solid in a plane is very different from solid on a PC. it still sounds like you’re listening over a car radio in the plane - I used my a20s in a discord call while mowing the lawn as a bit once and got made fun of for my xbox 360 mic lol. there’s just a big difference between actually good audio quality and “sounds fine” in one of the worst noise/vibration/harshness environments people experience (a GA plane lol)

funny because your listed counterexamples were as far from the truth as possible (and didn't include some of the capabilities of the cirrus - you know what I'm referring to), I think you just have a worse grip on the market than you think

if you own and operate an aztec, even a free one, you qualify as rich lol I don't understand why people treat "rich" as some dirty word they try to avoid. I'll say it: I'm rich. I make 80k/yr and I'm 27, I make well above the median income in the US, I'm rich and life is good. be better once I'm richer tho :\^)

if you're flying domestically, sure. same way it's trivial in a car (just don't drive like a dumbass or in a car with expired plates or etc). shoutout to that crash that the pilots freaked out and threw their backpack with drugs into a bush, someone saw and said "huh that's weird" and they got caught. if they'd just played it cool they would've never been searched. lesson learned for all of us on how to handle this situation :\^)

I suppose if you interpret "cirrus pilot" as an insult, it's an ad hominem. it doesn't need to be completely unrelated to the argument in order to be an ad hominem, it just needs to be a character/motive/other attribute attack, rather than arguing vs the argument itself ... but my comments are essentially arguing that 'cirrus pilot' is NOT an insult (or should not be, at least), so fair: my comment is just dumb and classic le redditor "actually that's a fallacy" lol. point given

what? they definitely do not cost more. if you're comparing new vs used maybe... plus the operating cost of a "twin tuboprop or early generation small jet" is going to be absurdly higher than a naturally aspirated piston twin, too, so of course they have more performance lol. bad argument

> If you make 100k a year, that 1500 hours if you worked on it full time would cost approx 75k of your labor. sure, and time IS money, but not really. not in that way. you aren't actually paying opportunity cost for the time spent building like that. building the plane isn't a chore you need to complete, it's the whole point of the damn thing, it IS the hobby. you aren't taking time out of your work day to do it, you're taking time out of your other hobbies. your point that it's a shitload of time and effort is definitely true. but you can't say "I make 100k/year as a software developer, what if I just worked an extra 7h/week?". just working an extra 7h/week isn't an option (usually). the "labor cost over the ten years they built it" is zero, in the same way the labor cost to become a bogey golfer is zero, and the labor cost to run a 20 minute 5k is zero. it's not a labor cost to participate in your hobbies. the tl;dr of all of this is the extremely common saying in the homebuilt world: if you want to build, build. if you want to fly, buy.

most kits nowadays are like 800-1500 hours depending on a ton of factors. you really don't need to let it take 10 years! plus, it's a hobby in and of itself.

> If you step away from the certified world, you will see that homebuilders are generally opting for more expensive builds with more bells and whistles, not fewer. the problem is that it basically costs 80k minimum, no matter what. a kitfox airframe is 50k, or even just a sonex is fairly similar. you can't get too too much cheaper than that much for the airframe, now add in an engine (sonex's 15k auto conversion is super appealing price wise on this point, usually you're spending 30k on a rotax or more for a lycoming/continental). if you're pushing that close or above 6 figures, it's pretty easy to say "fuck it let's throw in a g3x touch for 5k", etc. when the avionics are so much cheaper than certified, why not? adding all that capability isn't what's really driving the price up all the much. still, you can say that for a bunch of things, and now you've got a really nice and expensive experimental

> Foreflight isn't worth a subscription fee when so many good free options exist.  Lol. 120/yr might as well be free lol. moreover, if those free options aren’t doing this for you, maybe they’re not so good? plus this is a tiny fraction of what ff does but i’m not an ff salesman  > What are you talking about?  This is what AI is for.  It's a way to remove tedious, repetitive, mechanical tasks from my queue so I can do other stuff.  Like...that's exactly what AI is for. because AI is not repeatable. it has variance in its answers - it’s supposed to, and it’s what makes it good. you don’t want variance.  sure, in this case, it probably isn’t much and probably won’t matter. probably. but there’s no advantage to shoving this data through an LLM over having an LLM write traditional code to shove this data through. you’re missing out on reliability and fundamentally don’t understand these tools

bit of a silly comment. "overweight"/"obese" are defined by BMI, which is agnostic to how much of that body mass is fat mass/fat free mass. regardless of if this dude was peak Ronnie Coleman, dick skin lean and stepping on stage with less fat than your chihuahua, he'd still fall into the "obese" category.

