How many people are one pay check away from disaster?

Posted by DramaticErraticism@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 220 comments

PilotC150@reddit

The reason you hardly see those posts is *because* of all the posts of people complaining. If somebody comes on here (in this subreddit in particular) and posts about how well they're doing financially they'll get dragged on and accused of bragging. There are other subreddits for those types of comments.

How many of you would consider yourselves addicted to your phones/social media?

Posted by Sufficient_Focus4174@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 121 comments

PilotC150@reddit

Nextdoor is a cesspool. It's the worst of the worst of social media. I felt so much better when I realized nothing good came from it and I deleted it. Reddit is all I use. I have Facebook on my phone but only because there's a local meteorologist who posts spectacular forecasts that I want to keep track of. I turned off notifications, though, because they started getting overly intrusive. I never got into Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, or any of that other bullshit.

When did you start feeling like a pilot?

Posted by AnnualRich1492@reddit | flying | View on Reddit | 100 comments

PilotC150@reddit

As soon as I passed my PPL checkride. When I could go to the airport and hop in a plane alone or with a friend and go somewhere without needing permission, that was the trigger.

Family reunions

My wife’s side does a family reunion every three years. Recently we’ve learned how many in that group are MAGA so she has no desire to show up anymore.

Ugggghhh. The lag on smart tv apps makes me feel like I'm using Windows 95.

I have a Samsung tv that forced me to connect it to the internet before it would let me switch to HDMI 1 to use it as a dumb tv. And their network settings were messed up so I had to call their support and get new DNS settings for it to actually connect. Needless to say I won’t ever buy a Samsung tv ever again.

Smart TVs are garbage. You need an external streaming box, either Roku Ultra or Apple TV. (I’ve never had a single good experience with a Fire TV.) I really wish they’d stop making smart TVs because it’s just a waste of money.

Obviously this is exactly what your instructor is for. The only simple tip I would give, since you don't say how many hours you have, is to stop trying to focus on everything all at once. There is a lot happening and a new pilot can't possibly do it all right away. Let your instructor focus on engine instruments. All you need to do is smoothy apply full power and keep it on the centerline. Once you're rolling and stabilized on the centerline, it's a lot easier to glance at the airspeed indicator to see when you hit your rotation speed. As you gain experience, things will slow down for you and you can start adding more tasks without getting overloaded.

Questions for commercial XC requirements

PilotC150@reddit

This is one of those things that should be pretty straightforward. And if you try to game the system and try to explain how "No really! This XC counts!", you're just asking for a DPE to end your checkride before it starts.

Passed my instrument checkride!

PilotC150@reddit

Opinions on difficulty of the Instrument really vary. I found it really easy because of the objective, systematic approach to it. Some people find it exceedingly difficult. I think many people consider PPL and CFI to be the hardest. PPL because it’s the first one, CFI because it’s so long and in-depth.

It does feel wrong, until you realize the amount of crap that you’ve acquired over the years. Eventually you need to look at things objectively and not with subjective nostalgia. That’s when you can start purging and the weight lifts off your shoulders.

My wife has Samantha and loved them as a kid. She so badly wanted our girls to get into American Girl dolls, so we ended up buying a bunch of stuff. Fortunately it was the cheaper Target-brand “Out Generation”. My girls didn’t care about them though so we’ve just recently been starting to get rid of it all.

Did your parents or in-laws gift you money to buy your home?

I got something like that through Wells Fargo for my first house. It was early 2008. Turns out that was a horrible time to buy a house.

PilotC150@reddit

I said yes, but it was actually my wife’s grandparents who gave her the money. I don’t remember how much it was. We built our house in 2013 and got a fixed 3% interest rate. PMI dropped off when we got \~20% equity and I used that savings to finish the basement. Still have 17 years left on the mortgage, and at 3% there’s no way I’m going to overpay to pay it off early.

Same here. It was something I made sure of when we were building our house. Our entire top floor consists of four bedrooms, a bathroom and a laundry room. It’s really nice to have it all close by.

IFR cancelation when entering the VFR traffic pattern

Posted by AmokaHD@reddit | flying | View on Reddit | 63 comments

PilotC150@reddit

If there's a tower at your destination airport you don't need to care about canceling IFR. They'll close your flight plan when you land. If you want to do some pattern work, just tell the tower and they'll do what they need to do with the flight plan. Canceling is only for landing at non-towered airports.

Moronic Monday

PilotC150@reddit

I think that depends where you started. If you passed your PPL checkride at 40-60 hours and immediately took a 3-4 year break, you'll probably need more than 3-4 hours to get the rust off. If you're a higher time pilot, even a few hundred hours, then that 1 hour per year off sounds a lot more accurate.

I'll throw a plug out there for Air Trek North out of KSGS. They aren't flashy, but they're good. The planes aren't new, but they're very well maintained. Every instructor I've worked with there has been great. The maintenance team is always happy to talk to students about things and answer any questions you have. As for your point number 2, KSGS is tucked right between the MSP bravo and the STP Delta so it adds a different challenge, but it's always quick to get out of it and fly east or south to get the practice area. Scheduling is completely under your own control. You have access to AircraftClubs and can schedule the plane/instructor at your convenience.

Has anyone noticed how Reddit defines a common Xennial trait as no more than a typo?

It’s actually standard behavior on the web. Multiple white spaces get collapsed to a single one. I still type two spaces even though it gets truncated.

So what are we doing for financial planning/retirement?

Posted by Background_Title_922@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 169 comments

PilotC150@reddit

We were previously with Edward Jones due to a family member working for them. We had multiple years of virtually no gains because of their investment decisions. Eventually he retired which opened the door to make it easier for us to move. We switched to Fisher Investments, who my parents used and had a good experience with. It does cost money (not "fee only") but even post-fees our portfolio has been generally beating ETFs like VOO.

I don’t know about you guys, but I cannot keep up with pop culture these days. This is how I know I’m getting old. I guess I don’t care though. I know like a few musical artists that are current but for the most part when I hear new stars names I have no idea who they are or what they do.

My first email address is older than all three of those companies. It was through the North Dakota State University system. @sendit.nodak.edu, I think. I was 10 and didn’t understand email, but I had an account somebody made for me. My first fake email was Prodigy, but that could only send to other Prodigy users at the time.

PilotC150@reddit

It happens around me all the time, But there's one road by me in particular near my house that drives me absolutely crazy. The speed limit is 55 but most of the time people are going under 50. It's a divided road, two lanes each way, but for some reason people just won't go the speed limit. It's incredibly frustrating. (I question OPs "30 miles under the speed limit" because that would be 25 in 55 or 30 in 60.)
