What is one famous movie you’ve never watched?

From a Xennial perspective, What is one famous movie you’ve never watched?
I’m wondering if the general consensus is the same set of movies among all of us.
Maybe our parents didn’t let us watch it, or maybe we were a touch too young to see it in the movies with friends at the time and just never eventually saw it. Or, maybe it’s a famous movie that came out before we were born that we had no interest in?
NindieNation@reddit
So many. Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption, Resivoir Dogs, most of the movies that people were like "oh it's so good, it'll make you FEEL" or whatever.
I did watch all the comedies of the 90s though.
kramer1980_adm@reddit
Shawshank really holds up well. Honestly one of the greatest movies of all time.
LimeSalty4092@reddit
I finally watched Shawshank for the first time last month
I thought it was a movie like last of the Mohicans,
not a social allegory regarding incarceration
So I wasn’t really excited about it. If I want to get hit over the head with social justice themed movies, I’ll turn on Netflix or any other more recently produced movie or show
I don’t need to go back to the 90s to explore this well trodden ground
Opposite-Funny-9669@reddit
Shawshank and Green Mile are about the only 2 I've seen in all these replies that I have actually seen and I'm all comedy all the time, but they are great movies. Green Mile will break your soul at the end though.
Spirited_Storage3956@reddit
I plan to rewatch Shawshank, will NOT rewatch Green Mile
Opposite-Funny-9669@reddit
i watched it the first time alone thankfully. i will never watch that movie with witnesses. i have cried less after breakups
siobhanenator@reddit
I'm with you on movies that make you feel. I'm already stressed out enough, I don't need to be doing it on purpose in my free time.
Traditional_Cat_60@reddit
Shawshank is so good. I miss having cable just because of this movie. You can watch the whole thing or tune in for any 30 stretch of the movie and you’ll enjoy it.
cellrdoor2@reddit
Shawshank holds up, even my blase 17 year old loved it.
ResponsibilityGold88@reddit
Try to make time for Shawshank. The others are “eh” but Shawshank is a masterpiece.
CuriousCat9673@reddit
Still my favorite movie to this day.

You’re not missing much, aside from a smoking hot Michelle Pfeiffer.
HipHopGrandpa@reddit
Agreed. Gratuitous violence and unrelatable characters. I’m always baffled that these types of films become championed as masterpieces.
nopester24@reddit
What???
rivrottr@reddit
I finally watched it after a whole lifetime of hype and was massively disappointed. One of the dumbest movies I’ve ever seen!
1_21-gigawatts@reddit
One word: “chainsaw”. I’ve been holding off on a rewatch because of this scene
MegaRadCoolDad@reddit
Overrated
Graywulff@reddit

PilotC150@reddit
The Goonies
Never saw it, don’t really care to, at this point.
Extension_Chart2641@reddit
I could never get into the hype around this movie. I personally didn't like it as a kid.
LimeSalty4092@reddit
The whole scene at the beginning where they break then attempt to repair the penis on the statue of David went on way way too long Including them gluing on the penis upside down, water squirting out, etc…
As an elementary school girl, the lengthy scene involving a dick joke that gets pretty vulgar was way too much
And this penis scene is within the first 15 minutes of the movie
After that, it deterred me from even continuing watching after that embarrassing scene
Also that type of humor firmly establishes it as a “guy” movie. Just too macho for me
ManateeNipples@reddit
It was a movie that was often on cable at times I was home alone with nothing else to watch, and same with neverending story. I feel like that's why so many people have so many memories of them
Sofagirrl79@reddit
I liked it as a kid but at 46 it's just kinda meh
ConsequenceIll6927@reddit
I watched it for the first time last year and was very confused as to how it was anything other than mediocre trash.
_hi_plains_drifter_@reddit
Same for me.
-piso_mojado-@reddit
People will fight me, but you’re not missing much except references. My wife loves it like I love the sandlot. I don’t get it.
ViceroyFizzlebottom@reddit
I was practically forced by my college friends--A Clockwork Orange Style--to watch this movie and The Princess Bride--both of which I never had watched before.
SunsetFarms@reddit
I don't understand the hype. I never liked it.
AndrewInMN@reddit
I’m not sure how well this movie would play for an adult that doesn’t have nostalgia for it. Maybe it would still be good, but I wouldn’t worry about not seeing it.
lovepeacefakepiano@reddit
It’s ok.
I’m not from the US but live there now and some friends were so aghast I hadn’t seen it that they set up a Goonies evening and watched it with me. I enjoyed it because they so clearly loved it, but it’s very much a kid’s movie IMO. I don’t get the hype. But one of them still calls it his favourite movie of all times.
Shoddy-Definition-13@reddit
Can confirm, as the only member of my friend group with 0 nostalgia, it does not stand up to the hype when viewed for the first time as an adult.
meenie@reddit
My wife had never seen it so we watched a couple months ago. She didn't really care for it lol. It did not live up to the hype I put on it, even for me haha.
cellrdoor2@reddit
I have nostalgia for it and at sill felt a bit annoyed at how much screaming there was in the movie. The adventure part of it holds up IMO though.
el_pinko_grande@reddit
Having not seen it until I was an adult myself, it was awful.
fuelvolts@reddit
Same. I’m 1984, so barely a xennial. Maybe that’s why.