with all due respect, no. elite level natural bodybuilders that are just over 6' will walk around only barely above 200 pounds, and these are people whos lives revolve around accumulating as much muscle as the human body can possible put on. if this guy isn't in a gym 20 hours a week, he's got plenty to lose. doesn't make it easy, at all. if anything, makes it harder, really. no need to make up excuses, though. they're in the same bucket as 1/3 of Americans, and 2/3 of us are overweight. c'est la vie, man. 21st century life is too easy

> Realistically he's only going to be able to lose a few pounds because he's actually pretty muscular. unless he's on steroids (and quite a bit of them) he's still got at minimum 80 pounds to lose, and likely much more unless the dude's absolutely fucking stacked tell them to lose 100 pounds each and you'll give them 20k cash, you'll still come out ahead and everyone wins lol. even a 172 isn't gonna fit two people that size, realistically. wait a minute you're looking at 30k or less planes? yeah, no way. not a chance in hell, double or triple that probably unfortunately!

don’t 100% follow exactly what you’re doing, but you should use AI to write code for you, and use that (if you aren’t doing this already). it’ll be a lot more reliable and predictable than running a bunch of data through an LLM   I’m not a “using AI to code” hater but you definitely want to be using these tools for their strengths and not for stuff like this. plus, I don’t really see the point when this is stuff you can just do in foreflight lol

they have some benefits over planes, like takeoff/landing distances, stall characteristics, and slow speed handling. they don’t have anywhere NEAR the aero mechanical complexity of a helicopter, either, because there’s generally no collective or swashplate, which makes it FAR simpler. it’s just a tilting rotor (again, generally - gyros with swashplates and/or collectives exist but aren’t typical).

> (If we had decided to not proceed, my mechanic would just have not made the logbook entries for the annual.) hm. seems a bit of a weird way to handle it, no? obviously you don’t want to give the owner a free annual, but that’s a lot of labor up in smoke for nothing.  I guess it also depends how the mechanic feels about it but I feel like some split would be favorable if it doesn’t work out. owner gets a cheaper annual, you get some of your wasted costs covered.

The great leaseback debate (and a project I'm working on to solve the trust issue)

Posted by Legitimate_Dust_5456@reddit | flying | View on Reddit | 22 comments

KITTYONFYRE@reddit

not necessarily. not wanting the financial liability of a plane, perhaps OP has a hangar, perhaps the school doesn’t need an entire 2nd plane that would mostly lay fallow, etc. or perhaps the owners just think it’s a good idea when it turns out to not be ideal. plenty of reasons a flight school may not want to take on an entire other plane.  now, this doesn’t mean a leaseback is a good or bad idea, I’m just pushing back on that particularly argument against it

PPL knowledge really isn't > all I know is ground school is hard and am probably going to have to watch every single lecture again. yeah I don't know what ground school studying you're using but rewatching and going over material is 100% expected! it's not like you should hear a piece of information and instantly understand it and all of the consequences of that information. sounds like you've just got too high expectations for how quickly you'll understand and digest this info, more than it being hard. especially if you're just starting (like 10 or 20 hours of studying) it feels like you're always at the tip of the iceberg learning that actually there's 100 more icebergs! but you get a handle on things quicker than you think you will, don't stress about it

it’s pretty easy lol. yes, it’s super confusing and there’s a boatload of info to learn… but it’s easier than a lot of college courses.  don’t expect to understand it all immediately on the first time you’re told something. it’s a complex topic. that doesn’t make it difficult to get your PPL. it was like 70 hours of studying between the written and checkride, that’s really not a particularly large investment.  ever try to become a scratch golfer, or get a degree, or bench 315, or run a sub 20 minute 5k, or etc etc? things that require thousands of hours of work? the only hard part of PPL is paying for it!

seems worse to me, actually. that 1 or 2 weeks a year someone takes a long trip by GA, the club's shut down for a week. instead making it 3 planes for 65 people for a week seems much better!

if safety is a concern, spend the 15-20k to get your wife (or a kid!) rated. a second set of eyes adds a ton of safety, not to mention in the extremely rare case of you popping off halfway into a flight! this is probably the biggest additional safety factor you can get for 20k, tbh. a chute is a close 2nd but would cost way more. really, they don't necessarily need to actually get rated, but if they at least have gotten to solo level, understand the basics of the radio, the aircraft, and confining the crash to the airport environment, they're likely to add a ton of safety!
