What's your favourite song of all time and why? You can only pick one

Mine is Stardust - Music sounds better with you
My mum used to put it on when she was cleaning and I was 9 and would dance along to it. I've always listened to it but when I had it on in the car and my son said to me 'I love this song' and we decided that's our song that we sing and dance along to, it cemented it for me.
My husband doesn't like that style of music at all but even he loves it. It reminds me of summer, being happy and good times.

Made all the more bittersweet by the fact that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards managed to steal all the royalties from the song for decades despite having nothing to do with it.

This, and the Andrew Oldham Orchestral version of The Last Time by the Rolling Stones. Absolute bangers both of 'em.

I love how the songs melody literally sounds bittersweet, they nailed it.

The entire Urban Hymns album is a masterpiece! I've seen Richard Ashcroft 3 times now (sadly not wirh The Verve) and he was amazing, great crowd and great music.

Time by Pink Floyd. The lyrics sum up life and the melody grabs the heart.
Fit_Adhesiveness7307@reddit
Dammit just listened to this and the lyrics really pierced my heart. It applies to me a little too closely. I love the melody too so it’s definitely added to my library now.
One reason I listen to music is to express and let out my emotions. I’m usually quite numbed by my meds but music allows me to feel again, whether good or bad emotions. So this song works amazingly, I really felt the extreme regret that I normally suppress.

Give Comfortably Numb a listen too. It’s my favourite.
Charming-Clock-3651@reddit
In particular, the pulse version of comfortably numb is much better than the 'original'
CarpetGripperRod@reddit
I just went with "Wish you were here". But, yeah-- no one is wrong picking a Floyd track!

This was a close second to Comfortably Numb for me. To be honest its probably sharing the number 1 spot.

The lyrics to this song are poetry, and as you get older you realise so unbelievably true. Perfection.

And then one day you find. Ten years have got behind you. No one told you when to run. You missed the starting gun.
SailAwayMatey@reddit
When the solo kicks in 😌...Ive heard that song so many times and I still get a chill when I hear it. It's one of my favorite solos I've ever heard.
People go on about shredding and all that but hands down, some of the best solos are the simplest and Time is a perfect example of how much something so simple can be just perfect.

Tainted Obligation by the Community Trolls
The 'band' is really Michael Stipe and Matthew Sweet. It was recorded circa 1983 and has beautiful harmonies which sometimes twine around each other; a simple, repeating guitar motif, and an aching melody. The roughness of the recording - I think it's basically a demo recording - only adds to the allure.

Mylène Farmer: Agnus Dei
I found the album (l'autre) in 1995 at a swiss library. I was 11. The cover did it.
The song has been instrumental in me falling in love with synths, being a lifelong fan of Mylène Farmer, liking melancholic lyrics and sounds. Music by Laurent Boutonnat, lyrics by Mylène Farmer.

Can't pick one favourite but your song drives me insane! That repeated guitar lick ALL the way through.....
Anyway, I'm sure you'd hate all my music :) Its only opinions!
SpaceTimeCapsule89@reddit (OP)
I'm sure I wouldn't hate the songs you like. My favourite genre is electronic dance music so daft punk, fat boy slim, empire of the sun etc but I also like rap, country and rock as well. The only genre I can't stand is heavy metal
Meeple_person@reddit
I love EDM too but there's something about Daft Punk and Fat Boy Slim that grates. Maybe its because it was quite overplayed during the day..... I mean For an Angel by PVD is a classic and repetitive but isn't grating..... to me anyway :)
SpaceTimeCapsule89@reddit (OP)
See I'm one of those people that finds a song or tune and listens to it over and over so repetitive sounds and tunes are no problem for me at all and what I prefer. If the beat and sound is good, that's me into it. I realise this isn't a popular way of listening to music, people like to relate and find emotion in music but for me, I like music that finds a sound that makes me feel happy and repeats that sound that makes me feel happy. It's weird I know 😂
Meeple_person@reddit
Yeah I'm very much the other way. In fact if I find a new song I really like I ration myself listening to it because I don't want to get bored of it...

Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy. It’s the instrumental parts for me. Played loud it’s quite ‘sweeping’.

Belinda Carlisle (We Want) The Same Thing. When it was released, the song wasn't very popular, but I've been hearing it played a lot on the radio lately.
Why is it my favourite? Because it reminds me of being a child, seated on the living room floor, plugged into headphones and just having a good time.
It also reminds me of a dear friend who moved away and who I've lost contact with.

I love Glen Campbell. My go to album for the last few years is, Meet Glen Campbell. His version of "Grow Old With Me", written by John Lennon, is the most beautiful love song. It was inches away from being my first dance at my wedding.

I used to date a Wichita lineman about 15 years ago. He was a right bellend. He bought drinks for everyone and dinner and then expected people to be his hangars on - his entourage but would get plastered and start fights with the friends that did hang round . Wonder where Rodders went.