The Matrix.

SmallRocks@reddit
You should give it a shot when you have nothing else going on!
I’m not saying I think I you’ll love, I’m not saying it will be your most epic favorite movie. However, you may be surprised.

cellrdoor2@reddit
How? I didn’t even try to see this, it was just pushed on us constantly every holiday season.
After_Preference_885@reddit
I never even heard of it until I was an adult and moved to the Midwest. It was never on TV when I was a kid.
LimeSalty4092@reddit
It started gaining traction in the late 90s. I co sign that it wasn’t on TV when we were kids
royv98@reddit
That’s like trying to avoid Mariah every holiday season. Lmao
Phoniceau@reddit
Same. Tried to watch it once on purpose and didn’t get in to it… did not finish.
Imaginary-Oil-9984@reddit
Not missing a thing. I don’t know how this film is people’s favorite Christmas movie.
imnottheoneipromise@reddit
Same. Never saw it, never plan to.
BinocularDisparity@reddit
This is almost impressive, I feel like it can’t be avoided without effort for that long if only for its constant position in Christmas culture.

Rocky Horror
wmposl70@reddit
I don't really like the movie, but it sure was a blast to go see it late at night with all the crowd participation back when I was young.
LimeSalty4092@reddit
I watched it once on tv maybe the E network in like 1999 I actually liked some of the songs but I wouldn’t watch it again
Whatever the whole live experience is not for me I just can’t deal with that level of theater kids
Thier antics and inside jokes are tiresome to me
My husband doesn’t believe me but theater kids were not so much a thing in Massachusetts growing up
I think the theater kid thing was much more of a tristate NYC Long Island , Jersey and Philly phenomenon
Up in central mass I never even heard of the movie And we didn’t have theater kids at our high school
Jupitersd2017@reddit
Same!
Lord-Sinestro@reddit
I’m sure I’m going to catch some hate for this, but Rocky Horror is better as a symbol for its time and of counterculture itself than as a film. I respect the players involved, the production of, the story of making it, etc. but I just can’t sit through more than 15 minutes of it.
It’s fascinating to a lot of people but to me it’s the classic shock for shock’s sake style. To be fair I don’t enjoy most musicals and every other attention seeking friend I’ve ever had growing up loved Rocky Horror and had multiple copies of every way it’s been produced ever. I just don’t get it. The funny part is, I enjoy that same vein of music and style with bands like My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult and Lords of Acid but just not that example.
But hey, to each their own.
prodigaldummy@reddit
It’s been a while since I last saw that, probably over 30 years (13/14 when I first saw it), and I totally agree. The music is good, but I don’t think the film will hold up anymore.
Ginger_Snaps_Back@reddit
The soundtrack is fire! 🔥
1_21-gigawatts@reddit
Good point about it being a slice in time. For the early-mid 80s it was quite edgy, definitely counter-culture.
Phoniceau@reddit
I think the culture surrounding it is what really matters, the cult following of midnight showings and audience participation makes it so classic and fun. The movie in itself is just fine.

