Realistically speaking, how much knowledge is required for entry level IT positions?

Posted by DescriptionFuture851@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 71 comments

RPG_Rob@reddit

Yeah, to an extent that's true. Most 1st line IT "call monkey" jobs that have already gone to Bots. They are great until the network goes down. There are a few companies biting back and using "you are always talking to a real person" as a sales technique. You may be lucky enough to find one locally, or a PC repair shop. For most entry-level IT jobs you can get away with just a little bit of knowledge, but if you really want a change you need to go back to school. This is what I did. 10 years of factory work after leaving school unqualified. Went back as a mature student, and was in IT support for 25 years before branching of diagonally.

What are peoples experiences with houseshares in the UK?

I lived in a few... The nicest was an old post office that was owned by a lady in her 70s. Part of my (low) rental agreement was that I had to sit with her in the evenings and discuss the events of the day. This was a very rare but quite lovely arrangement.

Never been able to pass the manual driving test due to essential tremor. Is it worth learning and attempting at least on automatics?

I had spinal surgery nearly 20 years ago, which left me with no fine control over my left foot. This means I cannot gently operate a clutch, and I've been driving automatic cars since. It's fine.

People over 30, have you never visited London?

One of the things I really like about London is the number of foreign accents and languages you can hear just by walking down the street.

Do you feel proud to be British?

Posted by LochNessMonsterMunch@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 133 comments

RPG_Rob@reddit

I feel the same. I've never been able to align with the mentality of being proud of something that is simply a part of your identity. I've never been able to say "I'm proud to be a member of [Nationality/Regional Birthplace/Ethnic Group/Social Class]" because I have not achieved anything by it. I'm proud of things I've done, of achievements attained by my effort, and together with the efforts of others. But I don't see the point of being proud of something that you played no active part in, such as who you are just because of when and where your parents had sex.

What's it like living in Exeter? I want a walkable small-ish city that's historic and safe.

Gemmel was excellent pulp fantasy, and Druss was a much deeper character. From Eddings, I did like Silk, but despaired with every female character.

I loved the epic scope of it. It was massively refreshing after the contemporary writers like David Eddings who were churning out vaguely interesting plotlines but 2-dimensional characters. It paved the way for much better quality fantasy writing.

I miss the smell of 80s/90s lipstick. It was a strong aphrodisiac to teen/20s me, immediately evocative of long snogs. They changed the UK regulations in the 90s to remove the pork fat from it. It didn't need that perfume added any more, and so it vanished from the makeup counters.

57. Went to one last year because that's where the group I was out with ended up. Hated every second of it. TBH, I was a club bouncer in the 90s. I'd always preferred rick clubs anyway, but working as a bouncer, handling drunks, fights, drugs, sexual assaults, and dealing with DJs in particular, made me despise everything about nightclub culture.

Throughout my life, I have found that roleplaying games (not D&D or its carbon copies, but those with less of a combat and competitive focus) have vastly improved what I now know are my autistic traits. That, and reading an awful lot of fiction. The experience from both of these fields is that you are putting yourself inside the mind of somebody else, and reacting to (or reading about) the situations that they face in the flow of their story. They really help to learn how neurotypicals might think, and the social interaction with the other players and GMs are great opportunities for learning and having others explain what behaviours are rude or unacceptable in social situations.

I think of my mate Nick, one of the last proper gentlemen. He was a submarine sailor for 30 years, retired, and retrained as a butler. I met him in the Sealed Knot when he was the Lord General of the Royalist (Cavalier) army. He moved to New York, and worked for the rich. He was a horseman, and used the stables in Central Park, where he became friends with the Park Rangers, and eventually joined them. He was an active member of the campaign to save the horse carriages. He was a voice-over actor, and appeared in several adverts and a rap video as the monopoly man. A great guy, packed with personality, with a thousand stories. RIP, Nick.

Are more people struggling than they let on in the world today?

Posted by Plastic-Strategy-538@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 575 comments

RPG_Rob@reddit

Exactly. Complaining about something being Woke is them looking for others to agree with whatever bigoted opinion they have about a marginalised group or activity that has so little impact on their own life that they'd never even thought about it, and arguing that therefore it must be unnecessary for the marginalised group, too.

If you've changed religions, what made you say, "This time, this is the right religion"?

Posted by leal31@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 133 comments

RPG_Rob@reddit

I was raised with Jewish and Catholic parents, and allowed to choose. I chose Judaism, because it made sense and encouraged questions, where Catholicism seemed to contain a lot of unnecessary nonsense and doing as you're told. About 4 years ago, I became an Atheist, because religion made less and less sense after I had been through some really hard times. So. I've "changed" at least once, technically.