The intro song to Steve Wright's radio programme on radio one. It's fab!
Gazcobain@reddit
Great song.
BobBobBobBobBobDave@reddit
Beautiful song.
One of my favourite facts about it is that it is kind of "unfinished", which I think helps make it so unworldly and intriguing.
Jimmy Webb, the writer, came up with and it and really liked it, and wanted Glen Campbell to sing it, so he sent Campbell a really quick and dirty version to see if he was interested. He planned to go back to the song and write more verses if Campbell wanted to record it.
Glen Campbell loved it so much he went ahead and took it as it was. Next time Jimmy Webb saw him, he asked "Did you like the song?"and Campbell said yes, and he liked it so much he had already gone into the studio and recorded it!
Disastrous_Fill_5566@reddit
I think that might be part of its "leave you wanting more" quality. It's so short, yet needs nothing more. A bit like The Beach Boys' In My Room.

One of my favourites ever, I’m not a huge Smiths fan but love this. Have you heard El Hijo Soy by Mexrissey? Sadly there’s no great recordings of it online, but it has two improvements over the original: Morrissey isn’t on it, and it’s got mariachi trumpet.

Might be an unpopular opinion, but I thought it was actually better than the Smiths' original.
A bit more polished, but not so much that it sounds Holywood-sanitized or anything. The discordant tune and slightly annoyed echoey voice is still there, but the chorus is incredible.

Beat Dis by Bomb the Bass.
I was only 7 when it came out but even then I knew it was fresh exciting and it got me interested in dance music. I liked the stuff that crossed over at the time like 808 State and KLF but it wasn't until I got into The Prodigy and hardcore rave scene via rave tapes passed around school I got an understanding of people making tunes out of other tunes and songs, and I became interested in genres with breakbeats: jungle, drum & bass, hip hop, trip hop, future jazz, big beat, tech-breaks, south coast breaks, nu skool breaks.

Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet, by Gavin Bryars. An amazing, mesmerising and emotional journey that just builds and builds.
apaperweightcat@reddit
This is such a difficult question but whenever somebody asks this the first song I go to is Madness by Muse, so I’ve decided it’s that one.
I think it hits really well for me because it was one of the first songs I was really obsessed with, and it was also the first time I’d been excited to go and see a band perform a particular song.

The Whole Of the Moon by The Waterboys.
Just a brilliant song about being totally bowled over by someone brilliant and kind of being in awe of them, and a little bit jealous.
Appropriate_Math_136@reddit
Pagan Place or The Pan Within are even better!

Yes, that's pretty much a perfect song. Fisherman's Blues is also a contender for me. Always puts a lump in my throat.

You Can Call Me Al by Paul Simon. My dad loved the Graceland album and wore the tape out, I’ve loved listening, dancing and singing along to that song my whole life.

Probably Fix You Coldplay.
Nothing fancy, I just never skip it. It’s one of those songs that somehow fits whatever mood I’m in. Heard it loads over the years but it still hits the same, especially the ending.
Not even sure why exactly, it just stuck with me. Those ones always end up being your favourite lol
MattGSJ@reddit
I’m loving all the songs in this thread but nothing beats your description of the reasons why you love this song.
I’ve always loved it because of its Daft Punk links but it’s just gone up in my world thanks to what it means to you.

Fever Ray - I'm Not Done (Still Not Done Mix)
Really hard to pick a favourite Fever Ray song because I adore most of them, but the mix of I'm Not Done slightly edges the rest out for how it improves my mood when I listen to it. It helps me feel better, sometimes you just need something to give your blood a little boost.

I love Fever Ray! Saw them live in Manchester a couple of years back and it was sick, so great to see fem and nb people being their weird selves and everyone else loving it

Love is in the Air by John Paul Young. In 1978 I bought an Austin 1300 as my first car. Went to Halfords and bought a Car Radio and Speakers. in-thesuburbs-i@reddit
That album is something special. I got into his music when I was in a dark place, and it’s only now in hindsight that I think the reason was that the whole album sounds like how depression feels. The muted mixing, the massive reverb that makes everything sound cavernous, ugh it’s so good.
I’m sure you’ve already seen it but his performance of End of the Affair on Jools Holland is unreal. His shouting into the guitar pickups gives me chills every time.
Plague_Robbery@reddit
Absolutely, I almost linked to that very performance on YouTube but if anyone is interested enough to look up the song, it is usual the first result.

A DJ played it at the end of the night around '92 and it hit me like a thunderbolt. So much emotion in a song. I asked the DJ who it was and forgot by morning (I was hammered).
The next day I went round record shops asking for a jazz tune with some french singing on it, by someone I thought was called Ronald Layman 🤣 In one shop the owner says "I think you mean this by Ramsey Lewis", played the first few seconds and I was like YES. He only had it on CD so I bought it (my first CD purchase) and found it on vinyl a year or so later.
There's a 4Hero version which is great but the original is still the best.