A field trip As part of History class I believe
I walked out kinda shell shocked but being with a group of peers and friends there really wasn’t much conversation to be had
Too heavy for a large group of 15yo kids to engage in as a group
So I watched it , we never talked about it in class or among my friends at all
Unusual-Minimum9306@reddit
Same. Very couple of years I think about going for it but it always just seems like it’ll be too emotionally draining. I guess that’s the whole point. Will watch some day.
YEMolly@reddit
It is BEYOND emotionally draining. However, it is sooooo good and well done. Definitely watch it one day. Just make sure you don’t bae plans afterwards. Haha
CTMechE@reddit
That's exactly how I feel. Never actively avoided it, I always intended to see it, but when the opportunity arose I didn't want to experience such a downer. I keep saying eventually, but I'm gonna have to make it deliberate because "getting around to it" isn't working.
maggie320@reddit
We watched that in high school over a few days. Pretty much the whole class was crying.
Cashewkaas@reddit
We did that as well. Asked a couple of teachers if we could watch it in class in one sitting. They all agreed, the schedule was changed so we could keep the same classroom occupied for a couple of hours.
Never seen a class of teenagers be so quiet for so long.
taraky97@reddit
I saw this in the theater. When it was over it was silent and we all filed out without talking. Side story: I saw this at an armed forces theater in Germany so it was something everyone in the room was hyper familiar with already.
jrod259@reddit
We did too, in history. Teacher was the football coach. Pretty surreal seeing the big, bad coach with tears rolling down his face
The_Long_Blank_Stare@reddit
I’ve not seen this one in its entirety either, but man, the clip where he was talking about the value of his belongings in terms of the human lives he could have saved, and how he could have done more…that clip leveled me.
HearingDue2119@reddit
Our class had a field trip to see this in a theater upon release. Have not seen it since.
OhTheHueManatee@reddit
Same. I'm sure it's great but I have no need to be that profoundly sad.
Substantial_Leg6852@reddit
My Oma (Dutch) saw it and said that it was very accurate.
I have also never seen it because I still see the emotions on her face describing it and the time.
I guess I should one of these days.
smokiechick@reddit
My senior year, it became required to watch and write a response. They showed it on my 18th birthday and Mom and I played hookie to go to the Philadelphia art museum. I saw Avatar in 3D on about two hits of good acid, and it was an incredibly good time... I couldn't tell where the movie ended and my imagination began. The lines had fully blurred for me.
It was putting down a tiny amount of snow as we left the theater, it was a beautiful and peaceful moment I'll never forget. The salt they had spread on the sidewalk was glittering in the lamp light like multicolored beacons.
chesterberry@reddit
Man, I love the snow on acid. So beautiful.
armchair_viking@reddit
I don’t care for it on a TV, but in 3d on a big screen it was really awesome. It’s all about the visuals and the spectacle. The story is just meh
NYGiants181@reddit
What even is the story?
LtPowers@reddit
More seriously, the plot goeth thusly:
NYGiants181@reddit
Wow OK seems cool. How does the rogue jarhead get away from his controlling human to actually go rogue?
LtPowers@reddit
He is the human controlling the Avatar. They have pods where they leave their bodies while their minds are projected into the Avatars' brains.
NYGiants181@reddit
Ohhhh ok.
So why doesn’t someone just pull him of out the pod to stop the “rogue” situation?
LtPowers@reddit

taraky97@reddit
Same.
_buffy_summers@reddit
One of my siblings has seen it, and the sequels. She talks about how great it is. But she's also the person who will tell me to watch a movie with her, then pause it for an hour while she's on the phone and I'm just sitting and waiting for her to hang up. So it's likely that she saw it in three-minute increments and thinks it's great, but it's awful.

