddit
That’s me.
captcha_fail@reddit
I'll use emojis and an occasional abbreviation, but I have a graduate degree in linguistics. People expect me to have a certain communication style.
I think about this sometimes when I'm watching true crime and someone takes a dead person's phone to text back. I'm safe from impersonation. The person on the other end would immediately know it wasn't me.
jeffnorris@reddit
Guilty as charged.
lazytiger40@reddit
I do...and spelling is important
bamagurl06@reddit
Why? It’s a text message. You’re not writing a letter. If your text are that long , you can leave a recorded message.

MarSha70@reddit
When my son was a young teenager and I was paying his cell phone bill, I reserved the right to go through it every so often to see what he was doing in it. I also told him writing in shortcuts would have his phone taken away. He wrote in complete sentences with correct grammar and punctuation. A few times, I saw that he was correcting his friends!! lol
However, since taking over his own payments, I no longer have the right and his texts to me are typical for young adults his age…. Sigh….
PlaxicoCN@reddit

Same here. I even go back to correct any grammatical errors I may have typed before hitting “reply”. Get its own line

My sister-in-law (GenX, one year younger) does this and it drives me crazy! I;ll respond to a line, and then she ends up typing something else unrelated to what I just said. It makes it hard to carry on a conversation, and talking to her in person is even worse, but for different reasons...

Sensitive-Rip-8005@reddit
I used to but now I don’t care. It shows with my Teams messages at work, too. With some of my coworkers, we sometimes just use emojis and gifs to each other during meetings. You ask for something? If I can do it: 👍🏻
And forget about typos! I don’t care anymore. You know what I meant. But I do sometimes get frustrated seeing the “typing” prompt that I just want to say that I don’t want to sit there watching you type when all you need to do is call me and tell me.
