What is 1 thing you miss from the 90s/early 2000s?

Late 90s I shared a house with a great friend and we often went down to Blockies on a Friday night to look for comedically terrible Troma films and wonderful oddities like Delicatessen. And also much procurement of tubs of ice-cream, popcorn, coke, pizza. A super way to start the weekend.

Having that degree certificate isn't an automatic passport to higher wages. It's a reminder to yourself that you've used those university years to gain knowledge about ideas and approaches for thinking that give you a greater overall potential than someone who hasn't had that opportunity. Granted that I know nothing about you or your current job role, it's up to you to use that potential in your current role by thinking more broadly beyond your immediate area of influence or responsibility, thinking ahead strategically, always be learning/developing, mentoring your colleagues and, as a result, behaving in a way that aligns with where you want to be for the next step in your career. The increase in earnings will come as a side-effect.

What were the mid-late 90s and the early 2000s like in the UK?

Started university in 1993, first contact with the internet using command-line email, gopher and FTP. First saw the fledgling WWW soon after, using the graphical Mosaic browser, and realised this was going to be amazing. So many moments like that in the 90s. Broadband availability was another such moment.

I had a mini diary, always carried in my back pocket, which was my life. It contained phone numbers, reminders, gig dates and various appointments. Once a year I'd get a new one and studiously copy all the phone numbers into it.

When at university in Coventry in 94 (pre Internet map services) I decided to cycle to Birmingham to see my mate. Planning the journey involved going to the campus library and photocopying a couple of pages from a map, which I stuck together with sellotape. (Unfortunately I'd offset the two pages slightly and joined up two different roads and so ended up getting lost somewhere round Balsall Common. Was just one of those things.)

Get a cat and allow it to sleep on the bed. Feed the cat soon after the alarm goes off and the cat will ENSURE that going back to sleep after the alarm has gone off is an impossibility. This can backfire if you wake up too early and allow the cat to notice you are awake.

While the company is in the tech sector and I was studying a tech-adjacent topic, they were keen to take on anyone who could show an aptitude for learning, flexibility and had potential, including future leadership potential. The cohort I started with studied sciences, history, finance, languages and other subjects, so having a degree in a particular subject wasn't important. The positions were all UK-based but that didn't rule out travel or relocation to other countries later on.

Employers visit the UK universities on the so-called milk-round,. They give presentations to still-studying final-year students and invite them to apply for the employers graduate programme, so that is one way to land a reasonably secure job with progression built-in. They make you sweat for it though! I applied to a large US company after being attracted to their milk-round presentation evening by the free beer on offer. After signing up I did an initial screening interview, an exam-conditions aptitude test, a two-day assessment centre (with overnight stay) involving a variety of individual exercises and group-based challenges, then a final interview. Fortunately I got through it successfully and so knew I had a job waiting for me as long as I didn't completely fluff my final university exams (which I didn't). It also avoided having to go back home to live with my parents again, which, while I love my parents, would have been such a come-down after the slightly unreal and mind-expanding university experience.

We had a bloke show up at a corporate away-day to address about 300 of us about something motivational. It was patronizing and vacuous and I was overjoyed when the post-address space that was clearly intended to be filled with grateful applause was instead filled with a chilly and uncomfortable silence. My heart sang.

Am 52, Audi A4 S-Line, ex-demonstrator, bought outright in 2014 for £16K (reduced from a probably overpriced 24K with some haggling), has needed new aircon this year for around 1.5K, brake calipers and disks, other than that just usual tyres, service. Plan to run it into the ground so likely another 10 years if I'm careful, then whatever electric marvels are available.

It s an important role: helping others avoid the time-consuming and expensive mistakes that either you made or you saw others make. I'm 51 and in a similar position. Sometimes I feel I am not producing much that is tangible but I realized that I'm (probably) worth the money as the hand on the rudder. I do suffer continually from imposter syndrome, especially when working with the younger engineers and architects who have astonishing expertise, although not across the broad range of areas that I have, simply because I've been at it for a lot longer than they have.

Years ago I had a train journey for work that started standing in a hellishly overcrowded noisy end-of-carriage vestibule next to a stinky toilet. I needed to get some work done so I phoned my manager and asked if I could upgrade to first class. The answer was "yes" and I was swiftly transported into another world, with quietness, air-conditioning and a broad comfortable seat. Sitting opposite me was a lovely lady with her miniature dachshund for who she had also purchased a seat. The contrast was stark.

On Saturday I collected a three-legged ex-stray cat from the vet who had removed the problematic leg last week and who has been looking after him since. The cat seemed to be having problems last night (rapid breathing, listless) so took him to our local vet at midnight. Antibiotics administered, cat seems to be OK and is an absolute delight. I now need another weekend to recover.