That’s funny, because for a while my answer would’ve been Titanic. Was a huuuuge James Cameron fan growing up but absolutely refused to see Titanic. Thought it was a bit of a sell-out, somehow. I was happily in the seats for Avatar, though, and from the opening scene I was reminded of everything I loved about the guy and felt terrible that I had forsaken him so readily.
Went ahead and watched Titanic not too long after that. It was ok.

I probably never would have seen it, but I went to the drive in to see the other movie that night (they always show two.) So I sat through Harry Potter: The Prisoner of Azkaban. And after that I was like omg I have to see the first 2. Then I saw every one after that. Not in theaters but I saw them. Now I have the whole collection.
YEMolly@reddit
I also saw HP at the drive in! Had zero desire to watch it. Only saw it b/c it was playing at the drive in and we could drink & smoke blunts. 😂 But I left totally obsessed!!!
BusinessYou1657@reddit
Not missing much. I watched the first one to see what the hype was about. It sucked. Thought the book might be better. Within chapters I realised this lazy hack can’t write and I decided not to torture myself.
Caught the second one on television and it sucked too. Skipped the third one because there was no need and then a friend was watching the fourth one and I sat down for a minute and there was this cool scene. Everyone was going to the fifth one and I thought, “why not, maybe it had a cool scene too”, but I fell asleep, so I’ll never know.
So, I decided I hated Harry Potter and would never bother again. The sixth one was out for a while, and I had no desire to watch, but a friend kept pestering me because “this is the one where it gets good”. Whatever, I’ll watch it. It was ass.
By the way, what the fuck is wrong with Harry Potter fans? They’ll watch/read five horrible stories because it gets god later? You know where Star Wars gets good? The first one.
I’ll never watch the rest, even after hearing the same argument that it “gets good” by the seventh one. Complete waste of time. The cast is really good. Also, fuck J.K. Rowling.
flamingknifepenis@reddit
I never saw / read them until a few years ago but, even as someone who’s now a fan, this is pretty accurate. I ended up reading them all to my wife when she got a severe concussion and wasn’t supposed to do anything but lay in a dark room for weeks — no TV, no games, no phone, no reading … nothing. Just lay in the dark and try not to go crazy with no stimulation.
The first two books are pretty awful when taken outside of the amber tinted glasses of nostalgia. The characters are pretty silly, the plots are generic, and the “action” scenes are some of the worst I’ve ever read. On top of that, she ends up wasting a chapter or two of the first few re-setting everything up as if people were going to read it who hadn’t read the ones before.
Truman Capote once said about Jack Kerouac that “That’s not writing, thats called typing.” I can’t say as I agree with him on Kerouac, but I definitely agree about at least those first two Harry Potter books. The third one was the first time it felt like there was a point to any of it, nonetheless a coherent story.
I guess the upside is that those first books are short enough that if one really wanted to they could breeze through them in an afternoon? I think they’re a bit of a “you had to be there” kind of thing
NemaCat@reddit
I went my whole life without watching a single second of Star Wars until last year, I sat down with my husband and we watched them all in chronological order, not order of release.

