What's your favourite old primary school hymn/banger?
Posted by StarSpotter74@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 282 comments
Feeling nostalgic for the late 80s and sitting cross legged on a hard, cold wooden floor belting out hymns. I'm convinced primary school singing is why we're so good at it as a nation. So, what's your favourite?
I know we all laughed at "I was hungry and NAKED, were you there, were you there"
I love "Here I Am, Lord", "Lord of the Dance", "Shine Jesus Shine" (don't forget the claps) and "One More Step Along the World I Go". They'll often be put onto a playlist when I'm a few wines deep.
So, as it's the holiest of days in the Christian calendar, what's your favourite assembly/hymns banger?
Whole-Strawberry3281@reddit
Anyone else have the Mr cow banger as a treat?

My primary school teacher, Mrs Wells was a bit of a hippy (that's what we all loved about her), so we got songs like 'Sing' by the Carpenters and 'Streets Of London' by Ralph Mctell thrown into the mix.
The whole school used to like 'Hand Me Down My Silver Trumpet' for some reason, that was always a favourite. Although I never really liked it myself... Too many major chords.

Don’t build your house on the sandy land, don’t build it too near the shore. Well it might look kinda nice but you’ll have to build it twice

I still miss belting out the Welsh national anthem. Truly one of the greatest songs ever and an absolute banger. So many lil mfs in my primary school were absolutely fantastic singers too, everyone could do teh harmonies, it was awesome.
mostly_kittens@reddit
This morning I woke up with a tune in my head, after a few minutes I realised it was ‘Morning has broken’ I’m fifty years old.
DreadLifter@reddit
I was starting to wonder if I'd images singing that at school in the 80's. Good to know I didn't. Love Cat Stevens version as an adult.
BoomalakkaWee@reddit
There were no hymn-books at my primary school (because we weren't fluent enough readers to use them) so you had to pick up the words from the kids immediately around you. We all sang "Morning has broken - lagathus morning, Blackbird has spoken - lagathus bird..."
Going by the context, five-year-old me supposed that "lagathus" was another word for "beautiful".

not a hymn but, does anyone remember singing this???
"We're going this way, that way, forwards, backwards over the Irish seaaaa, a bottle of rum to warm my tum and that's the life for meeeee"
StarSpotter74@reddit (OP)
Of course, complete with moving your body this way that way.
We sang a lot, I mean an unhealthy amount of sea shanties in the late 80s too

Sing Hosanna to the King OF Kings Sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna, sing Hosanna to the king (thick kids who can't remember where the hymn ends continue to sing but quickly realise that there's only a handful of them singing so they start loudly but end quietly and embarrassed)... OF KIngsss

In my school, kids sang the extra 'of Kings' deliberately to piss the teachers off

I did have lord of the dance for my wedding. Some people thought it was inappropriate (I’m not religious so can’t tell you why) but I love it because it’s such an upbeat hymn

I remember watching something years ago about some American Christians who said it was against their belief to dance. Maybe they were Amish, I can't remember. That HEARTS ON FIRE bit with the descending bass line is genuinely great songwriting. The teacher who played piano at our school used to bang that tune out twice as hard as the others. I was surprised to learn it was only written in 1987, it must have been a new release when I started school.

Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and far away!
FireWhiskey5000@reddit
Lord of the Dance was GOATed. But the best was we did this one every now and then called “when a knight won his spurs” (maybe it had a proper name) in it the teacher is telling about medieval times but has to keep stopping to shout at misbehaving children.
When a knight won his spurs, in the stories of old.
It was - FACE THE FRONT DAVID BRIGGS, WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN TOLD!?
With a shield on his arm, and a lance on his - HEY! IS THAT A BALL I CAN SEE?? PUT IT AWAY.
(I can’t remember any more lyrics. I’m surprised I can remember these)
Oilfreeeggs@reddit
I remember this really depressing hymn . It went
Lead like a lamb to the slaughter In silence and shame There on your back your carried the world Something something about pain
Bleeding dying , bleeding dying ( then it gets a bit upbeat) He’s alive , he’s alive He has risen And the power and the glory is given, Jesus to youuuuuuuuuuuuu
AromaticVacation3077@reddit
I used to like one that went 'Heaven is a wonderful plaaaaaace, filled with glory and graaaaaace'. It was one of those songs where you split into two groups with different parts. I LOVED that kind of thing when I was a child.
Jonny7421@reddit
In my Catholic church popular ones were :
"Follow me, follow me" pretty catchy and upbeat
"Gloria, In excelsis Deo." It has that descending pattern that is fun to sing.

I can't remember the song.. but I used to change the lyrics and sing "love is a thing like a turd on a string" The music teacher once slammed down on the piano and shouted "who's singing that?!"
I chuckled.

I can’t remember the majority of the words from it but our school music teacher wrote lyrics to the Match Of The Day theme song which we had to sing every assembly. That was a bit of a banger!!!
4x6x8@reddit
This was a thing in the 80s. I remember the lyrics having had the drilled into me.
“To the tune of Match of the day”
Why don’t you put your trust in Jesus And ask him to come in He saw your needs from up in heaven And died to save your sins Why don’t you take Him as your father And let him hold your hand… He will strengthen guide and keep you Till you reached the promised land

We used to have chapel every morning at school. I remember while singing All Things Bright and Beautiful... in the second line All Creatures Great and Small.. we would all scream them word CREATURES like a drunken rugby team and return to little angels for the rest of the song. It drove Father Nial nuts.
But the absolute Banger was Rock of Ages. The Headmaster, who was the most Welsh person in the whole history of humankind and a crazy Presbyterian among us delinquent Catholic Heathens insisted on this huge hymn to be roared out before the days ambitions to educate us were catalysed... Interestingly, I'll leave this here for a titter.... Rock of Ages was written in the 1770s by the Calvinist Augustus Toplady.