Other example: I watched Empire Strikes Back before Star Wars. By the time I saw the original on TV, which was when they were re-doing the special editions, 14 year old me was like "wtf is this piece of shit movie and why was it popular?"
dharmachile@reddit
You don’t watch any movies in black and white, either?
happy_snowy_owl@reddit
You don't watch silent films?
SELECTaerial@reddit
You don’t want drawings on papyrus?
SELECTaerial@reddit
Well I could agree with you, but then we’d both be wrong ;) lol
No but I get it. Makes sense.
PeterPunksNip@reddit
What took me out of the movie was it's horrible soundtrack (not the classical bits, but the abysmal atonal synth beeps boops). I saw it on tv and rushed to mute those parts.
ST_Lawson@reddit
I've seen 2001 a couple of times, but the first time I tried to watch it, I fell asleep about halfway through. It's a good movie, and I'm a big sci-fi fan, but it does kinda drag a bit at times.
talentpun@reddit
You really have to put yourself in the shoes of someone watching it the year it was released. No one had seen special effects like that in a movie before; it was released before the earth had even been photographed and they had to invent every derail.
The sheer spectacle probably helped overcome its pace.
1_21-gigawatts@reddit
The special effects are still good today. Not Avatar-level but still good. Unlike Star Wars - A New Hope or ST:TOS. Also the number of memes and tropes from 2001 too
ST_Lawson@reddit
Absolutely. It came out in '68 and if you look around at what other sci-fi looked like back then, 2001 was revolutionary.
SELECTaerial@reddit
Yea that scene where the guy’s jogging in circles in the ship is a great example of practical effects done really well
greatswordstudios@reddit
Star Wars changed film editing forever, something it never gets credit for. Even Jaws, which came out in 75, moves shockingly slowly.
Ok-Brick6831@reddit
Um. Get out of my head.
Thats literally my same experience (except the Sopranos - didn’t have HBO, never got around to streaming it).
ElPeroTonteria@reddit
Watched Sopranos it in its entirety last year bc I’d never seen it… I couldn’t tell if they were poking fun at how fucking stupid American Italians act, or if it was trying to be serious…
happy_snowy_owl@reddit
They are serious and it's spot on.
t. grew up on LI, but northern NJ is similar.
ElPeroTonteria@reddit
Well yes. I understand… but it’s not flattering in any way to the mob
happy_snowy_owl@reddit
Having worked for multiple people who were trying to get made...
It is more than flattering to them.
ElPeroTonteria@reddit
I think there’s a lot to be said about that (Mexican crime families) and the similarities between Itallian crime families 100yrs ago, or frankly the Irish before that even…
happy_snowy_owl@reddit
It's easy to forget in 2026 that 30 years ago, Italians weren't seen as white. And especially not in their immigration wave in the 1920s-1950s.
So they had to mostly work labor jobs and many people turned to organized crime for a combination of economic opportunity and protection from nativists and other ethnic groups.
There's also the similar southern European, Catholic culture roots, albeit Mexico diverges here with significantly more American Indian influence.
ElPeroTonteria@reddit
It was the Spanish, The Irish, The Scots before the Italians … it’s just the “Mexicans” in this current timeline
Traditional Italian cooking didn’t even include tomatoes until about 500 yrs ago bc there were no tomatoes in Italy until after they “discovered” the Americas
happy_snowy_owl@reddit
Right... 500 years is a long time. My point being is that when immigrants came to the 'new world,' they had to make due with what was cheap and abundant.

I think the problem is I saw all tbose great movies you listed BEFORE watching the Godfather. I think if I had watched that first maybe I wouldn't rather do anything other than watch the godfather.

I always found it boring too until more recently. I sat and watched the first two and was blown away. So many legends in their prime in the cast.
Moons_of_Moons@reddit
Yooo. TWBB is insane.
At the end I was like.. "what?..."
vlazuvius@reddit
I finally watched it last year and was surprised just how much of that movie’s dialogue has made it into our cultural vocabulary.
CTMechE@reddit
^ This is exactly what I tell people who haven't seen it. I don't expect them to be a fan of it, but to appreciate how massively influential it is, culturally and artistically.
ptindaho@reddit
In fairness, the 1st 2 are some of the greatest American cinema of all time, imo.
CTMechE@reddit
I agree but I get that as a middle aged white man, it's a bit of a cliche. My mother likes them too but a decent percentage of women kinda eyeroll at how much they are revered, so I try not to oversell it to younger people, and instead focus on the influence and significance.
Shaved_Caterpillar@reddit

Braveheart
AdjunctFunktopus@reddit
In high school, my U.S. history teacher and euro history teacher were buddies. They’d gone to Braveheart together and the euro history teacher had walked out.
The reason the story came up was because they had just gone to The Patriot together and the I.S. history teacher returned the favor.
Shaved_Caterpillar@reddit
This is AMAZING
happy_snowy_owl@reddit
They're basically the same movie. I swear that Braveheart is only more popular / higher regarded because of people's unfamiliarity with the source material.
armchair_viking@reddit
I think the acting is overall better, and the characters are more fun.
Jupitersd2017@reddit
Agreed and the horses are phenomenal and the battles are as well, we’ve come a long way since then but at the time it was pretty impressive
KrAEGNET@reddit
and the soundtrack and scenery
Kriegerian@reddit
Yeah, they’re mostly the same movie with the same amount of respect for history. Mel Gibson plays a superhero who butchers the English, there’s a shitton of bloody violence, some of the supporting cast is good. The Patriot has a happy ending and Braveheart doesn’t, that’s the only real difference.
ConsequenceIll6927@reddit
The Patriot is somewhat rooted in factual history. It's loosely based around Brigadier General Francis Marion - called "The Swamp Fox" - who often engaged in guerilla warfare on British troops and supply lines in the South. They just changed the name and created a fictional story set during the American Revolution.
whistleridge@reddit
Braveheart came out a couple of years before the Patriot.
AdjunctFunktopus@reddit
Yup. They had gone 5 years earlier.
whistleridge@reddit
Sorry I originally read that as saying they went to the Patriot first. Now I realize you’re saying they walked out of both.
happy_snowy_owl@reddit
I rewatched this recently and hot take: It's a mediocre film with bad writing and a lot of instances where characters act contrary to their personality and motives.
Kriegerian@reddit
It was always a bad movie, especially if you have the tiniest amount of respect for history. Brendan Gleeson and a couple of the other actors give good performances, plus the castle sets look good, but everything else is really bad.

I've seen them. At least a couple of them. And did not enjoy. It was fine when the whole franchise was '80s nostalgia, but when they were re-released in the mid-'90s and it was just assumed everyone loved Star Wars, that's when I really started to actively dislike it.

The Princess Bride. It just never looked interesting to me as a kid.
ninetentacles@reddit
I hated it as a kid because somehow it was always pushed on me when I was somewhere else, the weather was perfectly good, and I just wanted to be outside playing.
As an adult, when I could choose when to watch it? Loved it, and then introduced it to a friend who'd never seen it as a kid. Now, if I find out you haven't seen it...you're watching it.

Barely a Christmas movie, Christmas is just the backdrop for the final half hour. If you like older films, give it a try, I did not see it until and adult and I absolutely love it, so does the family.
Old_Association6332@reddit
Honestly? It'd be easier to list the famous movies I have watched. I haven't watched so many of them. I don't know why.

I’ve never seen The Craft. I have the DVD (a friend gave it to me), just never got around to it.

Most films from before I was born I haven't watched. I've seen some, but only the ones that interested me.
Films I've not watched: Casablanca, Gone With the Wins, It's A Wonderful Life, Jane Eyre, Ben Hur, Citizen Kane, 2001. There's more but these are the bigger ones.
Ones that I watched: The Universal Monster films (Dracula, Bride of Franken, etc), Godzilla, King Kong, Planet of the Apes, Psycho, The Birds, Godfather.

Only one movie out of these that I've watched. It's a Wonderful Life, didn't see it until I was an adult but now it's my favorite Christmas movie.

I never saw the Never Ending Story until last year.
Like half of us, I was too young to see it in theaters. None of my friends liked it enough to have a tape. It never ran on broadcast TV that I can remember. I was not a fan of the genre to have gone out and rented it. I finally watched it based on how many people seem to love it.
It was decent. Would probably have enjoyed it, be scared by it, if I had watched it at a younger age.

The goonies, and top gun. I tried really hard to never watch Titanic, but it was on a long flight, large screen at the front of plane and it was the only entertainment. There was no escaping it but I made sure to look disinterested and say "the boat sinks" when anyone tried to talk to me during the flight. Significantly damaged my street cred.

I still have seen the Hobbit movies. Which is weird, because I loved Tolkien when I was younger, and geeked out to the Lord of the Rings movies pretty hard. But I just thought the idea of stretching a short book into three films, with the padding that must have occurred to get it there, is silly.

I haven't seen most of them. I am not into movies, struggle to sit through them, find most predictable and my mind wanders off during. Like, at the time of my answering, out of the comments, the only ones I've seen are "Titantic" and "Mean Girls," and that's partially because they came/come on TV a ton.
